MG MAGIC ON THE MOUNT
The purr of MG (Morris Garage) engines could be heard throughout Mount Morgan on Sunday, as members of the Capricorn Chapter of the MG Car Club of Queensland travelled to Mount Morgan for their monthly outing. Each month the club travels to a different location, partly to give their vehicles a “run”, and partly to please these car enthusiasts!.
Club President, Gary Kunst said the club meets twice a month. Their first meeting is usually a dinner in Rockhamtpon and the second meeting, every third Sunday, is usually a drive to one of the nearby communities. “Sometimes the club members will go on a longer drive,” Gary said. Last year the members travelled to Townsville and on a previous
occasion, they travelled to Winton. These trips are usually weeklong trips. In a fortnight’s time, the club will travel to the Burnett, Mary and Brisbane River valleys. About 50 percent of the MG’s in the club have been restored by the members, while the remaining 50 percent were purchased as is. “The more serious members will buy the vehicle and restore them,” He said.

Residents urged to comment on strategy Advance Rockhampton is keen to hear from the Mount Morgan community as to whether the Draft Advance Mount Morgan Strategy hits the mark or changes to the document should be made. You have until 27 June 2019 to have your voice heard on this one! The Draft Advance Mount Morgan Strategy has been created in line with a strategy development methodology that has been utilised for significant Council led strategies such as the Mount Archer Activation Master Plan and the Rockhampton Recreational Fishing Development Strategy. This methodology utilises community and stakeholder engagement as a foundation platform to collaborate and formulate a broad range of initiatives for a specific outcome. In the case of Mount Morgan, the end outcome sought is an improvement to the economic prosperity of the township and its residents.
6. Mount Morgan Pride Plan 7. Marketing, Tourism and Events Plan Residents are encouraged to read the draft strategy which is available online at https://engage. rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/mount-morganstrategy or via hard copy which can be found at the Mount Morgan Customer Service Centre or at the Mount Morgan Library. Feedback forms can be completed to provide your views, either completed online or via hard copy. After the engagement is completed, a report to Council with the findings will be undertaken. Here is the screenshot of the Draft Advance Mount Morgan Strategy Survey on Council’s EngagementHQ
The draft strategy that has been developed has seven plans aimed at improving economic prosperity, include: 1. Business Development and Support Plan 2. Employment, Education and Training Plan 3. Mount Morgan Dam Plan 4. Prehistoric, Cultural and Historical Destination Plan 5. Adventure Tourism Plan
Council in the black for seventh consecutive budget surplus Rockhampton Regional Council’s de-amalgamation debt legacy has dropped to record lows with more than $41.5 million now paid off.
(that means we are not cutting essential services or maintenance), and keeping our rates as low as we possibly can.
In handing the draft 2019-20 Budget to Councillors, Mayor Margaret Strelow said it was incredibly satisfying to see the impact that strong financial management can have.
“This is also the 7th successive year that Council has reported a surplus budget, which is proof of a culture of diligence and solid budget management.
“This legacy of de-amalgamation continues to cost us dearly, and the longer the debt goes on the more it will cost us,” Mayor Strelow said. “So it is pleasing to announce that, in just over six years, we have reduced our debt by $41.5 million, around a quarter of our inherited amalgamation/deamalgamation debt. “Our total debt as at 30th of June this year, is just under $120 million with around $50 million cash at bank. We will keep chipping away at repaying the debt, maintaining a surplus position in our budget Page 4
“I really want to take a moment to recognise just how far we have come. “At de-amalgamation it was predicted that, without taking action, the cost of splitting would leave us insolvent within two years. “Our current ten year plan was assessed by the Department of Local Government, and - after assessing our short and medium term capacity and making judgements about our long term viability the report concluded that we had the appropriate capacity to manage core business risks. Council budget in black...From Page 4 “This might sound like faint praise, but considering the scale of Council and the challenges that we have had, the result is a testament to the solid financial management of our team and the backbone shown by the elected council. “We made the hard calls and have kept a tight grip
on the purse strings and, as a result, we are now in the strongest financial position we have been in since de-amalgamation. “The most important thing we need to continue from here is to maintain the same level of discipline while delivering the core services of local government and investing in opportunities for growth in our community,” Mayor Strelow said.
Green keeper remembered at Memorial Day After the game the players had a few refreshments and sat down to a BBQ lunch and the drawing of the raffles. David Millers, who was the Welfare Bowls Club’s voluntary greenkeeper, passed away after attending the club’s Christmas breakup party in December 2016. He was looking forward to his retirement in 2017 as he would have turned 65. David was an all round sportsman excelling in football, cricket, golf and lawn bowls. He also worked for many years at The Dee Bowls Club and at North Rocky Bowls Club. Dave has been sadly missed at the Club. Thank you to Paul & Elaine for making the day possible and we hope to go on and make this an annual event. The David Millers Memorial Day was played on Sunday, 16 July at the Welfare Bowls Club. A full green of triples players played for the David Millers Memorial Shield and the generous prize money which was donated by David’s good mate Paul Dobson and his Mother Elaine Millers. Players came from Wowan, Gracemere and Rockhampton. The winners were Nick Jones, Gail Bellet and Gary Walker from Gracemere. Prize money was given to first, second and third places as well as a Sportsman’s prize.

