History & Reflections
Pride in your Town
Amazing what treasures can be found when doing the end of the year cleanout. The photo at page bottom is one of those treasures. It is a photo of the Mount Morgan Technical College which was opened on the 24th April 1909 by the Hon. William Kidston, Premier of Queensland.
The College like many other solid buildings in town was built with Mount Morgan bricks and was built for apprentice training to save them the journey to Rockhampton. After a few years, in 1912 the building became the Mount Morgan State High School as we know it today and of course has received a number of major additions. Notice, in the photo, the post standing on the corner on the footpath, It was one of the original Funeral posts (looks like a notice on it. There were a number of these posts located at various places in the town. These posts were used by the Undertakers telling of the death of a local citizen and the necessary arrangements and details. It was possibly a hand written piece of paper and was tacked to the post. Then, at a later date the Undertaker would return to the posts and remove the piece of paper but NEVER remove the tack. Sadly, we do not know the suspicion of letting the tack remain but we have made up some good stories about it. Later years saw the introduction of newspapers etc.
This funeral post custom remained for many years longer in the town of Hughenden in North Queensland, another early mining town, than it did in Mount Morgan. For interest, the town was named after Hughenden Manor, which was the residence of the British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. Hughenden Manor is now a National Trust building in England. A word on Hon. William Kidston, Premier. He was born in Scotland but being dissatisfied with his work as an iron moulder he left and came to NSW then on to Rockhampton, Queensland. In Rockhampton he became a book seller. He became very interested in the labour party and in those years there was a great deal of industrial unrest. He rose very quickly in the Labour Party and became Premier in January 1906 till November 1907.Because he could not attain a majority Lord Chelmsford dissolved the Parliament. Kidston left the Labour Party and formed his own Liberal party and was re-elected to Parliament in February 1908 till February 1911 when he resigned to accept a position as President of the Land Court till his death in 1919. As at 2016, he remains the last person to ever make a comeback as Premier of Queensland after losing the position.
Remembering Shirley Stone
This is a tribute to SHIRLEY STONE, a former Mount Morgan-ite, who recently passed away in Brisbane. Shirley was one of the early members of the Mount Morgan Arts and Crafts Group formed in 1989. She will be fondly remembered by many and also handicraft people for her expertise in all forms of craft work and her teaching and assistance to others. She was also a foundation member of the Golden Mount Carriage Crafts at the Railway Station where her crafts were very popular with locals and tourists visiting the Carriages. She is survived by her husband, Ron, and together they were an exceptional team. Our sincere condolences go to Ron and family in their loss of Shirley – a very talented and gifted lady.
AUSTRALIA DAY Celebrations 2017
Another very successful Australia day was had by the Mount Morgan community, thanks to the sponsorship of Rockhampton Regional Council and the hard work of our little band of enthusiastic Rotary members.
Brad, Michelle and Daughters Ashlyn and Zarlie
Wonderful weather and enthusiastic crowds made for a day of fun and amusements up at Number 7 Dam Mount Morgan and best of all, everything was free.
The fair included free sausage sizzle, drinks, ice cream, lamingtons, vegemite sandwiches, watermelon, fairy floss, face painting and all the rides the kids could fit in between swimming in the beautiful water. The Mount Morgan Rotary Club
would like to sincerely thank, Rockhampton Regional Council for their sponsorship, Funtime Amusements for the rides and free fairy floss, councillors and Ellen Smith and Neil Fisher for their attendance.
Hadassah, Ezekiel, Zac, Mel, Xavier
Thank you also to the Mount
Morgan Light Horse Brigade, Barbara and Jim Gould for the generous loan of their ice cream machine and our wonderful musicians, Jim Lynch, Di Coburn, Freda McDougal, Cambo and Hambo, poet Alma Graham, and most importantly the Mount Morgan Community for their continued and faithful support. The Community is the reason for our efforts and your happy smiling faces our reward. Article supplied by Rotary Club of Mount Morgan.

Nestled between the chemist and the noticeboard down the street proudly sits Phillip and his store, “Your Local Fruit Barn.” The business has been open for trade since December 1st 2016 offering the town an alternative choice for their fresh fruit and veggies. His range also includes eggs, jams, condiments and spices. This business proudly promotes local produce sourcing with seven farms being on their books and a lot of their fresh produce coming from inside Queensland where possible. Phillip said “We have something for everyone. Family boxes of fruit and veg at a reasonable price as well as pensioner boxes. If you get a script filled at the chemist next door the pensioner boxes go down to $19.” Another positive change for the town paving the way for a healthier lifestyle.

