History & Reflections

Toy Train

Pride in your Town Christmas is almost upon us and so from the writers of” Pride in Your Town” we wish you a very Happy and safe Christmas time and may 2017 be a wonderful year for everyone. We will endeavour to keep our column going in the New Year with as much local history as we can research and items we gather from the internet, and books etc. It is becoming difficult to find new subjects for these articles as we have been writing for almost 5 years now. Wow! Two little lessons to give us some thoughts and maybe we can appreciate the messages at this Christmas time. During my second month of college, our Professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and breezed through the questions until I read the last one: “What is the name of the woman who cleans the school? Surely this was some kind of a joke. I had seen the cleaning lady several times. She was tall, dark haired and in her 50’s but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “Absolutely” said the Professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people and all are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “Hello”. I have never forgotten that lesson and I also learned her name was Dorothy.

One night at 11.30 p.m. an older African American Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

Graeme Meade from Collectables & Memories East Street

In the Christmas theme these are a toy any boy in the 60s would have loved to find under his tree on Christmas morning. I have been collecting tin trains for a long time, when I started I would buy any tin train, but I was getting too many so I A young white man stopped to help decided to collect one brand, that brand is her, generally unheard of in those called Modern Toys.

conflicting days of the 1960’s. The man took her safely, helped her get assistance and put her in a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry but wrote down his address and thanked him.

Seven days went by and a knock came at the young man’s door. To his surprise a giant colour TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read; “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes but also my spirit. Then you came along. Because of you I was able to make it to my dying Husband’s bedside before he passed away. Thank you and bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.” Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.

Merry Christmas everyone, from Jean, Jennifer and Bette.

SAINT MARY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE SUNDAY 25th DECEMBER 7.30AM GORDON STREET MOUNT MORGAN Wishing everyone a Holy & Happy Christmas.

Masudaya, also known as Modern Toys, company started in Tokyo in 1924 and is probably Japans oldest toy company, specialising in tinplate toys, both battery operated and mechanical. This company really took off after the second world war. In the fifty’s they were producing lots of different tin toys including aircraft, racing cars, motorcycles, military and civilian vehicles, trains. They also made space toys including the ‘Radicon Robot’ in 1957, which is considered the first remote controlled robot. Apparently the company is still operating; I cannot find a website though. The logo to look for is a M-T inside a diamond. I don’t know how many different trains there are, I have 15 different ones, I have seen some online that I do not have. Some of the trains are easy to find, but some types are hard to find. The ‘Western’ one that’s looks like a train that you would see in Western movies, seems plentiful, the more modern looking trains from the 1970s are the hardest to find. Almost all of my trains are battery operated, some used to blow smoke, some whistle, some have bells that ring, some have drivers that nod their heads. A few of them will change the direction they travel in when they bump into something. Some of mine work, most have signs of use, rust and dents, a few are almost new, with boxes. Cheers for the festive season, I hope you all have a great Christmas and all your wishes come true…….. (They won’t!!!) So dream BIG.

Gol f Club News

On Sunday the 20th November, we held an annual event called FLOG. It was started at our club by the late Isobel Taylor, and is a dedication carried on to this day. It was created to prevent monotony of the game, and is a fun turn on the name of Golf, being that the course is played back to front, hence the name is spelt back to front, and the result is Flog. A lot of the shots resemble the name Flog also, as the unpractised course presents some definite obstacles to even the most seasoned golfer. It is a light hearted day, and enjoyed by all. This years deserving nett winner on a score of 72 was Noel French. Congratulations. Juniors Christmas Party - What a fun day was had by our Junior players on Saturday 3rd December! The weather was warm, lending itself to waterslides and wading pools for their Christmas celebrations. Santa arrived by firetruck, and handed out water pistols which resulted in more of a soaking.

After a lunch of party food, Tyson Ireland was presented with the CWA Encouragement Award for his dedication to the game. Well done Tyson, and a big thank you to the Mount Morgan CWA and our local Fire Brigade. Corporate Day - We certainly had some challenging conditions to contend with on Sunday, 4th December when we held our annual Corporate Day Competition. The haze seemed to magnify the suns rays, and golfing became very thirsty work! Most made it back unscathed though, with the Kindy Care team taking out the title, NewsXpress a close second and the “Brewsters” coming in third. Longest Drives were Shaun Arnold with a whopper for the Mens, and Melissa Lee for the Ladies. Thanks everyone for coming out! In Memoriam - On a sad note, we recently lost one of our treasured members, Wally Hall. The Mount Morgan Golf Club have introduced the Inaugural Wally Hall Memorial Tournament and Trophy, as an annual tribute. We would all like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Hall Family during this difficult time.