Generosity restores Jared’s Memorial
Jared’s first memorial was removed from its plinth rock early December 2018 and despite an exhaustive search to locate the statue of a young boy holding a firefly in a glass jar, it was never relocated. Mark Cations from Bush Designs decided to offer his assistance when his wife heard about the theft of the original statue. Mark said he felt honoured to be able to assist the Bannah family. “Tereasa has suffered enough,’’ he said. Mark hand desgined and cut the memorial from a photo of Jared, and included the Red-tailed black cockatoos as Tereasa had told him of Jared’s particular attachment to these birds. The memorial was cemented into the ground by Leon’s Dingo and Excavator Hire, not far from where the original memorial had been placed. Rod Fuary manager of Leon’s Dingo and Excavator Hire said when Mark from Bush Designs contacted him for assistance with erecting the memorial he was happy to help. “It’s the least we could do to help a family who has suffered. Tereasa is such a lovely person,” Rod said. Tereasa Bannah (pictured) said she was happy that a new memorial had been restored to the No. 7 Dam. “It was a huge relief to have a memorial to Jared restored.
The generosity of two Bouldercombe businesses has restored the memorial to Mount Morgan boy Jared Bannah.
Bush Designs owner, Mark Cations joined forces with Leon’s Dingo and Excavator Hire to recreate the memorial for Jared.
“It makes you appreciate where you live and realise that there are really good people out there,’ Tereasa said.

WORKING BEE FOR COMMUNITY HALL Have you signed up to keep our Community Hall in local hands? If you become a member for $10 it allows the hall to remain community run and looked after. If you wish you can attend the meetings and have a vote, though there is no obligation. Your money will go towards general upkeep of rates, insurances, sundries and hopefully if enough funds are raised, some renovations. This lovely old building with a rich history, has played a part in many a Mount Morganites story. Weddings, dances, birthday celebrations, anniversaries and committee meetings in just recent years, and as the RSL further back, it has, cemented its worth in our most cherished memories. Unfortunately, with age, comes wear and tear, and the hall now needs some TLC.
Standing like a lone sentinel in East Street is the last of the gas lights in Mount Morgan. These lights were all around town at one time, being the street lighting, and serviced by the gas works. They were made at Mount Morgan Limited and the original wooden mould still leans against the wall of the silver shed in the grounds of the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. Council installed 53 of these lights placed around town .Horses for the gas fitters, who lit the lights and maintained them , were supplied by the gas company. These gas fitters would stand on the saddles of their horse to not only light the lamps, but also to check mantles, glass globes and adjust the lighting. In later years the local postman ‘Woodduck Williams’ had this job, putting the gas lights out when he did his morning mail run, and going out to relight them at dusk. Recently the gas light has had a repaint and change of fittings, but still stands there in East Street on the medium strip opposite where the old Mount Morgan Historical Museum used to be.
The committee have set Sunday, 30 June aside, for a free sausage sizzle, kindly donated by The Rodeo Association, and membership drive, followed by a working bee. We need to tidy out the bar and kitchen and do some general maintenance. If you can assist in any way, be it with your time and energy, cleaning products or equipment, mower fuel, a motivational speech…haha, then come on down. We would love to see lots of smiling faces, and many hands make for light work! The committee meeting will be at 10 am, new members are always welcome, and the sausage sizzle/working bee will begin around 11 am. Membership forms are available anytime at Mount Morgan Post Office, and on the day. You can also follow us on Facebook to keep up to date, or to contact us, email: mountmorgancommunityhall@ gmail.com We hope you can come along! Submitted by Kirra Swain Secretary

