Have you ever danced in the Masonic Hall, attended a wedding reception or even won some prizes at a Cent Sale? Most locals would have enjoyed one of these pastimes but like most of us have no idea of the history of the Hall itself. Thankfully, from the inspiration and information of two current Masonic members we can now add a little knowledge for you of the Hall’s history. The Masonic Lodge began very early in Mount Morgan in late 1889 and meetings were originally conducted in the “studio “ of photographer, Jens Hansen Lundager. Lundager as we all know was the photographer for the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company and his postcards and pictures were of the highest standard. He was a master of his era. However, the studio was not satisfactory and so the Masons decided to purchase the building and do renovations. Before any work was started Lundager re purchased the hall. The next meeting place was the Oddfellow’s Hall where they paid rent and donated forty pounds to the Oddfellow’s for renovations. This was still not satisfactory as the Hall was near the public street, (possibly East Street in those years). It was Lundager in 1892 who initially started the ball rolling that ground be purchased and their own building constructed. It was not until 1896 that the land of No 6 Meyenberg Street was purchased. In August of 1899 it was moved that a suitable building be constructed at a cost of four hundred pounds. This did not happen but later land was purchased in Gordon Street and the Masonic Temple started to become a reality. The Hall was to be built at a cost of One thousand pounds. The temple was commenced and completed in 1903. An announcement in the “Morning Bulletin” at that time reads “The building is a handsome structure of brick, two stories high with a composite front.”

The lower portion of the Hall maybe used as a dining room and made available for dancing and other functions. The cost was one thousand and five hundred pounds and was erected by Newman Bros. of Rockhampton under the supervision of T.G. Cornes, from the plan of Messrs Eaton and Bates who were successful architects when competitive designs were called”. The Temple was lit by gas until electricity came to the township in 1935. Of course T.G. Cornes had many connections with early Mount Morgan Buildings and the bricks used in the building were made locally by Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. Naturally additions and improvements have been made over the years and today it stands majestically and without a doubt is a fine example of the town’s early history and achievements and the foresight of great men. Get ready to enjoy the MMPAD Cent Sale and then the Festival of Christmas Trees. As always, think Clean - be tidy, and use the bins to keep our town beautiful.

Local talent takes the stage

By Tahlia Dale Mount Morgan State High School presented the school production last weekend and what a success it was. The production of Holka Polka had the audience entertained and spellbound. The puns and theatrics delivered by the actors made it an enchanting performance.

A cracking good show: Senior student, Matthew had the crowd laughing as “Humphrey Dumpty”.

The first night was a good performance however due to some sound issues it was somewhat difficult to hear. Even with these sound issues the performers were still able to deliver an entertaining show. When the second night came round all technical issues had been ironed out and the performance had a magical quality to it. The students involved in this performance, both on stage and back stage, did a wonderful job. They are all splendid students who made every effort to make this process as easy and pleasant as they possibly could. The performers seemed as though they had a lot of fun and I certainly had fun putting this together. On behalf of the school I would like to say thank you to a few key people that allowed the smooth running of this production. Thank you to the teachers on the door and the people behind the bar, you all did a wonderful job. Thank you to the many people that stayed behind after Saturday’s show to help pack up, it made life a lot easier. Thank you to those who donated their cars to move the important stage, lighting and audio equipment. And lastly a big thank you to the assistant director, Lola Stock, this production would not have happened if Lola was not there every step of the way assisting in every way possible. Thank you to everyone who came, I hope you all had a lovely time and we look forward to another successful performance in two years!

We nose talent when we see it: Teagan and Shelby in costume

Hats off to the 2015 Graduates It’s been twelve years in the making and this Friday 19 students of Mount Morgan State High School will complete their school education. The senior students will wrap up their final day with a special assembly in the morning, which will come complete with the traditional words from faculty and the ringing of the school bell around the grounds. It will then be an early finish for the students, who will head home in preparation of the 2015 Senior Formal. Mount Morgan State High School would like to warmly welcome all interested community members to attend the official arrival of the senior class. This will take place in front of the School of Arts Hall, at 7pm.

