Mount Morgan Celebrates Youth

Week 2018

Did you know that National Youth Week was established in 2000? For the first time ever Queensland Celebrated their own Youth Week from Friday the 6th of April to Sunday 15th April 2018. To mark this momentous occasion, Mount Morgan joined Queensland in the celebrations with plenty of activities for everyone aged 12 - 25. The events kicked off at 9:30am on the 12th of April with a mixed touch football match at Newman Oval. Mr Fortescue kindly took time off from his holidays to referee the match. The youth flocked down to watch the Walkie Talkies and Fergilicious battle it out for the grand prize. Miss Slater even joined a field position. In the end, Fergilicious was victorious and left the Walkie Talkies to come in second place. Prizes were awarded for best costume and even best dance to be performed on a try. The entertainment didn’t stop there though. After the match, eveyone made their way down to Boyd Park to join in the rest of the celebrations.

The day proved to be a great success with at least 60 children in attendance. Skate park demonstrations, rock painting, sack races, stress ball making, and the Roseberry and CQ Youth Connect information stall were on offer to those who went. Fun Time Amusements set up a jumping castle for the younger children to enjoy. The biggest crowd pleaser was the bandana and t-shirt tie-dying where some very colourful apparel was created. Mount Morgan Rotary were on hand to cook up a storm and provided a free BBQ with sausages on bread and burgers.

Free entry to the pool was also provided and Zooper Doopers were given out to all in attendance as a refreshment. We would like to thank our sponsors for the event. Without you, and volunteers, events like this would never be possible: Mount Morgan IGA, Mount Morgan Promotion & Development Inc, newsXpress, Moonlite Cafe, Fox Video, Rockhampton PCYC, Deputy Mayor Cherie Rutherford, Mount Morgan Rotary Club, Rockhampton Trophy Centre and the Golden Mount Festival Association. We hope next years event is bigger and better than ever. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and congratulations to Cassandra Donald, the Coordinator.

Meet the New Owners of the Silver Wattle Caravan Park

After eight moves in eight years, the new owners of the Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Caravan Park have settled down in Mount Morgan, and that’s where they intend to stay. David and Debi Brant took over the reins approximately four weeks ago and are settling in well with their new venture. The family is originally from Cooroy in the Sunshine Coast and Dave is a registered builder. Both Dave and Debi have a passion for gardening, and before they came to Mount Morgan had a Nursery. Consequently over a thousand plants made the journey with them to their new home.

Pride in Your Town

Mount Morgan – A small town with a big heart! This was clearly evident on a recent Saturday morning when the reception room of the C Q Family Practice was full of ladies and three gents and not one sick person in sight. No, the folk had gathered for a working bee workshop to knit or crochet some “Share & Care Bears”. These lovely, bright little cuddly bears are given to our local children who do not always appreciate some of the Doctor’s necessary tasks. The bears have a magical effect on tears and were lovingly knitted or crocheted by locals for local families. The table space was covered in knitting needles and a large quantity of padding, while a huge plastic container held bundles of delightful coloured wool; even patterns were available so there were no excuses. The ladies and men made good use of all these items and many charming colourful bears and their clothing were completed or started. Another speciality of the morning was the official showing of the “Suggestion Box”, a model house beautifully built with all modern conveniences, even a solar system, built for the surgery by Stephen Rendalls and his son. The “Suggestion Box“house may receive a number of suggestions for the Practice but Stephen said there will be no orders accepted for the house. Doctor Choudhry and his wife, Sobia also joined the group for a delightful morning tea supplied by the staff, and the Doctor was appreciative of all the work by the ladies and gents present for the comfort of the children. The staff of the practice, 3 clerical and 2 nursing, must be congratulated for their effort to assist little ones facing some traumatic moments. I am sure the little ones say a ”BIG Thank You”. From an overheard whisper, there maybe another working bee workshop next school holidays, June or July. Care to join the fun? Over the Festival week end, visitors may be interested in the history of the Museum building so here are a few items of interest. The original building was erected in 1895, and was an impressive drapery and clothing store owned by James Stewart and Co. That company had operated in Rockhampton from 1862. In later years the Mount Morgan Woods family bought the business in Rockhampton but still trades under the original name. With the closure of the mine in 1925 the business closed in 1928 and it remained empty for many years until in the 1930’s it became a roller skating rink with a very uneven floor so it took some skill to remain upright. Many a spill occurred from the game ones who tried skating. Then it remained idle again till 1950 until Mount Morgan Limited bought the building. After many building alterations it became the Single men’s quarters for displaced men from many Eastern European countries of different nationalities. These men had to work at Mount Morgan Limited for two years before they could then seek employment in their chosen careers. In the late 1950’s the Amateur Dramatic Group took over most of the building for their productions with some rooms being allotted to the Red Cross, Child Welfare and Community Health. In 1977 Mount Morgan Limited donated the building to the Trustees of the Mount Morgan Historical Society so all valuable items in the East Street Museum could be relocated to better premises. The present Museum was opened on the 21st November 1983 and is still progressing and has become a major tourist attraction for our town. A tidy and clean town reflects the pride and self-satisfaction of its residents.

