Facelift for Arts & Crafts Building

The talented and hardworking members of our local Mount Morgan Arts & Crafts Group Inc. can’t wait to get to their clubrooms each morning. Especially now that their beloved Welfare Building has had a makeover, with Rockhampton Regional Council contractors about to complete the huge task of painting both stories. The exterior and interior of the building has had a fresh coat of cream paint replacing the original blue colour. The Group’s President Heather Barker commented, “We’re very pleased with the new colour scheme. It’s much brighter and lighter now!”

Pictured hard at work - Louisa Drochmann, Heather Barker, Susan Rowe and Nell Shaw.

The members meet every Tuesday morning for Patchwork, Wednesday morning is devoted to ceramics and Thursday mornings the ‘Care and Share’ group get together. If you would like to learn a new craft while enjoying a cuppa and companionship pay a visit to the Welfare Building in Thompson Avenue, Mount Morgan. You’ll be most welcome.

News From The

Mount Morgan Lorikeets Face In round 5 the Mt Morgan Rugby Union Lorikeets travelled to Moura to face Dawson Valley. So far this year Dawson Valley had a record of 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 bye, leaving them sitting mid table.

By Graeme Meade This is an old drill press; it was used on a property out Wowan way. Originally it was powered by hand, but at some stage it was converted to run on power and used to make fences. I’m told the men would go out to where they were working, tie the drill press to a tree and as they cut the fence posts they would drill the holes in the posts for the wire to go though. So the men were just using the resources that were around them to make the fences, it’s a pity not many of these fences have survived.

For the first time this season Nathan O’Brien was chosen to lead the side firstly due to the ongoing injury to regular Captain Todd Toby and secondly in recognition of the greater level of maturity and leadership he has shown this year after making a permanent move to the number 10 jersey. Mt Morgan received the kick-off and Dawson Valley quickly showed their intent to target the breakdown, pushing the Lorikeets off their own ball and winning a turnover almost immediately. Fortunately, Mt Morgan’s defence was able to scramble and repel the subsequent attack. The Drovers continued to dominate possession in the early part of the game and at times made good metres close to the ruck, despite this they were unable to claim any points during this period.

Eventually Mt Morgan was able to gain a good share of the possession and field position and in contrast to Dawson Valley were able to quickly take advantage when Scrum Half Scott Toby The Buffalo Forge Company was started in 1878, in took a quick tap and crashed over for the first try of the game Buffalo USA, to manufacture blacksmith’s forges. then converted his own try to take a 7-nil lead. The Mount Morgan Lorikeets Rugby Union team, under the Captaincy of Nathan O’Brien, achieved a massive win against Dawson Valley in Moura – 34-7. This bonus win sees Mount Morgan maintain its five-point lead at the top of the ladder on 24 points, with Frenchville and Brothers on 19 points and Biloela on 14 points rounding out the top 4. With three tries and strong kicking as well as some very good defence, Nathan O’Brien was named man of the match.

Mount Morgan CBD vision begins

“Our first step was to bring in all the earthwork equipment, which will be followed by about a month of demolishing the current section,” Cr Rutherford said. “After that we’ll prepare the site, including removing the overhead power lines and reticulating the power underground, and then work on the structures - it will very exciting to see it come to life!

Mount Morgan’s CBD is about to get its long-awaited revitalisation thanks to Rockhampton Regional Council and funding from the State and Federal governments. Minister for Local Government and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner said the Mount Morgan CBD project was a good example of three levels of government working together for the benefit of the local community. “The Palaszczuk Government’s investment of more than $1.4 million in the CBD revitalisation project will support up to 34 jobs for local tradespeople and help cement Mount Morgan as a must see destination for visitors to Central Queensland,” Mr Furner said. “It’s good news for local business and jobs.” Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said work has begun with completion by the end of the year. “This revitalisation has been on the radar for a long time, so the community is absolutely thrilled work has started on their new streetscape,” Cr Rutherford said. “Local residents and visitors will see a total makeover of the CBD’s central median strip thanks to the State Government’s Works for Queensland

Program and the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, along with the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.