Congratulations to the 2015 graduates: Kain Campion; Angel Coulson-Cooper; Cole Court-Barnham; Lachlan Cox; Zinzan Delaney; Shinnoah Fay; William Holden; Montana Hooper; Tyler Jones; Ian Leggo; Matthew Lodewikus; Shania Moran; Taran Pratt; Faith Rankin; Dylan Roberts; Isobella Rudolph; Raymond Stewart; Bianca Tulk; Natasha Wyvill. See next issue for formal photos of our stunning2015 local graduates!

A Show of appreciation By Heather Quarry On Monday the 26th of October, 2015 Brian Glover, President of the Mount Morgan Show Society presented a cheque of $500 to the Mount Morgan State High School at their school assembly. Students from the High School were presented with certificates for their tireless efforts helping out at the show. From assisting as stewards in the show ring with the horses, to sorting and handing out prize money, and handing out ribbons, they did a fantastic job. Brian said “the students did themselves proud and they did their school proud on the day”. The High School’s Principal, Mr Trevor Rickertt, has been impressed with student participation both inside the school boundaries and outside at community events such as the Mount Morgan Show. The student attendance percentage has also increased in recent times. “This year fifty four students are sitting on one hundred percent attendance and want to be at school,” said Mr Rickertt.

RSL News Eight members of 6th Reg. Mount Morgan Light Horse attended the ceremony of remembrance of the “Battle of Beersheba. Beersheba was an oasis, and the only water available for man or horse in any direction for more than twelve hours. The horses had already been without water for more than thirty six hours and had no chance of making over a twelve hour trip to anywhere. Beersheba was vital for survival. The light horse attack failed the first time, but, regrouped, they attacked again and were successful. The success was due to the tenacity of men and horses of the light horse regiments. A ceremony was held at Anzac Park last Saturday on October 25th, 2014.

Light refreshments served in Hall at 5pm. Bring a friend and enjoy an evening of good music to commence the Christmas Season.

Award Ceremony Success

By Claudia Brooks On Wednesday 4th November Mount Morgan State High School held its annual awards ceremony. 2015 has been a highly successful year for both staff and students at Mount Morgan High and they have been well rewarded for their achievements. Over 100 merit and academic awards were earned over the year and were presented that evening. I would love to congratulate all those people on their amazing accomplishments and I wish you the best of luck in your studies next year. But that isn’t all of the awards; the Mount Morgan High students had also earned an amazing 60 special awards that were also handed out that evening. These awards ranged from writing to sports and so much more. The night had started with our glorious national anthem. The room was packed with thrilled, proud parents, the honoured special guests that were presenting these awards and, of course, the amazing students that had proven themselves worthy. It was heart-warming and inspiring to see so many people attend the awards ceremony and encourage the students to do their best at their studies. Some of the more important special awards of the evening include The Ray Hunt Memorial Award, the 2015 Quiet Achiever award and the top student awards. The 2015 Ray Hunt Memorial Awards are presented to the top year 7 and 9 student in reading and numeracy as well as to a student who has performed very highly across not only reading and numeracy, but also grammar and punctuation and spelling as is deserving of encouragement. Ray Hunt was born in Sydney and experienced a very difficult upbringing. Despite these deprived beginnings, or because of them, he grew up to be a loving, family man, well respected in all the communities in which he lived. He thought it was important to put back as a volunteer. He worked enthusiastically, for both the Rural Fire Brigade and Junior Golf. A prize such as this is a good beginning, not an end. The excellence in national testing literacy awards were presented to Shelby Pridemore & Stephanie Wyvill. The excellence in national testing numeracy awards were presented to Nicholas Van Druemel & Stephanie Wyvill and the excellence in national testing encouragement award was presented to Alexis Kajewski.

The Scott Family Quiet Achiever Award is presented to a student who shows great dedication to their work but does not seek recognition for their efforts. Mount Morgan High believed that the most worthy person for this award was Jacob Behnke. The top student awards are presented to the student in each of the year levels 7 – 11 who have achieved the highest across the range of subjects offered. This year’s top student awards were presented to Dylan Stewart (year 7), Mary-Rose Donald-Nord (year 8), Brooke Whalley (year 9), Claudia Brooks (year 10) and Kiera Martin (year 11). These are just some of the more important special awards, there were so many more not mentioned here. Perhaps the most important and prestigious award presented at the awards ceremony was the School Dux. This award is bestowed upon the year 12 student that is achieving highly in most of their classes, shows interest in tertiary studies and meets the graduation requirements for this year. Mount Morgan High School had decided that one person had passed the criteria and was the best recipient for this prestigious award. So it was with great pride that Mount Morgan High School presented Lachlan Cox with the School Dux. The night was a great success and everybody left in an ecstatic mood. So I would like to thank everybody for attending and making this night the very best it could be. I would also like to thank the special guests that had attended, it was an honour to have you at our ceremony. To everybody who attended, I wish you the best of luck for the years to come. Rodeo Association rounds up new logo design

