Pride in Your Town For many years we have concluded our articles with “Think Clean - Be Tidy” and this is as important nowadays as it was 7 years ago. Our town is looking more cared-for so let us all help at all times and on Clean up Australia Day also. Do not let a few minor thoughtless people take away the pride we hold in our town. With Anzac Day approaching we wish to reprint the Frank Golding article that was published in the Centenary Book of 1882 – 1982. Many may not have had the opportunity to read that book.

“The Coronation Light”

A Mount Morgan landmark, the Coronation Light, remains today as a reminder of the town’s busier and prosperous past. The Light was erected by the Municipal Council in 1902, to commemorate the coronation of Edward V11, and was originally situated at the intersection of Morgan and East Streets opposite the Leichardt Hotel. It was removed to its present site at Anzac Park in 1947, when the main street was bituminised. The Lamp was originally a gas lamp connected to the Mount Morgan Gasworks on Byrnes Parade, but is now lit by electricity. It is erected on a concrete pedestal 5ft 6ins high with a 4ft square base, on top of which is an iron gas standard about 14ft high, which holds the light.

The Coronation Light stands in Anzac Park overlooking the town’s War Memorial, and as well as being a reminder of the King Edward’s Coronation in 1902, it is itself a War Memorial to the Mount Morgan troopers who fought in the Boer war in South Africa. There are two tablets on the pedestal. One reads: “In Memory of Mount Morgan Troopers, who left the town to fight in the Boer War in South Africa”, The other tablet reads: “The Coronation Light was erected by the Municipal Council to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward VII …. Arthur Mackenzie, Mayor 1902”. A further Memorial stone is opposite the Community Services Hall honouring John Charles Boyes, who served in the First World war in France as an Ambulance man. He had never smoked in his civilian life but in France where the smell of death in the trenches was so overpowering he took up smoking, to the detriment of his own health. Upon his memorial stone are the words: “In grateful memory of John Charles Boyes who nobly served his fellow men”.

“The local community has really been fantastic throughout this process, and supporting the project despite the necessary interruptions, and I would like to thank them for their patience and understanding during these works.”

“The rich history here, including the mine, the railway, museums and beautiful architecture, provides a wonderful foundation from which to forge the town’s future as a thriving tourist destination. As well as the Lively Morgan Street programme, Advance Rockhampton is working on other strategies and campaigns to make this happen.

“It was especially pleasing to see the school kids there today because they have been watching the transformation from the classroom windows these past months, and this morning was their chance to be part of the opening,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The new Explore Rockhampton Destination Guide will include the top ten experiences in Mount Morgan, we will be collaborating with Mount Morgan Promotion and Development to refresh their online presence, and Advance Rockhampton will provide opportunities for local businesses to take part in an exclusive and The occasion was the perfect venue for the launch subsidised Small Business Management Program.” of the “Lively Morgan Street” and “Advance Mount Mount Morgan Central State School Morgan” programmes. Samuel Lamb (Junior) - Part 1. At the age of thirteen, he was a ringbarker in the Mount Eugene area near Gladstone and later at Biloela, working on a property owned by the James Sterrit family.

Towns such as Mount Morgan have a wealth of history and entwined in this history are people, some well known, others not so well known. Samuel Lamb is one such person who has in his own way contributed to the history of Mount Morgan. He was born in 1906, the son of Samuel Lamb and Mary Ann Lamb (nee Crook), and although he was bought up in the then thriving community he never went to school and never learnt to read and write. At the age of 25, Samuel Lamb married Sarah Mavis Bucton in the Catholic church and this marriage was blessed with 11 children – eight sons and three daughters. Two of Samuel’s sons died at an early age. Samuel, because of his lack of education, spent most of his life working as a labourer of one sort or another.

The Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group that meet at the Welfare House on Thompson Avenue invite the people of Mount Morgan to an open day on Tuesday 20th March 2018. We will have some displays of the work that we have done over the past years and we will be happy to show you anything that you think that you would be interested in doing or seeing made. Our Hostess for the day will be Lesley Bain and Lesley will show you around the building and discuss any

From this property Samuel went to a neighbouring property owned by the Campbells. He was employed as a fencer, ring-barker and prickly pear clearer. Samuel spent most of his working life working on properties in the Dawson and Callide Valleys and it was from his work with horses that he was able to participate in the buck-jumping shows of Curley Bell, Joe Atkinson, and many other shows which visited Mount Morgan in the early days. He rode buck-jumpers at Sam Fuller’s show at Dululu. Samuel also liked to attend the race meetings which were held at Mount Morgan, Wowan, Dululu, Baralaba and other places in the two valleys. Samuel was also involved in mustering horses in the Parie (now Biloela) area for the Beak Family. Other occupations throughout his lifetime included work at the smelters and the big dump at the Mount Morgan Mine during WWII years.