Thank you - A very grateful thank you to our wonderful local sponsors, The Golden Mount Festival Committee, Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop, IGA and Tom Leyden Tyre and Mechanical for your ongoing support throughout the year, and a massive shout out to all the other not for profit organisations that we have been privileged to work with in 2016. Last but certainly not least, thank you to our members and guests, who without you, clubs like ours could not survive. It is wonderful to see clubs/groups/businesses and locals, all supporting each other in our vibrant little town, and we look forward to more in 2017. Take Care everyone over the holidays, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Baree Markets Wrapped up for another year For those looking for last minutes gifts the Baree School of Arts Markets was the place to be on Saturday 17th December. There was an array of home baked delicacies, handicrafts, jewellery, preserves, plants and fruit and vegetables. There was great support from local stall holders on Saturday – the most the markets have seen to date. Winner of the wheelbarrow full of goodies was J. Bryant. “Thank you to all the locals and visitors that have supported markets throughout the yearwe couldn’t continue without this,” said Pam Alden , “Many thanks also to all the volunteers who’ve assisted our last markets for the year. “ The Baree School of Arts Markets will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month commencing in February.

Chris tmas T ree Festival

Nothing could dampen the spirits of the crowd that turned out to the Annual Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival on the 9th and 10th December. Not even the downpour on the Saturday evening! From the moment the doors to the School of Arts Hall opened at 5.30pm a steady stream of eager adults and children arrived to take in the dazzling display of traditional and innovative Christmas Trees.

“The look of wonder on the little one’s faces was a delight to see and it certainly makes all the time and effort worthwhile” event coordinator Rhonda Ramm said. “It’s amazing the care and creativity everyone has put into achieving such a wonderful display of trees”.

Nifty Thrifty’s Winning Entry Local Businesses, Community Groups, Emergency Services, Schools and individuals showed their support for the event with approximately 80 trees on display during the two nights. There was certainly no shortage of things to do as free rides were on offer for the children and Santa paid a visit courtesy of the Mount Morgan Fire Service fire engine. For those eager to purchase Christmas gifts there was an abundance of choice available from the various market stalls. Everything from plants, freshly baked plum puddings and Christmas cakes and preserves to ornaments, jewellery and hand crafts was on sale. Food was a plenty and the volunteers on the BBQ found it a full-time job catering to the constant call for more steak burgers and sausages.

The evening was complimented with the varied and talented entertainment on offer. Di Coburn compered the proceedings and she along with Denis Johnson & Brian Zemek, Peter Camm & Mark and the Fab 4 kept the audience glued to their seats.

President of MMPAD, John Steinberger said. “Thank you to all who submitted trees, attended the event and donated prizes for raffles. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and assisted us in any way to make the Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival the success it was. Thank you also to the High School for assisting with the decorations, the Fire Brigade, Santa and helpers, Di Coburn and all the entertainers.” Mount Morgan Golf Club’s Winning Entry

MMPAD would like to thank the Leichhardt Hotel and the Grand Hotel for their donations for prizes. Thank you to Ken O’Dowd MP for his $50 donation and a big thank you to Member for Mirani Jimmy Pearce for his generous donations of $500. Those who attended the event voted Mount Morgan Golf Club and Nifty Thrifty the winners of the Christmas Tree Display. The MMPAD Christmas Hamper was won by Ruth Allen with ticket number (white S35) and the scotch and rum raffle was won by Elaine Delandelles (apricot ticket M14). From all at MMPAD a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year to everyone.

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video

As hard as it is to believe, WAR DOGS is conclusive proof that truth if often stranger than fiction. “I love Dick Cheney’s America!” screams Jonah as the helicopter gunship swoops in above their heads like a mother hen protecting her chicks from certain death.

Sometimes an animal comes into care that is just so cute that it is very hard not to fuss over it. Such was the case with this adorable little Boobook owl. Poor little fellow was smothered in lice, it took about 8 doses of lice and mite spray to get rid of them. Lice are a real problem with birds, as they can make them anaemic. Boobook owls are mostly known for their ‘mopoke, mopoke’ call. They are raptors, and as such hunt for mice and small rodents, young chicks and small mammals. They have talons, as do all raptors., and this can make them dangerous to handle. If ever you find an injured raptor you must be very wary of the talons, more so than the beak. The talons actually lock so they can fly with prey they have caught without dropping it., and this means if they latch onto you they will not readily let go! The safest way to rescue them is to put a stick or towel on their feet so they can latch onto that. Once the talons are secure you can carefully cover them with a thick towel or similar, making sure you are aware of the beak.

Jonah and Miles are two guys with history. They were best buddies in high school, enjoying many adventures, conquests and failures together, always having each other’s backs. Miles’ parents did not approve of Jonah however, and over the years the boys lost touch. Miles is now stuck in a job where he feels used and abused, but at least it pays the bills. The future though does not look good...And he’s only in his early twenties. Then Jonah comes back to Miami Beach and he has acquired unusual knowledge and skills that could be very useful during this time of war in Iraq. The two friends reunite and begin to exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on US military contracts. Starting small (“I can live and grow fat on just the crumbs!”) they begin raking in seriously big money and living the high life.