By Mount Morgan Rodeo Association It has been a lovely couple of weeks with the Mount starting to green up from the lovely rain. It’s also been good for us with a number of interesting activities happening.

Barefoot Bowls at the Welfare Bowls Club: on 5th Dec starting at 2pm. Bar and BBQ, raffles and money board. Xmas Raffle of the Little House. This can be seen at the Hot Bread Shop. It will be drawn in Dec.

The entries in the School Logo Competition were collected from the schools. While we were hoping for logos from both of our local schools, we were pleased to receive outstanding entries from our young locals. Everyone from Prep to Yr 6 got involved! With so many entries, it was hard to choose an outright winner. But choose we did. Overall and upper grades winner was Tyson Ireland whose picture represented Mount Morgan and the Rodeo Assoc perfectly. Tyson’s logo will be used on our letterheads and flag. Runner up and lower grades winner was Chloe Kane. Both children received a trophy and a voucher for Heilbronn’s in Rockhampton on Tues while on parade. All of the entries will be placed on small flags and used at rodeo events.

Ham wheels at IGA on 5th, 12th, and 19th Dec. More information in the next Argus.

Dee Bowls Club was a hive of activity on Saturday afternoon with the Barefoot Bowls event. There was some concern that the rain would stop play but this didn’t happen. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Raffles were drawn during the afternoon with some very happy winners. Thank you Dee Bowls Club for allowing us to have this event on your green. The Electric Raffle was drawn and first prize went to Ray Hall and 2nd prize to Billy Dalton. We also had a great meal and company for our Melbourne Cup dinner at the Grand.

Upcoming events are:

Golf Day at the Mt. Morgan Golf Club: on the 14th Nov starting at 2pm. 9 Hole Ambrose, Bar and BBQ. Money board and raffles.

Rotary News Monday evening, 2nd November, the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan with the Rotary Club of Rockhampton enjoyed a "Morning After" Melbourne Cup night. These two Clubs meet each year for a social evening the night before Melbourne Cup visiting Mount Morgan one year and Rockhampton the next year, a tradition for many years. Multidraw prizes were won by the local club members and the visitors while Ann Dwyer won the prize for the best outfit for "The Morning After".

Thank you messages this fortnight go to Heilbronn’s for their donations of two $50 vouchers, Mount Morgan Primary School Principal, teachers, and students for the successful Logo Comp, Dee Bowls Club for the great afternoon and wonderful donation, Grand Hotel for the terrific meals, and all who donated to the raffles. Thank you. Pictured: Mount Morgan State Primary students, Chloe Kane and Tyson Ireland with their winning designs. Photo supplied.

Kindness keeps on flowing By Heather Quarry Mark Ricks, a dedicated family man from Struck Oil, is a well known member of the Mount Morgan Community. Not only because of his years as one of our friendly, helpful Ambulance Officers, but also because of his positive invention skills, ambitions, and his innovative business mind. A family business venture, Ricks Built Enterprises Pty Ltd, along side his registered FeelGood Promotions business followed closely by his latest inventive idea, Kindness Water, gives you a good idea of how versatile and kindness-motivated Mark really is. It wasn’t until Mark was in his thirties that his keen zest for inventing things and spreading the importance of kindness in every day living came to the fore. Seeking to find an inner direction to help people and encourage people to be kind to each other has not only given him great satisfaction and a feeling of self worth, it has also continuously helped him to help others. A toothbrush holder, a bed designed to help roll or turn over patients alleviating pain and/or stress for the bed ridden person and the care givers, and a sanitizer, are just three of the practical helpful inventions Mark has been the creator of over the last few years. His latest inspiration for Kindness Water came about a little over two years ago when he wanted to see more kind acts being carried out everywhere. The brand name, Kindness Water, is a commercial product sold in a select number of outlets in Mount Morgan and Rockhampton. Mark says “It is early days yet but it is popular already. The reason for the brand is simply to remind people about kindness to themselves and in general, to others. World Kindness Day on Friday the 13th of November was the start of what is hoped to be a huge annual event.” World Kindness Week which is part of the World Kindness Movement is supported so far by approximately sixteen countries. At this time Australia is the leading country for this movement.

