Local Photographer Wins Shutter Bug Competition

Rockhampton Regional Council’s recent Nature Photography Competition provided a wonderful opportunity for photographers across the region to strut their stuff photography wise. The competition was to celebrate World Environment Day 2018. Councillor Drew Wickerson said “The entries submitted were outstanding to say the least and it’s been a pleasure to see locals get behind this competition, get behind their lens, and share the stunning results with us.”

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video

THREE BILLBOARDS plays deliciously like a Coen Brothers movie, and that’s not by accident as the lead is played by Mrs Joel Coen, sister-in-law to Ethan (Frances McDormand), and the writer, director, producer Mr Martin McDonagh ( IN BRUGES, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, SIX SHOOTER, THE GUARD) is a long-time friend, ally and collaborator of the Coen Brothers. English-born Martin McDonagh was inspired by real events to write THREE BILLBOARDS. In the early nineties he was travelling across and experiencing the USA by Greyhound when, somewhere in Alabama or Georgia he thought, he passed and read three giant billboards with messages similar to those in this film plastered in giant letters for all to see.

Claudia Brooks (pictured above left with Councillor Drew Wickerson) made Mount Morgan proud when she was awarded Grand Champion in the Junior Photography Section of the Competition. Her picturesque landscape image “Green Bushland” was on display at the Rockhampton Art Gallery throughout June. Seventeen year old Claudia graduated from Mount Morgan State High School in 2017 and is currently studying full time at Central Queensland University Rockhampton. Claudia has been a familiar figure behind the camera at High School occasions and is quite often seen with her faithful and willing four-legged friend off on the pursuit of all photographers dream; the award winning illusive photograph. To contact Claudia and discuss your photographic requirements, please phone her on 0484354175.

After THREE BILLBOARDS was released, the man responsible for those real billboards put his hand up. It turned out to be a James Fulton of Vidor, not in Georgia or Alabama, but Texas- and these billboards are still there today, nearly thirty years later. Frances McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Mildred in THREE BILLBOARDS, and possibly for the first time two performers from the same film were nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. Sam took out that honour and to be honest, although all of them including Peter Dinklage were absolutely terrific, Sam stole the show in our opinion. He had us on the edge of our seats one minute with his meanness and menace, and laughing uproariously the next with his exquisite display of dumb. Can’t say too much about the story without giving it away, but suffice to say that Mildred Hayes of Ebbing, Missouri is not happy and nor is she satisfied with the performance and results of some members of her community, so she hires three billboards outside of town to send them a very blunt, extremely direct message. This sparks a disruptive chain of events and a series of unintended and unforeseen consequences that leaves no one in Ebbing unaffected. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is rated MA15+ for “strong themes, violence and coarse language”, and runs for just under two hours.

Claudia Brooks 2018

An absolutely unmissable film! THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI... Loved it!

CQ Crane Hire Gold Rush Hill Sprint

3.

On the 14th July 2018 the Central Queensland Motor Sports Club (CQMSC) will hold the first ever Motorsport event up the Mount Morgan range. ‘The CQ Crane Hire Gold Rush Hill Sprint’. The track; 2 kilometres and 24 turns up a 160-metre incline! 100 drivers, from over 140 who nominated have been invited to be a part of this unique inaugural event, Australia’s longest hill race. Securing the closing of the public road for this event has taken about 2 passionate years of persistence to achieve. Transforming the road into an approved race track will happen on Friday 13th July, The Burnett Highway will be closed at Poison Creek junction and also at Struck Oil turnoff from 12 Midnight Thursday 12th July and reopen Midnight Saturday 14th July. With full support from Member of Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke, Rockhampton Region Council, Transport and Main Roads and Qld Police, this unique race track has come to life. The CQ Crane Hire Gold Rush Hill Sprint has the makings of becoming an iconic race meet that will only grow in stature in the Australian motor racing calendar. Motor Sport does matter. The benefits this will bring to the whole local economy will be far greater than just the one or (later) 2 days it is being held. “Like Bathurst the Mount Morgan range will become a year-round magnet for the huge group of people called motoring enthusiasts. More people will visit the region, stay in the region and spend in the region. When they hear about the race they’ll be attracted by the story of the road to the once richest gold mine in the world and the region around it.” Club President Craig Jervis said. Advance Rockhampton, along with Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. will be promoting this event to our Region and in particular our town of Mount Morgan as a place to visit, stay and spend for the event. So stay tuned for updates as they become available on facebook and in the next issue of the Mount Morgan Argus.

Kick off for Cancer Council by

Wayne Alden

On Saturday June 16th 2018 he Mount Morgan Rugby Union Club hosted its first ever charity day event, proudly supporting Cancer Council Queensland. The principle fundraiser of the day was the auction of special pink jerseys. The purchase of these jerseys was only possible due to the support of the day’s principle sponsor, Craig Friend Contracting Plasterers and our other jerseys sponsors Mane Street Hair Studio – Hair by Kodie and Postcard Perfect Photography. The jersey auction was more successful than any of us could have hoped, raising over $3,000 for this great cause, together with donations and raffles from the day and Mt Morgan Rugby Union Club’s own donation, the amount that will be given to Cancer Council Queensland is an incredible $5000. There were also a number of local businesses who supported the day with the donation of goods and prizes: Mitre 10, IGA, Mt Morgan Bakery, The Grand Hotel and The Golden Nugget Hotel. Members of the Mt Morgan Golf Club also volunteered their time to fill a number of vital roles on the day. There was also some great rugby played on the day, three junior games with teams from Rockhampton, Biloela and Emerald and in the main game, Mt Morgan had a convincing win over Colts by 45 points to Nil.

