As we have all enjoyed the “Golden Mount Festival” over the week end we thought a word or two from the “Back to Mount Morgan Week” booklet in 1950 indicated the beginning. We have recovered the 1950 Souvenir Booklet of “Back to Mount Morgan June 3rd to June 11th and have printed the Foreword written in that book. The price of the Book was one shilling. The working committee for the Week included so many locals of such diverse careers. There was the deputy Mayor, business men and ladies, local Sergeant of Police, young people from offices, banks and shops, employees of Mount Morgan Limited, accountant Frank Golding and of course Nessie Chardon the hard working secretary. The first page of the booklet reads as follows…. FOREWARD. By way of foreward I would explain that this Booklet does not pretend to be a complete history of Mount Morgan. What has been aimed at is to give a brief history of the Mine, and to recall the people who down the years have been connected with the town and its development, so that their mention will recall to many who are with us at the “Back to Mount Morgan” Commemoration, their own associations with the Company and the town. It is nearly seventy years since the Mount Morgan Mining Co embarked on a career which was to prove a wonder in the mining world, provides a most important chapter in Queensland’s history and exercise the greatest influence on the lives of thousands of people. Mount Morgan has seen a period of unbelievable wealth; it has had days of depression too; but it is fitting that the “Back to Mount Morgan Celebrations’” coincides with a fresh phase in its history. For now, the present and prospective of metals and with the discovery of fresh ore reserves point to a prolonged era of prosperity for the Mine and Township.
stephen.waterson@bigpond.com
With the story of Mount Morgan is associated many names which it is important to quote, but space forbid. However, for the original owners it can be said that the names of the Halls have been handed down to posterity for their generous benefactions, and that of W.K.D’Arcy for Empire service in the development of Persian oil. Of those responsible for the directions of the Mine, the General Managers who stand out in memory of those connected with the Mine will be Captain G.A. Richard and Adam Boyd. Nor must we forget the legend of men and women in humbler spheres, who carried on the work of the Mine and devoted themselves to the affairs of the Town. It is these whom the “Back to Mount Morgan” Committee hope to see at the celebrations and to them we extend a Most Happy Welcome Home. Mount Morgan June 1950 Nessie Chardon.

A mixture of generations banded together to mark this year’s ANZAC Day and honour the 101st anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. The commemorations commenced with a Dawn Service at ANZAC Park, hosted by the Mount Morgan RSL. The event saw faithful supporters from all ages in attendance, each making their way to the service in silence under a still starry sky. The service was presented by Mount Morgan RSL President, Mike Johnston who thanked the community for their presence. Commemorations were continued later in the morning also, with the annual Morgan Street march.

Floating along: Mount Morgan Central’s winning entry
Morgan Street appeared nothing short of a moving movie set at 1.30pm on Saturday, as dozens of local and Regional businesses, organisations and clubs paraded their creativity for the 2016 Golden Mount Festival and its “Magic of Movies” theme. From scallywags of Pirates of the Caribbean, to superheros of DC Comic movies and everything in between, it was no wonder the procession was a programme highlight. Hundreds of Festival goers took their cue to line either side of the CBD as the sounds of Scottish bagpipes filled the air and announced the parade’s commencement. From there it was a roll out of movie characters - on foot, horseback, motorbikes or aboard specially and impressively decked out trucks and utes. “The procession was amazing,” Golden Mount Festival Committee President, Eve-lyn Rogers said.
Silver Wattle’s ‘Man from Snowy River’ inspired float
“It was really great to see so many people who went to great trouble to do up their float,” she said. “We had an increased number of entries in floats this year. It was a theme that inspired a lot of people.” And what would a movie theme be without special movie awards? In line with this year’s theme, the parade included special movie themed competition categories, with winners presented with special look “Oscars” as trophies. “I never thought I would ever get to say ‘and the Oscar goes to …’,” Eve-lyn laughed. “Our overall winners for the procession was the Mount Morgan Central State School for a stunning Pirates of the Caribbean float which also saw them win the Best Fantasy/Horror Cateogory.” Other winners included: Best Non Commercial – Mount Morgan Hospital Best Commercial Float – Silver Wattle Caravan Park Best Movie Character – Red Frog 4 Early Childhood Best Family Kids’ Animated - Marie Maroney Best Science Fiction Action/Western- Mt Morgan Thrive Best Comdey/Romance - Home Support

