History & Reflections

Barometer

Pride in your Town

A school leaver thinking of her future was inclined to go nursing, so she met a nurse and asked her this question. How much do you make? This was the nurse’s reply: HOW MUCH DO I MAKE? I can make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you are scared. I can make your Father survive By Graeme Meade a heart attack. I can make myself get up at 5am to make sure your Mother has Thanks to the gentleman that dropped this item the medicine she needs to live. I can make your little sister breathe into the shop. I’m sorry, I was a bit “flustered” when she stops. at the time and I cannot remember who he was. I work all day to save the lives of strangers. I make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. I make myself skip lunch so that I can make sure everything I did for your Mum today is charted. I make myself work weekends and holidays because people don’t just get sick Monday to Friday. I may save your life. How much do I make? All I know is “I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.” How true is that? With Christmas upon us when all families try to get together, this lovely poem seems to fit in beautifully. Grandma. It seems that Grandmas always need a little one to hold; To kiss and love, with all their hearts, to shelter from the cold. It gives me so much pleasure when you sit upon my knee. To know as I grow older you will always keep me company. I’ll tell you lots of stories, I’ll sing you lullabies. And you will know I love you more with each beautiful day that goes by. I used to hold your mummy and hug and kiss her too I love her very much you know the same way she loves you. I used to wish that she could stay my baby all her life But God intended for my little girl to grow up to be a mummy and a wife. And that’s why He makes grandchildren – to fill the empty gap. It would be such a lonely world without you. Come sit on Grandma’s lap. With these few words Pride in Your Town members would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and a Joyous New Year that starts with prosperity and good health for young and old. Of course, Think clean = Be Tidy.

I believe the item is a Stick Barometer; possibly a Ships Barometer. Unfortunately this one is not complete, with a few missing and broken parts. Complete pieces that are mounted to good quality board and are quite valuable. With older items condition is everything. This Barometer was made by a company called Griffin and Tatlock Ltd. who were based in London. This company was incorporated in August 1889 and dissolved in March 1999. It’s hard for me to date this, mainly because I have never seen one before. I estimate it possibly late 1800’s to early 1900’s. A friend I conferred with thinks it’s a brewer’s hydrometer. I’m unsure on this. The piece stands about 90cm tall and has something missing from the middle. This was probably where the thermometer sat. At the top there is a glass tube that seems to move up and down. It is broken but there is still some pieces there. The top has a movable dial with numbers 27 - 32 printed on the right side. Round Barometers have the same numbers around them to tell the change in barometric pressure. The tube at the bottom looks like a gimbal, so it moves independently. This is one of the reasons I think it could have been in a ship. It’s the last issue for the year, thanks for your support and feedback during the year. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a successful 2018.

Primary School News Mount Morgan Central State Primary School held their Awards Ceremony for students from Prep to Grade Six on Wednesday the 6th December 2017. This was followed by a graduation ceremony for grade six students, at the Dee Bowls Club that evening. Kathy Griffiths (pictured) presented the academic achievement awards to the students in recognition of their achievements throughout the year, on behalf of the Cutter Social Club in association with the Grand Hotel. The Club has been very generous with their donations again recently, with amounts of $50 donated to the High School and Primary School Awards Ceremonies. They also kindly donated $500 to the Rural Fire Brigade for new equipment. The Club would like to thank everyone for their support through out the year.

Mount Morgan Primary School Farewells Retirees

The end of School Year was also tinged with sadness when three much loved and wonderful ladies retired from their positions at Central State Primary School. Marilyn Petersen, Lois Peacock and Christine Schluter (pictured left: L-R) were presented with beautiful bouquets and momentos in recognition of their many years of service to the school family and the wider community. They will be sadly missed and we wish them all, good health and all the best for their retirement.

