At our Red Frog Christmas Party we farewelled our Kindy Graduates who are all commencing Prep in 2018. All the Red Frog children performed for their families and received and gave gifts and certificates. Santa was so busy with his preparations for his upcoming huge night of delivering gifts all over the world, that he was given a break from harnessing and flying his reindeer team to attend a very special event.

Red Frog 4 Early Childhood Education in Mount Morgan organised for Santa to be transported to the Red Frog Children’s Christmas Party once again by helicopter, but not just any helicopter. This particular helicopter was pink and sports the ribbon that is now so recognisable Australia wide. Cameron Parker from Parker Helicopters is the man who flies this amazing machine and told us that he constantly saw people in country areas affected by cancer, and this was a way that he could raise awareness for sufferers. The Red Frog children and their families were in awe as they witnessed Santa arriving and departing in such a different and exciting way. Cancer Council Qld and Relay for Life representatives were in attendance and accepted a donation to their organisation from Red Frog 4 Early Childhood Education and Parker Helicopter Services.
News From Welfare Bowls Club The Club is now open for 2018 after some renovations to the Green and the surrounds and our first social game will be on Friday evening on the 19th January, with a 6.30 pm start. This will then be followed by Sunday Morning Bowls and Breakfast and a membership sign on starting from 8am. Any new players are always welcome to attend. Membership fees remain the same as last year which is $85.00 full membership and $20.00 for Social Membership. This year marks 100 years of bowling in Mount Morgan and we thank the dedicated people that have contributed to keeping this club going over the many years since 1918.

Buy Local Campaign Mount Morgan’s CBD was awash with excitement on Wednesday the 20th December 2017, for the drawing of the winning ticket for the $500 cash prize in the Buy Local Campaign. The promotion was exclusively for Mount Morgan Businesses who chose to participate, and customers who purchased $10 and over from any of these businesses had the opportunity to go in the draw to win the cash prize. We thank Rockhampton Regional Council for providing the $500 cash, and Carol and Brian Stock for the barrel. There was silence, in the almost complete gazebo as those gathered eagerly watched Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cherie Rutherford (pictured below right) dig deep in the barrel to draw the winning entry. The winner was Mick Maher whose purchase at NewsXpress Mount Morgan saw him claim the $500 cash prize. Congratulations to Mick (pictured below left). Thank you to all the Businesses who participated in the promotion and to everyone who shopped in Mount Morgan and supported local Business.
Christmas Lights Competition Well done to all the Mount Morgan residents who decorated their homes with brilliant displays for our Christmas lights competiton which was judged on Wednesday the 20th December 2017. There was certainly a lot of effort, ingenuity and of course expense involved in the wonderful displays. The winners of the competition were 1st Prize – David & Maree Pezzack $100, 2nd Prize - Eileen Burgess $50 and a tie for 3rd Prize – Crescent Randall & Luke Tyne $25 each. Thank you to St. Mary’s Anglican Church for their donation of $100 for the competition. See our Facebook page for more photos. CPR and First Aid Certificate Training Several volunteers, staff and executive renewed their CPR certificates on Monday the 8th January 2018. MMPAD’s commitment to training provided the opportunity for new volunteers to attend the course and attain their first aid certificate. Don McCall from Ability Plus Training Services was the facilitator and assessor for the course which was held at the Railway Tourist Information Centre. Pictured left (Business Trainee, Samantha Robinson practices her CPR) Fingerlings Each year, MMPAD take great pride in seeing the Mount Morgan Dam become home to thousands of new inhabitants. Through a Queensland Government restocking management plan, MMPAD purchases the recommended type and quantity of fingerlings from regional fish hatcheries, which we are able to release into our No. 7 Dam. Due to inclement weather in 2017, we weren’t able to release any fingerlings into the Mount Morgan Dam, however mid February 2018 should see the release of approximately 9500 fingerlings rather than the usual 8840. RADF Information Session
Friday 12th January 2018, saw 17 representatives from various organisations in town, attend a free Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) information session at the Mount Morgan Railway Complex. Louise Hales (pictured below), RADF Liaison Officer, from Rockhampton Regional Council presented an informative session which included: an overview of RADF, the various categories of funding available for grants, through to the application process and was able to assist participants with enquiries regarding particular projects. “ I was very pleased with the turnout today”, Louise said, “and I’m sure that we’ll have some projects that will benefit the Mount Morgan community”.
