2.. Although rain clouds threatened on (Easter Monday), the 2nd April 2018, over 60 youngsters hopped down to the Mount Morgan Railway Museum and Visitor Information Centre, keen to hunt for Eggs. Well... pegs actually!
MMPAD EASTER EGG HUNT
Due to the risk of the prize eggs being devoured by birds or ants prior to the hunt, it was decided to hide wooden clothes pegs which the children could then exchange for lollies or chocolate eggs. This proved to be an excellent idea with a constant stream of exchanges happening throughout the morning.
The colouring in competition, for children up to grade six, was very successful. Entries were on display in the Mount Morgan Bakery window initially, then in the Railway foyer for all to see on the day of the hunt.
The hunt area was divided into two sections, with prep in one area of the garden and the larger, more Many of the children and parents were complicated area was allocated for in attendance for the announcement the children in years one to six to of the winning entries. forrage for their prizes. Terri from the Bakery was on hand also with ten prizes she had donated for the winners of the peoples choice awards. Thank you to Terri and to all those who voted for their favourite entry.
There was a golden peg in each section, with a special prize for the lucky child that found that peg. The fun continued with activities on offer including easter basket making, collage and puzzles. Pin the tail on the bunny proved popular.

News from the Dee River Oldies
Mount Morgan High School News Ten of our Year 10 boys joined Raelene Robinson (Guidance Officer) and Maipele Morseu (Youth Support Worker) to complete a two day Peer Skill workshop. They discussed and learnt many concepts from values, strengths, issues, and problems peers experience and most importantly they learnt a technique called POOCH (Problem, Option,Outcome, Choice and How did it go). They all received a certificate which will be great to add to their resumes. (pictured below)
We had 18 members enjoy our first bus trip on Monday 19th February 2018 to The Pilbeam Theatre for the ‘Nearly Neil’ concert, and then home for lunch at The Grand hotel. On Tuesday the 13th March a group of volunteers from the Yeppoon Visitor Information Centre (pictured above) travelled to Mount Morgan to familiarise themselves with all that our great town has to offer visitors. They left well equipped with information to answer any queries they might receive.
The Visitor Information Centre has achieved accreditation which will boost Mount Morgan’s profile as a destination in Tourism publications and websites all over Australia. Currently we are working with council for planning and production of regional and town maps, signage upgrades and other inniatives to promote and benefit the town. The MMPAD website is about to receive a new look, however will still retain current events, business, attractions and essential information to promote Mount Morgan locally and internationally. We are mindful of being part of the Rockhampton Region and continue to work closely with local, state government and regional organisations towards Mount Morgans’ development, success and sustainability in the region.