Pride in Your Town

Continuing on with interesting bits from the old Morning Bulletin papers, it was in 1865 that Gold was found at Crocodile Creek (Bouldercombe) only 20 Kms from Rockhampton. Police Magistrate Wiseman reported about 100 diggers were finding gold and the numbers increased daily. 1866. The Rockhampton Benevolent Society was formed on August 1st by a committee of ladies assisted by the clergy and medical men. Also an ornate two storey brick building with decorative wooden verandas replaced the previous makeshift wooden post office. From 1866 for the next two years at least several hundred South Sea Islanders came to work on Central Queensland cane plantations and pastoral proprieties. 1867. From September a daily passenger and goods train began running on the line between Rockhampton and Westwood. A first class passenger return ticket was 15 shillings, a second class return 11 shillings and sixpence. The charge for wool freight was 2 shillings and sixpence a bale. Residents of Rockhampton signed a petition asking the surveyor-general to mark out a seaside town at the nearest point on the coast. Yeppoon (then known as Bald Hills) was proclaimed a town reserve on the following year on April 30 but for many years access to it was difficult. 1868. When a Rockhampton rate payer complained about the goats, The Bulletin of May 6 agreed that the troublesome quadrupeds were “dancing Capricorn hornpipes on every available veranda – and some people think the Council are in league with the goats in order to divert the attention of the ratepayers to the goats.” Many families kept milking goats which grazed on the town common or on vacant land, but the population exploded and became a nuisance in town streets and gardens. Walter Ballantyne Reid (1834-1910) the well-known merchant in Rockhampton was described as a shrewd businessman. Reid, the founder of Rockhampton’s premier mercantile house, Walter Reid and Co., moved from his shop in East Street to new premises in Quay Street in 1868, where he began to specialize as a wholesaler, trading in wine, spirits and general merchandise. 1869. The Suez Canal was opened, joining the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The Bulletin in January called for an ssay office and technical education in Rockhampton. “It rather astonishes that in a town like this, the centre of an extensive mining district; there are no appliances for determining the nature of the various mineral products which are known to abound in a wide radius round us. The town had to wait another 35 years before a School of Mines in Rockhampton offered classes from 1904-06; followed in 1915 by the new Technical College. We hope you are reading these small items of history in our region and enjoying them. More next edition. Think clean – Be tidy.

by Catherine McIntosh descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan

Walter Hall ‘Although very successful with Cobb and Co.’s coaching line and in his ventures in the pastoral industry, Mr. Hall always took a keen interest in mining notwithstanding that in his early career it had brought him no favours. About thirty years after he landed in Australia he became interested in Mount Morgan. He came in when it was first taken up [in 1886], and ... was one of the largest shareholders. His connection with Mount Morgan was owing principally to his brother, the late Mr. T. S. Hall ..., and to his acquaintance with the late Mr. William Pattison’ (Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld: 1878-1954), 14 October 1911). c. 1900 / English-born Walter Russell Hall (1831-1911) / Businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist / Sydney resident / Son of a flour miller, Walter Hall (1798-1857), and Elizabeth Carleton Hall (née Skarratt) (1804-1862) / Original director and shareholder of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited (‘Old Company’) from 1886 to 1911 / Supporter of education and sport in Mount Morgan / Elder brother of the Old Company’s first chairman, Thomas Skarratt Hall (1836-1903), and first general manager, James Wesley Hall (1839-1901) / Husband of Eliza Rowdon Hall (née Kirk) (1847-1916), founder of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in 1912. Avery Scales

by Graeme Meade

I have written about scales before, but this one is different. These scales were used in the Mount Morgan Post Office until digital scales took over. The change to digital probably took place during the 1980s. There is nothing on the scales that says Mount Morgan or Post Office, but I was told by the person I bought them off that they were from there. The scales are made by W & T Avery, an English company, that was founded in 1730. In 1813 William and Thomas Avery took over this business and in 1818 renamed it W & T Avery. In 1914 it employed about 3000 employees, around this time the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company employed about 2800 men, with the town population around 13,000. It is hard to date these scales, the shape looks like an early 20 th century, but they could be newer than that. There is an assortment of weights with them, they are all gram weights. Australia converted to the metric system in 1966 so the imperial weight would have been tossed out around that time. The top of the base has “Avery” in the casting and the right side has “To Weigh 2LB”. There is a sticker on the side that reads “Sole Agents W. & T. Avery (Australia) Pty Ltd”. The tray the postage would sit on is made from copper or brass. It’s a nice piece, a bit faded, from sitting under a house for many years. If the scales had a Post Office stamp on them, they would be very sought after by collectors but it is still a popular item.