FeelGood Promotions decided to give away a pallet of the 600 ml bottles of Kindness Water to individuals, local businesses, council and the local police, to pass water on as a positive gesture and to make people aware of the World Kindness Day. “So simple to do but can help everyone.” Mark enjoys promoting his water but his most important passion is promoting kindness. When asked what makes his water so special, he replied “It is like any other water. The message on .the label is what is really important. The Kindness symbol with people that have outstretched arms tells the story”. Mark closed the interview with a very positive statement noteworthy for all of us. “Our aim is to raise awareness. Kindness, not just within our community, but everywhere is a positive thing.”

Hi Argus readers, With the countdown on for Christmas, it’s all hands on deck here at MMPAD! It’s shaping up to be a busy couple of weeks ahead – with our team getting final preparations set for a MASSIVE Christmas cent sale at the end of the month, followed by the 2015 Christmas Tree Festival in early December! Here’s a bit of an update on how all is going with our preparations. MASSIVE Christmas Cent Sale: We are advertising a “massive” cent sale, well because it really is! With over $2,000 worth of prizes up for grabs it’s easy to see why. We would like to say a very big thank you to our two main organisers of this event, MMPAD volunteers, Melray and Margaret. A special thanks also goes to all of the businesses and individuals who have so kindly made donations. All proceeds from this event go toward hosting this year’s Christmas Tree Festival – so a huge thanks for helping us again host this free of charge for the community! The cent sale will be held next Saturday (November 28) at the School of Arts Hall. Doors will open at 12.30pm, with the cent sale officially kicking off at 2pm. See you there!! Tree Festival – we need your tree entries! Since establishing in 1992, the local festival has seen Mount Morgan usher in the festive season with its annual display of Christmas trees. Each year, the impressive exhibition is made up of handmade or hand decorated entries; submitted by residents, businesses and organisations from around the community and region. We are again calling on the local community to get creative and submit a tree entry to be included in this year’s display. Tree entries can be delivered to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall between 9am and 4pm on Thursday the 3rd of December and 8am and 2pm on Friday the 4th of December. Congratulations to the students of Mount Morgan High We recently had the privilege of attending this year’s awards night hosted by the Mount Morgan State High School. Firstly, a very big congratulations to all of the students of Mount Morgan State High School who took home awards. Each year we have the pleasure of sponsoring and presenting one of the awards – the Most Promising Junior Writers Award. Thanks again to Mount Morgan High for this opportunity and congrats to this year’s upcoming writer, Mary-Rose DonaldNord. Of course congratulations also go to the senior class of 2015! We hope you are enjoying your final week of school and we look forward to seeing you dressed in your finest this Friday.

by Trish & Greg Mathers 0400591504 Recently we have had an influx of fledglings who have landed in yards where there are dogs. They have been rescued, but unfortunately this means that they have been taken away from their parents, who by way and afar are the best qualified to raise them. If you find yourself in this situation, please place the little one on a branch outside of the yard where the danger is. It needs to be shady and high enough to be out of reach from cats etc. You will need to watch it for up to a couple of hours to see if the parents return to feed it. If they do, it should be fine. If they do not return after a couple of hours then it will need rescuing. Do not attempt to give it water or food. Birds have their airway under their tongue, and if you force water into its mouth there is a very great risk of drowning it. One such bird that came into care this week is a PaleHeaded Rosella chick. The Pale-Headed Rosella is of the parrot family. It is around 30cms long and is a very pretty bird. It has a pale yellow head with white on the cheeks, with a yellow back with the look of scales, the central portion being black. The wings are blue with some black near the shoulder region. The chest is pale blue and the rump red. The tail is blue with green towards the rump. They are seed eaters. With Xmas just around the corner, why not give a gift the whole family will enjoy, such as a bird bath. With the weather getting hotter it will really be appreciated by the local birds. We have a huge amount of birds of all different species who visit our bird bath daily. It is a joy to watch them. Another great present is a set of sonic devices for the car. These give a high pitched whistle as you are driving, warning wildlife of the approaching possible danger and giving them time to move away from the road. These devices really do work, and can be purchased for as little as $4. In the event that you find a sick, injured or orphaned animal, please keep it as quiet and warm as possible. Birds especially need to be kept warm as their body temperature is 42deg! Handle it as little as possible. A pillow case is ideal for a young mammal, and a cardboard box with an old towel is perfect for a bird (just make sure it has airholes though). If you are able, take it to the nearest vet, who will assess it and phone a carer. Vets do not charge for dropping a native animal off to them.