The procession was amid a full day of fun in Morgan Street during the Festival. Throughout the day, the estimated 3,000+ crowd was kept busy with the variety of street markets, live entertainment and amusement rides on offer, along with the annual favourite programme highlights and iconic competitions. “We were amazed with how many turned out for the event and we are really happy with the positive feedback,” Eve-lyn said on the day wrap up. “We had comments from quite a few that it was one of the biggest and best festivals since 2012 and we had thanks from the performers for being part of an event with an electric atmosphere.” Saturday’s celebrations was the third day of largescale events that the Festival Committee hosted. The event officially kicked off on the Thursday evening with a Wine and Cheese evening and continued with a Talent Quest on Friday evening. Saturday’s festivities were followed with a big breakfast on Sunday morning, a family fun night and fireworks on the Sunday night and the inaugural Festival Ambrose Tournament at the Mount Morgan Golf Club on Monday.

It’s a relay race where a billycan is used as the baton and quick drinking is just as important as quick feet. It’s a competition like no other and it again attracted a huge crowd during the weekend’s Golden Mount Festival. Steeped in tradition, the race is derived from the town’s booming mining days – when young lads were given the task to have miners’ cutters (billy cans) filled at the nearest hotel and race it back to the Mine by the end of their shifts. Of course many things have changed over the years, but a race with a cutter in hand has not. This year small crowds gathered outside each Hotel in town, while the majority of spectators congregated by the Cutter statue in Morgan Street for the programme highlight. The Junior race kicked off after the Festival’s procession, seeing five teams take up the challenge. Downing glasses of soft drink at the end of each leg, it was the Mount Morgan Railway Hotel Team that had a runner back to the Cutter statue first and a cutter of soft drink polished off. The second place winners were the Mount Morgan Junior Rugby Union Team. It was then on to the highly anticipated Senior Race which welcomed an impressive 14 teams – one of the highest for the Festival in recent years. Some even made the trip to Mount Morgan especially for the race – which proved a wise move for two Rockhampton teams. This year’s winners and those to take home the $1,800 prize money was Rocky team The Cutter Cowboys. Coming in at a very close second was last year’s winners, The Rocky Runners.

The Mount Morgan Oval was abuzz with activity on Sunday as hundreds of spectators rounded up for the 2016 Mount Morgan Rodeo. Blaring heat wasn’t enough to stop the crowd of well over 1,000, who headed to the oval for the day’s thrills and spills. “…Take a look out there…” Rodeo announcer Tony Ward’s voice said over the microphone, echoing throughout the oval. “That has to be one of the biggest crowds we have seen here in years.” Their efforts were not met with disappointment. The day offered a full day of daring riding and thrills and spills as some of the Region’s very top riders went head to head. There was bull riding, barrel racing, bareback, saddle bronc and more. “It was the best day we have had so far,” Mount Morgan Rodeo Association President, Barb Gould said. “It was bigger and better than last year and was just terrific to see. There was a massive crowd and to our knowledge everyone enjoyed the day thoroughly. We have had countless positive comments on how it all went.” “I would like to give a special thank you to the volunteers and club members who worked tirelessly to make it happen.” The event was one of two hosted by the Rodeo Association during the Golden Mount Festival weekend. The rodeo was followed with the inaugural Lindi Picnic event at the Newman Oval, welcoming families to a free fun day including traditional games, amusement rides and food.

