History & Reflections
Pride in your Town
In this edition, we are going back in time and bringing to life some of the Pleasures??? of yester year. Can you remember being out of sorts when a child, and hearing your Mother’s voice saying, “Open up wide” and from that moment on it was ghastly? What was swallowed would leave a lasting memory and a mental scar for life. It was that dreaded castor oil. These were the years when some horrifying potions came into the health act. Can YOU remember that dreaded castor oil with its foul tasting dose that was supposed to purify your system dramatically? Then there was the Epsom salts that was heralded as a ‘self-starter’. Sometimes a jelly bean was offered as a peace token after a horrible dose. Another horror was the Senna Tea and anyone having had a dose of either three of the above would never allow themselves a good sneeze.
Can you remember the big firms in most cities of T.C.Beirne, McDonnell and East, and McWhirters and the joy of entering into one of these shops? One foot in the door and you would be approached by a smiling, well dressed male, generally in a three-piece tailored suit and offering every assistance you could require. He was the Floor Walker, a major part of a business in those times. If needed, he would escort you to the correct counter for your purchase and you would be greeted delightfully by a uniformed lass whose assistance was invaluable. The service was outstanding.
In many stores the payment (cash only of course) with the hand written docket was placed in a metal container attached to a spring loaded mechanism and by pulling the cord it was launched to the cashier situated on a higher level than ground floor. If any change was required the If you were unfortunate to get “pimples” the old molasses change and docket were then loaded into the container and sulphur was administered, (yuk) generally with very and mostly it was gravity feed back to the counter and few good results. Medicines of this century may not cure the waiting shop assistant. Children loved this operation. the illness totally but oh boy have they replaced some If you wish, please go to our Local Museum which has this horrors of yester year! device installed from a local drapery store of our past. Also missing from modern times is that your purchase was To a much more delightful memory of yester year - Let’s generally neatly wrapped and tied expertly with string, not just placed in a plastic bag. go shopping! Life was not all dull in those olden days as service and kindness greatly helped to make shopping a pleasure. Think Clean - Be Tidy

The Historical Museum volunteers would like to thank Mr Ken O’Dowd , Federal Member for Flynn, for approaching the Department of Veteran Affairs for funding to advance our ANZAC Memorial Display . Mr O’Dowd was able to obtain a grant of $3000 for the purchase of 12 glass cabinets. These have been purchased and will be erected in the very near future.

Block and Tackle Block By Graeme Meade
I was in a friends shed and I spotted this old block and tackle, well part of one anyway. When I asked if he knew anything about it, I was told “it’s been hanging up there for years, I cannot remember where it came from, probably from the mine”. It seems to be the standard answer when I ask about old things. We took it down to take some photos. On one side of the casting it has “Improved Westons Block Tested to 1 ton” on it, the other side has “To Lift 13 cwts” ( for the youngsters, CWT means “Hundred Weight”, 100lbs (112lbs UK), 100 lbs is about 45 kg. 20 cwt to a ton.) This is the top part of the block and tackle; there would probably be an endless chain and a smaller pulley with a hook attached on the bottom. I would guess this piece is from the 1930s, but it could be earlier. Most of these block and tackles were made from timber, so to find an old cast iron one is quite rare. It is the kind of tool that would have been used at the Mount Morgan Mine, but the mine was not the only place that could have used something like this. Looking on the internet I cannot find much information. There was a company formed in 1888 called Western Block Co. Lockport, New York, United States. This company operated into the 1930 and they made these kinds of items. But so did other companies. So the stamp on this one saying “improved Westons block” is just one company trying to better its competitors. The Weston Differential Pulley Blocks were first patent in the 1850s, by Thomas Weston. these are basically the same as a block and tackle you would buy today at hardware or auto stores.