“We’ve been working closely with local businesses on what’s happening and of course we’ll keep them and the local community updated on our progress as we move through the project.”

“Their generous support will ensure our town shines with an architecturally-designed arbour for bright Bougainvilleas as well as new shade structures, public furniture, upgraded toilets and a new gazebo giving a very modern look and feel, while maintaining a strong connection to the town’s heritage.”

Residents are advised that the toilets have been closed for refurbishment, however the toilets in the Mount Morgan School of the Arts building are available for use.

State member for Mirani Jim Pearce said the revitalisation project would benefit locals, tourists and the broader Mount Morgan community.

Thank you for your patience while Council revitalises Mount Morgan’s CBD.

“I talked with many locals about their expectations on this project and they’re hopeful it will bring a boost to local businesses, and it’s wonderful to see a town’s heart and soul being renewed to bring more vibrancy to complement the historical charm that currently exists here,” Mr Pearce said. “Small regional towns are bound together by a strong community spirit and the renewed CBD will provide a greater sense of pride and a vibrant place for visitors to sit, relax and stay a little longer to enjoy everything Mount Morgan has to offer as a tourist destination.” Councillor Rutherford said the work would be carried out in stages in the coming months.

One pedestrian crossing will also remain open throughout the duration of the project.

Lives of the First World War – Imperial War Museum, London Article Submitted by: Gerald Cunningham – Author, Photographer, Historian - A Kiwi who lives in New Zealand, who worked in the Mine and the Railways in Mount Morgan during the 1960s.

Mount Morgan High Students Connecting to the Future

During a trip to London last year I spent a day at the Imperial War Museum which is located on the far side of the River Thames from Big Ben and the British Houses of Parliament. For those who have not been to this museum it has a huge display of items connected to both World Wars of the 20th century and one of the largest collections of Victoria Crosses (VCs) in the world. There is also a huge collection of tanks, planes, guns, ammunition, vehicles, uniforms and memorabilia donated by people from all over the world. While at the museum it was explained to me that the Imperial War Museum created an online website, Lives of the First World War, during May 2014. There are some eight million names on this website, which was not meant to be a military monument, but as a record of the toil and sacrifice of those British and Commonwealth soldiers who served in uniform from 1914-1918. The museum’s vision for this website was that it would become a permanent digital record, including photographs, where available, of each and every soldier in the Commonwealth involved in WW1. Where they came from, where and when they enlisted, their date of birth, parents, siblings, occupations, rank, regiment, wounds received and illnesses suffered, plus date, place of death and where buried, if they were killed while on active service. These details are not just restricted to those who were killed in action, but also the life stories of the veterans who returned. Anybody and everybody around the world who owns a computer or laptop, or has access to them, is able to access the website and fill in the details of any relative or any person they might have information on. It is also possible to upload, directly to the website, any family or other photographs held. Sadly, with so many names, there are large numbers of those who served in this terrible war who have little or no information given, or available. The most poignant are those who were killed in action, usually at a young age, where there is no photograph, just a blank space on the website. For anybody interested in creating a record just Google, Lives of the First World War, log in, and start adding information. There is no cost.

Year 7 students from Mt Morgan State High School recently completed a four week Self-Awareness program with CQUniversity’s school outreach team CQUni Connect. The program encourages students to express their dreams for the future; discover their passions and strengths; explore their values; and learn how they can build their resilience. The program aims to introduce students to the first step of career development which is awareness of self. Students in the Year 8 cohort participated in the Occupation Awareness program using comic-book superheros to investigate their career profile; current and future occupations; skills and capabilities for the future workforce; and explored how they can begin shaping their future now. In Week 9 of Term 2, the Year 10 students will have the opportunity to come on-campus in Rockhampton. The on-campus visit gives students the chance to participate in hands-on activities with academic staff and TAFE teachers that provide a glimpse into what to expect down the track. The CQUni Connect team will return to Mt Morgan State High School during term 2 to continue programs with Year 11 and 12 students. At a later stage in 2017 students in Year 9 will complete a school-based program called Navigating Pathways.

