History & Reflections

Pride in your Town Remember when we wrote about some of the crops and the plants that changed the history of the world, like potatoes, sugar and bamboo? Well, our next plant is rice. Rice rivals wheat as one of the world’s most important food crops. It has transformed landscapes across the globe and fed the most populous nation, China, through the most traumatic social revolution of the twentieth century. It has been blamed for global warming (but it could be statisticians, and not the traditional paddy field which is the fault). Rice provides food for around three billion people around the world. Rice falls into four main categories; upland rice grown on hillsides, rain fed rice raised in shallow water, irrigated rice plugged into the paddy field and deep water rice planted in estuaries and places that flood naturally. It is the oldest continuously grown cereal in the world, and it is raised in more than 100 countries. To grow one of the most important crops in the world, 12 million square kilometres of land in Southeast Asia, America, Africa, Australasia and southern Europe (Italy especially) are devoted to the rice fields. It is not enough as in less than 10 years, by around 2025, an extra 1.5 billion people will come to depend on rice. It is amazing how these plants can really change our world and its history. Enjoy your rice pudding now. ooo0ooo This is just a blast from the past to show how life was before the days of chain saws. Before chainsaws were invented the logging industry in the United States, Canada and Australia was a seriously challenging occupation, and we are only talking about 125 years ago. There were forests full of monster trees and cutting them down was done by hand. Look at the length of the two-man hand saw and heavy duty axes used to drop these tremendous trees. It is almost inconceivable that these trees could be cut down by hand. The work required very strong men (and horses) working long hours for minimal pay. Could you imagine doing this to earn a living? After a tree was finally felled, it took a week or more to cut it up into sections that could be managed and transported by train to a lumber yard. How did they get those logs up onto the flatbed of a train? A long time before anyone ever thought of a mobile home or caravan hollowed out logs were used to house and feed the logging crews. Even some became the mobile office for the company. We are accustomed to our modern conveniences like electricity and gasoline powered chain saws and it is mind boggling to see how tasks were performed before these appeared on the scene. Enjoy the photos.

UMI

By Graeme Meade

I love it when I save something! This steriliser had been used for years as a horse trough. After that it was dumped in a shed, it was about to be crushed and buried. It was very grotty when I got it, but after scrubbing it and a little painting, it looks a lot better. I was told it came from the Mount Morgan Hospital when it was rebuilt in 1968. The unit is marked UMI. I can find no reference to UMI when I search for it. I guess it’s an old Australian company. It is electric and has an element on the bottom. The power cables have been cut, but the remnants are cloth covered, so I would guess it to be around the 1930s or 1940s. It probably had a stainless steel basket in it to hold the instruments that where bring sterilised. Last week I also received a milk urn that has UMI Enterprises stamped on it. It seems strange to have 2 different items with the same letters. They are both similar, round, and both hold liquids. Maybe it is the same company. This urn is different to others I have seen, the handle is more rounded. I was thinking that it is from the 1930s. A gentleman was looking at it last week with interest. He told me had worked in dairies all his life from 1950 and he had never seen a milk urn with UMI Enterprises stamped into it. He noted that the shape and build were a little different. He thinks it would be over 100 years old. Makes sense to me, the original name has been XXXed out; it was last used in the Wowan area. I have found a couple more UMI Enterprises urns. They are small ones, maybe 10 litres.

MMPAD Meet and Greet

Pictured above L-R Gail Carter & Matt Winning

On Saturday the 8th July MMPAD members, concerned parents and citizens, local business owners, representatives from organisations including Bluecare, Mount Morgan Multipurpose Centre, Redfrog, The Golden Mount Festival Association, Rodeo Association and the Dee Bowls Club joined together with one common concern. That being what can we do for the Youth of Mount Morgan? High School Principal Trevor Rickertt, Head of Dept, Junior School Gail Carter and Head of Department Senior School Matt Winning along with School Chaplain Wayne Linney, spoke about the lack of sporting facilities, activities and other opportunities for the young people of our town. When Matt from the High School originally approached MMPAD for assistance, the executive proposed an initial meet and greet to ascertain community interest, as the first step towards further consultation with all stake holders. On Saturday the 15th July MMPAD executives raised the concerns which were identified at the initial meeting to Member for Mirani Jim Pearce and then also to Michael Rowe, Rockhampton Regional Council General Manager (Operations) on the 17th July in Rockhampton. The next stage is a formal meeting with immediate stakeholders which is currently being organised. Thank you to all who were able to attend the Meet and Greet. Mount Morgan Primary

