Above: The second Waterskiing Qld Tournament was held on the weekend at No. 7 Dam. While the dam’s water level meant that skiers were closer to the edge than they liked to be, it also kept the action closer to the spectators and made for great viewing. Results and details next issue.

who live on this street. A lot of their houses sit very close to the road, and the dust can really pick up,” said Cr Rutherford.
Councillor Williams, Chair of the Infrastructure Committee, has said the works will be welcomed by the community.
“We would also like to thank the residents on River Road for their patience while these road works take place.”
“River Road has become quite busy in recent years,” said Cr Williams, “There are now fourteen houses on this street, and I’m sure the families that live here will really appreciate this road being sealed.”
Works on River Road commenced on Monday, 18 February, and are expected to take six weeks.
Councillor Rutherford, local divisional councillor, has said works like this are a great example of Council’s commitment to progressively upgrading Mount Morgan’s infrastructure. “The dirt road was an inconvenience to the people
The road is currently closed except to local traffic, and there are personnel onsite to assist local traffic through the roadworks. There are no detours. Updates on the project will be posted to the Works in my Area section of the Council website, and members of the community can contact Customer Service on 1300 22 55 77 with any questions or concerns.
CHURCHES UNITE IN PRAYER World Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries, annually, on the first Friday in March. The movement aims to bring people of various races, cultures and traditions together in a yearly common Day of Prayer, resulting in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year.
Housing is expensive pensions are low, jobs are few and low-paid and many women are working full-time while caring for families. However it is famous for its mountains and natural forests, home to many endangered birds and animals, and underwater limestone cave systems under the Karst plateau.
Each year a different country prepares the worship service material and this year the women from Slovenia chose the theme ‘Come – Everything is Ready’.
The “Trauma Counselling for Women in Slovenia” project received the funds from the collection taken at the service. This will provide funds to assist the violence, abuse, suicide, alcoholism and post-war wounds, divorce, death and depression in families.
Mount Morgan’s Sacred Heart Church hosted the local service, followed by morning tea, on Friday, 1 March commencing at 10.00 am. The morning began with a most informative and enlightening account of her own experiences in Slovenia by local resident Noelene Crone. Throughout the worship service, participants heard the stories of those who were coming to the table of bread, wine, water, and salt. Their stories reflected the political and economic situation from the time Slovenia was a socialist-communist state to today.
Thank you to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Mount Morgan Members for hosting the service this year. The Mount Morgan Anglican Church look forward to hosting the 2020 Service - Zimbabwe Article submitted Rhonda Ramm (Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Mount Morgan - Secretary)
These were the voices of the refugee and migrant workers, the mothers, the grandmothers, the wives, and the Roma people. Everyone who attended was touched by the stories from the women of Slovenia and could relate their stories to those from many families here in Australia. Slovenia is a central European country surrounded by Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. It was established as, a democratic parliamentary republic on 25 June 1991 after breaking away from Yugoslavian rule. Slovenia is one third the size of Tasmania! 13 - 27 March 2019

MMPHS NEWS Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic: We are very excited to announce the commencement of Cardiac Rehabilitation program on 11 March at Mount Morgan. This program is supported by a cardiac nurse and an exercise physiologist plus a gym set-up. The program will be held in the Community Health House, twice a week on a Monday and Wednesday. This program is for people with a history of cardiac issues but also is a preventative program for people with risks of cardiac disease such as family history of heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Referrals will be received from your GP, nurses, allied health staff and you can also self-refer. All referrals will be assessed by the cardiac team for suitability to do the program. Best practice research shows that people who have had a cardiac event are less likely to have another event if they participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program. This program is part of our Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service 2030 vision of “providing care closer to home”, and has been identified as a long-term need in our Mount Morgan Multipurpose Health Service plan.