The History of William (Bill) Meade My grandfather William (Bill) Meade was born in Allandale, near Ballart in 1886, at some stage he moved to New Zealand, where he married in Wellington. He died in 1968, when I was 12, he lived with us off and on, and I was very close to him. He told me lots of “yarns” over the years, one about driving bullock teams in the Snowy Mountains.

It was a medal, mistakenly referred to as the “Gallipoli Star” by Anzac and British troops.

In 1915 he was working as a Head Lad in a stable in Riccarton, near Christchurch. In November 1915, he signed up; he would have been 30. He didn’t speak about the war very much, once he told me about leading donkeys with wounded on, down hills, but he wasn’t at Gallipoli. He spent all his time during WW1 in the Egyptian Campaign. He never said, but I guess he would have been looking after the horses. Bill served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces from 16/11/15 to 2/3/19, he served almost 3 years overseas. 7/2285 Trooper William Meade.

The Ottoman War Medal was a gallantry decoration instituted by the Ottoman Sultan Reshad V on March 1 1915. In the centre of the badge inside the crescent is the cypher of Sultan Mehmed V and characters representing the words, ‘The Victorious’. Below this is the Muslim calendar date 1333 - equivalent to the year 1915 in the western Gregorian calendar. It was awarded for distinguished war service and officers and enlisted personnel from both the Ottoman Army and Navy were eligible to receive it. Military personnel from the Ottoman Empire’s wartime allies, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria, could also be awarded it. It was officially titled the Ottoman War Medal, but was also known as the Gallipoli Star. The medal was made in Turkey and Germany, so there are some differences to the design and the quality. Poorer quality ones went to the soldiers, better quality ones to the officers.

My Grandfather spent all of his overseas time in Egypt fighting against the Turks. He would have been serving with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles (CMR). The CMR where involved in the charge of the light brigade at Beersheba in 1917, alongside the Aussies, as well as other battles.

I’m lucky to have this, it’s something I treasure, and I guess my Grandfather did too. He lived a very humble life, he died in a War Veterans home, I visited him the afternoon before he passed. His possessions fitted into a suitcase, a small one. By Graeme Meade.

Bill bought back from the war, one souvenir; he showed it to me once and told me how he got it. He told me he was out on patrol one day; he came across a wounded Turkish soldier, the man was begging for water, my grandfather stopped and gave him a drink from his water bottle. The man then grasped my grandfather’s arm and beckoned him to wait. The man was fiddling around with his tunic; then put something into his hand.

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video

Chock-full of wit, music and colour, COCO is Disney Pixar’s best movie since TOY STORY 3. At times a little scary, often hilarious and ultimately very tender, this is a movie that will totally captivate people of all ages and genders; and if you remain unaffected by Coco it may be time to visit your heart specialist. So, an invitation is hereby extended to all of us “tough guys” out there to put aside the “macho” for a couple of hours, sit down with the family and watch COCO. The boy can play! Miguel Rivera is twelve years old and he loves music so much he wants to make it his life and become a truly great musician like his idol, the universally loved and revered, the late Ernesto De La Cruz. Sadly, music is forbidden in Miguel’s home since his great great Grandmother made it a family law many many tears ago after being abandoned by her musician husband. The Rivera family has enforced this iron-clad policy against music ever since, and every generation that followed went directly into the honourable family business of shoemaking. This is expected to be Miguel’s destiny as well, but his heart is set on music. When his Grandma catches him preparing for a music competition on Dia de los Muertos she smashes his prized and much-loved old guitar... Oh no! What to do? Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel remembers that his idol Ernesto’s famous guitar is on display during the celebrations. Perhaps he could just “borrow” it for the competition.

