THE SECOND GREAT GOLD RUSH
STORY AND PHOTOS BY KEN WINTER Right: Bruce Dekker - unofficial burnout king.
CQ Crane Hire’s ‘Gold Rush Hill Sprint’, very capably organised and run by the wonderful people at the Central Queensland Motor Sporting Club (CQMSC), and now expanded to a two day event, returned over the weekend of 13 and 14 July 2019, bigger and better as promised. One hundred
competitors were invited to attend, many in fabulously exotic expensive and powerful machines, released at 30 second intervals, leaping off the line, accelerating through the narrow bottle neck at turn one, and roaring up the mountain, thrilling spectators with all the skill and daring that high
octane entertainment demands, all weekend. The 2.2 kilometre course, rising some 160 metres through 24 turns is a nerve tensing temptation that is proving extremely difficult for hill Continued on Page 2
From Page 1 sprinters to resist, as the longest and most challenging course in Australia. With highway traffic able to be diverted through razorback road without adding any distance or inconvenience to travellers, the Mount Morgan range has always held that dormant potential to become a hill sprint heaven just waiting to be exploited, and it’s wonderful to once again see that potential being realised. Three full size ‘Youngs’ coaches were employed this year, to transfer the hundreds of spectators from the collection point at Bouldercombe to the various well catered viewing positions at the event. Each fan was provided with a beautifully printed complimentary booklet listing the competitors, their cars, racing numbers, and a wealth of other information. The coaches ran continuously both days, stopping at the pit area, the start line, the lower lookout, the corporate viewing platform, and circling through Baree and razorback road to Bouldercombe again about every half hour. The organisation was impressive and ran like clockwork all weekend, despite the required complexities. Spectators were also provided with professional, informative and entertaining commentary throughout the event, but unfortunately it was barely audible at the midway lookout area of the mountain. Technical issues of resistance to current flow through the great lengths of cable stretching up the mountain meant that this viewing position had difficulty. It’s a tricky problem, but one that the organisers are determined to overcome for next year. Day one, dawning in perfect Queensland winter conditions, was as entertaining as any motorsport fan could hope for. Machines of all classes sizes
shapes and price tags, Cobras, Porsches, Lotuses, Bmw’s, screaming Fiats and Golfs, roaring V8’s, and even a thundering Pontiac Gran Prix Nascar (Wow – what a sound !), twisted and weaved up the mountain, torturing their tyres, testing their drivers, and tantalising their fans. But the cars that prove to be winners at hill sprints aren’t necessarily those with the biggest most powerful engines. They tend to be low, light and have very highly tuned small engines, sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes, and highly skilled fearless drivers. The fastest cars on the mountain proved those points again this year. King of the mountain once again, Ray Vandersee, wheeled his fabulous 2009 Skelta racer through the course to record the fastest time of the meeting, cutting an incredible five seconds off his own record last year, posting a time of 1min.25.2 secs. - A highly skilled driver in a highly capable machine, whenever challenged he seemed able to reach deeper into himself to answer and challenged he was! If Mr. Vandersee was the fastest up the hill, perhaps the sensation of the weekend was Ross Mackay’s incredibly quick little 1975 mark 1 Escort, shaving 3 seconds off last years track record and posting a time of 1 min.27.4 secs. Zetec powered, and naturally aspirated, it seemed to defy logic how it could outperform so many more powerful and turbocharged entries, being the second fastest car on the mountain, and really pushing Ray Vandersee to dig deeper in the Skelta. It was another beautifully presented entry, wonderfully engineered, extremely well driven, a pleasure to watch, and defiantly fast ! But the entertainment came in many forms. If there is ever a prize for burn out king of the
