MAYOR RE-ELECTED FOR ANOTHER TERM Argus publication continues case with Neil Fisher. Councillors Tony Williams, Drew Wickerson and Ellen Smith held uncontested divisions.
Mayor Strelow said finishing with 70 percent of the primary vote was a strong re-election. “I am grateful that I have the confidence of the community going into what is going to be a difficult couple of months ahead of us.
Rockhampton Regional Mayor, Margaret Strelow has been returned for another term as Mayor. Mayor Strelow received over 70 percent of the vote and has declared victory, even though the Queensland Electoral Commission will not finalise the poll for a couple of weeks. Division 5 Councillor, Cherie Rutherford is on track to be returned to her Division, as is the
“We’ll get through this and then start building our economy,” she said. Cr Rutherford said her numbers were looking good and she hoped that she would be re-elected. “It was really a strange election with the measures taken to reduce the risk of the coronavirus (Covid-19). “A lot of people were angry that the elections were still held, but this was in the hands of the Electoral Commission of Queensland,” she said.
As most people are aware, the Visitor Information Centre and Railway Museum has closed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The railway complex is a Rockhampton Regional Council facility. While possible, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc will continue to publish the Mount Morgan Argus. PANDEMIC MESSAGE
The following Facebook message was erroneously attributed to Bill Gates, but it has since been proven that Mr Gates was not the author. Regardless of who wrote it, there are some important messages in these challenging and difficult times.
hands. We can choose to cooperate and help each other, to share, to give, to help and to support each other or we can choose to be selfish, to hoard to look after only our self. Indeed, it is difficulties that bring out our true colours.
What is the Corona/Covid-19 virus really teaching?
10. It is reminding us that we can be patient, or we can panic. We can either understand that this type of situation has happened many times before in history and will pass, or we can panic and see it as the end of the world and, consequently, cause ourselves more harm than good.
I’m a strong believer that there is a spiritual purpose behind everything that happens, whether that is what we perceive as being good or being bad. As I meditate upon this, I want to share with you what I feel the Corona/Covid-19 virus is really doing to us: 1. It is reminding us that we are all equal, regardless of our culture, religion, occupation, financial situation or how famous we are. This disease treats us all equally, perhaps we should too. If you don’t believe me, just ask Tom Hanks. 2. It is reminding that we are all connected and something that affects one person, has an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, but oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression. 3. It is reminding us of how precious our health is and how we have moved to neglect it through eating nutrient poor manufactured food and drinking water that is contaminated with chemical upon chemical. If we don’t look after our health, we will, of course, get sick. 4. it is reminding us of the shortness of life and of what is most important for us to do, which is to help each other, especially those who are old or sick. Our purpose is not to buy toilet rolls. 5. it is reminding us of how materialistic our society has become and how, when in times of difficulty, we remember that it’s the essentials that we need (food, water, medicine) as opposed to the luxuries that we sometimes unnecessarily give value to. 6. It is reminding us of how important our family and home life is and how much we have neglected this. It is forcing us back into our houses so we can rebuild them into our home and to strengthen our family unit. 7. It is reminding us that our true work is not our job, that is what we do, not what we were created to do. Our true work is to look after each other, to protect each other and to be of benefit to one another. 8. It is reminding us to keep our egos in check. It is reminding us that no matter how great we think we are or how great others think we are, a virus can bring our world to a standstill. 9. It is reminding us that the power of freewill is in our Page 4
11. It is reminding us that this can either be an end or a new beginning. This can be a time of reflection and understanding, where we learn from our mistakes, or it can be the start of a cycle which will continue until we finally learn the lesson we are meant to. 12. It is reminding us that this earth is sick. It is reminding us that we need to look at the rate of deforestation, just as urgently as we look at the speed at which toilet rolls are disappearing off shelves. We are sick, because our home is sick. 13. It is reminding us that after every difficulty, there is always ease. Life is cyclical, and this is just a phase in this great cycle. We do not need to panic; this too shall pass. 14. Whereas many see the Corona/Covid-19 virus as a great disaster, I prefer to see it as a great “corrector”. It is sent to remind us of the important lessons that we seem to have forgotten and it is up to us if we will learn them or not.
