History & Reflections

Pride in your Town William Knox D’Arcy and Walter Hall have both received great acknowledgement of their interest in the gold discovery of Mount Morgan and the wealth they both gained from it. However William Pattison and his story is not as well known. William Pattison was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1830 after his parents had immigrated from England. Both William and his brother, Joseph, were educated in Mummery’s Boarding school in Bagdad. The family left Tasmania in 1846 and sailed to Victoria. His parents continued in the dairy Farm industry but the brothers became interested in gold mining. Both brothers did very well from the gold fields of Ballarat, Bendigo and Forrest Creek. While residing in Melbourne, William held a seat on the Melbourne City Council. August 1864 William Pattison came to Rockhampton where he opened business as a butcher, and later set up a boiling-down plant and the first freezing plant. He became Mayor of the City of Rockhampton and was a willing and keen force to improve the town in every manner.

Always an ambitious man, with the acquisition of increased wealth, unlike his contempories who all took their wealth to England he decided to do his best for the town.

William Pattison had always been interested in mining ventures around Rockhampton so naturally he became interested in the discovery of gold in Mount Morgan. He became one of the original six syndicate members of the Mine. He was also connected with the Gold mining Company and as gold resources went up and down so did his portfolio of shares. Finally he did not make a great deal of money from his venture in Mount Morgan shares. In 1886 he became a keen business man in Rockhampton. He was elected to represent Blackall in the Queensland Legislative Assembly taking on the position of Treasurer. When that seat was abolished he then became the Rockhampton representative in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1888 to 1893. Archibald Archer, a founder of Rockhampton served in those years also.

Shortly after this time he suffered a stroke and later settled in Brisbane for some time. While there he bought the Harris Terraces in George Street and with two other politicians he built “The Mansions” in the same street, a very impressive building. Within the Mansions was a restaurant and one dining room honoured the man naming the room after him. The Mansions now is a government building. In Rockhampton he was a keen and generous patron to the St Andrews Presbyterian Church. William Pattison was a man of many talents, grazier, butcher, dairy farmer, gold miner and politician. However, he was not a good business man. He died in June 1896, aged 66 years and was laid to rest in the South Rockhampton Cemetery. After all his business ventures he did not die as the wealthy man he had been. Records say many of his so called “Friends” were not loyal to him. Now with North Q’land having so much clean up to do after cyclone “Debbie” our effort to think clean and be tidy for our town is such a simple task.

As we approach ANZAC Day next Tuesday, we remember the struggles, courage and sacrifices made by so many to enable us to enjoy the freedom we have today. A large number of these men and women didn’t return home and those who did would never be the same again. Mount Morgan has been the home of many war heroes including Roderick Stanley Dallas and Private Victor Jones.

People In Profile- Carmel & Jack Boyes

4.

What a delight to have the pleasure of interviewing such a charming lady who has played such an interesting and active life in Mount Morgan. Her name is Mrs Carmel Boyes of River Street. One cannot give Carmel’s story without mentioning her late husband, Jack, as they were a positive team in their married life. Carmel was not born in Mount Morgan but in Toowoomba, were she did all her schooling as well, and after school days she worked on her parents’ property. In 1944 she joined the Australian Air Force where she met Jack, who was also serving in the force and they were married in 1946. After air force days they journeyed to Bundaberg and set up home in that city and Jack received training as a carpenter which proved very handy in future years. After five bad cane seasons in Bundaberg they journeyed to Mount Morgan in 1953 with their two small adopted children, Ian and Karen, and took up residence in the Gas Works home. Jack’s Uncle Charlie owned the Gas Works and Jack worked there from 1953 till 1961 until Boral Gas Company bought out the business and the town was then supplied with LP gas.