Trails form part of giant leap It is perhaps fitting that in the year that the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “one giant leap for mankind”, Mount Morgan, with the assistance of Rockhampton Regional Council, will be taking giant leaps of its own towards a bright and positive future. Priorities identified at the Roundtable Meeting held in Mount Morgan last November gained substance at the ordinary meeting of Rockhampton Regional Council when the report detailing some of the outcomes was tabled.
construction and vegetation management skills. A separate preliminary project design brief has been prepared by Council’s infrastructure planning team for the development of future stages, developing a rail trail along the vacant rail corridor beginning at the existing Mount Morgan train station located in Railway Parade and has two potential finish locations in either the Kabra or Gracemere townships.
From the responses given at the Roundtable Meeting, a number of projects have been identified for implementation including activating tourism opportunities through obtaining access to the Fireclay Caverns and creating tourism opportunities at the No. 7 Dam and the broader region through walking tracks and mountain bike trails. The proposed Mount Morgan Mountain Bike and Rail Trail is a proposed staged project with the first stage of the project taking riders and walkers on a proposed route circumnavigating the Mount Morgan No. 7 Dam and linking with the existing rail corridor passing many of the cultural, tourism and natural assets within the township. Stage one of the project would seek to develop a world class mountain bike trail that links all major tourism destinations together and include a mountain bike skills park.
Above: Image depicts how bike trails will fit within the natural environment around the No. 7 Dam
Mountain bike related tourism is a rapidly growing and popular area across the country and internationally. The Rockhampton Region’s First Turkey Mountain Bike Reserve has achieved significant success in the development of top competition-quality mountain bike facilities in Central Queensland and a similar project in Mount Morgan would provide a unique experience interlinking with the town’s other tourism destinations and driving growth in visitor numbers. Mountain Bike consultancy firm ‘Ground Creations’ have been engaged by Council and are currently developing a draft concept design for stage one of the project. The State Government’s ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ program provides training and paid employment to those jobseekers in the community to help build skills, qualifications and experience needed to enter and stay in the workforce. The program also provides for a paid supervisor/s to oversee work. The application window for the 20192020 funding round of this program opened on 7 February 2019 and it is recommended that Council puts forward an expression of interest for stage one of the project pending finalisation of the current concept design works currently being undertaken. Stage one of the project will assist the development of a new tourism asset for Mount Morgan while also providing local jobseekers with an avenue to develop Page 6

Festival committee seeks volunteers Running for 42 years now, the festival has undergone many changes. Our new committee is a mix of seasoned veterans and newcomers to their roles, and Members have many different skills that are well utilized throughout the year. Some events that we do are kids’ discos, the Gold Rush Hill Sprint BBQs, and of course the markets, Running the Cutter, Grand Parade, Brekky and Movie at the Dam, and other activities that go to make the Golden Mount Festival. There is a position for everyone, utilizing their strengths in website and social media management, treasury skills, article writing, cooking, graphic design, organizing and delegation, photography, heavy lifting, creative arts, supervision, music, and the list goes on. Though fit, able-bodied people are highly valued for the logistics of any event, we have quite a few members unable to assist physically, who are prized for their experience and other skills, so do not let disability, age or chronic illness stand in your way if you would like to join. Memberships costs $15 annually and if you want to just check out a few meetings, Friends of the Festival are free to join.

WELFARE SWIMMING CLUB REUNION Last month was the very first reunion of past swimmers from the Mount Morgan Welfare Amateur Swim Club from the 1950's which was organized by Carol Malivoire, and held at the Caboolture Sports Club in Morayfield on 22 February. The Reunion was an overwhelming success with 36 past swimmers plus partners making the trip from interstate. From NSW was Beverley King (Thornton) and Judith Tomjilanivich (Garner) from West Australia, Carole Kelly (Humphreys) from Victoria and Bronwyn Dudfield (Parker) Tasmania. Guests from the Rockhampton Clubs who had swam against us many times during our era were also invited. We were friendly rivals indeed over the late 50's and 60's. Highlight of the day was a quiz conducted by guest Frank Birchall with photos that were shared around the Group. There were many surprises to the amazement of some. It was hard to believe that some of us had not met since leaving the Mount after a span of 60 years, with everyone saying they had a wonderful day and it ended too quickly. Souvenir Pennants were available plus a take home laminated flyer with all attendees on the reverse side as a souvenir of the day. Apologies were sent from Cherie Tynan (McKeon), Kim & Deborah McKeon, Jayne Pendergast (Maher), Yvonne Bertoni and Sister Kay Pacey, Colin Murphy, Kevin Barnett, Patricia Waller, Harold Waller and Barbara Borland. There will be an ex-Mount Morganites Reunion again on Sunday, 27 October 2019 at the same venue. All enquiries forward to either Carol Malivoire. Email: caromal25@gmail.com or Frank Birchall. Email: fbirchall@bigpond.com or through the Mount Morgan Pride Facebook page.

