CAROLS HERALD CHRISTMAS

Carols in St Mary’s herald Christmas

AROUND THE RIDGES

The 2019 Carols in St Mary’s held on Sunday, 1 December heralded the start of the 2019 Festive Season. The evening started with light refreshments in the Church Hall which was followed by the Carols. Long-term contributors - Bouldercombe Singers and Christine Schirmer (pictured above) provided the choral and bagpipe entertainment for the evening. Uniting Church organist, Mrs Jean Morgenstern provided the music as well as reading the origins of the Carol - Silent Night. Cannon Val Gribble gave the Christmas address in which she spoke about what Christmas means to her and about peace.

A new icon now stands on the outskirts of Mount Morgan, near the Silver Wattle Caravan park in the form of a 150-year old windmill.

“I believe that if we lived at peace with each other then most of the problems of our world would be solved,” she said.

The windmill was erected near the Silver Wattle Caravan Park by David and Debi Brant. Congratulations David and Debi!

In her address, she reflected on the countries that she had visited where the absence of peace had brought so much tragedy and sadness.

***

“We can talk about the true meaning of Christmas. Bringing peace starts with us and from a song which has nothing to do with Christmas, but with words we can take to heart - From little things, big things grow”.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc has assisted Mount Morgan Post Office owner, Ian Traynor to have the tree in the Post Office yard decorated and lit up for Christmas through liaising with Council on his behalf. In the past the tree has been decorated, providing a central focus for the town’s business precinct.

Tree Festival delivers the Spirit of Christmas It’s time to untangle the tinsel, dust off the decorations and crank up the carols, all in readiness for the 2019 Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival. Event organisers, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development [MMPAD] are excited to continue the tradition of this delightful experience and encourages local businesses, organisations and schools to get behind this magical event. The highest number of trees in the past has been 147 and MMPAD hopes to level this number this year – and it is hoped that the trees will be more dazzling than ever. “The evening promises to be a fun-filled family night that aims to deliver the spirit of Christmas to the community,” Mr Steinberger said. “MMPAD members have worked

tirelessly to ensure traditions such as the Christmas Tree Festival, which was started in 2003, continue to take place,” he said. “This year has been a busy one for the organisation and successful fundraising events including the Hill Sprint weekend and the Troy Cassar-Daley concert have made it possible for MMPAD to continue the free amusement rides, and to offer prizes for the Christmas Lights Competition, children’s colouring-in competition and the Christmas Tree competition,” Mr Steinberger said. The Christmas Tree Festival will be held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts on Friday, 6 December. Doors open at 5 pm. Amusements rides will operate between 5.30 – 8.30 pm and there will be five different attractions for children of all ages to enjoy. The formal part of the evening will start at 6.45 pm with the

2019 Buy Local Draw, followed by the announcement of the Christmas Lights and colouringin competitions winners. The winner of the Best Decorated Tree (Commercial and nonCommercial) and Most Innovative Tree will also be announced on the night. Santa Claus will also be there with lollies for the children. The evening will also boast market stalls, with a wide variety of gifts on offer, live entertainment (including the inaugural public performance of the Mount Ukes) with a barbecue tea and refreshments available. If you wish to enter a decorated tree, bring your entry to the School of Arts on Thursday, 5 December (between 10 am – 4 pm) and Friday, 6 December (by midday). Trees can be collected on Saturday, 7 December between 9 am and 12 noon.

Entries are open for Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador 2020! Would you like to help represent all of the fun and excitement of the Rockhampton Agricultural Show in 2020? THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review ANGEL HAS FALLEN

determined to rescue POTUS at any cost.

By far the best of the three in our opinion. The first major scene subsequent to the opening sequence of ANGEL HAS FALLEN brought to mind George W’s famous words “shock and awe”. It was certainly awesome, but more than that it was shocking in that if this was an accurate depiction of the capabilities of today’s military technology, then the genius, the selective accuracy, the speed and lethal efficiency leaves us standing defenceless and dumbfounded in wide-eyed amazement.

In the second movie, LONDON HAS FALLEN (2016), the UK Prime Minister has died and world leaders have gathered in London for the funeral. A perfect opportunity has presented itself for a major global terrorist network to take out as many as possible, if not all of the world leaders present. We follow Secret Service agent Mike Banning’s efforts to protect President Asher and keep him safe.