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video
Movie Review THE MULE Clint Eastwood has chosen THE MULE to be his first role since 2012’s TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE, and his first film as director and lead actor since 2008’s GRAN TORINO. Given Clint’s reputation and trackrecord of judiciously selecting box-office winners, an amazing cast of talented stars were keen to climb aboard THE MULE. Brad Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Pena, Dianne Wiest and Andy Garcia all turn in great performances, then for added interest Clint’s daughter Alison Eastwood does a wonderful job as his daughter in the film. Nick Schenk wrote the screenplay, expanding on a New York Times Article telling the true story of octegenarian and veteran Leo Sharp, entitled “The Sinaloa Cartel’s 90-year-old Drug Mule” by Sam Dolnick.
THE MULE tells the story of Earl Stone, prize-winning horticulturist and Korean War veteran. Earl is in his 80’s. He is estranged from his wife and daughter, he’s broke, alone and facing bank foreclosure on his business. Life is not looking good for Earl. Then just when things are at their darkest and all hope seemed fruitless, he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Earl loves driving and he’s good at it. He has always been a stickler for the road rules. Easy! However, unbeknownst to Earl, he has just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. Earl does well. So well in fact that his cargoes increase exponentially, and he is assigned his own handler. It turns out though that this mysterious new drug mule has also hit the radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin

Bates, so his handler is not the only one now keeping tabs on Earl. Even as his money problems fade into history, Earl’s past mistakes still weigh heavily upon him, and it’s uncertain if he’ll have time to right those wrongs before the law, or the cartel’s enforcers catch up with him. THE MULE runs for an hour and three quarters and is rated M for “Coarse Language & Nudity”. THE MULE... Loved it! President, Barbara Gould said many of the volunteers had gone above and beyond with their assistance. “Some provided more assistance than others, but all helped received was greatly appreciated. “Some who couldn’t help made generous dontations to the committee,” she said. Members of the Association made sure President Barbara Gould was acknowledged for her tireless efforts, presenting her with a beautiful flower arrangement.

Pride in Your Town How about our girl, Ash Barty? Not only a champion on the courts, but what a model for younger players with her temperament on court and good sporting manners. We wish her every success at Wimbledon and her future years as one of our best female players for many years. Go Ashley! With all the events of past years being recalled this week like the D-Day event and the 30 years of the Tiananmen square uprising we searched for a hero for ourselves. Our search came up with the name Doctor Samuel Jabez Richards. Dr Richards was born in Tasmania on 7 February, 1864. He attended the University of Sydney and obtained the degrees of Physician/Surgeon. He was the practising Doctor/Surgeon at the Mount Morgan Hospital in 1914. His brother, Captain G.A. Richards was manager of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company 1905-12. Doctor Richards felt that because the Australian Imperial Forces were short of Doctors, he would take himself off to war at the age of 50. He applied for a commission in the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force in 1914 and was appointed a Major. He embarked from Melbourne in December on board the HMAS

A55 Kyarra and was attached to the First Australian Clearing Hospital in Egypt for three months, then Gallipoli until his death on 21 July 1915. He set up his first casualty station on the beach of Gallipoli and then a hospital and from that moment he did not sleep for three days and two nights. It was his decision whether the wounded soldiers received a band aid on the wound or be sent to Malta or back to Australia for treatment. He was one of eight Doctors but very early he became the Doctor in Charge. Sadly, after only three months he himself fell quite ill and was taken by ship to Malta. He did not survive the trip and died and was buried at sea. He was Mount Morgan’s highest-ranking officer to die in the Great War. Doctor Richards had two sons, one a Doctor and the other a dentist. Both sons went to the Western Front, but both came home to Mount Morgan. In one of his letters to Mrs Richards, who apparently was still in Mount Morgan he spoke with gratitude to the Mount Morgan Sewing Guild who was sending triangular
bandages and stated they proved indispensable and he would be thankful for some more. He also stated in the letter that he had had a chat to the following men - possibly many were Mount Morgan men. Lieutenants H. Mc Laughlin, D. Rutherford, T.Fargher, Sergeants Jack Orr, Crain and Harry Foster, Privates C Hennegan, Percy Gooch, J O’Connor, Roy Swain, Alan Williams, and Claude Smith, and Trumpeter Stan Simmonds, They were all looking and feeling well. He also saw Sapper Stronghead and his party of miners from Mount Morgan. Perhaps some of our readers may recall some of those names. Mount Morgan does have a wonderful record of people who have passed through our town and have been successful in their choice of profession, and have made a difference to society. Now to news of local interest, with sections of our footpaths completed and looking so good more than ever we must - Aways Think Clean – to have a Tidy Town.