Christmas Tree Festival

Mount Morgan’s School of Arts was filled with all things Christmas on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December 2017, for the 15th Annual Christmas Tree Festival. From the sweet sounds of voices singing Christmas carols, twinkling lights, tinsel, glittering Christmas trees, children filled with wonder and excitement as Santa arrived, to tables laden with goodies to suit everyone. Hundreds of people attended the event on both nights, to gaze upon the beautiful and innovative Christmas trees that were on display, courtesy of businesses, community groups, clubs and individuals. Attendees voted for their favourite trees. Nifty Thrifty and Central State School Year 1 each won a $25 voucher to spend at IGA. MMPAD provided free amusement rides for the young ones, who were kept refreshed with cold watermelon kindly provided by our Trainee, Samantha.

Entertainment was varied and kept the audience glued to their seats and toes a tapping. A big thank you goes out to all the talented artists who donated their time on the night including: Di Coburn, Dennis Johnson, Sing Australia, Lynette Anstey, Don & Denise Barnett & Roy Aitchison, Peter & Suzie Camm & Mark Hamilton, Trish & Greg Mathers. Special mention must be made of the professional performance by the everpopular Red Frog Learning Centre Children. For those chasing a last minute Christmas gift there was an abundance to choose from with cooking, plants, clothing, handicraft, embroidery, souvenirs and preserves all on offer from the stallholders. Sales of burgers, sausages on bread and softdrinks were constant and after two nights, the volunteers cooking and serving decided not to give up their day jobs! Thank you to everyone who assisted in any way to make the Christmas Tree Festival so successful, including: Santa, the Mount Morgan Fire Brigade, all the volunteers and members who helped set up, decorate and clean up, those who assisted with raffle ticket sales, cooking and serving food, those who donated prizes, the stall holders, the performers, those who entered trees and everyone who attended the event.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT Property security tips

Since October 2017 Mount Morgan Police have engaged in a Lock it or lose it initiative where evening foot patrols are conducted in selected streets targeting households highlighting security issues via a checklist with feedback left at the residence. Although this action was welcomed by residents it was concerning to officers that some residents are leaving their vehicles unlocked, some with valuables inside including keys to the vehicle. Not only does this practice leave the resident vulnerable to theft, but it is also an offence not to properly secure your vehicle. There are a number of measures people can adopt to protect their property: • Make locking external doors and windows a habit, even when you are in your premises or out in the yard. Those who occupy multi-story dwellings should be aware that offenders can gain access by climbing balconies. • Ensure any doors or windows left open for ventilation during the summer months have the necessary security devices fitted. • Objectively view your premises and conduct a basic security survey. Identify vulnerable areas and increase security where necessary. • Take an inventory for all items of value including electrical goods, recording their brand, colour, model and serial number. • Photograph your valuables and size jewelry against a ruler or match box to assist in determining size • To deter thieves, engrave or mark your property with a code made up of your initials, your date of birth as six digits and Q for Queensland. Police can record this code on their computer system to assist in property recovery. • Install security sensor lights and fit appropriate locks especially to those doors or windows hidden from public view. • Place items such as cash, wallets, laptops and mobile phones out of sight, as these can be easily targeted, quick to remove and dispose of by offenders. • Make sure tools and ladders are kept in a secure place – offenders often use garden equipment and wheelie bins to break into premises. • Car owners should ensure their vehicle is always locked and secured, even at home, with any valuables such as GPS placed out of sight. Additional information can be located at the Queensland Police Service web site www.police.qld.gov.au, then look under ‘programs’ and ‘Community Safety and Crime Prevention’. Carbine Resources Mount Morgan Gold Copper Project

Carbine would like to thank everyone who was able to attend the recent Project Community Information Meeting held on November 28th 2017 at the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall. The meeting was well attended by over 130 people. Carbine’s Managing Director Tony James gave a presentation on the company’s tailings retreatment plans to produce gold, copper and pyrite at the former Mount Morgan mine. Pictured above: Carbine Managing Director Tony James addressing the Mount Morgan Project benefits include a significant contribution to the environmental cleanup of the former mine site, along with local employment, and business opportunity and tourism benefits. Mr James discussed the milestone project’s achievements for the year; including project heritage approval, Regional Development Interests approval, securing a pyrite off take agreement with Chinese trading company Iking International Limited, and the successful completion of detailed engineering design for the process plant including the operation of a laboratory scale demonstration plant. Trial smelter slag testing was also completed last month. Mr James explained that tasks yet to be completed before the project can commence are approval of an Environmental Authority Amendment from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, and the completion of project financing. He said that project permits had taken longer than expected because of the complexity of the site jointly managed by Carbine and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) but both DNRM and Carbine have worked through the complexity and are looking forward to seeing the project succeed.

community.