event, surely it would permanently reside in the possession of Bruce Dekker, in his beautiful wild violet 1970 Falcon Ute. Bruce seems to have a ball at every event, thrilling fans by lighting up the tyres with clouds of smoke off the start line every time. Another entry with interesting traction issues was Joe Chaudee’s mouth-watering white supercharged Lotus Exige. A supercar in every sense, the light little Lotus seemed to go wild every time he touched the throttle. If Joe ever finds a way to transfer all that power directly to the tarmac, he’ll be hard to catch. He was certainly fun to watch! Day two, though again fine and clear, raked everyone with a chill wind that occasionally gusted to about 25 knots, but it didn’t seem to deter the spectators, who continued to arrive in droves. It was on day two that I happened to be trudging and wheezing up the hill through the staging area, laden with camera, bag, and binoculars etc. (and too much grey in my beard!), when the door of a white turbo all-wheel drive Evo7 opened and the driver, Wayne Stevens, very kindly offered me a seat in the car as he staged up to the start line. He advised me to buckle up as he had to do some fairly violent swerving and braking to generate some heat in the tyres, an experience I’m not likely to forget any time soon! I followed his progress with interest and was delighted to see him post some very respectable times indeed, in the 1 min. 35 sec. Range. Many thanks Wayne. All the competitors I met couldn’t be kinder or more helpful. People happy, doing what they love to do, are always wonderful people to meet. One of the Escorts suffered a gearshift failure, and had to finish his run on the back of the truck, and there were a couple Continued on Page 3

From Page 2 of turn-arounds. Graham Dilley’s magnificent red A/C Cobra ended up pointing back where it came from at turn 24. Grateful for no damage, he was soon on his way again, but the cheers from the corporate stand when he came back down were audible for miles! But unfortunately, motor racing in any form can be an unforgiving mistress, and Ray Scagliotti was reminded of this on day two. This rare and very interesting entry, a 1600cc fibreglass bodied lotus style racer, came unstuck on one of the right handers just below the corporate viewing platform, and hit the Armco barrier pretty hard. The little car’s front end was quite heavily damaged, but thankfully Ray wasn’t, and he managed to walk away from the medical station cursing himself harshly, with only a lightly sprained left wrist. The car though, will require a bit more attention. The nature of motor sport is to push the envelope that little bit harder each time one starts, and inevitably, sooner or later, the limit is found. We wish Ray all the best, and hope to see both he and the car back again next year. It’s at times like this, that one wishes the little Argus were a larger publication, there being a story waiting to be told in every car and driver combination. But the best one can do is refer you to the CQMSC website at ‘www.cqmsc.asn.au’, for details of the various class results and times, and heartily encourage all not to miss the next ‘Gold Rush Hill Sprint’. It’s a fantastic event, with boundless potential, growing and improving every year, - and entertainment value plus!
Above: The “Machine of the Mountain”. Ray Vandersee’s jaw-dropping Platinum Skelta G-Force racer, the force to be reckoned with!
Above: A welcome newcomer. Bevan Reed’s beauty - a 1978 burnt orange V6 Capri. A good choice with a lot of potential.
Above: Joe Chaudee’s wild supercharged Lotus Exige. Below: Ray Scagliotti hit the Armco - but he’ll be back.
One to watch.
