BRONZE FOR TYSON

Tyson Wins Bronze from front page Mount Morgan teenager, Tyson Ireland recently proved that he has what it takes when it comes to the sport of Muay Thai. Tyson fought his way to a bronze medal at the Muay Thai World Championships held in Antayla, Turkey between 24 September and 8 October.

LORIKEETS PRESENTATION NIGHT

There were over 600 competitors across age groups ranging from 10 to 16 years from around the world. Tyson was one of 10 Australians selected to participate in the World Championships after qualifying at the National Championships earlier this year. Tyson started Muay Thai six years ago and has been competing for the past three years, during which time he has won seven fights, lost three and drew two. His bronze medal came as a result of winning two of his three fights in Turkey, missing out on the gold which went to Cyprus and silver which was won by Russia.

Above: Kodie-Rae Dodd presents Wayne Alden with the Best Club Person Trophy.

He was accompanied to Turkey by his father Wayne, mother Sandy and coach Chloe McLachlan. While in Turkey, Tyson celebrated his 16th birthday as well as doing a little sightseeing in Istanbul. Tyson enjoyed the experience of visiting another country and learning a little about their culture. Tyson has one more year in which he can compete at the World Championships before he has to make the decision to move up to the adult level competition. He wants to bring home the gold if he is selected for the next World Championships. As to whether he will move up to adult level competition, this will depend on the decisions around school and work life in the future. “I was really lucky to go and would like to thank everyone in Mount Morgan for supporting me,” Tyson said.

Mount Morgan Lorikeets held their presentation night at the Grand Hotel on Saturday, 12 October, 2019. President Wayne Alden said he was proud of the way in which the Lorikeets played when they were moved up to A-grade and although he would have liked them to be Premiers, his pride in how the team played and their attitude on and off the field was just as rewarding. Winners of the trophies were: Wayne Alden (Club Trophy) Beau Munday (Most Improved Forward), Tyler Toby (Most Improved Back)Connor Stewart (Best Back and Highest Points Scorer) and Wade McEffer (Best Forward, Players’ Player and Best and Fairest). MOUNT UKES STRIKE A NEW CHORD Mount Morgan’s hills will be alive with the sound of ukuleles, following the formation of Mount Ukes by new resident, Liz Siefken (pictured above).

Liz arrived in Mount Morgan a month ago, after spending the previous 12 months in Rockhampton. One of the motivating factors for her move to the community was so she could be close to her daughter, granddaughter and husband as well as to start market gardening. They have already planted fruit trees and are now working on planting vegetables. When she is not in the garden, babysitting her granddaughter, Liz is busy with organizing Mount Ukes. The group started about a fortnight ago and has already 15 members strumming and plucking ukulele strings. Practices are held every Tuesday night at the CWA Hall. “The ukulele is an easy instrument to play and it’s a massive fraternity in Australia,” Liz said. “It’s a huge instrument in Australia – just about any weekend you can go to a festival somewhere if you chose to,” she said. Liz fell in love with the ukulele six years ago, formed Page 4

Maryborough, 160 members one of the biggest clubs in Queensland Liz is a classical pianist who has had classical musical training for most of her life. When Liz started playing the ukulele her and some friends would travel to Hervey Bay of a night-time “It was not a pleasant drive of a night, so some friends and my husband pushed me into forming the Maryborough club, which grew to 160 members and is one of the biggest clubs in Queensland.” Liz has taught piano and organ on and off over the years. She admits to playing the guitar badly, but has taken to the ukulele and teaching the ukulele has become her passion. Liz would also like to teach children and is thinking of holding early evening lessons to facilitate these classes. Liz has a long association with Mount Morgan as her grandfather was born in Mount Morgan and her cousin was former mine employee Ossie Wilson. Her daughter Jo currently works at the mine also. If you would like to join the Mount Ukes, you can contact Liz on 0490 011 598.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review COBRA KAI “If you remember the Sixties, you weren’t really there.” Recall the Seventies and Viet Nam, demonstrations, riots, social upheaval come to mind. However, think of the Eighties and...”Great Scot!” says Doc, as he joins Marty in the De Lorien. “We have to go back - back to the future!” So many truly great movies were made in the eighties. Movies that live on today. You only need mention a line...”That’s not a knife.” “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” “Say hello to my little friend.” “I feel the need, the need for speed.” “Who you gonna call?” “We’re on a mission from God.” “Hasta la vista, baby.” And so many more too numerous to mention, except for this one “Wax on, Wax off.” In THE KARATE KID we left Daniel La Russo (Ralph Macchio) and Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita) at the end of the epic tournament battle in 1984 where, despite disabling injury Daniel prevailed over Cobra Kai’s vicious, unprincipled star

fighter Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) with a stunning (if a bit posey) move to win the overall Karate Championship for that year. Now, in COBRA KAI the highly anticipated return of the two iconic characters, arch-rivals from the legendary KARATE KID reunite, 35 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Today Daniel leads a prosperous, enviable life in the affluent hills of Encino while his high school adversary Johnny has not done so well. Johnny has actually grown up to be a fairly decent guy but his road hasn’t been easy and luck has rarely favoured him. He’s a simple kind of guy who still believes in the mantra of his old dojo - “Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.”, and he is completely clueless and totally innocent of the politically correct world in which we live today. He has no idea of what “can’t be said” anymore. He just hasn’t been paying attention these past decades.