Mr James also addressed the concerns of some residents who live along the proposed pyrite haulage route from the mine site to Gladstone reinforcing that road transport classification, environmental classification and laboratory toxicity and reactivity testing of the pyrite concentrate confirms that trucked pyrite concentrate is not toxic to human health. It will be transported in accordance with Carbine’s permit conditions. It was unfortunate that some residents had an anonymous flyer placed in their letterbox ahead of the community meeting suggesting otherwise. Carbine is thankful for the strong community support expressed at the meeting and remains committed to delivering the project and the opportunities it will present for the Mount Morgan community. Carbine would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Festive Season. Pictured below: Pyrite and Quartz along the Burnett Highway entering Mount Morgan

On Friday the 1st December 2017, Mount Morgan Schools were the recipients of generous donations from the Rotary Clubs of Mount Morgan and Rockhampton South. President of the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, Helen Jessop was delighted to hand over a cheque for $250 to the Primary School on behalf of the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, followed by a cheque for $6,003.00 to Mount Morgan High from Mount Morgan and Rockhampton South Rotary. “The Mount Morgan High School staff would like to acknowledge and thank the Mount Morgan and Rockhampton South Rotary Clubs for their very kind contribution to our school. Their generous contribution will enable our Year 10 students to attend the North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre (NKIEEC) camp next year (2018). The North Keppel camp is an extra curriculum experience which involves 5 days and 4 nights on an island with 6 meals a day, positive well being activities from raft building, canoeing, snorkelling, hiking, plankton trawling and fishing. It involves team building trust activities and positive goal setting. Further goals for NKIEEC are listed below: • To promote personal goal setting • Extend connections to develop capabilities/values to be an active and responsible citizen. • To develop positive well-being strategies • To engage in meaningful hands on tasks • To find purpose in education • Develop skills for promoting team trust • Provide opportunities in a safe environment to self-regulate • Orchestrate skills for working together in problem solving situations • To increase resilience and self esteem We are hoping the camp will be something they can strive towards and at the same time provide them with a purposeful goal to keep them engaged in their first term of learning in 2018. We are ecstatic Rotary Club Mount Morgan and Rockhampton South are helping to fund the extra amount needed for students to engage in this camp at NKIEEC.” Raelene Robinson

What’s been happening at Blue Care Christmas parties are filled with laughter, music, great food and fellowship. The Blue Care Christmas Party on Saturday the 2nd December, certainly provided all of those things for those who attended the get-together. The party was tinged with sadness however as the group also said farewell to volunteers and great friends Marie and Dennis Johnson (pictured right with Daphne Kennedy), who have been so much a part of Blue Care and in fact the Mount Morgan Community. Special guests from Yeppoon and Rockhampton also joined the local auxiliary members, and local volunteers and their families. President Daphne Kennedy thanked everyone for their hard work throughout the year.

DEBBIE ROBERTSON SINGING THE GOLDEN HITS OF YESTERDAY – TRIBUTE SHOWS

WESTWORLD

In 1990 author extraordinaire Michael Crichton penned a world-beating blockbuster book (made into the movie in 1993 by Steven Spielberg) about a theme park where the attractions went berserk and began killing the patrons. That, if you hadn’t guessed was JURASSIC PARK. Exactly twenty years earlier, in 1973, the same author Michael Crichton wrote and directed a film about a theme park where the attractions went berserk and began killing the patrons. It starred Yul Brynner and Josh Brolin’s dad James, and the movie swept the world by storm. WESTWORLD was a major hit. Now, twenty-three years after JURASSIC PARK and forty-three after WESTWORLD THE MOVIE (am I making you feel your years?), comes a new world-wide smash hit, inspired by its predecessor, WESTWORLD the Series from HBO. With an awesome cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Luke Hemsworth, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Clifton Collins Jr and many more, WESTWORLD is a technologically advanced, Western theme park populated by synthetic androids or “Hosts” who cater to high-paying visitors. The patrons flock to WESTWORLD from their own sanitised existence, to live for a time in a place where every human appetite, no matter how noble, no matter how depraved can be indulged without consequence. WESTWORLD makes its guests feel alive... As an observer, a participant, a lover, a killer or even as a prisoner... Never before have they been this aware... This is alive! Indulge yourself... Visit WESTWORLD... Loved it!