Pride in Your Town
Vacuum Oil Company Animal Trap
What a blow to our town with Carbine failing to continue operations at the old mine site for the treatment of the tailings to produce gold, copper and pyrites. It would have been a huge benefit to our town with some employment gained and possibly helping the business community. It is the responsibility of every citizen to work hard in the promotion of our town so we do not become a ghost town like so many small communities have in the Western areas of Queensland. By Graeme Meade I was visiting a friend and I spotted this at the back of his shed. This type of thing really excites me, these days we might call it recycling, but 100 years ago someone made this trap, probably to put food on the table. With these few items mentioned above now we all need to sell My friend will not sell it, but he has let me enjoyable life style to relatives, their friends, people we meet on borrow it for a few weeks. holidays and in every manner we can. We must not let our town decline as we have such a magnificent history it must not be lost. Can Vacuum Oil Company (VOC) was the first oil company to set up in Australia, in 1895. In the we count on you? beginning selling only oil products but as more Now a little nostalgia from past years that may bring happy memories motor vehicles were being sold in Australia to many older folk as it certainly was a tradition. It was the SUNDAY the company grew. VOC introduced the DINNER, more of a ritual than a meal, and it was the heart and soul “Plume” and “Laurel” brands in 1916. Over the years the company merged and bought of family life. other business to become Mobil in the 1940s. The Mount has much to offer; both primary and secondary schools, affordable housing and a modern hospital, many community and sporting facilities to cater for all tastes, room for families and retirees wanting to have their own vegetable patch or perhaps some chickens, and only 40 minutes from an airport.
Sitting down to that leg of mutton on Sunday was the acknowledgement that Mum, Dad and the kids were as one. There was no substitute. Even the term “Sunday dinner” was sacrosanct, it was never called lunch. It was always held in the dining room with a tablecloth on the table and it was like a family flag showing. Dad was always at the head of the table, showing his authority and Mum was more practical by sitting near the kitchen door. Possibly the most untouchable item on the table was Dad’s carving knife. Sometimes the knife was sharpened on steel before use but when the meal was finished and the knife washed up it would be returned to its polished case.
The VOC wooden boxes were made in the thousands, probably tens of thousands, so they are not that hard to find. But they are very collectable, the price varies depending on whether the box is complete and how bright the colours are.
It is always debatable whether a box made into a trap is more valuable or less. I think it adds to the value, it’s a one of a kind; someone Come Sunday dinner there was no dallying around and being late as probably made this to feed their family. This you had to be there right on time. Most of the treasures were brought box is about 55 cm long, 40 cm tall and 26 cm out for the dinner. The best plates from the sideboard, the cutlery wide. was shining, the glasses gleaming and even a vase of flowers was on the starch stiff tablecloth. After the hot roast meal and the mutton I have no idea where or who made the box (what became of mutton, never hear of it these times) there were into a trap. It could have been made in the more delights called pudding, (sweets of today). Sunday dinner was workshop at the mine or in someone’s back a best behaviour occasion, no throwing things, or rolling peas along yard. Some of the metal parts of the trap look the table as no one wanted to be banished from the table and miss professionally made but some of the welds on the metal frame are not done by a tradesman. out on the pudding. To work the trap, bait is attached to a hook In these times the difference is unbelievable, grab a snack from the inside the box; the hook is connected to a fridge, perhaps watch sport on TV, or just sit on the patio with a steel rod on top of the box. stubby in your hand chatting about yesterday’s game. Certainly there is no need to get the carving knife and steel from the polished case. How life changes! Better or worse? Don’t forget the Anzac celebrations on the 25th April. Think clean and be tidy.
Another steel rod comes from the door of the trap and connects to the other rod. The animal comes in and takes the bait; this moves the rods and makes the door close. Dinner!!!

Gentlefolk to Visit Mount Morgan
by Graeme Meade This Saturday afternoon and on Sunday you may notice groups of cyclists riding around Mount Morgan. This is because a facebook bicycle group is going to do a ride around Mount Morgan on Saturday afternoon. The “Gentlefolk Single-Speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society” started in Rockhampton in December 2015 as a small group of people getting together to ride their older style bikes and socialise together. What started as a ride to a picnic spot has morphed into ‘laneway rides’, ‘because we can’ rides and ‘historical rides’.
Some of the “Gentlefolk” have spent a lot of dollars and time on their bike, while others may be on the bike they ride every day, or the latest find from the tip shop. A recent ride saw over 80 riders on a “Discover Emu Park” historical ride, which started at Bell Park. We had afternoon tea at “The Haven” and rode around other historical sites in the area. There is a real connection between Mount Morgan and Emu Park, with the mine picnics being held there. Some of the infrastructure that is still in Bell Park was put there by the Mount Morgan Mine. The next ride is on Saturday 14th April. Leaving at 3 pm, from under the gas lamp in East Street, that’s between the Leichhardt Hotel and Collectables and Memories. The ride will take about 2 or 3 hours to complete, with stops at historical sites along the way. We will be expecting about 40 riders to take part. After the ride we are having drinks and dinner at the Leichhardt Hotel. We have invited people from other facebook groups based from Hervey Bay to Townsville, so we will be seeing some new faces and bikes. Some riders are making a weekend out of it, so they may be riding around on Sunday morning as well. Anyone is welcome to attend, the older the bike the better, but any bike is ok. There is only one rule, NO Lycra!!! Of course the road rules must be obeyed.