For five months every year, Claude Harvey better known as “The Mower man” pushes a mower along the streets, in towns all over Australia. This is his way of drawing attention to his quest to raise funds for the Braveheart’s foundation. On Sunday 23rd July “The Mower Man” arrived in Mount Morgan. When Caroline & George proprietors of the Mount Morgan Motel & Van Park were approached to donate for the cause, they had no hesitation in offering Claude motel room for the night valued at $75. While in town Claude also received plenty of support in donations from locals and business owners and IGA customers. To date Claude has raised $970,00 in almost eleven years in his quest to raise a million dollars for the cause. Claude left Mount Morgan on his way to Emerald early Sunday Morning. Pictured above Caroline & Claude.
CQ Dysart Reunion 50 past and present residents of Dysart enjoyed the 11th CQ Dysart Reunion on July 30th at Bell Park, Emu Park. Included among those present were a number who had turned out for the first time. Quite a number of the regular attendees are tripping in Oz and we hope to see them next year. The Reunion offered a wonderful opportunity for Dysartians to catch up and there was much chatter and laughter as stories of the good times were shared. We were very pleased to have the younger generations attend and we hope to build on this next year as we would love to see you. The Reunion is held on the last Sunday in July each year. The Capricorn Coast is a lovely place to visit and Bell Park is a very popular venue. Look forward to catching up again next year.” Fran (Campbell)

Visitor’s Views
Thursday 20th July Catherine McCabe, the Destination Coordinator for Rockhampton Regional Council and eleven volunteers from the Spire Tourist Information Centre in Rockhampton visited Mount Morgan. The group visited the Railway Complex, Historical Museum, the caravan parks, hotels and then enjoyed some retail therapy in Morgan Street. Other highlights for the visitors were the TMC Town and Mine Tour and a picnic lunch at the No 7 Dam. This was to familiarize the volunteers with all that Mount Morgan has to offer tourists. Pictured below the Spire Volunteers & TMC Tour Operator John On Saturday 15th July three sisters called into the Steinberger. Railway Museum on their travels. Pam Hancox from Wollongong, started her trek alone, collecting Shirley Murphy from Casino along the way and finally Lyn Milne in Moura. The ladies enjoyed stopovers at Baralaba and Theodore before arriving in Mount Morgan on their way to Yeppoon. Pictured L-R Shirley Murphy, Pam Hancox and Lyn Milne
On the 24th July 2017, the Railway Museum had a visit from Ken McDonald. Ken was a driver for Taffy’s soft drinks back in 1972 - 1974. Many of you may remember Taffy’s Softdrinks and their home deliveries. Ken lived in Yeppoon while he was a driver for Taffy’s however he now lives in Victoria near Philip Island. The cold weather has bought Ken to Queensland for winter. Retired now he likes to play Golf and travel in his free time. He was very happy to see that Mount Morgan is still thriving and has some beautiful places to visit.
Jim Quinn and his Daughter Annette Quinn (Pictured Bottom Left) visited the Railway Museum on the 27th July 2017. Jim’s family moved to Mount Morgan from Cracow in 1932, when his father was employed at the mine as a winding engineer driver. His Father built the family home at 43 James Street. Jim attended the Mount Morgan High School, however his attendance there was short lived, after he topped the class exam to become a telegram boy. Originally this job entailed delivering telegrams via pushbike until he was given a horse. Jim’s career blossomed with Australia Post and he soon advanced to Post Master and spent the years relieving at almost every Post Office in Australia. Jim also worked as a Customs Officer in Melbourne and then he retired and is now living in Brisbane with his wife of 60 years, Heather. He remembers the time during the war when American Soldiers were in Mount Morgan and the glider crashed into the area behind the Railway Station. “My mates and I used to rent our horses out to the American Soldiers, and they’d pay us with cigarettes. I didn’t smoke so I would sell mine and pocket a tidy sum. Jim remembers. “I’m 91 and never smoked a day in my life”. Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary Jim and Heather for the 10th August, 2017

While the closure of the Iconic “Golden Nugget” Hotel was certainly sad, we wish Wayne and Sandra Sigvart all the best for their retirement. It is also disapointing to see that the Rock has decided to close it’s mini branches, especially the Mount Morgan Branch. Kerrily-lyn, Schae and staff have provided an excellent service to the community and we believe that they are doing all they can to minimise the impact on their customers. MMPAD has received a grant from the Queensland Government First Start Community Programme “Skilling Queenslanders for Work” to assist towards employing Mount Morgan local Samantha Robinson. Samantha will have theng opportunity to attain a Certificate III in Business while working with us.