Mount Morgan Visitor Information Centre

Johnny seeks to bring meaning and redemption back into his life by re-opening the infamous COBRA KAI karate dojo. Of course when Daniel learns that COBRA KAI is back he is horrified. What he remembers of that school can never be allowed to fester in his neighbourhood again. One of the most amazing things about COBRA KAI is that they’ve managed to reassemble most of THE KARATE KID’s original cast. The dialogue is priceless and hilarious, especially from the nonpc Johnny. Incredibly well written, great action, terrific storylines and unexpected comedy, COBRA KAI is rated M (PG13 is fine in our opinion) and runs for four and a half hours. COBRA KAI - loved it!

Pride in Your Town In the last edition of the Argus we wrote of advancements in communications and how we have lost some of the pleasantries of yester year, including receiving a lovely handwritten letter, with correct spelling and delivered by the postman on horseback. Now we are giving thought to the use of our colourful Australian language and how we have lost so many of our unique expressions. Of course our language is English but even newcomers to our shore have difficulty with it, so how would they cope with true Aussie slang. Putting our thinking caps on we have remembered some of our used slang of years past and possibly nowadays modern Australian kids would wonder what some sayings mean. Sad. Can you imagine a young “bloke” leaving a great film and exclaiming “It was a rip snorter of a show” and the leading “fellah” was a

“smasher of a looker”. Of course he had taken his “Sheila” to the movies and she thought it was “bonza”. They came away “happy as Larry’ after the ‘flicks”. It was sad to hear of old “blue”, “kicking the bucket” as he was a great old “codger”. He sure had a fair bit of “spondoola” stacked away because he often said “you’re a long time looking at the lid”, “so spend your marbles” while you can, “as there’s no pocket in a shroud”. He would have “cracked 90” soon. “Stone the crows and starve the lizards” how our time has “gone like the wind”. “Holy smoke” it is nearly time for us to “shoot through” or the “coppers” will be on our tail and “we will have to face the music”. So ladies and gentlemen - NOT that horrible Yankee word of “Guys” that has no gender association, we will now “shoot through like a bondi tram” and wish you all, a “true blue ripper” of a weekend.

Keep your “peckers” up and have a “beaut” time. It is “smoko time now for us, so we will “skedaddle.” and wish all of you a “bloody good day”. Don’t “run amuck in the street”, do everything so it will be just “honkey dory”. “C ya round.” Where has all of our Aussie slang disappeared to? While it certainly is not the best way to get your message over it did have a “true blue” meaning to it, and nothing could be more Aussie. Perhaps the film “Crocodile Dundee” restored a bit of it in the movie and we know the Americans were fascinated. I know from by gone days the British were mesmerized by it but never could figure out what the phrases meant. Can our modern generation relate to any of it either? As my friend would say “if it wasn’t for the bad luck I’d have no luck at all”. Hooroo. Think Clean – Be Tidy.

Time to nominate for Australia Day Awards “We all know someone who absolutely goes above and beyond,” said Mayor Strelow. “Whether they’ve volunteered countless evenings and weekends at a local sports club or organisation, dedicated their career to improving the lives of those around them, or launched an initiative that helps make our region a better place. “The Australia Day Awards are our opportunity to highlight the work these generous people do, and show them how much they mean to our community. “This year, for example, Emeritus Professor Errol Payne received the Citizen of the Year Award. He is one of the people who established 23 October - 6 November 2019

what is now CQ University, and was acknowledged for his commitment to education in the community. “The Young Citizen of the Year Award went to Blake Moore for his contributions to the Rockhampton Touch Football Association, not only as a highly successful competitor, but also an inspirational coach and referee. “If you know of a person or community group dedicated to making the Rockhampton Region a better place, help us recognise their efforts and nominate them for a Rockhampton Region Australia Day Award.” To complete a nomination form head to www.rockhamptonregion. qld.gov.au/CommunityEvents/ MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

POLICE NEWS

Thank you to everyone who assisted with our fires last Monday. The Queensland Fire Service and Rural Fire Brigade did an excellent job and thankfully no one was injured. This is another timely reminder to ensure you and your property are fire prepared. If you see anything suspicious whether it be a person or a vehicle then please report it to Policelink 131 444 or contact our Police Station on 4932 3939. I would like to remind everyone about an issue I am passionate about and that is crime prevention. This can be something as simple as locking your car and house or putting a lock on a gate or even installing a camera. So long as opportunity exists there will always be somebody there to take advantage. If you own a business around town then I strongly suggest you invest in a CCTV system. They are quite cheap these days and are an excellent deterrent. The chances of Police identifying offenders is also greatly increased with video footage. School is also back so ensure you are being mindful of school speed zones in the morning and afternoon. Stay safe and as always if you need to speak with Police please call us or attend our station at 30 Hall Street, Mount Morgan. Front counter opening hours are generally 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Thursday. Regards Sergeant Matt HARLING, Officer in Charge (PSO) Page 8