Congratulations and many thanks to the tireless team at CQMSC, to CQ Crane Hire, to the army of volunteers, without whom, all these things would be impossible, and to the many hundreds of motorsport fans who support this event. Thank you all. At my age, I shouldn’t be wishing time away, but as a hopelessly addicted ‘Wheel Nut”, I find I’m longing for next year already! See you all there. 24 July to 14 August 2019

Old School Cycle Show and Shine Sunday, 7 July saw a celebration of pre-2000 pedal power in the rear beer garden area, at the newly reopened Leichhardt Hotel, with over 40 examples of ageing bicycle designs polished and glinting under the first tentative renewal of sunshine we’d seen for a few days. Hotel owner/proprietor, Mr. Karl Belzner, was delighted to host the event, and had meals and drinks available and musical entertainment in the form of popular local muso ‘Pedro’ to provide the atmosphere. (The bicycle song being the preferred request!) Organiser, avid cycling enthusiast, and retired president of MMPAD, Mr. Graeme Meade was impressed with the turnout, despite the uncertainty of the weather forecast convincing a couple of participants and marketeers to stay at home, and took the opportunity to display some of his own collection of rare and vintage machines. variety of shapes, sizes and types on display in both standard and modified forms, and in both original and restored condition, some coming from as far afield as Mackay, with some over 50 years old and still in regular use. From racers, tourers, dragsters, mountain bikes, and bikes assembled of cannibalised parts from various other bikes, to examples restored with the ultimate attention to detail and probably in better condition than they were when new. There was something of interest wherever one looked. Members of the Gentle folk old bicycle society were in attendance, having come up for a social ride the day before, and they were in their element amid the swap meet and market stalls, vending all manner of bicycle bits and pieces, and memorabilia on the day. Trophies were awarded in a host of categories. ‘People’s choice’ went to the highly unusual curiosity built by a local bicycle shop in bygone days, and resident in the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. ‘Best

racer’ was taken by a beautiful green and gold 1996 machine restored and improved with an attention to detail that the judges could only describe as “bordering on obsessive!” A little dragster brought back to showroom condition and featuring the tallest ‘ape hanger’ handle bars imaginable was also a winner, as was the oldest original bike on show dating from as far back as around 1910, and still in ride ready condition. There was much joking around, and even the odd demonstration of how to manage some of the more unusual contraptions present. The event promoted a friendly relaxing fun day of interest, and was deemed a success by all concerned, with much talk already of another bigger and better show next year. We’ll all look forward to it. Congratulations to Graeme and many thanks to everyone involved.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS IN STYLE Lorna, who has six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, has lived in Mount Morgan for 32 years and moved to Carinity Summit Cottages five years ago. Mount Morgan and Rockhampton businesses also helped Lorna celebrate this major milestone birthday in style. She had her hair and make-up done by Mane Street Hair Studio while John Cole, as well driving Lorna around in his Corvette, provided free music and karaoke for her birthday party through his entertainment business Coley-oke.
Turning 100 years old usually means a quiet party enjoying a birthday cake while reading a letter from the Queen. However, for her 100th birthday Lorna Craney (above) decided to live life in the fast lane. On the day she celebrated one century, Lorna fulfilled her dream of cruising around Mount Morgan in a sports car. Lorna, who lives at the Carinity Summit Cottages aged care community, became a member of the very exclusive ‘100 Club’ on 11 July. Reaching 100 years means Lorna is one of only 4,250 centenarians in Australia. She celebrated the special milestone by seeing the sights of Mount Morgan as a passenger in a classic 1969 hot-red coloured Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible sports car. Vehicle Page 6

Summit Cottages volunteer John Cole (above with Lorna) drove Lorna around the streets of her town, as well as Arthur Timms Lookout and Mount Morgan Dam.
Lorna’s birthday sports car ride and pampering is one of a number of purposeful living experiences being arranged for Summit Cottages residents by Carinity staff.
“It doesn’t matter where it is, I’m lucky to be wherever he takes me. He’s a very good driver,” Lorna said.
“We ask each resident what their one extra special wish is and we’re helping to make those wishes come true.
“Since it’s been raining a lot these last few weeks it’s brought a lot of greenery back to the town.
Lorna wanted to go for a drive around town because she hadn’t been in a car since she moved to Summit Cottages,” Leeann Rolfe, Carinity Summit Cottages Activities Officer said.