Queensland Ambulance Service Mount Morgan Station News

Additional service! Hair & waxing now available every Thursday. Introducing Tracey Finch.

We would like to bring to your attention the importance of having your Residence/Workplace clearly identifiable so that there is NO delay in our Paramedics arriving and providing care to you. At times, our Officers are finding it difficult to locate a property when we are called there for an Emergency. Sometimes we are relying on rubbish bins because there has been no other form of visible identification. Relying on numbering on rubbish bins is not reliable as they can easily be moved between residences. If you have your house number on the front door, remember that if you have the door open waiting for us we cannot see the number – so in this instance you may need to have it located in another place as well. The majority of houses have letter boxes at the front of the house. Our suggestion would be that this is an ideal position to place the number so it is easily seen. Remember that we may not be responding to you in the daytime when visibility is good. It may be during the night or inclement weather when we are called, and this just makes our job a little more challenging when trying to locate numbers. Please ensure that you have your Residence/Workplace Number clearly visible. Make sure that it is not covered by foliage or hidden behind bins/cars etc. New numbers can easily be purchased at a reasonable price, some are adhesive, making them quick and easy to attach. If you are not able to purchase new numbering – become handy with paint brush or even a large marking pen and write them. There is no specific requirement – as long as it is easily seen, easily read and is the correct number. Whether you own your house or are renting, it is a responsible decision to have it clearly numbered. Sometimes you don’t realise the importance of something so mundane, until you need to use it yourself. So if you’re sitting there reading this article, take the next couple of minutes to pop out and check on your house number, make sure it is easily seen from the roadside, it is legible, has the correct numbering, and is not hidden by anything. In anticipation – we thank you for making our job a little easier. Stay safe.

Summer

A poem by Heather Quarry The Mount feels the heat on the ground, in the air. Summer is surrounding us everywhere. Newman Oval, the car park at IGA, at the dam or pool it is hotter each day. Remember to keep covered when you go out. Stay hydrated. You need fluids, there is no doubt. Use sunscreen. Wear long sleeves for protection. Keep a hat on your head to help save your complexion. If you are out in the car remember your child or a pet can die very quickly, if to open a window you do forget. Use common sense wherever you go, whatever you do. To enjoy the pleasures of summer it is all up to you.

Nature’s Two Sides

A poem by Frank Clark

No exercise when one sits on a seat Rise early if you want to miss the sun's heat By nine the sun's rays warm the ground Close the mount to conserve energy and clean up all around Not a cloud in sight On the ground nothing to delight Leaves blowing here and there The scene a look of despair Gum trees shed their bark, so dry Under the canopy chunks of bark lie The grass displays no colour of green A colour like dry straw is seen No water to evaporate to cool the air The only thing to restore is water from up there Soon have to make for pets a water bag Because to the nearest water is a long drag No lawn to mow the grass will not grow If rain comes the grass will start to grow Pushing a mower I don't want to know Lack of exercise footsteps slow These lines are scribed dry you can tell A comparison, abundant rain results will sell When the rain comes and rejuvenates This rhyme will be out of date

We at MMPAD will deeply miss Mick and his joyous and positive outlook on life. His passion for Mount Morgan and all of its potential was nothing short of inspiring and infectious. We will greatly miss the genuine support he gave to both our community projects and the Argus production. Our workdays were regularly made brighter by his phone calls, his witty jokes, his project ideas and of course his recipes – which he devotedly provided for the Argus each and every fortnight, at times even specially delivered with samples for our office to taste test. Rest in Peace Mick, we will miss you.