CRAFT OPEN DAY of the displays that you see.

The Rockhampton Regional Council have upgraded the building and we are proud that we are able to use it each week for our crafts. We would love to see you between the hours of 10.00am and 1.00pm and we will have a cup of tea or coffee and light morning tea for you to enjoy. Come along and see what we do and maybe there will be something that you might like to learn and so join our group.

Samuel spent many of his earlier years swimming in the creeks, rivers and dams and it was this experience that enabled him to rescue a baby in the flood of 1928. He swam down the flooded river near Wura (in the Dawson Valley) to save James Straw’s son. Samuel worked hard but he also played hard, taking a keen interest in old-time dancing, sports such as football, cricket, boxing and running. “It was a hard, but happy life, one which it was my fortune to have. I now look back over the years that have passed and in the twilight of my life I can truly say ‘Well Sammy Lamb, it was all worthwhile’,” he said. Samuel Lamb’s history was compiled by Mount Morgan and District Historical Research Officer, Mr Frank Golding. This story was written from Mr. Golding’s notes. Next edition we will bring you an addition to the above story which was written by Mount Morgan resident and Samuel Lamb’s son Trevor Lamb.

You are very welcome to attend even if you only wish to see our lovely building. President Heather Barker said that we will have a lot of members from Tuesday patchwork, Wednesday ceramics and Thursday knitting and crochet there to talk to you. Come along and enjoy a morning at Welfare House in Thompson Avenue. For further information feel free to Contact President Heather Barker on - 0437 503 467.

fingerlings find new home

Saturday 17th February 2018, saw approximately thirty people gather at the Mount Morgan No. 7 Dam for MMPAD’s Annual Fingerling release. Craig Cluff from Hanwood Fish Hatchery in Murgon was up at daybreak to prepare the fingerlings for their journey to Mount Morgan.

MMPAD is also keen to monitor the frequency and size of successful catches in the dam.

With buckets and containers inhand, the locals all gathered around the boat ramp eagerly waiting for the Hanwood Landcruiser to arrive.

Give us a call, email or facebook us if you would like to share your catch with our readers.

Approximately 9,500 Golden Perch or (Yellow Belly) fingerlings were released in various locations in the waters of the Dam. Craig stated “It was a fantastic turn out and a lovely day for it. This is a credit to MMPAD for advertising this event. I will be seeing you again next year for the next restocking”.

The Orange Dot

Visitors to the Railway Museum

Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video

Brigsby Bear What a rare gem is BRIGSBY BEAR. The sleeper hit of the year that is destined to become a cult classic...And it is unique. We’ve seen movies based on a similar premise before (think “BLAST FROM THE PAST’ or, whisper it’s name... ‘BAD BOY BUBBY’), but nothing like BRIGSBY.

Friday the 9th February, saw forty-one visitors arrive with Terry’s Tours and Charter bus to visit the Railway Museum and Tourist Information Centre.

Featuring major stars like old favourites Greg Kinnear, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Clare Danes, BRIGSBY BEAR was created and written by comic genius Kyle Mooney who is a director for Saturday Night Live, and also stars in this wonderful movie as the lead character, James Pope.

This was Terry’s Birthday Bash Tour which lasted for seven days and included Nudgee, Hervey Bay, Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Mount Morgan, Fern’s Hideaway, Gin Gin and home.

Most, if not all of us born after 1950 (TV came to Oz in ‘56) can remember a favourite TV show that completely mesmerised us as kids. One show that we loved and were completely devoted to... But what if that one show was created and made just for one child? You.

When asked how old Terry was. “ It changes, however we think he’s 70.” was the reply! Sorry Terry.

James is a superfan. He is obsessed with BRIGSBY BEAR, a kids’ show he’s been following religiously his entire life... And he’s now a fullgrown young man. The show’s a bit goofy and nerdy and cutesy, but it has become more complex as he has grown; informing him about life, educating him, providing a moral compass. James’ parents are super-protective to the extreme point of insulating him from the outside world.

The visitors hailed from the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Burlie Heads and for some of them this was the 30-34th trip with Terry! “He treats us all like his babies, picks us up from our doors and drops us back home again”, the ladies commented.