The Orange Dot By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review

Ever had something happen in your life that completely changed your whole outlook? Many years ago now I was given a budgie. Well this budgie completely changed my life, my attitude and my appreciation of animals and their intelligence. I wrote this story years ago.

LIVE BY NIGHT is something special. I loved everything about it. The atmosphere, the colours, the style, the feel, the story, the violence, the decadence, the acting and directing...

We must be blessed with the worlds smartest budgie. He names his toys, e.g. ‘Pretty Creature’, and will ask for them by name, “Where’s Billy’s pretty creature?”. If he cannot find the one he wants he will have quite a conversation with you, although you might not always get the answer you expect of him. His vocabulary consists of well over 100 words and believe me, he knows the meaning of most of them and the exact right time to say them.

Not to mention the great photography and locations (I’ll devour pretty-much anything filmed in the New Orleans/Tampa area).

Within minutes visitors would arrive. When my husband asked him how he always knew, he replied “budgie’s psychic!” Now I can honestly say I don’t believe we had ever said the word psychic in front of him, but even so, how did he know when to say it?

This, of course puts him on the outside with everyone; and pretty soon everyone wants Joe’s blood.

Ben Affleck has got to be a bit of a genius really. He wrote the screenplay, directed the movie, played the lead role and coproduced it along with (although he’s not actually in the film) Leonardo Di Caprio.

Hollywood must know it too because lots of big names climbed on-board for this project... Brendan Gleeson , Elle Fanning, “Time to go to bed, Billy’s a little bit tired” would Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and (always good to see...) Chris always be said at his bed time. He stands at the door Cooper; along with an amazing supporting cast as well. of his cage and says “I want to come out!, I want to come out, what time is it? , I want to come out” !, as After his rude awakening to the consequences of ignorant authority, combined with his own personal experiences of he loves to come out for a fly around the house. inadequate and downright dangerous top brass during the This morning he said “You wanted to say something to Great War, Joe Couglin swears to henceforth make his own Billy”, my reply was “ Did I? Kodie’s determination is a cut above the rest

Despite being a young age of 27, Kodie Dodd has already achieved what many only dream of – she’s her own boss; running her own business in a field she loves.

New local business owner, Kodie Dodd

“I moved to Mount Morgan in 2000 with my family and have stayed quite close by since leaving school,” Kodie said.

Kodie is the proud owner of Mane Street Hair Studio – Mount Morgan’s newest business in the Morgan Street CBD.

It’s also the area she met husband, Kyle. “I have known my husband since I moved to the town. We’ve just celebrated being together for ten years and married for two. We have three children together – one boy and two girls.

“I opened the doors during the Golden Mount Festival weekend – which I felt was appropriate as it’s the biggest day of the year for our town and it was a very important day for me,” Kodie said.

“I love the town, not just for my personal connection but its history and the community as well. I’m very excited to have a business here.”

A fully qualified hairdresser, Kodie said opening her own salon has long been a dream, and one she was very excited to turn into a reality.

Mane Street Hair Studio is located at 57a Morgan Street and open Tuesday to Saturday during the following hours:

“This is something I’ve wanted since I was about 15,” Kodie said. “Growing up, my mum was a hairdresser so I’ve always had an interest in hairdressing but I remember as part of high school work experience I spent a couple of weeks working in a salon. That’s when I knew hairdressing was for me,” she said. “I noticed the salon was empty so I enquired about it and thought I would give it a go. “Everything just fell into place and I feel so grateful for the opportunity to do this.” It’s been a decision that has already been well supported by the community. “I’ve been overwhelmed with the support received from the community and previous salon’s clients,” Kodie said. “I am booked out a week in advance at this stage which is wonderful and have extended my hours to allow further availability.”

Along with a new look, Kodie brings with her years of training and a Certificate III in Hairdressing.

