President Mark Brookes said while this year’s ride will raise some money, it wasn’t the purpose of the ride.

“Apart from raising awareness, the rides contribute towards promoting good positive mental health, particularly with men who don’t find it easy to talk about their problems,” Mr Brookes said.

One hundred and 36 riders and motorcycles took part in the ride, as

well 16 pillions, five cars and 11 passengers, which is just slightly bigger than in previous years.

The ride was extended this year to include Biloela and Bajool.

The ride started at 8.30 am on Saturday morning and didn’t finish until late into Saturday

night.

The Grand Hotel contributed to the ride by providing a free lunch for the riders. While in Mount Morgan, the participants had and opportunity to listen to guest speaker, Nick Rayner.

Catchment health is important to the diodiversity of waterways and it’s even more important when the waterway contributes to a town’s supply of H2O. The Upper Dee catchment is located at Struck Oil and has not had very much TLC over the last few decades. As a result of the long term harvesting 4 - 18 March 2020

of timber in the late 19th, early 20th centuries, the Upper Dee catchment area has become silted and been subject to erosion.

Mount Morgan resident, Tammy Riach is working towards establishing a group in Mount MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

Tammy is arranging for guest speakers to attend the meeting to dicuss the formation of a group of likeminded people to take a proactive approach to improving the catchment area.

Remedial action such as landform structure creation, vegetation planting and weed control are a few ways in which catchment areas can be enhanced.

FESTIVAL FEVER

The Sabaya Belly Dancers always make the Festival more colourful with their vibrant costumes.

Golden Mount Festival Fever has hit Mount Morgan with the 2020 Golden Mount Festival about two months away.

This year the committee will bring back the Junior Gold Dig which was put on hold in 2019.

There will be a range of entertainment throughout Morgan Street on Saturday including the band Doghouse.

The 44th Golden Mount Festival will provide entertainment and events for the whole family, including the popular Running the Cutter, Golden Mount Festival Procession, Big Dam Breakfast, Barbecue and movie night at the No. 7 dam.

Exciting times for the 2020 Golden Mount Festival, the Rockhampton Reginal Council has approved the grant for this year’s festival. This grant has been received for the past four years, under the now defunct Iconic Events Program. The hard working committee can now move forward knowing their plans are falling into place.

This grant is very helpful, but we are still looking for sponsors to help out. Any businesses interested is sponsoring an event, eg Running the Cutter, or a smaller event please let us know.

On the subject of helping out, we are looking for people to help out during the festival weekend, there are many jobs that need to be done, so if you can help out for an hour or two please let us know.

We have sent out emails to previous stallholders, some bounced back to us, people move on or we may have missed a letter in some addresses. If you would like the stall forms they can be found on our website or email us and we can send them to you.

The Golden Mount Festival was first conducted under this banner in 1977 and was an offshoot of the Back to Mount Morgan Week.

The Festival has changed over the years, but the committee ensures that the popular and iconic events such as Running the Cutter and the Gold Dig are still on the festival program.

The 2020 Golden Mount Festival procession theme is Past, Present and Future and will provided plenty of scope for float entrants to use their imagination.

Some of the past themes have included Reach for the Stars, Flower Power and the Magic of Movies, Music and Fashion, it will be interesting to see how this year’s theme is interpreted.

Black Gold reprint set to intrigue In 1853 Charles and William Archer in company with a black boy leading a pack horse, left their sheep property, Coonambula, in the Burnett District of Queensland and rode out into unexplored territory seeking fresh pastures.

They passed the newly-taken-up Leith-Hay property of Rannes, just below the junction of the Don and Dee rivers, and headed north. What they saw before them excited them intensely.

Every now and then, a book that has gone out of print will be reprinted - this is the case with Cyril Grabs’ book, Black Gold and Intrigue which Central Queensland Company, Coorooman Press has reprinted in time for the launch in Mount Morgan on Saturday, 2 May. The book will be launched by the author’s son, Glen Grabs at the Mount Morgan Library at 10 am.

Black Gold and Intrigue is the story of Mount Morgan, the greatest single mountain of gold ever discovered. It is the story of the town and the company of the same name and of the working men and women who turned it into a familiar name on the Stock Exchanges of the world in the early 1900s. It is also the story of a small group of men whose influence reached as far as the great oilfields of Persia, and who were indirectly instrumental in the victory of the Allies in World War One. Mount Morgan celebrated its centenary in 1982. Behind it lies a complex history of dedication, intrigue, hardships, and fortunes won and lost.

Following is an extract from Gold, Black Gold and Intrigue by Cyril Grabs published in the 2020 edition by Coorooman Press.

The land was a pastoralist’s dream. They followed the course of the Dee as it made a great looping ‘S’ turn near the foot of a roughly-timbered ironstone mountain, nearly a thousand feet high, just to the west of the river.

With barely a second glance at it they rode on a few more miles, stopping at the escarpment of the Great Divide. There before them, stretching away to the ocean, was a view the like of which they had Charles noted in his journal: Upon topping the Range a most astonishing view lay beneath us.