‘Pawesome’ chip and vac vouchers for getting on board.” PFAP Founder and veterinarian Dr Mark Kelman said he believes this program will go a long way in keeping dogs in the Rockhampton Region healthy. “We’re offering these vouchers for the first time in Australia right here in Rocky, where we aim to vaccinate as many puppies as possible to lessen the Parvo outbreaks we see each year from October to February,” said Dr Kelman. “In a nation of dog-lovers, so many of us haven’t even heard of Parvo or know just how widespread it is. Parvo strikes 20,000 puppies and dogs every year in Australia – 90 per cent of which are puppies and half of which die. “We’re all working together under our new Combating Parvovirus Program to make sure those who are doing it tough can still get their puppies and dogs the protection they need from this disease.

An innovative voucher program for dog microchipping and vaccinations has launched this week thanks to a partnership between Rockhampton Regional Council, Queensland-headquartered national charity Paws For A Purpose (PFAP), and two local vets. The program will offer eligible residents of the Rockhampton Region $15 vaccinations and $10 microchipping for their dogs at participating vets. Councillor Ellen Smith, Chair of Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee, said that these vouchers will make a big difference to a number of people in our community. “These vaccinations normally cost up to and over $100 each, and dogs require three vaccinations in their first 16 weeks, and a booster every year after that,” said Cr Smith.

“We couldn’t have done this without these amazing veterinary practices, a generous Rockhampton Regional Council subsidy and of course it’s all possible due to the donations we receive and the sale of our very own Paws for A Purpose Premium Beef Treats.” To apply for the chip and vac vouchers come into any of Council’s Customer Service Centres, or submit a Vaccination and Microchip Voucher Application Form available here: https://www.rockhamptonregion.qld. gov.au/AboutCouncil/Customer-Forms#Animals. If you have any questions, contact Customer Service on 07 4932 9000 or by emailing enquiries@rrc.qld. gov.au. To find out more about Paws For a Purpose head over to www.pawsforapurpose.org Program facts: •

The chip and vac voucher program is available to Rockhampton Region residents with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Pension Concession Card, Health Care Card, or on a Newstart allowance.

The program will run until 31 March 2020 or until vouchers are sold out (Vouchers expire 31 April 2020).

Microchipping is mandatory for the vaccination program.

Clients with puppies and dogs in need of multiple vaccinations can be issued with multiple vouchers at one time.

“Microchipping is an additional expense again, so the costs can add up very quickly. “If money is tight, or an expense comes up that people haven’t planned for, vaccinations and microchipping can become a lower priority, and can even slip people’s minds altogether. “We know, however, that vaccinating is essential for the wellbeing of all dogs in our community, and these vouchers will go a long way in removing a major barrier. “I really want to thank PFAP for coming to us with this great solution, and local vet clinics Alma Street Veterinary Hospital and Torenbeek Veterinary Clinic 23 October - 6 November 2019

TRACING FAMILY HISTORIES

Following the inclusion of historical family photographs, in the last edition of the Mount Morgan Argus, by the Mount Morgan Historical Museum, the identity of the families still remain a mystery.

These pictures were donated to the Museum many years ago and as yet they are still unidentified. If you have any knowledge as to the identity of these families, we would welcome the information.

If you would like to call in to the Museum, it is open daily between 10 am and 4 pm or phone 4938 2122 during those hours.

GUESS THE MOUNT MORGAN IDENTITY Congratulations to Melvine Ingram who guessed that the Mount Morgan identity was Merle Curtis (nee Watts). You have won a $10 voucher from IGA. This little girl was born in Mount Morgan and is a well known Mount Morgan identity. She was one of five children. If you have a baby photo of someone who has contributed to the Mount Morgan community, send it to mmpad@bigpond.com. If you do not have access to a scanner, we can scan the image for you. Page 14

FESTIVAL NEWS The Golden Mount Festival Association AGM is set for 4 pm, Saturday, 26 October at The Leichhardt Hotel dining room, followed by a General Meeting. All executive positions will be declared open, with nominations taken from those in attendance. If you have a passion for the continuation of this historic and long running festival, PLEASE make a point of attending and getting involved! All are welcome.

We are in desperate need of assistance at this point in time, and though we have announced a theme, if membership does not improve, we will have to make the decision at the commencement of 2020, as to whether we are able to continue with such stretched resources. Our options at that point will be to fold or invite Rockhampton Regional Council to take over if interested. This is our town’s Festival….let’s not lose it! Kirra Swain - Secretary

It is that time of year again where preparations for the next Golden Mount Festival are soon to begin. Our theme for the event is “2020 Vision- Hindsight/ Foresight” This is a nod to our past, recognition of our present and a look to our future. It certainly opens up a broad range of possibilities when it comes to decorating floats entered in the Grand Parade, and this time we would like to see more Morgan Street shopfront windows getting in on the action too! We hope the Mount Morgan community will once again, support this wonderful traditional event, and if anyone is able to assist in any way, be it with muscles, time, logistics, prizes or sponsorship, or to join up as a member, please contact us at goldenmountfestival@ gmail.com, or phone 0411 865 621.