Tuesday and Wednesday: 9am – 2pm Thursday: 12 noon – 8pm Friday: 9am – 2pm Saturday: 9am – 12 noon

“I enjoy all aspects of hairdressing – cutting and colouring and I really enjoy styling,” Kodie said.

To make a booking, phone 4938 1261 during operating hours, or alternatively message Mane Street Hair Studio via Facebook.

“I also offer hot towel treatments with all my colour services, along with a relaxing scalp massage. Facial waxing and tinting services are also available.”

Walk ins are also welcome however bookings are preferred to avoid disappointment.

Kodie also has some impressive accolades under her belt, including a well sought after training award. “I entered a session styling competition through the training academy I was with. The theme was natural disasters in which I chose wildfire We had to create an image that was magazine worthy. I received 1st place which was absolutely amazing.”

The official opening of Mane Street Hair Studio followed a week of renovations to the building’s interior, which Kodie said was a family affair. “I have added my own personal touch to the salon with the help of two great guys – my husband and Dad,” Kodie said. The salon comes fitted with a front desk crafted by Kodie’s Dad, Gavin, as well as a new colour scheme and back wall fittings.

Although new to the local business circuit, Kodie is a familiar face in the local area.

Kodie’s winning entry.

Mysterious portrait found at Masonic Temple Follow-up story by Catherine McIntosh

In the last edition of the Argus, we brought you an article about the ongoing restoration work at the Mount Morgan Masonic Temple. A new portrait collection of early Mount Morgan Freemasons, dating back to the 1880s, decorates the freshly painted foyer. One of the portraits (pictured) has a particularly unusual story. Sydney resident, Catherine McIntosh, who helped put together the portrait collection, tells the story below. Her great-grandfather, Mr. Stubbs, was an early Mount Morgan Lodge member. “The discovery coincided with my visit to the Mount Morgan Masonic Temple in November 2016. A large weathered portrait was found by Mount Morgan Freemason, Barry Batchelor, beside a cupboard in the Masonic Temple. It must have been there unnoticed for decades, gathering dust and slowly disintegrating. It was framed in tough grey cardboard, cardboard you don’t see nowadays. There was no pane. While the image had almost vanished, it exuded a presence. I was intrigued by the ghost-like appearance of the Freemasons. When and where was the portrait taken? What was the name of the lodge? Who were these men? They did not leave any clues.

The portrait survived the plane journey in hand luggage to Sydney, with a stop-over in Brisbane (and back). Afterall, it was a survivor.

The digital restoration was like no other. Pairs of legs of various Freemasons were copied onto other Freemasons in the front row. Three of the Freemasons on the right were deleted because they were so damaged. The curtain on the left was duplicated on the right. The background and tiled floor were revived. Searching for answers, I showed Dr Ray Boyle, a long-term member of the Mount Morgan Lodge, the restored digital version. He said that the jewels worn by the members provided some clues about the name of the lodge. From the turn of the twentieth century, several Masonic lodges operated in Mount Morgan. The Past Masters’ jewels worn by the second and third Brethren from the left in the front row indicate they may have been members

of either Perseverance or Dee Lodge. They were not officers of the Mount Morgan Lodge, whose jewels were much more elaborate. The photography studio was ‘Chas. Hill, Mount Morgan’. Research shows that Chas. Hill, Mount Morgan was not a colonial photography studio. I could, therefore, rule out the nineteenth century. By comparing the dates of some other portraits taken at this studio, including Stubbs family portraits, I estimated a date between 1910 and the 1920s. The original portrait is back at the Masonic Temple, along with a digitally restored copy. Now written on the back of the original is: A Masonic Lodge in Mount Morgan c. 1920 (Chas. Hill, Mount Morgan). The digital version is captioned with the story of its discovery, restoration and possible identity and date. Unlike today’s mass production of images, old photographs are rare and irreplaceable. Each one has a soul of its own. A few details on the back of an old picture, such as a name, date and/or place, would be useful for someone who may find it in the future. In some instances, an old photo will find you”. Another breakthrough was the photographer’s little blue round label glued to the thick cardboard frame (pictured).