Curiosities Old and New By Graeme Meade
Celluloid I recently purchased a collection of Japanese carved clam shell diorama’s and some other figurines, carved from celluloid. The Diorama’s are about 5 cm across and show rural scenes in the Japanese Netsuke style. Netsuke are miniature sculptures that were invented in Japan in the 17th century, and were carved into ivory, bone or wood. Celluloid is created from camphor and nitrocellulose and other things, with dyes added. Invented in the late 1800’s, the first of the modern day plastics, celluloid was originally used as an inexpensive imitation for ivory and tortoiseshell. Moving into the 1900’s it was used for hand mirrors, combs, hairbrushes, cuff links and jewellery. The early photos and moving pictures were made from celluloid, but it was very flammable, and as time passes it just crumbles away to nothing. One of the bicycles in my collection was made in 1932, and has mudguards made with celluloid. Naturally the celluloid is now very brittle and breaks easily if not handled with care. Table tennis balls, some guitar picks, and parts for various musical instruments were made with celluloid, however it is not widely used any more. As for the claim shells I believe they would have been originally carved out of smaller pieces of ivory, off cuts from larger carvings. In the 1930’s when the celluloid came along these became popular, as celluloid could be moulded as well as carved. Scenes with water were very popular, the water wheels would turn on a lot of them, others had boats, and some had bridges over the water. The early ones had little colour, mostly brown on cream, towards the 1970’s they were very colourful. These pieces are very collectable, there would be hundreds out there, everyone a little different, and they were not mass produced.

Movie Review THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN After a lifetime of entertaining the world, and even today at eightytwo years of age still a major heartthrob for many, Robert “Sundance Kid” Redford is retiring from acting, hanging up those spurs and packing away the most winning and charming smile in the business. Founder of the Sundance Institute and the highly regarded Sundance Film Festival which supports and develops emerging screenwriters and directors globally, Robert Redford will continue to be involved behind the camera, but for his swansong performance he has chosen to tell the story of Forrest “Woody” Tucker in THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN. (Not to be confused with the famous actor of the same name who we know as Sergeant O’Rourke in F-Troop.) A few details have been altered to enhance the flow of the telling, but apart from that, incredible as it seems, the story of Forrest Tucker
is true. The beginning of his criminal career was first noted when he was imprisoned in Florida at the age of 15. He became famous as an escape artist, succeeding in a series of audacious and often ingenious escapes a remarkable eighteen times (including from Alcatraz and San Quentin), with another failed twelve attempts along the way. Although he owned a gun and sometimes showed it during heists, he had never fired on or hurt anyone, although on two occasions the police thought he was shooting at them when his car backfired during getaways, and consequently they shot Forrest. In fact, many of his victims (and some of his jurors) commented that Forrest was “gentlemanly”, a man of great charm and style, often leaving the one being robbed feeling comforted, reassured and smiling... Actually liking the guy... At the age of sixty, Forrest told police investigators (some of
whom had a grudging admiration for him and sought to play the greatest game of “catch me if you can” ever) that he had finally “mastered the art of bank robbery”. He gathered up some of his greyhaired buddies and they went to work - just for the sheer love of it. They became known as “The Over The Hill Gang”. This is where we come in and where THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN begins... Settle in for a wonderful ride, most likely the last one with our Sundance Kid. THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN features an amazing cast alongside Robert Redford. We are graced with the presence and talents of Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Casey Affleck, Keith Carradine and the father of cool (“I know that guy, who is he?”), not normally seen in movies and doing a fantastic job, Tom Waits. The director is David Lowery, the film runs for an hour and a half and is rated M for “coarse language”. Personally I’d give it a PG13. THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN... Loved it!