DEE RIVER OLDIES The last few weeks have seen the need for the people of Australia to accept changes that they have never seen before. It is certainly a time when we need to look at our day, to do the best we can to get through this time. Looking at it long term is mind boggling. Just take it a day at a time. Looking out for family and friends all helps to make a difference. Having to cancel the March morning tea was a precaution for the wellbeing of our members. Our next meeting (which is still to be confirmed) is to be held a week earlier on 14 April 2020 starting at 2.00pm at St Mary’s Hall, Gordon Street, Mount Morgan. We are hoping to know where we go from there. The Steering Committee are only a phone call away. POLICE NEWS
The Mount Morgan Police would like to thank every one so far that has been abiding by the new social distancing advice and laws. We have seen the majority of people are listening and doing their part to fight the spread of COVID-19. As you are all aware a number of businesses have closed their doors as required by the government. These are difficult times but we all have a part to play. Please remember to secure your dwellings and businesses, there may be persons looking for opportunities to break into now closed businesses. If you see or hear of anything suspicious, please contact Policelink on 131 444. I will leave you with a few words you might remember before deciding to leave your house or socialising in a large group – ‘The virus needs movement to survive. We all stop moving and so does the virus, it dies.’ The sooner we all take this into consideration before we act, the sooner everything will return to normal. Stay home and be safe. New Challenges for local business Cyclones, floods, droughts and fires, we’ve coped through them all but COVID-19 is issuing new challenges like never before. We remain open as at (Monday 30 March) but we have reduced our trading hours. We may reduce them further yet as more and more people self-isolate. Unfortunately, we have had to reduce staff hours both for monetary and health reasons, so we appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience throughout. Newsagents are deemed essential services as for many people a newspaper is still their main form of communication and entertainment – we have a lot of crossword and phantom fans out there. If you’re in isolation and require anything please give us a call, we are more than happy to work out a solution for you. We can organize to send gifts and cards away to family for you. We can do drop off to family in Mount Morgan for you. (conditions apply) Now is a great time to send a card or present to someone to show you are thinking of them. Don’t forget Easter and Mother’s Day we can help with that too. If you are working from home we have INK, Stationery and can even get printers if needed. The same with schooling from home, whilst we can get supply we are stocking up on your home school needs and boredom busters. We have playing cards, jigsaws and other games. Maybe now is a good time to teach the kids chess? You can rest assured we are following all government regulations in store. We ask you respect your fellow shoppers by taking note of the restrictions of store numbers and social distancing. When this is over we are going to have the biggest street party where everyone can catch up and talk to their heart’s content but for now guys you just have to smile and wave. Stay safe everyone and we hope we are here at the end of it all. Submitted by NewsXpress, Mount Morgan

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video
Movie Review JUDY AND PUNCH Like STANDING UP FOR SUNNY, JUDY & PUNCH is another magnificent Australian production with some American input. A dark comedy thriller made just last year, JUDY & PUNCH is “utterly bonkers but brilliant”. It is a brutal, bizarre, twisted tale of love, revenge and puppetry. JUDY AND PUNCH are puppeteers in the small anarchic town of Seaside (which is nowhere near the ocean), where the rumblings of the local citizens are at the point of boiling over into rebellion. Our couple, alongside their baby daughter, are attempting to reboot their once famous marionette show and bring it to the fore, back into the public eye, to regain the favour of the people and refill their cups with precious coin. Both artists are brilliant puppeteers, but while it is Punch that has the driving ambition to succeed, it is Judy who is the real heart of the production. The new show is a smash (pun intended) hit! They’ve done it. They’re back. Success... Judy’s love for Punch however, has blinded her to the dark side of her partner. The violence exhibited at arm’s length through the marionettes comes from
a place deep within, and now with coin in his pocket he can once again indulge his love and appetite for whisky. Tragedy is almost inevitable. In a clever, visceral, dynamic live-action reinterpretation of the famous 17th Century puppet show, writer-director Mirrati Foulkes (in her directorial debut) turns the traditional story of Punch and Judy in its head and brings to life a fierce, darkly comic and epic revenge story. Headlining the wonderful Aussie global star Mia Wasikowska and Damon Herriman (The Sullivans, Justified, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood et al. Damon also won the 2019 AACTA award for his portrayal of Punch.), JUDY AND PUNCH runs for one hour and forty-five riveting minutes where you just can’t guess “what’s gonna happen next”. The rating of MA15+ for “strong violence” is warranted. We should be really proud of our incredible film industry. Aussies make great movies. JUDY AND PUNCH... Loved it!
Community Service Hall memberships It is that time of year that annual memberships of the Mount Morgan Community Service Club are due, and renewal forms are in the post.
We appreciate your ongoing support, especially during this unprecedented period that we are all going through. Rest assured your membership fee is well utilized, providing funds for the upkeep of facilities, and general running costs of the building. Due to the required closure of our lovely old Hall, sources of income are currently at a standstill, so your support now is more important than ever. Page 6
We understand financially things are tough at this time, so other ways you may be able to support your local community organizations, as we are all in the same boat, is via in kind donations of labor, goods or services. The odd mow of a lawn, for example, could just be the thing to relieve some of the burden that generally falls to the same people over and over again. The Executive Committee will continue to be busy working on paperwork and projects through the coming months, and though social isolation is necessary, where there is a will, there is a MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
way with skype meetings being organized. To join or renew, payment can be made in person at the Mount Morgan Post Office, or via cheque/money order and posted to PO Box 104, Mount Morgan QLD, 4714. The Executive Committee hope that all our Members and their nearest and dearest are able to stay safe and well, and wish you all the best in this time of uncertainty, and we thank you again for being an invaluable part of our Club. Local Artists...from Page 9 Sandra Howcroft – If you love stained glass works, Sandra is the lady to see. We have a few varieties of her suncatchers hanging in the Gallery, and her lamps made from beach glass are stunning. She has a Sprocket series also, that are very unique. Karen Dollery – Specializing in resin works, Karen’s Galaxy

Resilience in tough times about the pandemic, especially with the health of his staff on the line. IGA continues to offer its normal products as well as a full range of Easter Eggs. Mount Morgan Post Office proprietor, Ian Traynor said at this stage it was business as usual for the post office. “We still offer all of the services that are normally offered,” he said.