Full steam ahead for Hunslet restoration
There was a hive of activity around the Hunslet last fortnight. On Wednesday 20th April, restoration work began on the iconic locomotive, with the help of former boiler maker Alan Hill, rail enthusiast Hugh Hartwig and local resident and MMPAD member Greg Mathers - who all generously donated their time and skills to help get this project on track.
Darryl rocks the house down! By local resident, Sean Fox Aussie music legend, Daryl Braithwaite, rocked the house down last Sunday night at the Rockhampton Music Bowl. Daryl joined fellow music veterans Russell Morris, Mental as Anything, Richard Clapton and 1927; not to forget local Rockhampton band Phineas Q.
With a bit of elbow grease and a few laughs along the way, the gentlemen were able to remove the dome and washout plugs and have it ready for inspection the following day.
I was delighted to sit down and chat with the Aussie hitmaker in a special interview.
The inspection was carried out by expect Bernie Watson, who travelled from Mackay especially for the task. It has been 3 years since the Hunslet was last inspected so we weren’t too sure what to expect.
“You go on (the stage) confident because you’ve got songs that people know”, Daryl said.
Bernie performed the inspection on the steam loco throughout the day and it’s expected MMPAD will have his report in the next week or two. “At this early stage it looks as though the boiler will have to be removed from the loco. This will mean that we will require more volunteers for future work,” Project Officer Paul Johnstone said. “We warmly welcome anyone interested in becoming a part of this project. Please pass your details on to the MMPAD office at the Rail Museum.” The week also saw Paul, together with MMPAD President John Steinberger meet with representatives from the Dept. of Transport and Main Roads to discuss a number of items including the feasibility of reopening the old rail corridor between Glen Gordon St and Dairy Creek. A condition report of the track to be used for this is to be carried out this week. Once this report has been finalised MMPAD will then have an indication of the project’s feasibility. Paul said a special thanks goes to all involved in the recent efforts, as well as Wayne McConachy from the Mount Morgan Rural Fire Service who kindly assisted the team with the use of one of the fire trucks to flush out the boiler and prepare it for inspection. “Stay tuned for more updates,” he said. “We anticipate big things ahead.”
Daryl explained that performing now is a lot easier than when he first started out in Sherbet.
“Back in those early days, virtually every song that we played nobody knew”, Daryl added. After finishing his performance, the crowd chanted “Horses, Horses!” as they anxiously waited for Daryl to perform one of his most beloved songs, ‘The Horses’. This prompted Daryl to return to the stage for an encore; still leaving fans wanting more! Daryl says he loves every night that he performs The Horses. The Horses peaked at number one on the Australia Aria Singles Chart in 1991. “And here it is, 25 years on and it is still popular”, Daryl said. Daryl’s many fans wait with bated breath hoping that the legendary singer will return to the region when Rocky Rocks returns in 2017.

by Trish & Greg Mathers 0400591504 We had another interesting creature come into care last week. It was Dusky Moorhen. This lovely bird unfortunately had been hit by a car so I did not manage to get a photo, but it is very similar in appearance to a Purple Swamphen, only about 10cms smaller, with different markings. Whereas the swamphen has the very distinct purple colouring, the moorhen has a dark slate grey body with muddy brown wings. The throat is also a slatey brown colour. The face is bright red, and the beak is red with a very bright yellow tip. Under the tail is white. It has the very long lankey legs and the large feet of a typical wading bird. The Dusky Moorhen is usually found around open water with well vegetated margins, mostly fresh water, however also found in brackish water such as swamps, lakes and estuaries. This is the first one I have seen around this area.
News from the Dee River Oldies At our street stall held on Thursday April 21st, the winner of the Meat Tray was Jill Bryant. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and also the ladies who cooked. On Wednesday April 27th twenty-three of our members enjoyed our monthly Morning Tea in the Anglican Church Hall. Local sport News from the Mount Morgan Golf Club
Recent Championships Wowan Golf Club has hosted their Junior Championships and Ladies Golf Championships the last couple of weekends, and the Mount Morgan Golf Club has been well represented. On Saturday 2nd April, three of our Junior Members competed, and came home with great results. Travis Ireland won the 3 Hole competition, with Cody Brown coming in as Gross Runner Up, and Leon Brown just missing out after a countback. Well done to the boys on such a fantastic effort, and a big thankyou to the Golden Mount Festival Committee for their sponsorship. Last weekend a couple of our Members escaped their children for the Wowan Ladies Golf Championships. Both newcomers to the circuit, Melissa Lee came back with the Nearest to The Pin award, and Kirra Swain was grateful for a couple of Goose Club wins. We won’t mention her score! A great fun day was had, and friendships forged with our neighbouring club.
Golden Mount Festival Ambrose Tournament The inaugural Golden Mount Festival Ambrose Tournament was played on Monday with over 30 people registered to play. There were a lot of laughs, some fantastic hits and of course there can only be one winner. This year Barry Stapleton and Alan White took out the trophy. Well done Guys.
Lorikeets’ first game of 2016 By Wayne Alden Saturday 30 April saw the Mount Morgan Lorikeets Rugby Union side kick off the 2016 season with a home game against Dawson Valley Drovers. The day was a big occasion for the club, being the first showing of the new and improved facilities. The new shaded area in front of the canteen, the grandstand and bench seats and the new shade marquees were all well utilised and appreciated. Thanks to the efforts of the Rockhampton Regional Council Parks and Gardens staff the field itself was looking the best it has in some time, which provided a great backdrop for the improvements made to the goal posts (taller and better uprights) and the scoreboard (repairs and a new metal front to allow the use of magnetic numbers). The ground and facilities were a great testament to the hard work of the MMRU committee and volunteers and to the skills of the local tradespeople who have worked there over the previous months. The match itself was an exciting if somewhat scrappy affair; it was very close throughout with neither team able to gain any ascendancy. After gaining and relinquishing the lead several times in the match, Mt Morgan held a slender 5 point lead with only a couple of minutes remaining. However thanks to some strong running through tired defenders followed by a big push in a 5 metre scrum, Dawson Valley was able to score an equalising try with a kick to come. The conversion looked as though it was on target but fortunately for Mt Morgan landed just short, leaving the scores equal at 24 all. Overall the day was very successful and was well supported by both local Mt Morgan fans and visiting Dawson Valley fans. The Lorikeets’ next game is against Frenchville Pioneers to be played in Yeppoon at 2pm on Saturday 7th May and the next home game is the 21st May at 3pm against Gladstone.