Jack, Carmel and family then relocated to the present residence where Carmel still resides in River Street. Jack became employed at Mount Morgan Limited as an Ambulance man and did quite of lot of voluntary work for the local Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (Q.A.T.B.) Sadly, Jack had a run of bad health, first with a heart problem, followed by a stroke. In 1975 Jack had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but with excellent early treatment that remained well under control until the stroke when he had to give up work. Jack died in 1997 after many years of wonderful care from Carmel. Jack had spent many hours on his hobby of collecting rocks, and then on a visit to Willis Island Jack’s cousin gave them a suitcase of shells and they became keen collectors. They collected shells on both Low Woody Island and walking on the Reef. Both rock and shell collections are quite extensive. However, both these wonderful people are generally remembered for their life long dedication to the Scouting Movement. In 1946 while they resided in Bundaberg, Jack joined the Scout organization rising to Scout Master. Carmel had been recruited as a Cub Master. On returning to Mount Morgan Jack continued in the role as Scout Master at the Hut then situated opposite the Welfare Bowls club. Some years later this hut was later demolished by Mount Morgan Limited. Carmel devoted more time to the children in those early years. At the old golf links, which was situated at the back of Glen Gordon, the golf club house then became a second scout hut when the Golf club transferred to Hamilton Creek. Later due to the flooding of that area the Hut was demolished. At this stage mention must be made of the Mafeking Bell which was originally erected in the grounds of the Mount Morgan Shire Council and rung to notify of fires. On a visit to Council Jack noticed the Bell in the yard and that it was showing a crack. He got permission to take it to Mount Morgan Limited where it was repaired and then in 1961 was placed in the Scout area at the old Golf Links. After the flood it was placed in its present position in Dee Street. Jack heard of the demolition of the Woman’s ward at the hospital and received the timber and with all Voluntary help, including Carmel, who was now back in the Movement, the Scout Hut at Dee Street was built with voluntary labour. Jack had designed the building and on opening day it was reported to be the best designed Scout Hut in Queensland. In his life time Jack Boyes had built 6 Scout Huts including the one at Struck Oil, sadly, no longer in use. Thankfully, this remarkable team of Jack and Carmel Boyes, were presented by the Mount Morgan Shire Council the “Community Service Awards” in 1989. Other honours received in recognition of their wonderful work were presented at Government House are; 1959 Jack, Medal of Merit. Carmel, Letter of Commendation. 1968 Jack, Silver Acorn Award. (Highest of scouting awards.) 1969 Carmel, Medal of Merit. Truly outstanding achievements by both.

Now for more of Carmel’s story and doings. Carmel had returned to the Scouting movement working very hard on the construction of the present Scout hut but when Jack became ill she gave it up to take on the role of carer. For her own interest Carmel started collecting perfume bottles as a hobby. Having viewed the collection it is amazing the variety of shapes and sizes of so many bottles. So many little ones of delightful design, it is hard to believe the imagination of the originator. Carmel also gave many years’ service to the Meals on Wheels organization both as a deliverer and a cook. She is an amazing gardener and home renovations are one of her many excellent talents.

5.

Now, in later years she does cross words, Sudoku, enjoys reading books of various topics, and all the feminine skills of knitting and crocheting. Her time is never wasted. Carmel is fortunate in her “Older” years to still enjoy reasonable good health. When asked what she would like to see happen to Mount Morgan in the future, her simple answer was “that people would take a little more pride in their homes, gardens and the town”. If only the Mount had more remarkable citizens like “The Boyes”. Story by Bette Broom

Amanda Marsh & Son

Amanda Marsh says being part of the Red Cross Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) has been completely life changing for her and her children and is recommending it to people interested in joining the program. Red Cross is now looking for families to join the education and peer support program to see if more lives can be changed. The free two-year program is for families with children aged 4-5 who are preparing to go to school. Families are visited fortnightly by a tutor who provides fun learning experiences for parents and children to do together. They also run community outings events and playgroup sessions so that parents can connect with other families. When Amanda Marsh first joined the Red Cross HIPPY program it was on the strict proviso that she would only do activities in her own home and only if her friend was the tutor. “I signed up because I thought it doesn’t matter what state my house is in, it doesn’t matter what state I’m in, My mate’s not going to come in and go nag nag!” said Amanda. “That’s just me worrying about the judgmental side of things.”

Amanda witnessed her partner, the father of her children, commit suicide. His death and the aftermath left Amanda traumatised. She lost all her confidence and rarely left the house. Sandy Hansen who runs the Mt Morgan program, and has been through it herself, says the aim is to provide parents with confidence as their child’s first teacher. “We want to give children a good grounding for starting school and to connect families so that they can support one-another. “Having good connections with people is so important for your health and wellbeing. This program is more than just teaching children about letters and numbers. It’s also about parents being able to manage the challenges of raising young children with friends and support around them. If parents are feeling confident and connected their kids are much more likely to successfully take part in school,” says Sandy. Once families have been through the program, parents may be offered a supported pathway to employment. Sandy says the fact that she and other workers have been through the program makes it easier for new people joining to feel comfortable. “You know you’re going to be supported by people who have been there done that,” says Sandy. “They know that

having young children is hard. They’re not there to judge.”

