RITE OF PASSAGE FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS In 2007 Prep Education was introduced into Queensland 12 years later the first cohort of Prep students donned their finest formal wear and celebrated their rite of passage, finishing Year 12. Breaking with tradition the 2019 Formal was held on Thursday, 14 November instead of Friday. On Friday, 15 November the same students, a little weary from their big night, walked onto their last High School parade to Maroon 5’s “Memories”. Students were presented with their formal Graduation Certificates and some, not so formal peer-awarded certificates, cut the Graduation Cake, were handed the School Bell to ring throughout the day and walked through an Guard of Honour made up of their fellow students.

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review THE SON - S2 They simply called themselves “the people”. The name by which they became known as the valiant and fierce horseborne warriors who drove renowned fighters, The Apache from the Great Southern Plains of the USA was taken from the title given them by the Ute indians, “kimantsi”, which translates loosely to “he who wants to fight me all the time”. Soon, all over the world people came to know them as “Comanche”. They split from the Shoshone in the north, migrating south in search of horses brought to the continent by Spanish settlers. It was inevitable that they would lock horns with the Apache who reigned over Northern Mexico, South and South West USA, which was then known as New Spain, in a turf war that lasted throughout the entire 18th century.

Their power was sourced from bison and horses, and it was their practice to take captives from the weaker tribes, selling them on as slaves to first the Spanish and then the Mexican settlers. These same Spanish, Mexican and later American settlers also lost thousands of captives to the Comanche who took them into their society; schooling them, indoctrinating and integrating them into the Comanche family. Such was the fate of a young Eli McCullough, the first half of whom’s story was brought to us in season one of THE SON (taken from Philip Meyer’s best-selling and Pulitzer-Prize finalist novel of the same name). Season Two of THE SON concludes the journey of the iconic “First Son of Texas”. Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) will stop at nothing to secure his legacy against the backdrop of the nascent oil industry of the early 20th century. His tools are

deceit, fraud, force and murder - weapons he wields with the effortless skill of the Comanche warrior he once was. The biggest challenge he faces however, will be quelling a civil war under his own roof, triggered by his idealistic son Pete who was raised in a kinder world. Eli knows the ultimate prize of American Dynasty is almost within his grasp, but time is running out. Meanwhile in 1851, our young Eli is now married and a respected warrior amongst the Comanches, but tragedy forces him into leadership as the vast Comanche empire begins to crumble around him... Rated MA15+ for “strong themes and violence”, THE SON is a magnificent, epic tale that will bind you until its stunning conclusion. THE SON, gonna watch it again... Loved it!

Pride in Your Town Recently a friend lent me a page of the Morning Bulletin dated 7 June 1950. It was very fragile and brown, and well-read but still quite legible. It was a full coverage of the first Back to Mount Morgan week from June 3 to the June 10 in 1950. It took four pages of the Bulletin for full coverage with outstanding articles. We will try to cover as much as possible of that week and bring back memories to many. HEADLINES - Big Week of Celebrations now well under way. The Back to Mount Morgan week celebrations organized for several months by the local committee was officially launched on its due date, 3 June, and after four days is being carried on with an enthusiasm that should be maintained until the final scenes on Sunday night next. Needless to say, the visitors are entering wholeheartedly into every phase of the celebrations and they are highly appreciative of the manner in which the townspeople have set aside everything else to make them welcomed provide hospitality and entertainment.

the week and the trains on Friday and Saturday brought in big contingents. New Zealand was represented by the Beer Brothers (Walter and Albert), there was a strong delegation from Port Kembla, likewise Brisbane and Mackay where Mount Morgan colonies settled after the closedown. Mount Isa also made its contribution, in fact there were few Centre’s of any size that were not represented. Mount Morganites living in Rockhampton were in force. A commencement was made with the extensive programme on Saturday morning. The School of Arts was the venue of an informal gathering with refreshments provided. Everyone turned out but the renewal of friendships in the streets overshadowed all else. I n the afternoon various sporting fixtures were arranged. The bowling green was a popular rendezvous. At night a public welcome was extended to all visitors outside the School of Arts followed by free dance.