“It’s been a wonderful morning, the nicest I’ve had for a long time.” For Lorna, enjoying the pleasure ride in an iconic high-performance vehicle was about as far away as you can get from riding in a sulky as a young child. Horse-drawn carriages were a common form of transport when Lorna was born in the bush near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales on 11 July 1919. She lived through the Great Depression, raised by her father and grandfather before moving into a convent until she was 10. As a teenager Lorna moved to Brisbane where she met her future husband James Craney, a Mount Morgan boy. Together Lorna and James had two children and until the 1970s lived in Brisbane, where Lorna worked at the airport during the war years. MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
“Some residents say they would like to attend a Central Queensland Capras rugby league game in Rockhampton, one wants to play a round of golf and others want to go to the horse races. A few, like Lorna, just want to go for a drive around Mount Morgan to see how the town has changed.” Summit Cottages Residential Manager Margaret Eather said Carinity’s residential aged care staff looked forward to making residents happy. “At Carinity we believe that everyone has the right to live the life they love. Assisting our residents to live a life with purpose and sharing special life experiences with them is what we love to do,” Margaret said. 24 July to 14 August, 2019
FESTIVAL NEWS Golden Mount Festival Association would like to say thank you to all who helped out in the lead up, planning, setting up, execution, and packing up of what has turned into a significant annual event on the Mount Morgan Calendar, the Gold Rush Hill Sprint! The GMF BBQ stand was at the Stopford Way lookout, where spectators could get a great vantage point of the cars coming up the mountain. If you stepped out onto the lookout walkway, you could also see the starting line, and you could certainly hear the roar of those engines! The Saturday saw a reasonable crowd, coming and going all day on the buses, and the Sunday half day event saw more enthusiasts turn out for some fun. Sunday also dished up some pretty ferocious wind gusts, but despite the loss of a marquee, and wind blown hair, everyone was in high spirits and enjoyed themselves. Thank you to our Members, new and old, who stepped up once again to make the days a success, Aaron, Graham, Cass, Kym, Kirra, Dick,Tyler, Reece, Katelyn, Pearce and welcome Liz.. A shout out to the Mount Morgan Community Services Hall for coming on board and manning the starting line site this year, and thankyou to Mount Morgan Rodeo for loaning us some of their equipment. We hope that all had a successful weekend, as well as Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated who had the Corporate site, and Bouldercombe Progress Association who manned the bus stop area. Thanks also to the drivers, crews, officials, the enthusiasts, and of course, the spectators!
This event has the potential to become something amazing, and we look forward to next year! If you would like to be involved, Golden Mount Festival have both committee members, who attend meetings and do all the planning, and Friends of the Festival, who are able to help out at events without any obligation. We would love to welcome some new members, so phone 0411 865 621 or email goldenmountfestival@gmail.com if this may be something you could be interested in.

2019 NAIDOC Celebrations
On Friday, 5 July, 18 organisations and a handful of volunteers came together to celebrate NAIDOC for Mount Morgan with a free community day for people of all ages. The National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebrations is a chance to share the Indigenous culture with the wider community. The day started with a Welcome from Aunty Rosie, who also spoke to us about the theme for this year Voice, Treaty, Truth Let’s work together for a shared future. She told us about the recent history of the culture and how we use our voices and the arts to represent what our ancestors have been through. The ultimate goal of Truth will result in these stories becoming common knowledge and even part of our general schooling. Deadly Choices Cessation Program followed up with some traditional dancing. They were joined by members of our community to conclude their welcome. Throughout the day the various organisations had giveaways and activities for everybody to participate in. There was colouring-in, painting, face-paint, and gluing, as well as bouncy balls, stickers, tattoos, wristbands, pencils and crayons for us to enjoy. Mount Morgan Multi-purpose Health Service, BreastScreen Queensland and Mount Morgan Rotary catered the event, with sandwiches, sweets and a barbecue the order of the day. While all of this was happening a group of under 5’s was going one-by-one to meet and interact with 2 judges as part of our annual baby show. The winners were 0-6 months - Iylah Hardy, 1-2years - Lukye Harkins-Biggs, 3-4years - Nevaeh Toby-Faggs, 4-5 years - Amber Harkins, Most Photogenic – Kleo Bassani, Personality – Skyla Jamieson, Master NAIDOC – Miro Toby-Swindale and Miss NAIDOC – Kleo Bassani. Each winner was presented with a sash, with the age groups also receiving a medallion. While Photogenic and Personality also received a medallion, it came with a prize pack from newsXpress Mount Morgan. The overall winners of Miss and Master received all of this, a crown and a beautiful wood plaque generously created and donated by the Mount Morgan Men’s Shed. Thank you so much! After drawing our lucky doors and huge multi-draw raffle, all that was left to do is cut the beautiful cake created by our local Hot Bread Shop, with some people coming back for seconds.