High School Sports

On Friday the 14th of July, Mount Morgan SHS held their track and field athletics carnival which was a day to remember! The three house teams, Gordon, Paterson and Kendall, fought their way through the events including Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 100m, 200m and 400m. A special event was added this year called the Principal’s Cup, where we found out who the fastest boy and fastest girl in the school were, settled by a 100m sprint race. The very first Principals Cup saw a grade 9 girl, Holly Cant, show the young and old just how fast she is as she took out the race in 14.90s. We then witnessed amazing athleticism in the boys Principals Cup, where Joshua McDougall in grade 12 showed his young and old rivals just how fast he can run with a photo finish win, which he took out in 12.09s. Overall, all athletes showed true spirit and modelled exceptional behaviour making the day fun and exciting. Next year the year 12 students MIGHT win in the annual teachers verse students relay, but they will have to bring their A game. Well done to the Age Champions who are listed below. Movie Review

Set in a small Western Australian mining town that seems very familiar to us, populated by well-drawn, unforgettable characters, JASPER JONES is a story that grabs and holds you from the very start.

Matters

By Trish Mathers - Phone 04005 91504

Years ago we had the most amazing little creature come into care. She had been found when people were digging out their causeway, and feeling sure she was a native animal, they brought her to us. She weighed in at only 4 gms, was only partly furred, and was obviously a baby. She was a Planigale. Planigales are a very tiny mammal, in fact, they are marsupials. Fully grown they weigh in at around 7gms. To give you an idea of their small size, a teaspoon holds around 5gms. Planigales are the third smallest marsupial in the world, and they can have up to ten babies at a time!

Can you imagine how small these little babies would be? Our little wonder we named Tiny. Fully grown she was only about one quarter of the size of a house mouse. Planigales are meat eaters primarily, and Tiny’s main diet was mealworms while in care. In the wild they will catch and eat insects, grubs and small animals. They have even been known to jump on the back of a mouse and kill it! Pretty brave for such a little creature! Planigales have very long noses, much like bandicoots, and are a

Further investigations by a bat specialist, she was found to have no teeth left. This is very often caused by the bats eating cocos palm fruits. The fruit is unusually hard and causes their teeth to be ground down to nothing. Please do not plant cocos palms, and if you have some in your yard, you might consider removing them for the benefit of our native animals.

Ready Set Go For The Mount Morgan Show

15

Not long now to this year’s Mount Morgan Show to be held on 12th August 2017. We aim to build on the success of previous years and make the 2017 Show better than ever. In line with the long standing tradition of Queensland Agricultural Shows and the Mount Morgan Show, in particular, there will be fun and entertainment for the whole family. From horses, cattle, poultry, caged birds, arts and craft, photography, cooking, sewing and needlework, farm and garden, horticulture and this year for the first time, Lego, exhibitors will be displaying the best our region has to offer. Keen interest is expected in the Lego Competition where any Lego construction can be entered in classes for under 6’s, under 12’s under 17’s and an open category. The last date for entry of exhibits in the various pavilion sections is Friday 4th August 2017. An entry form can be obtained from the website mountmorganshow.com.au and completed forms can be either posted to PO BOX 183, Mount Morgan, Qld, 4714 or lodged with MMPAD at the Railway Complex, 1 Railway Parade. President of the Mount Morgan Agricultural Show Committee, Brian Glover said, “Our special attraction for this year are the Crackup Sisters. Everyone will remember their great performances a few years ago at the Show and the Festival. We are assured that they have only got better so make sure you come along and enjoy what they have to offer.” The Crackup Sisters will provide four shows at various times during the day. There will also be Resta Reptile Shows, which proved very popular last year, and First Light Entertainment will conduct Circus Workshops which will be entertaining crowds with stilt walking. Another special attraction prior to the fireworks will be “The It’s Flammable Fire Show”. Brian said, “The It’s Flammable Fire Show is a 25 minute choreographed stilt walking fire show, featuring fire hula hoop, fire poi, fire sticks of all shapes and sizes, coloured flame and fire eating and is not to be missed. Remember, it will be on just before the fireworks display, so if you plan to go home and come back, make sure you come before 6pm.” Free Face Painting will also be provided by CQ Funky Faces and Johnson Park Petting Zoo and Pony Rides will be back and is always a winner with the little ones. Ring events with horses and cattle will commence at 8am and will run throughout the day. Live music will be provided from 4pm until the fireworks at 7pm and speaking of the fireworks, if they are anything like last year’s you won’t want to miss them. Don’t forget the licensed bar, great burgers, raffles, junior motorbike trails and side show alley. Gate fees have been kept at the same price as last year with $10 for Adults, $7 for Pensioners and Students and a Family pass for 2 Adults and 2 Students for $30. Every gate ticket can also be entered in the draw for the three lucky gate prizes of an IGA Mount Morgan $250 Voucher, a Stewarts Towing and Service Station $100 Voucher and a Georges Workwear and Country Outfitters $50 Voucher. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our great sponsors and our dedicated committee and I would urge everyone to come along on the 12th August and help continue the great tradition of Mount Morgan Shows”, Brian said.