It was at night time that the full effect of the street decorations became apparent. From the Mine to the Hospital gates Morgan street was arched with flags and street lights and “Welcome:” in dazzling lights blazed everywhere. It was estimated that 4000 to 5000 people had assembled in Morgan Street by 8’oclock. The welcoming speakers were Mr. J. Carmody (Chairman of the Shire) Mr. G Mullins (Chairman of the Back to Mount Morgan Week committee and Mr. J. Clarke MLA for Fitzroy. Responses were made by Mr. T Harrup (Mount Morgan Association of Mackay) and Mr. Walter Beer (New Zealand). Mr. Beer made the speech of the night in the course of which he said that when he and his family first came to Mount Morgan, then a canvas town largely centered on Bourke’s Flat he little thought ever to see the time when there would be such a gathering as that night. Next edition we will continue with words from the bulletin of 3 June,1950. Think Clean – Be tidy.

ART SQUAD NEEDS VOTES FOR TREE COMPETITION No 7 Art Squad is a youth group that participates in the free workshops and events run by Mount Morgan No7 Gallery. Over the last couple of weeks, they have been creating Christmas decorations made from recycled materials, alongside the regular workshops. These were used to decorate a tyre Christmas tree, in a Rockhampton Regional Council competition. On Saturday, 16 November, some of the No. 7 Art Squad members met at the Gallery, before setting out to Rockhampton to the Lakes Creek Road Waste Management Facility where the tyre trees awaited. Once there, after a short induction, they were let loose with spray cans, glue guns and drills to bring their chosen tree to life. During planning sessions, the design settled upon was a Polar Express idea, so a village made from soft drink bottles was erected, with dowel offcut elves and Santa, and a tin can train. Between paint drying, the kids were enthralled by watching some of the compactors dealing with our everyday trash, loving the noise and mechanical aspect of it all. Upon completion of their tree, everyone jumped back on the bus to head back up to Mount Morgan, with a well-earned lunch stop at Hungry Jacks. The completed trees are being displayed in East Street shop windows for public viewing, where people can vote for their favorite by placing their choice in the voting barrel before close of business Friday, 6 December.

MOUNT MORGAN

POLICE NEWS

Christmas is fast approaching and for the Queensland Police that means the silly season is almost upon us. The Mount Morgan Police would like to remind our community to take it easy this festive season, especially with the heat. Please ensure you are consuming alcohol in moderation along with water and if you plan to drink, plan NOT to drive. It would be a shame to start the new year without your driver’s licence. We have still seen a steady stream of property crime occurring around the area. Please ensure all of your valuables are locked and secured. If you see anything suspicious then please let us know. School holidays are also fast approaching so please ensure you have activities planned for your children, so they do not get bored. Please also ensure your children are aware of the road rules regarding scooters. We have had a few dare devils scootering up and down the main streets and we do not want to have any accidents. There are a few events occurring around the town leading up to Christmas and I encourage all of you to come along and be involved in your community. The Mount Morgan Police would like to wish everyone in our great community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sgt. Matt HARLING

Officer in Charge Mount Morgan Police Station

People can place one vote per day, so we need as many folks to support their efforts as possible. The winner is to be announced Saturday, 7 December at the CBD Christmas Fair. Let’s get behind our local kids and give them a well deserved chance at getting over the line. Submitted by Kirra Swain

MOUNT MORGAN KINDY NEWS We have had various fun adventures at the local library recently. We attended Story Time focusing on ‘Pigs’ which fitted in well with the special visit from the libraries feral stuffed pig ‘Boris’ They explained to the children he was killed because he was destroying the land. We also attended a sustainability session to make Bug Houses. The children carefully placed sticks and bark into containers then tied them up with string. We enjoyed the activity and couldn’t wait to take home the finished products to our families. Thanks for fun times! Kath. Hippy invited us to celebrate Children’s week festivities, which was held at the Green Shed. The children had a wonderful time engaging with community groups, completing various activities including- little seed gardens, marble painting and stuffed snakes. Thanks muchly Hippy! We joined Hippy Australia for their end of the term outing to the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens for the Hippy goes Wild Adventure

Tour. We travelled down to the Zoo in a Youngs Bus with the Hippy Families. We all followed our map and discovered different animals looking to see their different features – feather, fur etc. We then had a yummy sausage sizzle. A wonderful day was had by all. Thanks again Hippy. Halloween Party Time Happy Halloween the children had a fantastic day coming dressed up in their favourite character. We played some fun sensory games, had a dance party and of course jumped on Lisa, the jumping castle. Thanks, so much for the family’s participation to make it fun for the children, e.g. there were comments for the School Kids saying they remember the year they were at kindy to celebrate Halloween; it was so much fun!! Sun Smart. We have just received a SUN SMART sign to display at Kindy to show how we follow the Cancer Council Guidelines. We also sell appropriate shirts and hats to the children to help keep them safe along with sun cream and shade.