Through a large and apparently open valley — bounded by Tabletopped Pyramidal and Domite mountains, with here and there fantastic sandstone Peaks — a large river wound its way to the sea. We supposed the river to be the Dawson and Mackenzie joined, and the sea before us to be Keppel Bay. The next day they found their way down off the range and explored a fine freshwater lake.

The Archers two years later took up ‘Gracemere Station’ there, a few miles from where the village of Rockhampton was soon to grow.

In the early 1860s one William Mackinlay was appointed headstockman on that part of the Calliungal which was known as the heifer run. Here some of the ‘young stuff’ were sent to keep them from the main herds until it was time for them to be let loose with the station bulls.

When Mackinlay first came to this remote part of Calliungal, called ‘Box Flat’, with his wife Mary, his daughter Minnie was quite small and her young brother Billy not much more than a baby. Mary had no misgivings about coming to live in this distant place with her husband for she knew he was a good, hardworking, reliable man who didn’t drink and he had no time for those who did.

Their home was rough but no worse than others on outlying selections. The split-slab walls were strong and well-plastered with reddish clay between the chinks to keep out the weather.

The Aborigines who had for centuries stripped the bark from the great blue or river gums to build gunyahs or canoes were only too willing to supply this easy-to-obtain building material for the white men. The going rate was a shilling and a half plug of treacley black ‘baccy’ for a good, broad five-foot sheet, which was then laid in the sun and weighted with stones to be flattened. When dry and properly overlapped the sheets made a good, watertight roof that lasted for years.

When Mackinlay had the ‘gold bug’ he was unbearable until he got it out of his system. He walked the hills around Mount Victoria, Scabby Mountain and the Ironstone Mountain the Archers had previously seen, until he knew every boulder. He prospected up and down the Dee, the Nine Mile and Oakey Creek, and found specks of yellow in any number of places.

Somewhere, he knew, there was a lode that he’d one day find and then the Mackinlays would be rich and he’d build a fine house for his family. Often he dreamed of finding a pot of gold hidden somewhere on Ironstone Mountain.

The rugged peak of reddish-black ironstone, overgrown with wattles and dogwood, haunted him.

Movie Review STANDING UP FOR SUNNY Ray Frank “RJ” Mitte 3rd is an American actor, best known for playing Walter “Flynn” White Junior in the global smash-hit series BREAKING BAD (2008 2013). Like his character of the show RJ has cerebral palsy.

Now Mitte gives us a hilarious, powerful and winning performance in STANDING UP FOR SUNNY, a delightfully fresh and funny Australian comedy loaded with brilliant 12- gauge dialogue and sharp andincredibly biting wit.

Travis (Mitte) is a cranky loner with cerebral palsy forced to share a tiny ramshackle Sydney rental with a giant Samoan who is an ever-cheerful, half-cup-full, look-on-the-brightside kind of guy (Italia Hunt).

Travis on the other hand has had so much crap dealt to him in the past that he has reached the point where he no longer takes a backward step. Ever! He has perfected the use of a sharp, acid tongue which arms him with a formidable defensive weapon.

He can get a little carried away at times, and when his anger management issues cause him to lose his maintenance job after lashing out at bullies, Travis ends up in a pub with his Samoan friend tagging along to cheer him up.

There he sees Sunny (Phillipa Northeast), full-time bar attendant and part-time reluctant up-andcoming standup comedienne trying hard to make it through her routine on stage. She is being mercilessly and relentlessly heckled by some unwashed yobbo at the bar who wants to make himself look like a big man by tearing her down, just because him to train Sunny in the art of he can. “the comeback”, and to help her Witnessing this injustice gets overcome her shyness. Naturally Travis’ dander up and in defence sparks ensue - along with a little of Sunny he lets loose on the romance and laughs aplenty. heckler with all the might of his withering sarcasm. The heckler has no shield against this barrage from Travis. The cascade of wit and lethal banter is beyond anything he has encountered before.

STANDING UP FOR SUNNY is well worth the MA15+ rating for “strong coarse language”. It is directed by wonderful Australian actor and comedy whiz Steven Vidler, and it runs for one hour and forty-five minutes.

DEE RIVER OLDIES A big thank you to the members who have supported the Dee River Oldies Group by coming along to the morning teas, meeting and bus trip. Getting our members out and about is our focus and in the heat we know the effort that it takes.

At our February morning tea we had a guest speaker from the Wowan/Dululu Multi-Purpose Centre.

It was a very informative morning, letting the members know what they have to offer in our community.

Division 2 (Neil Fisher), 3 (Tony Williams), 4 (Ellen Smith), 5 (Cherie Rutherford) and 6 (Drew Wickerson) look set to be returned unopposed if no further candidates nominate by the closing time of 12 noon, 3 March 2020.

Division 1 (Rose Swadling) and Division 7 councillors (Stephen Schwarten) are retiring from Local Government. These divisions have three and two candidates respectively. The election will be held on Saturday, 28 March 2020. Pre-polling and polling booths will be advised in the next edition of the Mount Morgan Argus.