Country Carnival Cricket
The Mount Morgan Cavaliers Cricket team, organised by Kev Crawford and captained by Scott Toby, once again competed in the Rockhampton Cricket Club’s Country Carnival from 26-28 January. The team was also hoping to repeat last year’s effort when they won their division with three wins from three games, however they couldn’t manage it this year. In the first game against Keppel Sands the Cavaliers got off to a great start scoring 256 off their 25 overs. Todd Toby hit a brilliant 154 and was well supported by Jerry Barney and Neville Blake. However, Keppel Sands got the runs with only one to go. On Friday against Marlborough Jerry Barney and Robbie Spence bowled particularly well to restrict them to 156. With some great batting by Scott Toby and Neville Blake, Cavaliers scored 179. Saturday’s game saw great bowling by the whole team restrict P.C. Unts to only 154. However despite a quick 37 by Scott Toby and C.J. Arron carrying his bat through the whole innings for 41 not out, the regular fall of wickets resulted in a total of only 113. This game marked the first time all 4 Toby boys Scott, Todd, Curtley and Tyler played in the same team in a Country Carnival game. A great 3 days of cricket was enjoyed by the whole team and all are looking forward to the 2018 Country Carnival.
Golf Club News

Welcome to 2017, we hope everyone had an enjoyable break over the Christmas season. The golf club has hit the ground running, with some very motivated members really injecting a lot of hard work into improvements. The results are starting to show, with the recent rains helping out also. Look out for our flyer in your mailbox soon with all the clubs information, and maybe pop out and see what has changed at your local golf course. Australia Day – Thursday 26th saw a few of our members have a good old Aussie hit about the course, in a fine array of ocker inspired costumes. The weather was glorious, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed being in our beautiful Australian outdoors. Congratulations goes to Roger Brewster who was the winner on the day. Coming Up - Junior Golf has commenced for 2017, and we look forward to our ongoing partnership with the Golden Mount Festival Committee, who generously sponsor our up and coming young players. Look out for their new shirts coming soon! Anyone wanting to bring out their kids to have a go are welcome. Juniors meet Saturday mornings at 8:30am for coaching and to play, followed by lunch. All this for only $2 per child makes it great value for a fun morning of exercise, fresh air and of course golf. Mount Morgan Ladies Open is Saturday, 18th February, with shotgun start from 7:30am. There will be a goose club and raffles, with a competition fee of $25, including a lovely lunch. To nominate please email mountmorgangolfclub@ gmail.com or call Melissa 0407675377.
Rodeo Round Up
7.
March the 18th is the date for Mount Morgan Rodeo Association cent sale at the Community Services Hall in Morgan St, Mount Morgan. Doors officially open a 1pm with the cent sale starting at 2pm. Tickets will still be 5 for $1.00, comment was made that it’s a cent sale not a dollar sale by local patrons, so we will be sticking with this format. Hundreds of prizes have been collected with more to come, so come and join us for an afternoon of fun. Free tea/coffee and afternoon tea will be available too. Our scheduled horse sports day for January unfortunately had to be postponed at short notice due to a sad family loss, and we sincerely apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced. The date is still to be set, but we will post to Mount Morgan Pride and the Mount Morgan Rodeo Facebook page when details become available. This year the Rodeo will be held at Mount Morgan Show grounds on Sunday April 30th as part of the May Day weekend with the gates opening early and full day of events, both inside and out of the ring. Golden Streetscape For Mount Morgan Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee and Division Five Councillor, Cr Cherie Rutherford, said that Council listened to what the Mount Morgan community wanted and this funding delivers on their aspirations. “Improving the visual appeal of Morgan Street was raised as a priority by Mount Morgan businesses and residents through the Council’s Community Conversation meetings,” she said. “Since then, we have held discussions with the community, collected their ideas and developed a streetscape concept that is very exciting for Mount Morgan.” Community engagement revealed that residents wanted to see gazebos, tables, chairs, shade, inclusion of historical artefacts such as the Mafeking Bell and also having a show stopper. “I am proud to have been part of the planning process and am looking forward to the final outcome.” Council is currently undertaking all preliminary design and planning works to allow construction to commence after the Golden Mount Festival in May. The redeveloped streetscape works aim to be completed before the end of the 2017 calendar year (weather permitting).