We live in a world that has never been healthier, safer or more comfortable (speaking historically and generally), but it can still be a scary place as we see in ANGEL HAS FALLEN. The first of THE FALLEN film series, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (2013) sees the White House attacked and captured by a North Korean terrorist organization, with President Asher (Aaron Eckhart) being taken hostage. Disgraced former Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is

With this, the third FALLEN film, ANGEL HAS FALLEN (2019) it is the President’s guardian angel, Secret Service agent Mike Banning (yes, still Morgan Freeman who has progressed from Speaker of the House to the Prez and Gerard Butler) who finds himself under the gun. An assassination attempt on the new President Allan Trumbull (Morgan) (curiously, though untrue, Trumbull is the perfect hybrid blend of TRUMP and TURNBULL) sees his trusted confidant and primary protector Secret Service agent Mike

DEE RIVER OLDIES Dee River Oldies members enjoyed their christmas lunch last Friday. A big thank you to the caterer, musician and members for making the day very enjoyable. Members have been kept busy this year with meetings, morning teas and bus trips. This Friday, 6 December 2019 we will have a cake stall and a christmas tree on display at the Christmas Tree Festival at the School of Arts. Doors open at 5.00 pm. On Wednesday, 15 January 2020 there will be a morning tea for members to catch up for the New Page 6

Banning (Gerard) wrongfully accused and taken into custody. Mike must find a way to escape, outsmart the FBI and evade his own agency to uncover the truth, clear his name, keep his family safe from harm, find the real threat to the President and save the country from imminent danger. But no pressure... ANGEL HAS FALLEN moves from great to grand for giving us back two all-time favourites, Nick Nolte and Tim Blake Nelson; so good to see them again. The rating in the USA is R, but in Oz, more fittingly it is MA15+ for “strong violence”. Running time is just two hours of non-stop, bounce-up-and-down excitement. ANGEL HAS FALLEN... Loved it! (Further FALLEN films and a TV Series are in development.)

Year. It starts at 10 am at St Mary's Hall, Gordon Street, Mount Morgan. Existing and new members are welcomed. Come along and enjoy a cuppa and a catch up. From February 2020 monthly meetings will be held on the third Tuesday at 2.00 pm and the morning teas will be on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10.00 am Morning Teas will start with a guest speaker in February and March will be a musical morning tea. Have a great Christmas break catching up with friends and family. The Steering Committee

Pride in Your Town Last edition we presented sections of the Morning Bulletin dated 7 June 1950, regarding the Mount Morgan Celebrations. We wish to continue with more of that printed word especially the following section. Local Committee. The Back to Mount Morgan committee comprises the following ladies and gentlemen. Mr. G C Mullins, J G Carmody, F L Golding, C Hempseed, R Long, G Furney, J Meecham, J Passmore, W Brooks, Sargent B G Topp, S Beezley, T Peers, Rev Father Bourke, R Guy, J Fogarty, W Brinston, W Born, E Ford, R C Bond, and ladies Miss Eileen Murphy, Daphne Ryan, Jan Young, Bette Broom, Nessie Chardon, Mrs. Fowler, and Mrs. Rowe Please note how many were on that Committee and now today we are having difficulty getting enough volunteers to form a committee so that this wonderful Festival will continue in the future for many more years. Perhaps the above may inspire some locals to put their hands up and volunteer. Let us hope so. Now another early article about our town; “The Happiest Days of

our lives”. By Mrs. Nellie P. Fisher (nee Gray) Melbourne. ‘The invitation to write an article on early Mount Morgan school days stirred deep into my memory. I had visions, kaleidoscope- like, of innumerable incidents, bright, colorful and happy. The background is a grand old pepperina……jacarandas in bloom, giving the impression of a blue mist. And Poinciana’s (to us it was always the punch-i-anna) with its wealth of crimson flowers. A beautiful sight, yet the powers that be decided that a bank building was preferable. Arriving in December in 1888 from England, we had to accept the designation “Chummies.” It being school holiday time, we had plenty of opportunity to inspect the track that led to the school. Entering the Company’s paddock near Ken Yen Kee’s we were soon lost to view among the trees to emerge at another opening in the fence opposite the School in Morgan Street. Came the day for the re-opening of School. Leaving home with a sister, all went well until the gate was reached and then I acquired sudden and strong objections to going to school.