Then suddenly, one traumatic night out of nowhere James’ comfortable, protected, sheltered world is turned completely upside down. Throughout the aftermath, the often hilarious upheavals that follow, James clings to his security blanket BRIGSBY BEAR to help him get through.

On Tuesday the 12th February, eleven visitors including Rick from Bayview, Yeppoon joined us for a tour and morning tea.

But then James learns that his show has been cancelled...Oh no! What’s he going to do? Rather than curl up into a little ball and hide, James decides that “the show must go on...”

The group included visitors from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Bundaberg. All were staying at Bayview Towers and had been touring the region including our ‘lovely and friendly’ town of Mount Morgan.

There is, of course much more to James’ and BRIGSBY’S story but to say more would give it away so the lips are sealed. Suffice to say that you may well fall in love with this little movie. You’ll certainly laugh and maybe shed a tear, captured by this funny, offbeat, heartfelt and uplifting take of the healing and redeeming powers of creativity and self-belief. BRIGSBY BEAR is just short of an hour and a half long and is rated PG (PG 13 is probably more accurate). Loved it!

A ‘must see’ at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum is the Smithy which has just been upgraded to include a new cement walkway and cover for visitors to stay out of the weather and shaded whilst viewing. The Smithy contains the tools used by Charles Hempseed and Rogers. Their smithy was located in Dee Street in 1921 and moved to Morgan Street in 1926. They then bought side-by-side houses in Rockhampton and moved their business, using both back yards to set up the business. After retiring they donated the tools and equipment to the Museum.

Ride Bell Whistle

BAREE BLURB

15.

BY

Chris Grange

Well it’s back into full swing at Baree after the Christmas Hiatus. Hope everyone had a safe and relaxing break.

By Graeme Meade

I was sorting through a box of items and came across this whistle; it bought back some old memories to me. As a child I remember going to the railway station, even though the big steam train scared me with its hissing, puffing, and smoke everywhere, I can still remember the smell. But the best thing was the man with the whistle, because that meant the train would be leaving. The loud shrill whistle followed by the “All aboard” yell that seemed to go on forever, then the slow “puff puff puff” that got faster and faster as the train moved away ... It’s no wonder people these days love those old steam trains. Next was the “postie”. He (it was only men then) would come along on a push bike with bags of mail attached to it. If you got any mail he would blow his whistle, so as little kids we would run out to get the mail for mum. I think sometime in the 1980’s posties stopped blowing the whistles, because the noise upset some people and dogs. About then they started using motor bikes, which really annoyed the dogs!! This is a P Whistle made by Rider & Bell, a Sydney company. Rider & Bell is believed to be the only whistle manufacturer in the southern hemisphere. The company began manufacturing the original postman’s whistle in the 1920’s and during World War II it became an army issue whistle and date stamped. This whistle has “Aussie Thriller” stamped on to the top, this stamp was in use after WWII, so it is hard to date them. This one dates from the 1960s, because the owner managed a swimming pool at the time. She used it to blow at the naughty kids and at the end of the day would blow the whistle and call “all out” to signal closing time Whistles are collectable. These whistles are not very valuable but examples engraved with a company name could be worth more.

During the break we were very saddened by the loss of our longest serving member Daisy Hempseed and one of our regular patrons Kathy Hubner. Our sympathies go out to their loved ones. The Baree Monthly Markets are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month. The lucky winner of the fruit & vegie raffle was Jeff White from Bouldercombe and the lucky stall holder was Blue Care. There was a variety of stalls including plants, home-made sewing, knitted and crochet items and cooking, bric-abrac, sauces & relishes, Avon Products for purchase and order, honey and a sausage sizzle and drinks stall. Tea and coffee is available for purchase from the kitchen. There is something for everyone!! Our CD Night which is a mix of Line Dancing, Old Time and New Vogue Dance was held on Saturday 17th February (also one of the Committee Member’s Birthday but we won’t give your age away Pam). Although small in number, patrons enjoyed the evening and a lovely supper supplied by the Committee. The cost for these nights is only $5 p/p so if you feel like a night of dancing or just want to listen to the lovely music and enjoy some company, you will be made very welcome. Our next themed dance (Easter) will be held on Saturday 31st March. There will be Lucky Door, prizes for the Best Easter Bonnet for ladies, gentlemen and children, also a Tombola Raffle with some great prizes and of course a delicious supper will be included in the entry price. Keep an eye out for flyers around town.