The Orange Dot Movie Review
By Larry at Fox Video
Every now and then it all seems too much. Too much control, bureaucracy, paperwork, deadlines, demands, conformity, noise, movement, restriction, connectedness...Not enough freedom! Time to pack it up and move further into the bush. But then, tomorrow’s a new day and all is well again. Not so with Ben (Viggo Mortensen), he actually packed up his family, headed North into the Canadian wilderness and did it! CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is the funny and heartfelt journey of a father raising his six children completely off the grid. Wow. That’s a brave move even in today’s world. In the wilds of Canada Ben teaches his kids survival skills and home-schools them with a challenging curriculum and a healthy dose of anarchy. Their rigorous daily physical training is matched by the stretching of their minds as well. Politics, economics, history, philosophy, music...It’ll be fascinating to see how these kids turn out! But when tragedy strikes and the family is forced to leave their self-created paradise, Ben begins to question the choices he has made for his family. How will they cope when they are confronted by the “real world”? Deep, heartfelt and utterly compelling; adventurous, funny and immensely enjoyable, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is a refreshing take on the challenges of parenthood. Also featuring great performances from Frank Langella and Steve Zahn, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is directed by Matt Ross and is two hours of natural beauty, laughter, wonder and concern. You’ll be totally involved with these kids...AND their Dad. Loved it!

John Steinberger, Rhonda Ramm, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad & Mick Cranny
It’s been full steam ahead at MMPAD already this year. Six volunteers attained their CPR & First Aid Certificates in early January. MMPAD has combined forces with “Host to Hire” and Community Solutions to employ three trainees. Some of you may have already been introduced to our new Administration Assistant Quinten Tremaine. Quinten has taken up the trainee position for office and administration duties. Two other trainee positions of groundsmen have also been filled by local residents. Welcome aboard guys! On Monday 30th January MMPAD President John Steinberger and Project Office Rhonda Ramm attended the invitation only reception for the Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk, MP Premier of Queensland and the Queensland Cabinet held at Archer Park Railway Station. This reception provided the opportunity to touch base with Ministers and Rockhampton Regional Council Representatives to discuss and follow up on MMPAD’s ongoing projects in particular, unemployment, revitalisation of the Dam, Fish Habitat Project, Tourism Development, Morgan Street revitalisation and future opportunities for Mount Morgan. Discussions were held with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Director General Frankie Carroll regarding Morgan Street’s upgrade, tourism
opportunities including the ongoing feasibility study of sustaining and reopening the Clay Caverns and the preservation of the Dinosaur Footprints. The funding for restoration of the Hunslett Steam Train and acquisition of the rail corridor and subsequent track was discussed and we were assured that we would have advice very shortly about these matters after the Director General concluded meetings with Rockhampton Regional Council. MP Bill Byrne also lent an attentive ear to MMPAD regarding the social and economic development, No 7 dam especially the restocking and fishing improvement opportunities. MP Grace Grace spoke with us about the historical significance of Mount Morgan’s heritage buildings and the need to preserve them, employment and the opportunities that may present to Mount Morgan with the Carbine Resources Project. Unfortunately some ministers with portfolios directly involving MMPAD projects were not in attendance however the venue came as an opportunity to chat to some ministers and also catch up with government representatives. The street scape project which is due for completion by the end of 2017 is a fine start to the revitalisation of the business district, and MMPAD would like work with all Mount Morgan businesses to further enhance the
viability of business in our town with the continuation of Business Networking Nights. MMPAD will endeavour to upgrade our website and seek future opportunities for marketing projects. MMPAD also maintains the notice board in Morgan Street, so if you have something to advertise, visit the Railway Complex and we’ll place it on the board for two weeks free of charge. If you’d like to place an advertisement in the Argus Newspaper, classified’s range from $5 to $10. Email mmpad@bigpond.com A reminder that MMPAD membership for 2017 is now due. New businesses and individuals are most welcome and membership is $25 per annum.