$24 538 Successful projects in Regional Arts Development Fund Contemporary art tutorials, exhibitions and drama workshops have all received funding totalling $24 538.48 under the latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund. The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and local Councils across the state. Rockhampton Regional Council’s Community Services Committee Chair Councillor Rose Swadling said she was delighted that RADF supported the local arts industry. “Several times a year RADF supports our local artists, performers, craftspeople and groups with financial assistance for their community events, workshops or professional development,” Cr Swadling said. “The most recent allocation of $24 538.48 will contribute towards workshops, exhibitions and professional development tutorials. “We’re very thankful for the State Government’s continued support for our local Arts industry through RADF, which of course has wonderful flow on benefits for our community so they can enjoy live performances, exhibitions, community events or gain better skills, knowledge and understanding of the Arts with workshops and courses.” The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Rockhampton Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. The Queensland Government, through Arts Queensland, is contributing $2.08 million to the 2017-18 RADF partnership across 59 councils statewide. Projects funded: CQ Contemporary Artist - $3395 to bring two tutors to Rockhampton to facilitate two separate workshops in 2018. Recollection Artist - $13 500 to mount a joint exhibition of new works re-examining the distinct cultural identity of the Rockhampton region, based on the books The Early History of Rockhampton and Battler’s Tales of Early Rockhampton. Plural Theatre - $3818.48 to conduct theatre workshops with young people in foster care, exploring their emotional wellbeing as they approach transition from care. Rockhampton Art Gallery – $3825 to develop and present a large scale, engaging exhibition providing opportunity for artists working in the Central Queensland Region. The next round of the Regional Arts Development Fund will close on 12 February 2018, for projects commencing after 22 March 2018. The Dee Bowls Club The Dee Bowls Club will have its green open right through January 2018 and up to the second weekend of February. The club house is open for business throughout the year. We are seeking interested caterers for an upcoming President’s Day and other invitational bowls days in 2018. The Dee Bowls Club is hosting the Mount Morgan Rodeo Association for a “Barefoot Bowls” day on Saturday 10th February 2018. Come on down and enjoy the fun and frivolity. 2. Sunday 4th March the club is having a “Special Bowls Day” with $1000 prize money. Free Entry, gold coin sausage sizzle. Sausage sizzle starts around 4pm Social ‘2 Bowl’ Triples. (16 ends) If more than 16 teams enter, first half of the teams will play 8 ends, come off and the next group will play their 8 ends then first team will return to complete their remaining ends with second group to follow. Names need to be in by 1pm for a 1:30pm start. Prize money has been donated and as at 1st January 2018 stands at $1000. Donations to extend prize money gladly accepted. Ice Breaker Game - Corner to Corner $2.00 entry at 1:10pm Conditions of play for Triples Played under Bowls Aust Laws of the game except for: • All teams must contain at least one social bowler and no more than one affiliated bowler • No drives allowable • Sledging incurs $5.00 penalty on each occasion if dobbed in • All players must wear “mufti” attire with $2.00 penalty for any garment above the knee bearing either white or club colours • If one bowler is over 6ft 6ins, their team will be given 3 extra points

We would also like to pay respect to two long term Life Members, now sadly deceased, for whom the club owes much to: Stan Lowrey and Madeline Reinecker, and along with three distinguished present Honorary Life Members, will hold a special day in their honor later in 2018. Council launches Emergency Dashboard Rockhampton Regional Council has launched a new tool designed to ensure residents have access to a range of emergency information at their fingertips, both during disasters and all year round. The dashboard, located on the front page of Council’s website, pulls together a range of material including weather warnings, power outages, road closures and any emergency news into one central location. It provides details of local radio stations, as well as the phone number for the Local Disaster Coordination Centre. Social media feeds from organisations including the BOM, emergency services and communications companies are also easily accessible. Chair of the Local Disaster Management Committee, Councillor Tony Williams, said he was very proud of the project. “Not only will having all this information in one place make it much easier for people ahead of and during disasters, but will also help build community resilience all year round. “I am very proud that Council is providing tools like this which will make a real difference to our residents and businesses.” Acting Mayor of Rockhampton Region, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said the dashboard would be extremely useful in the weeks and months following a disaster. “We all know how challenging and disruptive our weather can be at times, and the impact on our community can be significant. Have you ever wondered what happens at the big building behind the Welfare Bowls Club? The great old building is called Welfare House and it has a grand history that is associated with the Golden days of the Mount Morgan Mine. Now, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the ladies of Mount Morgan meet to enjoy good company and learn new skills. On Tuesday between 9.00am and 2.00pm we meet and learn skills such as patchwork, Teddy Bear making, Embroidery and any other craft that we think