Sunday, 23 February the AGM was held for the Community Services Club. After addressing opening business, the existing committee were thanked for their efforts, and all positions declared opened. Ladies Open played over 18 holes on Saturday, 15 February – 33 ladies braved the wet weather and a golf course that is still recovering from one of the worst droughts in history. Compulsory “Tee Up” was in place for the event.

Ladies Open Champion – Sarah Antcliff (Yeppoon) – 71 Gross, A-Grade Winner – Nadine Battilana (Yeppoon) – 74 Gross, B-Grade Winner – Pat Buntain (Yeppoon) – 80 Gross and C-Grade Winner – Elaine Jones (North Rockhampton) – 93 Gross.

Various Nett, Nearest the Pin and Long Drive prizes were also played for.

It was good to see many familiar faces and some new ones.

Men’s Open played over 27 holes on Sunday, 16 February – 32 men participated which was down on previous years.

Men’s Open Champion (third annual consecutive win) – Daryl Myles (Wowan), 92 Gross (13 under par), A-Grade Winner – Cory Heslin (Calliope) – 97 Gross, B-Grade Winner – Gavin Cawthray (Miriam Vale) – 113 Gross and C-Grade Winner – Paul Hinchliffe (Wowan) – 121 Gross.

Various Nett, Nearest the Pin & Long Drive prizes were also played for.

ANZAC PARK The Rockhampton Regional Council will be applying for a grant to improve some of the district’s areas of significant importance. I have been asked to collect information from the people of Mount Morgan on what they would to see as something to improve the existing Anzac Park.

I do not know how much money will be allocated but I will take all suggestions on board with the aim of submitting at least three suggestions for council’s consideration. I have already spoken to a couple of Veterans but will have all our Veterans involved in selecting the three suggestions. Please send your suggestions to email; mej31@bigpond.com Mike Johnston.

FROM THE ARCHIVES These photos of the Mount Morgan Brass Band were donated by Mr. Edward ‘Ted’ Bones .

He was in the Southport Scouts Group and they were used as banner bearers for the bands who competed at the Australia and New Zealand Brass Band Championship ,which was held in and around Southport in 1957.His mother took the photos but unfortunately he could not find any information on the band members.

If anyone recognizes or has any knowledge of these band members , the Mount Morgan Historical Museum would be most grateful for this information . These are the original photos taken in 1957 so are a little grainy but we are hopeful that someone will be recognized and we can put names to the people in the photos.

THE BEST MEDICINE Why lawyers should never ask a witness a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small town, prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand – a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs Jones, do you know me?”

Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs Jones, do you know the defence attorney?”

She again replied, “Why yes I do.

I’ve known Mr Bradley since he was a youngster too. He’s lazy, bigotted and he has a drinking problem. “He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he chears on his wife with three different women, one of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.” The defence attorney almost fainted.

The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench, and in a very quiet voice said, “If either of you ask her if she knows me, I’ll throw your sorry butts in jail for contempt!”

Musings of Summer exhibition launches gallery year of talent Mount Morgan No7 Gallery has hit the ground running this year, holding holiday workshops, yoga mornings and a new exhibition opening so far already. The free No7 Art Squad workshops for term 1 have also commenced, giving kids an artistic outlet on Friday afternoons after school at 3.30 pm.

On 17 January, the current exhibition, “Musings of Summer” opened with a wine and nibbles evening. This was well supported with a good turn out of local artists, and visitors from as far away as the Sunshine Coast.

The colourful and bright presentation definitely had a Summer vibe and was well received. A massive shout out to Nicholai von Tonslamann and Tony Widjnya for providing some wonderful entertainment on the evening.

The artist of an entry into the hometown will also need to provide an explanation of the significance of each submission in the relation to the Hometown theme.

“I will be beginning my submission, an homage to an old hut my Grandparent’s built that during my childhood we spent every shearing and crutching season at, and I lived in during my 20’s.

The hut no no longer exists but I will be using saved wallpapers and linos from there. My great

grandparents also lived on the property beforehand, and it has always felt like I belonged there,” she said.

The Gallery also offers Yoga on Tuesday morning’s at 9:30am and Saturday mornings at 6:30am, brought to you by Palmview Yoga and Massage.

The next exhibition will be held for a month and is an all abilities showcase called “This is Me” in collaboration with Carers Australia, and NDIS. In unison, will be a display of No7 Art Squad works.

Preparations are also underway for our Golden Mount Festival celebrations, with commencement of planning for a Friday, 1 May “Hometown” Exhibition Opening.

Gallery owner, Kirra Swain said the “Hometown” Exhibition was for anyone from anywhere, with their art conveying that hometown feeling.

“Generally it is linked to nostalgic memories, notable places and defining moments, Hometown is a personal journey back to where we felt connected, evoking reminders of growing up, life’s ups and downs, and conjures Page 14

Eleven ex-service and community members attended the meeting held on the 22 February 2020. The meeting elected the following members to these positions: President - Gavin McKenzie, Vice President - Ray Story, Secretary - Barry Lollback, Treasurer - Ian Traynor and District Delegate - Ray Story A special visitor for the meeting was Mr Colin Bell the Treasurer from the Wide Bay Burnett District RSL who was very helpful with the running of the meeting and answered a number of questions from the meeting.