AIRCA visit Mount Morgan The Aboriginal & Islander Community Resource Agency Aged Care (AICRA) offer support services for Rockhampton, Mount Morgan, Caves, Gracemere, Emu Park, Yeppoon and Keppel Sands. On Friday the 29th April 40 visitors and support workers made the trip to Mount Morgan to tour our Railway Museum and enjoy a light lunch. Administration officer Fredrika Bickey said: “Currently we have about 70 participants on our books between the two programmes we offer. Our offices are in East Street and Lakes Creek Road Rockhampton”. AICRA Coordinator Leonie Bickey said this was their second trip to Mount Morgan. Last time they visited the Historical Museum. The guests were entertained by Jim Lynch with a couple of songs by Sharon Mann. All the visitors enjoyed the morning and the memories of yesteryear rail, especially Des Pickering (pictured) who was a Train Driver in Rockhampton.
MG’s in the Mount With some of our members headed off to Airlie Beach for the long weekend, others decided to take up the invitation from the Golden Mount Festival committee and travel up to Mount Morgan to take in a view of what takes place during the festival. We were pleasantly surprised by the large number of stalls in the main street of Mount Morgan and also got to view the quality of the entertainment by the Rockhampton Line Dancers, Belly Dancers, and Pipe Band. At 1:15 pm we gathered along with members of other car clubs in a huge line up of well-designed and coloured floats, supported by a large contingent of individuals dressed up in all sort of period costumes and outfits. With the parade starting on time at 1:30 pm, that took us along the both sides of the main street being cheered on by thousands of onlookers that lined the street and beyond. After the procession, Rosco James took us on a trip up to where the Telstra Towers are located - that gave us a great view of Mount Morgan township, the mine and dam. A view that we will have to take again in 2017. The Bouldercombe Pub was a popular stop on the way home as there were members from other clubs there enjoying the hospitality of the pub.
General Interest
The sickle or the scythe By Graeme Meade from Collectables on East I have noticed that people, especially younger ones, call a Sickle a Scythe or a Scythe a Sickle. These days these things are usually found in a museum. A scythe is about 1.8m tall with a couple of handles, attached to a steel blade. It’s the thing the “grim reaper” carries around and was made popular in an advertising campaign in 1987. It was used mostly for reaping crops or mowing grass, it’s definitely easier mowing the lawn with a Victor. A sickle has a short handle and is about 40 cm long, the steel is curved. It’s a well-known symbol of the former Soviet Union - a hammer and sickle was used on the flag, to symbolise a workers paradise, maybe. I had the opportunity to help clean out a shed on a nearby property- the son of one of the original owners’ started work as an apprentice at The Mine in the early 1900s. There were lots of tools there that belonged to him. The most interesting thing there, to me, was a very old scythe. The wooden handle is 158 cm tall, with 2 wooden handles attached by a metal clamp. The curved steel blade is about 75 cm long. There is a stamp in it, it’s hard to make out, but looks like “W Tyzack, Sons Steel Works Sheffield”. W. Tyzack and Sons started up around 1850, they more or less traded under that name until the 1930s. From the 1880s they exported plough blades, harrow discs and many other steel items to Australia. I guess that my scythe would have arrived in the Mount Morgan area well over 100 years ago. It would have been very hot work in summer time, using it to cut hay or keeping the grass down. The scythe still works, I cut some of the long grass out the back with it; it needs sharpening.