My wails brought forth Diana Shannon, an assistant teacher and I was gently led into the school to find the seats occupied by many others in the same plight as myself. Our freedom was ended, school days had begun. One of my first impressions was of the pictures that decorated the wall. One was a Chinese Mandarin and the other a forest tree with snakes coiled round the branches. Then there was the school clock at which we gazed as we sang; “See the neat little clock in the Centre it stands….” When I moved to the middle room the teachers were Mr. Weir and Mr. McKenzie (pupil). How interesting were those first primers with the large print, pictures and abbreviated sentences. There also was the repeating of tables by class and the writing lessons. The move up to the long room was an occasion for some apprehension for there you came under Mr. Weir, a little man with a big voice and rather a terror in the eyes of the boys, but on closer acquaintance one found him as a teacher a rather agreeable man.’ To be continued next edition. Think clean and be tidy

We are also selling tickets in Christmas hams outside of IGA on Tuesday or Fridays. The MMRAI looks forward to your support. One of our happier moments was when Mount Morgan Rodeo Association members were able to present the Year 12 students with money towards their Formal. This was done well in advance of the formal. The money was a thank you for the students’ assistance with Rodeo events. Keep it country! HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED How things have changed since I was a kid. This time of the year was the best. First we had Guy Fawkes’ night. My sister and I would go house to house singing “Guy Fawkes Guy, stick him on a lamp post and there let him die. Christmas is coming the ducks are getting fat – please put a penny in the old man’s hat. If you haven’t got a penny, a half penny will do. If you haven’t got a half penny God bless you.” Then the bonfire and crackers began. Breakup day at the Calliungal North School. What a day to look forward to. Mr Connell was the head teacher and Mrs Chenry the teacher. We had a sports day with cash prizes. The top sportsman was at that time Glen Crust from Moongan. I wasn’t a sports person. We had cordial, cakes and biscuits and later for lunch more cordial and minced corn meat and onion sandwiches

followed by watermelon. Everyone lined up and got a bag full of goodies – Two bob, Christmas fruit and lollies.

On Christmas Eve we would put on our best clothes and get some money to do a bit of shopping. Nothing was done before hand. We had to make our own decorations, wrap gifts and cards. At Nana and Pops place they would have a big shear oak tree, and we had Santa Claus, Reg Buckton was the man! There was always a mob of us. Everyone got a small present. Then we would have a sing song. Nana would play her mouth organ. My song was always the same song – “Old man goanna ran up a tree, old man goanna isn’t he a fright his face would keep you awake all night”. Everyone would thank my great Uncle Dave because he had paid for everything when he came home from the bush where he

was the manager of Besch’s cattle property. He was a survivor of World War I - Light Horse Brigade, and a true gentleman. On boxing day we would catch the train to Yeppoon. A shout out to anyone who remembers Bamboo Bill who lived out near the show grounds in a small hut. He always wore white clothes and a white jungle hat. Also Mis or Mrs Hennigan who used to ride into town on her draught horse. She always tied it up to the hitching rail outside what was the Commonwealth Bank in Morgan Street. I remember when Gelignite Jack came to Mount Morgan. He would always go to Stock’s Garage. He was a big man, in a black car that would carry a case of gelignite in his car. Does any have any memories of this? Article submitted by Mrs Ros Wanstall.

UNIQUE AND COLOURFUL WEDDING FOR MOUNT MORGAN On Saturday, 30 November, I was fortunate enough to photograph the marriage of Rikki Gambin and Michelle Stonier, now Mrs Gambin.

The ceremony was carried out by Pastor Owen Kurth. It was a colourful affair with Michelle’s Bridesmaids dressed in all the colours of the rainbow, while Rikki and his Best Man, Matthew Fox, dressed as Prince Harry and Prince William. There were approximately 80 guests, with standing room only in the Mount Morgan Pentecostal Church (Dee Bowls Club) and quite a few people standing outside. We were granted permission to use the Mount Morgan Railway Station and Visitor Information Centre and gardens as the backdrop for the official photos. The MMPAD staff were most accommodating, staying back well past their normal closing times. The procession then moved on to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Building for the reception, where things became a lot less formal - suit coats and ties were off and were replaced by a cool drink. Then came the smiling and hugging of friends and family, that had not seen each other in a long time. It was a joyous event. Congratulations to Mrs and Mrs Gambin# Keith Whittaker - Photos and story supplied.

Have something you need printed? or laminated?