Carols in Saint Mary’s Mount Morgan

11.11.

The threat of recent heavy rain and the gathering storm clouds didn’t deter those eager to start the Advent Season with Carols in Saint Mary’s Church on Saturday 2nd December. Residents and visitors gathered in the Church Hall at 5pm for light refreshments followed by the Carol Service at 6pm. Guests, Di Coburn and the Bouldercombe Singers sang beautifully and Father Paul Gribble from Rockhampton gave the Christmas Address.

“I would like to thank all those who braved the weather to attend, our artists and the Uniting Church, Sacred Heart, and St. Mary’s members for their assistance. It was a lovely evening of Pictured above: Two of the members of the Bouldercombe fellowship”, Lay Minister Keith Hare said. Singers.

Happy 90th Birthday Nell Shaw Local Mount Morgan resident Nell Shaw (pictured left) cuts her 90th birthday cake at the Slim Trims Christmas Party which was held recently. Nell celebrates her birthday on the 31st December and has already had two birthday cakes to cut, over the past month! This cake featured a purple teddy bear which was most appropriate as Nell is quite famous for her ‘bear’ production skills, and has given many of her creations to various friends over the years. When asked what was her secret to a long life Nell replied, “ Keep the grey turning over and get out and about.” She added, “ I’m lucky I have good health, good family and friends and I can still live in my own home”. We wish you many more Happy Birthday’s Nell!

Smiles all round for Mount Morgan Bakery’s 1st Birthday

How time flies, especially when you’re knee deep in dough! Terri, Rod and Darren O’Brien of Mount Morgan Bakery can’t believe they’ve just celebrated their 1st birthday. At 11am on Sunday the 10th December 2017, the delicious birthday cake was cut by Terri, and MMPAD Project Officer Rhonda Ramm drew out the winning ticket for the $100 Scratchy Tree. Customers who spent $10 and over at the Bakery were in the draw to win, and Peter Peck (Pedro) was the name on the winning receipt. Good luck with your scratching and we hope that you strike gold! “We’d like to thank all our customers for their support over the past twelve months. The locals, the many tourists and visitors to our town who’ve left some great comments on our ‘WALL’.” Terri said. “We’ve some great new products coming in 2018, so watch this space.” “Merry Christmas to all our customers and a Happy and Safe New Year from all at Mount Morgan Bakery”. DNRM Stakeholders Meeting

Three MMPAD executive members attended the Abandoned Mines Unit of the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines Stakeholders Meeting on the 7th December 2017. The meeting was part of the Abandoned Mines Unit’s ongoing commitment to keep stakeholders informed on the status of Mount Morgan Mine site and the Dee River. Other stakeholders present included representatives from Qld Government, DNRM, Rockhampton Regional Council, Carbine Resources and the Wowan /Dululu Land Care Group. Andrew Grabski Programme Director from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines gave a presentation, which included a review of the history of the mine. Dr Wayne Boyde, Manager, Abandoned Mines Unit Central Region, then spoke in detail regarding some of their objectives for the site, which include plans about public safety, improving the water quality, water monitoring, the lime dosing water treatment plant and the evaporator system. He spoke about the No 8 Dam which is a fresh water dam on the mine site; this water is used in the lime dosing plant. Work has been completed and is ongoing to stop fresh water flowing into the mine pit during rain events. They also have sumps which pump contaminated water back into the pit during rain, this stops this contaminated water flowing into the Dee River which as a result the Dee River water quality has continued to improve steadily over the past 10 years. Quality samples are taken at key locations down the length of the Dee River, into the Don River as far as Duaringa, which is 140km downstream of Mount Morgan as part of the monitoring process management plan. There is a contingency plan in place for rain events; this is done by email and SMS, to notify downstream stakeholders about planned water releases during rain events. Future works around the mine site include upgrades to the onsite seepage and the water treatment plant, electrical assessments, heritage work, maintaining firebreaks, vegetation and road maintenance. Russell Dann, Project Specialist from Carbine Resources then presented an update on Carbine’s Gold Copper Mine Project, (See page 6, this edition for details). The Story Behind Kent Murray’s Bike