Pride in Your Town Unfortunately, today we hear so much of the misbehaviour of many of the younger stars of the tennis world it is wonderful to reflect on the star players of Central Queensland in the past years and their wonderful sportsmanship. Of course Rod Laver must be top of this list. Rod started playing on a court they built near his home on the family’s cattle property outside Rockhampton. With his brothers, Trevor and Bob, they would drive in the old farm truck out to the Fitzroy River and shovel sand, silt and loam then take it home to make the court. As there was no TV at that time it was in the early 1950’s that he first met his heroes; Frank Sedgman, Lew Hoad, and Ken Rosewell. Laver earned a $15 sports store voucher for his 1960 win in Brisbane for the Australian Men’s Title. Today the winner receives $4.1 million dollars. Rod, the rocket, stands alone in tennis history for twice winning the tennis grand slam, taking the Australian, French, Wimbledon, and the US singles in the one year. Even though he has lived most of his life in Southern California, he is still the son of an outback cattleman and loves his steak and a glass of XXXX when he comes to Australia.
The Central Queensland bush was a wonderful place for our stars to grow up in, with great family and encouraging friends support, and good healthy competition. It was not easy to get to the top of their careers but with good fortune and true sportsmanship they are now remembered with great affection in the tennis world. Who will be our next star? Tennis was very popular in the Mount for many years. In the 1940s, 50s, 60s, it could boast of 15 courts being in use on any Saturday afternoon with A B and C grade fixtures .Almost 300 players were registered in the fixture teams. Sadly, it lost its popularity and now is only played by a few socially, although much enjoyed on TV. It is such a wonderful game, great exercise and generally encourages the best of sportsmanship. May it have a revival! Spotlight on Mount Morgan’s Organisations If you would like information on your club or organisation published in the Argus, please send your inclusions to mmpad@bigpond.com. Please send any photos as separate attachments and make sure they are of a high resolution.
Another great player was Roy Emmerson from Blackbutt. In his early days he spent his mornings, barefoot, building his fitness by running over frosty ground chasing the cows on his family’s farm. Roy Emmerson won 12 grand slam singles titles in the world’s major events, and also 16 doubles titles. At age 82 he also lives in California but in January 2017 he returned to Blackbutt for the unveiling of a statue honouring his remarkable career. Of course we cannot leave out Mal Anderson, who like Rod Laver learnt to play on a dirt court. His family ran a cattle property at Theodore. Anderson said it was tough going getting to the top then when you lived in the bush but I think we appreciated things more in those days. It was Harry Hopman, the great Australian coach who helped Mal in his career. Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall had turned professional and Hopman asked Mal to postpone his wedding and play in the Davis Cup. Thankfully Australia won the tournament and the wedding went on later. Now at 83 he resides with his wife of 61 years in a retirement village at Albany Creek, Brisbane. He says his greatest performances seem like they were only yesterday. Mal Anderson did play an exhibition game in Mount Morgan and it was exciting to see him. 13 - 27 March 2019

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR COMMUNITY GROUPS Mount Morgan, like many other communities, relies on community groups and organisations. They are the ones that run events, that deliver meals to the elderly, run community halls and they are always around to lend a helping hand. Over the next few editions of the Mount Morgan Argus, the spotlight will be on these organisations. Depending on space, at least one article will be run in each issue. This issue the spotlight will be on St Mary’s Senior Citizens Village and the Mount Morgan Historical Museum, two of the town’s longest running organisations. The original Mount Morgan Historical Museum was situated on East Street in a building donated by Mr. J. J. Kelly (a former Operations Manager of Mount Morgan Limited) and was previously a business trading as Dee Jays. The small entry fee of $6 for adults $4 concession and $2 for children and donations from the public, play a major part in keeping the museum operational on a day-to-day basis with larger monetary requirements being covered by Grants. The Museum is open seven days a week with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Good Friday. The Museum was officially opened 29 May 1967. The present day museum in Morgan Street is in a building built for James Stewart, a prominent Rockhampton businessman, as a department store in 1895 and donated to the Trustees of the Museum, by Mount Morgan Limited, in 1977. The museum was officially opened to the public in this location on 21 November 1983.