Thank you to all of the other organisations, who are too many to name, that made this wonderful day possible, as well as the volunteers who enabled it to run smoothly. Lastly to the many, many members of the Mount Morgan general public that came along to make the day such a huge success, thank you and we will see you all the same time next year! Page 8

LORIKEETS HIT ROAD BLOCK IN 2019 RUGBY CAMPAIGN The Mount Morgan Rugby Union Club Lorikeets continued their campaign in the top grade of the Rugby Capricornia Ltd 2019 premiership season on Friday, 19 July. Friday night games are rare in this competition, this point of difference may go some way to explaining Mount Morgan’s poor performance. The Lorikeets were lacking in a number of areas in which they are normally strong, with defence being the most telling. There were periods where Mount Morgan showed the type of play we have come to expect from them, both in defence and attack but for the most part they were their own worst enemies and Brothers took advantage, running in six tries for a total of 40 points. As previously mentioned, Mount Morgan did have some periods of good play and were able to score 3 tries of their own, Connor Stewart once again showed his ability to find the line with two tries and Tyler Toby scored the third. The 40 – 17 loss was a disappointing result but hopefully the Lorikeets can use it as motivation to put their best game on the park against the table topping Dawson Valley Drovers this weekend. In the last round before the semi-finals Mount Morgan are hosting two games, Biloela vs Colts at 1.30 pm and their own game against Dawson Valley at 3.30 pm.

Mount Morgan Historical Museum’s impressive Scouting display covers different aspects of the movement in our area. Included are pictures of the scout huts at Struck Oil and Dee Street, along with badges, flags and uniforms. Baden Powell started scouting on Brownsea Island in 1907. One year later, on 23 November, 1908 the No.1 Crows Patrol of the 1st Mount Morgan Scout Troop was formed. This patrol led by patrol leader E. Lisie comprised, J, Glazebrook, M.C. Hall, F.T. Hall, G. Lawrence, G. Glazebrook, and J. McConnell. Their scouters were V. McDonough and B. G Patterson who was warranted in 1913. Benjamin Gilmore Patterson worked at Mount Morgan Limited as Chief Surveyor and Mining Engineer and was associated with the Scouting movement in Mount Morgan for 46 years and in 1922, Divisional Scoutmaster, Mount Morgan Division, he received the Silver Wolf Award. Later he became District Commissioner and was first patron of the B P Scout Guild in Queensland, before his death in 1955.

Movie Review A DOG’S WAY HOME Everyone should have a puppy. That little soul will think you are absolutely the best person in the entire world. You can’t do better than that, so there’s no need to seek a second opinion. For those of us who are fans of and remember fondly The Incredible Journey, Homeward Bound, this film, A DOG’S WAY HOME is like a second helping of your favourite meal. Made in 2019 from W. Bruce Cameron’s 2017 book, this film has been a Box Office success and although a little scary in parts for the wee folk, it is great viewing for the whole family to enjoy together. Few puppies had a tougher start in life than Bella. She was born to a homeless mum underneath a condemned building on a
construction site, surrounded by a multitude of cats of all shapes, sizes, ages and temperaments. The site owner wants them all gone. He calls in the Animal Control Officers, led by a mean character named Chuck who out of spite, incorrectly identifies and classifies Bella and her mum as a dangerous breed, illegal in their city, Denver, Colorado. Bella is doomed. Chuck is determined to get both her mum and herself. Mother cat is very friendly and helpful but they’re going to need a lot more than she can offer. They need an intervention, a saviour. At that moment, animal lovers Lucas and Olivia, two residents of Denver decide to fight for mother cat and all of her kittens, unaware that Bella and her mum are deep in the shadows underneath the building. They leave food for the kitties,
COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB Mount Morgan Community Hall members have been a busy lot this last month! With lots of official business being sorted in the background, members have come out in force to give the building a tidy up. On Sunday. 30 June saw around 25 people turn up and get stuck into the kitchen, bar and pantry area, while others played outside digging, planting and mulching. Rodeo Association provided a free sausage sizzle on the day and some of those unable to attend made donations of cleaning products and plants. We sincerely thank everyone for their donations, time and effort on the day, and thanks to those sorting all of the business stuff behind the scenes! On the 13-14 July, members manned a BBQ stall at the Gold Rush Hill Sprint. The BBQ stall was located at the start line, and provided a good view of the wheels spinning as they rounded the first corner. The sounds and sight of the cars racing past was certainly enough to get the blood pumping, and Page 10
they stand up to the site owner and they intend to find homes for everyone before demolition begins. Bella senses Lucas’ caring nature and on the spur of the moment she makes a momentous decision. She lunges from the darkness and runs toward Lucas as fast as her little legs will take her. This is just the beginning of Lucas’ and Bella’s great adventure, filled with laughter and joy, danger and excitement, love and loss, great trials and courage, victory and reunion... All with the invaluable help of true friends and allies. A DOG’S WAY HOME has a great cast including Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, Wes Studi and Jonah Hauer-King, it runs for an hour and a half (so absorbed it flew by), and it’s rated PG for “mild themes”. Everyone should have a puppy. A DOG’S WAY HOME... Loved it!