Mount Morgan Rodeo

With the very first strum of Ernesto’s guitar something magical happens, and Miguel and his trickster canine buddy are launched into an extraordinary adventurous journey that may unlock the real story of his family’s history. Directed by Lee Unkrich (who, funnily enough also directed Sunday May 6th 2018 - Mount Morgan Showgrounds TOY STORY 3), voiced by Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal Gates open 6am and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, COCO is rated PG for Horse sports from 8am “mild themes” and runs for one hundred magical minutes. Rodeo kicks off at 11am Like Molly always said, “Do yourselves a favour... “. Enjoy life together. Watch COCO... Loved it!

ANZAC DAY SERVICES MOUNT MORGAN

Dawn Service - 4.30am (Anzac Park) 10.30am (form for march outside School of Arts) Depart 10.45am for 11am Service at Anzac Park

THE ANZAC DAY PARADE A young child watched the ANZAC day parade and saw the medals the marchers wore. He turned to his dad and asked with a grin, who or what are they marching for? There are a lot of reasons my son, said dad, come sit down and I’ll tell you a few. They march for the soldiers who didn’t come home, for the ships that were sunk and their crews. And for those who manned the aircraft that flew unfriendly skies They faced many dangers and sometimes lost their lives. We think of the widows and children that these men left behind And to be aware of their welfare and try to give them peace of mind. The fuzzy wuzzy Angels carried wounded soldiers along the Kokoda track. The Front Line Angels (nurses) helped soldiers regain their health. Courage they would never lack. They march for the Womens Land Army who worked outside when their menfolk were not there. They ploughed the ground and grew the crops, to hear them complain would be rare. Then there is the Salvation Army who are worthy of our gratitude indeed. They provided food and comfort on the battlefield and wherever there was a need. They march for the Unknown Soldier. His name will never be known. And all of those who died like him. He did not die alone. Not only men and women but animals too we remember on ANZAC Day. They helped to save out soldiers lives each in their own special way. Jack Simpson and a donkey were a familiar sight for the wounded at Gallipoli. They rescued about 300 soldiers before a bullet struck Jack an unfortunate tragedy. The capture of the wells at Beersheba was due largely to the Whalers, Australian bred horses. Camels were also used in Egypt by the Australian Army forces. Many pigeons were trained and nurtured during World War 2. In Papua New Guinea communications were poor so many important missions they flew. Black Labrador tracker dogs were used in Malaya and Vietnam. They saved the lives of their handlers and team members and were expert at tracking a man. We remember the soldiers who defended Australia when Darwin was under attack. The enemy were so close to home. Thank goodness they didn’t come back. So you see son ANZAC Day means different things to different people, including you and me. Praise the Lord we can keep the spirit alive and keep Australia free. Alma Graham – April 2008

Kindy Care

The Kindy Care Mt Morgan children have been visiting the local Mount Morgan Library on a Monday for the Lively Library sessions with Miss Kath. The children listen to wonderful stories, sing a variety of songs and make music using their bodies (clapping tapping feet etc.) Miss Kath also organises a craft activity for the children to complete, this is wonderful and positive activity for the Kindy to partake in. The children enjoy being out in the community. On our return to the Kindy we detour through the local primary school to allow the pre-prep children the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the local school environment, reinforcing the location of the different amenities that the children will access next year. On Monday the 21st March a local Aboriginal artist and grandparent of one of our Kindy children came and taught the children about Aboriginal painting. The children learnt about what the symbols mean and about what each colour represents in Aboriginal paintings. Piruwanni brought in some of her own paintings that she had completed to show the children and explained the meaning behind each of the paintings. The children then attempted their own Aboriginal dot painting on one of the hand drawn pictures. We had some wonderful results.