The Mount Morgan business community is used to tough times, but the Government imposed sanctions in light of the coronavirus (Covid-19) will pose the biggest challenge ever for these businesses. All businesses are implementing and enforcing social distancing, most are providing sanitiser for customers and all rigorously cleaning their stores. All are remaining open - some to lesser degrees than others. Mount Morgan IGA is maintaining their 8 am to 7 pm trading times. Owner Hugh McGilvray said where possible he was trying to ensure that the shelves continue to be stocked, but some items were difficult to source and maintain the level of stock. He said he was very concerned Page 12
Mount Morgan Hardware is continuing to operate as normal as is Stewarts Towing and Service Station. In recent times the thought of handling petrol bowsers when filling has caused concern. Melvene Stewart said most customers took advantage of the driveway service offered, but said the bowsers were regularly cleaned. Businesses providing meals have been restricted to providing takeaway meals only. The Grand Hotel is still providing lunches and dinners which can be collected from the Bottleshop which is open from 10 am to 8 pm daily. Manager, Melissa Chandler said the hotel was offering roast meals on Sundays and these will be availabe on Easter Sunday. These meals can also be delivered. MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
Mumma Kaths Kitchen is still open for its normal trading hours of 8 am to 7 pm for takeaway meals only.
“We are catering for the elderly by offering free home deliveries for lunches valued at $10 or more,” Teresa Lloyd said. These deliveries will be done on Thursdays and Friday nights only. Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop has reduced its hours - 5.30 am to 4 pm (weekdays) and 5.30 am to 3 pm (weekends). Mane Street Hair Salon is not taking on any new appointments until further notice. Kodie said she would be doing current bookings only. Mane Street Hair Salon was set to celebrate its third year at the end of April. Debi from the Silver Wattle Caravan Park, said the park was still open, but would had experienced many cancellations in the last few weeks. “What can you do, you just have to keep going,” she said. The Leichhardt Hotel has closed for the duration at this point in time. Golden Mount Taxi continues to operate as normal, taking extra precaution with regular cleaning of the cab. This is just a brief wrap up of the affects of the pandemic on some of the Mount Morgan businesses. Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said that, like the State and Federal Government, Council is putting its shoulder to the wheel during these difficult times to help the community where possible. “The situation around COVID-19 is changing incredibly quickly, and we know that our community is already feeling the economic impact of this pandemic,” said Mayor Strelow. “I’m also very mindful that our rates are collected based on property value and regardless of income, and that we need to think of the fairness of using ratepayer money – which includes money paid by pensioners and those struggling – to support business. “However, we know that recovery for our community will be smoothest if we can help to keep our local businesses alive and keep people employed. “We believe that there are many things that we as a Council can and should do to support local business, as well as provide some relief to residents and our community more generally. “The package of measures that we’ve introduced today includes extending existing Food Business, Personal Appearance Business and Activities, and Food Van Licences until 30 June 2021. “It also allows for us to provide rent relief for our commercial tenants. “And we’ll be providing lease fee refunds on application to community groups and sporting clubs in the Region. “On top of this, we have resolved today that there will be no additional interest charged on Outstanding Rates until the end of December. “These measures are a first step and will apply immediately. “There will also be a further economic stimulus package brought before the new Council, which will include a revised Rates Payment Policy. “We know our community is hurting and Council as an organisation will stand shoulder to shoulder with our residents during these tough times,” Mayor Strelow said.
Sgt. Misty Evans gave the 2019 ANZAC Day address (Right) and left Warwick Armstrong.ddress As you all are aware the government has closed down public gatherings and this includes ANZAC Day. Therefore, the Mount Morgan sub-branch has decided to offer an alternative way of marking ANZAC Day for 2020. At 6.00 am please assemble at your front gates with a lit candle and observe one minutes silence in memory of all those who have made the supreme sacrifice in the service to Australia. If you wish to lay a wreath at ANZAC Park please do so, after 9.00 am and remember to observe the social distancing required by the government. On behalf of the members of the sub-branch, we hope that the members of the Mount Morgan community come through these trying times ahead safe and sound. To all Veterans past and present I thank you for your service and we will be thinking of you on ANZAC Day 2020. To all Mount Morgan sub-branch members, all future meetings are suspended for members. However, the executive board will still meet as usual to keep the sub-branch going during the virus shut down. Any questions please contact me on 4938 2755 or 0497 277 339.