we should try. On Wednesday we meet between 9.00am and 2.00pm and ceramics is the art that we tackle. We have two dedicated and talented ladies who are very happy to teach you how to achieve your dream. Thursday from 9.00am until 12.00pm the ladies sit and chat while learning to knit and crochet. We have been in the Welfare House building for a lot of years and last year the Rockhampton Regional Council did us proud with upgrading and painting the entire building. We would like to show the people of Mount Morgan and surrounds the improvements, so we are planning to have an open day in March to show anyone who is interested what we do. By doing this we hope to recruit a few new members who also share our pride of the Mount Morgan Welfare House and who also wish to learn a Craft that we provide. Further information on our open day will be advertised in later editions of the Argus. The fees are only $3.00 each visit and this helps us pay the rent to the Council and insurances that are necessary to run any organisation. Three times a year on the first Saturday in April, July and November we have a Cent sale and again the community come together and support this so this also helps us to make ends meet. The President of the Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group, Heather Barker, said that men and women are very welcome to attend and try their hand at any of the projects or crafts that have been mentioned. We can teach you anything that you want to learn if you are interested and you only have to provide the materials required on a Tuesday and Thursday. We have clay and paints for the Wednesday Ceramics at a small cost. Even if you just want to have a look at Welfare House please come along on one of these days and we will be only too happy to show you around. Pride in Your Town Another year to enjoy and hopefully have good health to become more actively and involved in our town’s progress. With Morgan Street almost completed our town Motto of “Think Clean – Be Tidy” is more important than ever. We all want a town to be proud of and look attractive so it is up to all of us to achieve this. Hopefully, when Carbine becomes operational we will have extra tourists coming to see our re-born gold mine, and hopefully a very neat and tidy township. Over the Festive season I received a book titled “A Remarkable Gift”. 100 years of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust. I really do want to share part of the introduction with you as it gives a true meaning of the gift. This is part of the introduction. “As Clare lay dying in a Brisbane hospital in 2009 there was a concern that played over and over in her mind. Forty years previously she had given birth to a little boy, Shaun. He had lived for only 30 hours and Clare had been unable to come to terms with having left him in Cairns in an unmarked grave. Complex social and family situations meant she had never been to visit the graveside and rectify the situation. Clare told her story to the hospice social worker and a call was made to the Walter and Eliza Hall trust in Sydney. One telephone call lead to another and within days there was a plaque on the grave with the words; “Shaun aged 30 hours, Sleep well my angel, from your loving Mother”. The Cairns City Council had promised to send a photograph of the plaque once it was on the graveside. Not long after receiving the photograph, Clare passed away. This is but one of the thousands of stories that demonstrate the significance of the Trust to those it helps. Although the $192 required for the plaque was a seemingly insignificant amount, to Clare it was a large sum on money. Perhaps more importantly for Clare it was the unusual ability, for a charitable organization, to be able to respond immediately and provide a type of assistance that generally cannot be met by other charities. The Walter and Eliza Hall Trust stands out as the most important philanthropic venture undertaken in the early years of the twentieth century in Australia. Its history which abounds in fascination covers the last century up until the present day and a treatment of how it originated and developed is long overdue.” Further it says “The Trust Deed laid out the purposes for which the funds were to be used. They were: The relief of poverty. The advancement of education. The advancement of religion in accordance with the tenets of the Church of England. The general benefit of the community not falling under the preceding heads.” These form part of the generalised funding categories – the heads of charity that still operate today and generally give Trustees the widest capacity possible to carry out charitable work. Copper Fire Side Boxes

When these arrived in the shop it bought back lots of memories to me. My childhood home had these beaten copper wood boxes surrounding the open fire in the living room. Seating was at premium in our place, so I spent many evenings sitting on one of these. Best thing was during winter, if you were sitting there you got to play with the fire. So sometimes during winter these little seats were the premium spots.
These boxes were bought up from Tasmania; every house down there would have had fire places in them in the 1930s to 50s when these boxes were popular. This one is made from timber about 1 inch thick; it is about 30 cm tall and 28 cm x 36 square. They are covered with beaten copper on 4 sides, and on this one the end that would face out into the room has an outline of a Roman driving a chariot. There is a hole in one side for the fire surround that would go around the fire place; this would be covered with beaten copper as well. Some sets of these would also come with a matching fire screen. The fire screen would usually feature the same design as the boxes, but the design would be bigger. My Grandparents’ house had a large beaten copper fire screen, it had camels and some pyramids on it. I think the boxes in my family home had horses on them. Good memories.