National Tree Day 2017
Mt. Morgan CBD Update Works to transform Mount Morgan’s CBD continue to make progress, with all remaining on track to see completion by the end of 2017.
On the 30th of July, over 30 dedicated residents made the journey up to the picturesque Number 7 Dam to plant native plants for National Tree Day. Rockhampton Regional Council organised the event for the town and supplied the plants for everyone to plant and also some to give away to any keen volunteer who wanted them. Mount Morgan Rotary Club were on hand to provide food and refreshments to everyone after the hard work had been completed.
We even had a visit from Councillor Cherie Rutherford (Pictured top left), who got down amongst the bark and planted her own trees to commemorate the event. The annual event is highly beneficial for the town and helps everyone to see that Mount Morgan Pride is alive and well. Thank you to Rockhampton Regional Council, Mount Morgan Rotary Club, and everyone who turned out to plant trees or to give a hand and celebrate our Mount Morgan Dam.
The latest works completed as part of the revitalisation project include: demolition, water main redirections, new water point of supply, underground power and communications infrastructure. Current works include the toilet facility and footings. Rockhampton Regional Council thanks the community for their continued support and patience during the project. The $1.9 million Mount Morgan Street scaping project is a jointly funded Federal, State and Council initiative which is supporting 34 jobs throughout construction.

Matters

Spring is just around the corner. The birds are all looking for nesting material. Please make sure that you don’t leave little bits of cotton etc. under the clothesline or around the yard, as it will be picked up and wound into a nest, and it is very likely that the baby birds could end up tangled in it. Many times we have had to cut fledglings out of an entanglement of cotton, string or fishing line.
On occasions we have had to have the babies euthanised as they were too badly damaged. Elastic bands are another dangerous item to leave around, The bird in the photo (top right), is a Noisy Friarbird. These birds are aggressive feeders, and will squabble amongst themselves while feeding, and harass any other birds in the area. Their diet is nectar, fruits and insects
and are commonly known as honeyeaters. They are commonly found anywhere in Eastern Australia, in open woodland, swamp woodland and watercourses. After summer, breeding flocks form, following flowering forests.

Movie Review
Most humans are cyberenhanced in the near future. Cybernetic augmentations that hyperboost a person’s intelligence, strength, vision, hearing, or a combination of enhancements. The primary developer of these cyber-products, Hanka Robotics has been for some time secretly working on a major project. Until now, robots functioning throughout society have been doing so with artificial intelligence, but Hanka has gone way beyond that. They have designed a mechanical body, a “Shell” which can integrate and be controlled by a human brain... The first of it’s kind in the world. They have their own candidate. In the alleyways of the city there has been an incident where a young woman’s parents have been killed and she has been left barely clinging to life.
Her brain, her mind, her “GHOST” is implanted in the “SHELL”. Hanka has designed her body and will train her brain to be a Super Soldier in the escalating battle against crime and corruption in their city. Her counsellor and mother-figure calls her Killian, but within a year she attains the rank in the Security Forces of, and becomes simply known as Major. The terrorists reach a new low when they learn to hack into people’s enhancements and control their minds and memories. Major, on the other hand remembers nothing if her previous life, as she cuts a swathe through organised crime with her loyal team of battlehardened misfits protecting her back...But there’s something... Every now and then, becoming more frequent... Like a glitch... Fragments
of memory? Visions of an alleyway aflame, the aftermath of disaster. Is this HER alleyway? Was she told the truth about the circumstances of her becoming the ‘GHOST’ candidate. And what about the anti-rejection medicine she has to take? Has she been lied to? Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt and Juliette Binoche star in this non-stop over-the-top science fiction action flick. GHOST IN THE SHELL is directed by Rupert Sanders, is rated M for “Violence and stylised nudity” and runs for two hours. GHOST IN THE SHELL surprised me... Loved it!