everyone enjoyed the action. It was certainly a top spot to hang out around the barbie! Thanks to Golden Mount Festival for the opportunity, and also for all the setting up. Pride in Your Town How much better can it get? It is so wonderful to read about all the wonderful achievements of our Australian female sporting heroes. Of course number one on the radar at present is our amazing Ash Barty accounted well for herself at Wimbledon. Ash of course was born in Ipswich and now ranks as Number One in the world of tennis. Then we have Hannah Green who was born in Perth and recently won the PGA Golf Championships in USA. Hannah is only 22 years of age so will go on to win many more world championships. From golf we go to surfing and here we acknowledge Stephanie Gilmour’s record of being the World Champion Surfer for seven years. This is a feat never obtained before by a male of female surfer. Then of course we cannot go forward without mentioning our very own Samantha Kerr who was born in Freemantle and received Australian of the Year Award. Sam is classed as the best international soccer player in the world. Presently she Captains the Australian team. From this modern era we recall some of the Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. held a successful Trivia Night on Saturday, 20 July.
other great leaders in their field of sport and bringing so many accolades to our nation. How about Raelene Boyle A.M MBE? Raelene was born in Coburg and was classed as the best (drug free) sprinter of her era. When running in the Munich Olympics she was placed second in two events and only received the silver medals. However in the years past the German girl was proven to be on performance enhancing drugs so really Raelene should have received the gold medals. Sad, but these things happen. Then we have Betty Cuthbert AC MBE who was born in Merrylands and became known as our Australian Golden Girl. Betty in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne won three gold medals and then went on to Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964, breaking more world records. At the Rome games she hurt her knee and after that she concentrated on the 400 metres in Tokyo. Perhaps we all remember where Betty was pushed in her wheel chair by Raelene Boyle as a torch bearer at the Sydney 2000 games. In her later years she devoted much of her time to the study and research of MS Disease.
We must not forget our Dawn. Dawn Frazer was born in Baimain and possibly is one of the most famous of all our wonderful sports people. She was always thought of a larrikin and her early swimming was against the male swimmers in the Balmain pool. Dawn was the first female swimmer to win gold medals in three consecutive Olympics in 1956, 1960, 1964. From 1956 to 1964 she broke the world record for the 100 metres nine successful times. How many more would Dawn have won if the Australian swimming officials had not marred her career? Dawn has forever followed the talents of our swimmers and today plays important roles in all their lives. How lucky Australia is with only a small population and can excel in so many sporting fields and produce the best in the world. It is worth noting also that many of our top athletes are born in country areas and not in cities where opportunity is more forthcoming. We hope these stars will bring back memories of your favourite sporting heroes also. Think clean - Be tidy as Morgan street footpath is looking so good.