For Amanda it has offered her and her children a way out of the prison that their home had become. As she’s gained confidence as a parent she’s been able to come out of her shell. And with support from her Red Cross tutor she found the courage to join in with group outings and events. “I am improving on my people skills,” says Amanda. “And I guess it really is HIPPY that’s helped me to do that.” Recently Amanda and her son joined other families for a day out at the beach. Emu Park Surf Lifesavers spoke with children and families about staying safe at the beach, in the sun and the water. The children also got to try out the surf-lifesaver’s paddle boards.

“It was really good!” says Amanda. “He got to run around with other kids and play and did the lifesaving stuff and just played on the beach.” It’s an outing she says she couldn’t have done before joining the Red Cross program. “There ain’t no way in the world I would have gone off with some other mums just for something to do,” says Amanda. “But it’s HIPPY that’s helped me as a mum to improve my ability to deal with other people. “Most of the other parents I’ve met are just as nutty as me! They’re just down to earth people so it’s been really good.” Her skills and confidence have improved so much that she is now ready to start helping out running playgroup sessions for other families. “This year I am running the playgroup so I’ll be able to get out there and meet more parents. “It’s changed my life. Not just the enjoyment and relationship with my kids, but it’s changed me as a person,” says Amanda. “I feel really good in myself.”

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video Everyone on the planet , but especially every girl (whether 9 or 90 years of age) should watch MOANA.

and together they voyage across the ocean on a fun-filled, action-packed quest.

Disney does it again with an entralling epic adventure about a spirited teen living on a Pacific island paradise.

Wasn’t that keen to watch it. My family outvoted me on the viewing that night and I’m glad they did. This movie is an absolute delight... and that song, “How Far I’ll Go” (put the subtitles on so you can follow the lyrics) is close to perfection.

Life is wonderful, plentiful, happy... But of course there are rules, and the most important of these is that “No one must venture beyond the reef”. Then one day their island paradise is faced with an existential threat... Of course this means that her family, her friends, her entire community is in dire peril as well. Something must be done. Someone must step up... Soon!

In despair MOANA (Auli’i Cravalho) wanders her island hoping to find something or someone to save the day... Then she discovers secrets about her own ancestors and things about herself that lead her to hatch a daring plan, breaking all of the rules... But it just might work; maybe. MOANA sets sail on a bold mission to save her people. Along the way she meets the once mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson),

MOANA is rated PG because ‘some scenes may scare young children,’ ,but I think the whole family can safely set sail with MOANA as long as Mum or Dad are there, for one hour and forty minutes of pure pleasure. MOANA - Loved it!

Bentonite Clay absorbs toxins, and many animals seek it out in the wild. A reptile carer had a python who had eaten a cane toad and was at deaths’ door. I gave him some bentonite, which he put in water in a tub. The snake was placed in a sack and left overnight soaking in the tub. The next morning it was competely healed, and ready to go! It is also useful for people with tummy bugs, and it also draws out toxins from wounds etc.

We once had a lorikeet whose beak took 3 years to grow back!

We have in care at present a magpie whose top and bottom beak have been broken after it had been hit by a car. We are waiting back for advice on how long it may take to grow back. It should grow back eventually, but could take years.

Quite often they are so fixated on the insect that they aren’t even aware of the danger. Kookaburras are similar with their fixation.

It wont be long now till the tawny frogmouths start hunting on the road again. I have included a photo of one that we had in care, who has been released. Please remember that they are very slow (and silent) flyers, and if you see one sitting on the road you need to slow right down to give it time to take off.

I am always fascinated by animal behaviour, and something I have

noticed often is that kookaburras are very polite to each other when hunting and eating. If one kookie finds a morsel, the others will just sit back and wait their turn. They never snatch food from another kookie. Funny to watch though is the lorikeets grabbing kookaburras by the tail and trying to drag them off the interesting morsel.