19.

(Courtesy of Gayle Vardy & Greame Meade)

I have been riding bikes most of my life, track racing as a kid; I was involved in the early Triathlon movement, and club racing as a veteren. I have a modest bicycle collection, so I always like it when an old bike turns up, even if it’s not mine. Kent Murray and Col Vardy (pictured left) have been friends for a long time. One day Kent saw an old bike in Col’s shed, Col told him he could not have it as it belonged to a very good friend of his called Ted. Following is the story written by Gayle Vardy about “Ted’s Bike”. In 1928, after the big flood, Dululu erected its first pub in Central Queensland. It was a low set building surrounded by a veranda, established by Joseph McMullen, however the licensee was Mrs A. D. Dodge (Dolly). Her father had been the licensee of the Royal Hotel Roma. Dolly and son Edward (Ted) had been employees of Joe McMullen’s Bakery in Wowan. Dolly Dodge was a tireless worker and she had a son to raise as her husband had abandoned her in 1914 and returned to England. In 1932 Dolly purchased a block of land near Dululu so they could establish a dairy. Ted would ride his trusty bicycle to the neighbouring dairy of Mrs A D Peacock where her daughters taught Ted all about milking cows. Ted also rode his bike to jobs such as “Well Sinking” and “Cementing” of the Dululu Bridge pylons, and to attend dances in the hall and to play tennis and/or Cricket on the town “Reserve”. Thankfully Dolly and Ted had the income from the dairy as they lost almost everything, bar their lives, when a fire destroyed the hotel on the 31st July 1934. The next hotel in Wowan was established by James and Sophie Duthie in 1935. Their son Leslie became the well-known owner of “Duthie’s Leichhardt Hotel” Rockhampton. Meanwhile “Ted’s Bike” survived the fire; however it was retired to the shed in 1939 when Ted acquired his first car. The bike was only ridden over the years by Ted’s nephews on school holidays. Ted was a resident of Dululu for 88 years, he had a remarkable memory and lived by the rule – waste not – want not. Colin and Gayle Vardy and boys arrived in the area in 1978 and became firm friends of Ted and his wife Dot. Over the years there relationship grew and they became like family. Sadly Dot passed away in 1995, aged 80, and Ted in 2010, aged 96. Col could not dispose of Ted’s beloved bike so it was once again returned to a shed. Col has given the bike to his friend Kent who has promised to preserve the bike and its history. After a while Col thought what is the point of hanging on to this bike? It’s sad to see it wasting away. He spoke to Kent about it, Kent made a commitment to preserve it and to ride it, and so after many years the bike has moved from Dululu to Rockhampton. Who made this bike, we do not know. There were bicycle manufactures around Central Queensland in the 1920s. Some blacksmiths turned their hand to making bikes as well. One day we may find out. Kent’s mate Jacko gave Ted’s bike a good clean and a service; the only thing they replaced was the tyres and tubes and put some padding on the seat. I help organise bike rides around Rockhampton for a face book group called “Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society”. Last month the ride was called “Gentlefolk go to Church” we visited some of Rockhampton’s historic churches. We had a special event before we set off, Col and Gayle Vardy came down from Dululu and we did a hand over of Ted’s bike to Kent, the new custodian. It was a really touching moment to see almost 100 years of history passed on to keep going for another 100 years. Col pushed the bike off and Kent completed the ride on it. It’s good to see another old bike join the ranks of the “Gentlefolk rides”.