TRIVIAL PURSUIT CLAIM TRIVIA HONOURS
The winning team was “Trivial Pursuit” comprised of Jayne and Grant Farrell and Caitlin and Joshua Mitchell who donated $100 of their winnings back to MMPAD. DEE BOWLS CLUB Thanks to the enthusiastic members of the Dee Bowls Club, the Social Club Fun Day on Sunday, 30 June 2019 was a success, with several new faces along with new members joining in on an enjoyable day of bowls, along with a barbecue between games. Our volunteer’s did a marvellous job, with special thanks to President Michael, Bowls Secretary Samantha, and Bar Manager Daniel. Due to the success of the Social Club Fun Day, the Dee Bowls Club will be having a similar event every last Sunday of each month commencing at 2 pm. Other community service or social clubs in the area are welcome to join in with a barbecue after an eight-end game of bowls. A further eight ends will be played to finalise the day. If you have a team from your Club who would like to join in on the day, give either the Secretary – Kevin Fox a phone call on 0423 410 917, or let Bar Manager – Daniel know at the club on Friday from 4 pm or Sundays from 3 pm. Meals and a ‘coldie’ are available on Fridays and Sundays from the Bar for an affordable price of $9.00, with three choices of meals available.
RODEO NEWS The Mount Morgan Rodeo Association would like to thank all volunteers who joined in and helped to make an amazing, hard working and efficient team for the association’s food hut at the CQ Crane Hire Gold Rush Hill Sprint. It was a successful weekend in the pits on 13-14 July for the association, and we are looking forward to doing it all over again next year. Thank-you to the Golden Mount Festival Association for reaching out and asking us to join for catering for the Hill Sprint. We’ve enjoyed taking part, and building friendships. The committee has recently purchased a new Baine Marie. It’s arrived just in time for the Mount Morgan Show and it’s certainly going to help maintain a speedy and efficient kitchen on the day. We’re looking forward to sizzling those steaks again for you and loading your burgers with the freshest produce available. Our next event beyond the Mount Morgan Show is the car and bike show “Motors on the Mount”. This year the Mount Morgan Primary School Oval will home the event on 21 September. We will share more as the event nears. Keep it country!
The Dee Bowls Club have welcomed the addition of the Mount Morgan Men’s Shed (MMMS) to its premises at 50726 Burnett Hwy, Horse Creek, Mount Morgan. The MMMS members will be using the large tin shed to house much of their heavy machinery, and will be encouraging both present and any new members to utilise their equipment once all ready for use. Their representative Keith Watts stated the group will be remaining in the Mount Morgan Hospital grounds, however now they will be able to use their larger machinery and stockpiled resources at the Dee Bowls Club, hopefully on Mondays through to Fridays, all day if needed. It was hoped that the new site at the Dee would commence from 8 July 2019. Special thanks are extended to the Mount Morgan Pentecostals as partners with the Dee Bowls Club Inc., who contribute to halving our costs. Support of this nature has been invaluable not only to the Dee financially, but also to the Mount Morgan Community both young and old alike. Thank you for the opportunity to place these items into the Mount Morgan Argus. Kevin Fox - Secretary/Treasurer

DEE RIVER OLDIES
WANTED KNOWN
Friday, 12 July finally had arrived. The Dee River Oldies Group members boarded the bus and headed to Byfield. Seeing the sights along the way made the trip enjoyable. As we got closer to Byfield the wattle trees were out in full bloom and with the rain they had in the last few weeks the paddocks were nice and green. Seeing the pine trees, we knew we were getting closer. On arriving we were served a lovely Christmas lunch and had music played for us while we dined. Everyone joined in and had a good time. Once the members had a look around, we were back on the bus and came home via Yeppoon. It was good to see the ocean as calm as it was. Dee River Oldies would like to thank the Ferns Hideaway crew and John, our bus driver for a fantastic day.

WITH THANKS The Dobson and Leigh families would like to sincerely thank all of the staff of the Mount Morgan Multi Purpose Health Service. The care, compassion and love that they have shown our mum, Yvonne Dobson, during her palliation was nothing short of exceptional. Their arms also wrapped around mum’s family and friends making this hard journey a little less difficult for everyone. Mum became a lot more settled knowing that she was “home” surrounded by some familiar faces, ones that she was comfortable with. To the Mount Morgan community “thank you” also for showing us the love.