GOLFING NEWS Two of Mount Morgan’s golfing fraternity, Doug Wooffindin and Jai Browne recently attended the Queensland Sandgreen championships held in Tambo on the weekend of June 7-9. Competitions included 4-ball, best-ball on Friday, which Doug and Jai scored 51 points with the winners tying on 55 points. More than 160 competitors from throughout Queensland attended the championships. While Doug and Jai didn’t bring home the “blue ribbon”, they represented Mount Morgan Golf Club with dignity. In local competitions, Edward “Ted” Kay won the June Monthly medal played recently. The next few weeks will be quiet ones for Mount Morgan golfers, but have events such as the Junior Open in Theodore in the near future. If golf is a game that intrigues you, but you’re worried about not knowing anything about the game, the members of the Mount Morgan Golf Club will be more than happy to introduce you the game of golf.
DEE RIVER OLDIES Mount Morgan may have been known for the gold from the mine, but the people through the generations have really made Mount Morgan a town that we can all be proud. The people are passionate about the town. Many have been lucky to have lived the history and it really has given us the foundations that we have built our lives and raised our families. It has been said that Mount Morgan is only half an hour away from the rest of the world (well the airport in Rockhampton) but wherever you have travelled, there is no place like home. Winter has arrived with a vengeance. It certainly was a shock to the system. While we are more house bound in winter, the Dee River Oldies still have a mission to get the members out for their meetings, morning teas and bus trips. We are looking forward to more warmth and sunshine. Having a coffee and cake, meeting new people and having a chat all helps to brighten our day.The morning tea with a guest speaker is 26 June at 10am. Meetings and the morning teas are held in St Mary’s hall behind the Anglican church Gordon Street Mount Morgan. The seats for the bus trip are just about full. Please let the steering committee know, if you are interested. It is a Christmas in July lunch at Ferns Hideaway, Byfield on Friday 12 July 2019. The cost is $50 and will leave the bus stop in Morgan Street at 9.30 am. Until next time stay warm, happy and healthy. Submitted by the Steering Committee

FROM THE ARCHIVES OF RAY YOUNG The First Motorised Taxi Bert Enright standing beside his ʻEssexʼ taxi, in Mount Morgan, early 1930s. Sitting on the running board is hisbrother, Les; his eldest son, Michael is perched on the mudguard. This is believed to be the first motorised taxi in Mount Morgan. It is claimed that Bert Enright began the first motorised taxi service in Mount Morgan, in1932; but that was not the first taxi in the Mount - a Mr. Honeywell had a horse-drawn onebefore Bert started. Bert was a son of Mick Enright, a dairy farmer of ʻDee Parkʼ, Walmul, and Chairman of the old Town Council, up to the time of its closure in October 1931. The Town Council was replaced by the Mount Morgan Shire Council, the first Mayor of which was Henry Searle. Mr. Fred Bowen was the last Town Clerk and the first Shire Clerk. As can be seen, Bertʼs taxi, with its hinged windscreen and lack of wind-up windows, was fully air-conditioned. Bert charged his customers a flat fare: one-shillingand-sixpence. Later, Bert bought a
ʻFord V8 Pilotʼ - a big improvement on his old ʻEssexʼ - and continued his taxi service until August 1941. Bert married Agnes Young, in Walmul, on 10 June 1925. One of Bertʼs jobs when he was working for his father, Mick, was to deliver cans of cream (bound for the Wowan butter factory) to the Walmul railway siding, and to pick up the returned empties. Bert
met Agnes when she became the gatekeeper at the Walmul railway crossing, a job that came with asmall on-site cottage; but it came with one draw back- she had to be on-call 24 hours a day, - not that there her sleep would have been interrupted all that much in those days by motor vehicles or horsedrawn carts, thundering along the Dawson Valley Highway during the night.
FLETCHER CREEK WATER SUPPLY Testing the water bore at Fletcherʼs Creek water supply, early 1950s. L. to R.: Joe Banks (fitter), Jim Carmody, Vince Atfield, unknown person, Morgan Johns (General Manager of Mount Morgan Ltd), George Mullins, Tom Young, Glenister Sheil (Asst. G. M. and project engineer), Harry Fitzgerald (Shire Clerk), Norm Schuh, ʻCopperʼ Pheely, and an unknown person. It was in the early 1950ʼs that Tom Young and Barlow Price sunk the holes for the Fletcherʼs Creek water supply, using one of Mount Morgan Limitedʼs ʻmud puncherʼ boring machines. Once the holes were lined and a pump installed, the group shown in the photo were on hand to witness the commencement of pumping water from Fletcherʼs Creek underground reservoir. Pumping to the mine began in November 1953, and the town water supply was officially turned on, on 24 April 1954. 19 June to 3 July 2019