But the boys are in way over their heads when they land a $300-million deal to arm the Afghan military...A deal that puts them in business with some very shady, powerful and The reason we must not fuss over the little cutie is that he, dangerous people-including the U.S. Government. as a hand-raised baby, must not see humans as friends, nor a food source. If a raptor landed on your head or your Frankly, they’ll be lucky to get out of this alive... arm, you could be in real trouble! To care for Raptors you must have a special licence, issued by Parks and Wildlife, We all remember...This was a crazy time filled with crazy which I have. We must have as little contact as possible people waging a crazy war. Remember the stacks of containers with the babies, and may even have to wear a disguise! piled up in the desert, all filed to overflowing with pallets of plastic-wrapped American currency? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Greg and WAR DOGS is funny, intense and scary with edge-of-the-seat Trish. tension, great action and hilarious sequences. It stars Jonah Hill, Brad Cooper, Ana De Armas and Miles Teller, it runs for 1 hour 50 minutes and it’s rated M for violence, language, druguse and sexual references. WAR DOGS is a true story...AMAZING...Loved it!

Happy 90th Birthday Gladys Wooler

In Mick’s Memory Submitted by Karin Blake

Glazed Ham Recipe Plum jam Honey, BBQ Sauce crushed garlic salt and pepper. HAM

Friends and relatives from as far away as Mackay gathered together at the Mount Morgan dam on Sunday 18th December to celebrate the Birthday of Gladys Wooler, who turns 90 on the 22nd of December. Gladys was born in Rockhampton, where she grew up and she met Clive. They married and moved to Mount Morgan and raised 6 children. Gladys has been a resident of Mount Morgan for 70 years and has seen a lot of changes in the town. To date Gladys has 1 son, 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mix it all together in a bowl. Have your ham on a baking tray and then put the mix over the ham with the skin scored so that it would run into the ridges. Then cook this for about an hour. Every 15 minutes or so put more of the glaze over the ham until it was fully cooked. Leave ham cool a little. Just delicious. Merry Christmas to you all.

Green Thumb by Murray Hare

Tis’ the time of year when houses are filled with the sight of brightly coloured plastic trees, covered in ornaments and tinsel. While I can see the appeal of not having to water the plastic verison, I still believe that nothing can beat the smell of a fresh, living christmas tree. Any tree can be made into a christmas tree. All it requires is a little imagination. Lilly pilly’s that grow tall and upright, Casurina’s for a more beachy feel, Eucalypts for a real Australian Cristmas atmosphere or the good old trusty pine trees. Plenty of Possibilities. Personally I like the compact Lemon Scented Pine. Gives off a nice aroma and is perfect for smaller table decorations. Plus When the celebrations are over, you will have a nice plant for your gardens Merry Christmas everyone and see you all in 2017 From Murray & Family

Wishing every one a Very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year

Town Consultative Meeting-Carbine Resources Managing Director Delivers a 15 Presentation for Future Mining at Mount Morgan Tony James, Managing Director for Carbine Resources may not have been at the helm of the Western Australian mining company for long, but his presentation delivered on Wednesday night showcased the professionalism and passion of a true seasoned director. Addressing a crowd of 100 plus at the Mount Morgan School of Arts, Mr James provided an update on their hopes to reawaken the currently slumbering Mount Morgan Mine. During the town meeting, Mr James transcribed the mining company’s recently released Definitive Feasibility Study into an impressive 60 minute power point presentation - covering areas of completed works to plans for mining over the next 20 years. The company’s aim is to recommence operations at the famous Mine; not only extracting the gold and copper from the tailings but also remove the area’s pyrite. The pyrite contributes to a lot of the acid mine drainage problems on the mine site. Carbine intends to truck this product to the port of Gladstone for shipment to overseas buyers. Mr James announced that what is required now is further investment from shareholders and private loans securing enough finance for development of the gold and copper project in the construction of a processing plant. There are still areas that require approval he pointed out, including Environmental, Heritage and Regional Planning which are expected to have outcomes from applications submitted to the relevant responsible government departments in 2017. Questions were taken from the floor after the presentation, with the crowd enquiring on a wide range of topics. Questions included employment for locals, future investments and sales, commending of the project proposal to noise, dust pollution and revegetation . All were satisfactorily answered by the speaker. A special thanks was delivered to Mount Morgan Rotary for supplying a pre sausage sizzle for the event. Carbine Community Liaison Officer Russell Dann, who was also the facilitator for the evening, advised a further update will be provided to the Mount Morgan Argus in early 2017. To review a copy of the town meeting presentation held at Mount Morgan on Wednesday 14th December 2016 and further updates visit, ASX website www.asx.com.au company code CRB or company website www. carbineresources.com.au