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video
ONLY THE BRAVE is the true and recent story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a brotherhood of heroes who became one of the elite, if not the best, firefighting teams in all of North America.
Rigorous training, study and qualification testing against the most dangerous fires follow, and through hard work, dedication and brotherhood they gain that certification and the famous Granite Mountain Hotshots are born.
In 2007 the local firechief in Prescott, Arizona is repeatedly frustrated when time after time the actions of his team, and his decisions and suggestions as chief are overuled and ignored by Type 1 or “Hotshot” frontline firefighting crews flown in from far away.
The experience changes and matures the men, especially the kid, into a magnificent team forged by fire and they are sought after to fight infernos all over the USA... from Mexico to Canada, from East coast to West.
Eric, or “Supe” as the boys call him has decades of experience and an uncanny knack of “reading” the fire - knowing what the fire is going to do next given the terrain, the fuel load and the current weather.
Then, in 2013 they are confronted by the notorious Yarnell fire. As they fight this ravenous beast The Granite Mountain Hotshots, this unique brotherhood must risk everything to save an entire town. Their lives, their homes - everything they hold dear.
Sadly, when his suggestions are ignored by the Hotshots it proves costly for his community.
‘It’s not What stands in front of you, it’s Who stands beside you.”
Supe decides to fix this situation by doing something unprecedented. Never before has a U.S city had its own recognized and certified team of Hotshot firefighters, but he sets out to recruit the Mayor and earn that certification.
ONLY THE BRAVE is the gripping true story of 20 heroic men and the people around them. Starring Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, Taylor Kitsch and Miles Teller as the kid, the film was artfully directed by Joseph Kosinsky, it runs for just over two hours and is rated “M” for “coarse language” (personally I think PG13 is okay here).
He signs up some new team members, including one dodgy kid who has been aimless and constantly in and out of trouble. Supe sees something in the kid and decides to give him a chance.
Happy
70th Birthday
ONLY THE BRAVE... Loved it!

Lights - Camera - Action for Clint Lennox
11.
Clint describes his character, the homeless man as “similar to God. He sees everyone and everything however doesn’t intervene in their lives or situations”.
Local resident Clint Lennox plays a homeless man in the world premiere of Rockhampton movie ‘Lost & Found’ which was shot in Rockhampton in September 2016. The feature film will be screening at McKeague Hall, Rockhampton Girls Grammar School on the 14th April 2018 at 7.00pm. Ticket sales have exceeded expectations. There is a possibility that another screening will be available soon, however this is yet to be confirmed. The story of ‘Lost & Found’ revolves around a group of people who live in Rockhampton and their individual stories and lives over a week. The crew and cast are all locals, and Mount Morgan is proud that one of our own is involved in the project.
This isn’t Clint’s first time in front of the cameras as he was previously in a short film called ‘The Marriage’ for the Sydney Film Festival. When asked how he came to be involved with the film Clint replied.“I saw the casting call in the Bulletin initially. When I saw that Ian Westley was the Director I thought, I have to get involved in this!” “I’ve worked with Ian before and he’s amazing.” Clint said. “I’ve wanted to be an actor since age five and it’s all I’ve dreamt about”. Clint said. He continued. “I really enjoyed working with such a fantastic group of people. Very warm and talented and lovely peole. It was a pleasure to work with them.” Clint Lennox is certainly a name we will be hearing more of in the future there’s no doubt about that. Well done Clint!

Our Easter Themed Dance was held on Saturday 24th March 2018. Approximately 40 people enjoyed the evening with a combination of live music and CD music, Line Dancing and Old Time Dancing and a scrumptious supper included in the entry price. Jackie Miekle was the winner of the Lucky Door Prize of a Patchwork Cushion and matching Runner. Jackie was also the winner of the Fruit & Vege Tray Raffle. Abbey and Ethan were the winners of the Children’s Easter Bonnet Competition with Cassie winning the Adult’s section with her very interesting Hair Decoration. There were many winners in the Tombola Raffle and lots of Easter Eggs on offer for everyone. Thank-you to everyone who attended and contributed to our event. Your support is very much appreciated. The Baree Committee hopes everyone had a safe and happy Easter.
