History & Reflections

Vintage Kerosene Pump

Pride in your Town Although the Archer Brothers discovered and named Rockhampton, it possibly may never have flourished if the Canoona Gold rush in 1858 had not happened. In those years there was no state of Queensland but the New South Wales authorities were always keen to have men go out and find deposits of gold in country areas.

It was in February of 1858, a Mr W C Chapple, a gentleman with much goldfield experience set out to find gold within the Fitzroy area. On his return to Gladstone, at a public meeting he informed those present of the find he had discovered at Canoona. The meeting agreed the results should be communicated to Sydney to be reported in the papers. That was the start of the Canoona gold rush. Huge numbers of ships left Sydney with those hoping to make their fortune. Included in the many thousands that flocked to the goldfield included many Chinese with the gold fever. Sadly the rush only lasted 66 days.

So many thousands had to make their way back to Rockhampton by dray, horse or walk and those who could afford it went by ship back to Sydney.

Rockhampton was reported to be in a state of collapse with storekeepers winding up as quickly as possible. Many just remained waiting for shipment back to Sydney and doing any odd jobs that could be found.

It was strange that Mr W C Chapple, who had found gold in a number of places in the area, missed the Ironstone Mountain. Even the Archer Brothers who had walked the hills of Struck Oil did not discover the Golden Mountain. Of course the Archers were looking for grazing land not gold.

When gold was discovered by William MacKinlay and then the knowledge passed on to the Morgan Brothers, the six man syndicate of 1882 made William Knox D’Arcy and Walter Hall millionaires very early in those first years.

The syndicate took up leases of square miles so Mount Morgan had no real gold rush by thousands. Due to the wealth of Mount Morgan, Rockhampton weathered the severe economic depression of the 1890’s and many of the town’s substantial brick and stone buildings date from this period. Quay Street still is possibly Rockhampton’s greatest historical street but many thanks should be given to the riches of Mount Morgan.

I am sure when some people look at this they will wonder what it is and for others it will bring back memories, good or bad.

It is a kerosene pump, used to pump the kerosene out of a 5 gallon drum into a small container or directly into a lamp or heater. It would probably be a job the children would have to do every couple of days.

There are no manufacturing marks on it any were, so I am only guessing.

It’s made from tin pressed together, the spout is soldered on. It is about 42 cm long with the pumping handle extending out another 25 cm, about 2.5 cm round.

There looks like a glass marble inside, maybe it is a stopper or float.

To operate, the handle would be pumped up and down.

I really have no idea of the age, 1900s to 1950s? The 20 litre drums came out with a plastic tap in the bottom, easier than pumping.

It is a nice looking old thing.

The Wally Hall Memorial Golf Day

What a fantastic turnout in honour of treasured, long time club member, the late Wally Hall! Family and friends descended on the Mount Morgan Golf Club for a 3 person Ambrose tournament on Sunday, 19th of March, and an uplifting day was had by all. Some spectacular golf was played, with superior skills on display and an abundance of jovial, competitive spirit.

The winning team, fondly renamed the “The Chook House” for all of their loud cackling, was profoundly comprised of Wally Hall’s Son, Barry Hall, his Daughter, Letani Mackay and Granddaughter Zoe Mackay. How wonderful that their names will be the first on his beautiful trophy. Some lovely prizes were won, with special thanks to Owen Brewster who donated some items of his stunning handmade jewellery, and for the donations from the Hall and Mackay families. Peter Mackay, (Macca) made a heartfelt speech summing up the spirit of the day, and much toasting went on in the afternoon to honour a great man.

Mount Morgan Dam overflows again Cyclone Debbie and her aftermath certainly caused havoc throughout Queensland and NSW, however Mount Morgan was left with mostly minor damage and water flowing over the dam spillway and closing off several roads.

When some residents reported over 100mm of rain from the 19th -23rd March then another 198.5mm to 213mm from the 26th -30th March it’s no surprise that roads including Pidduch’s Crossing, creeks at Waterhall, Struck Oil, and the mine crossing were closed to vehicles.

The road from Dululu to Biloela was also closed due to the rain combined with the release of water from the Callide Dam.

The Rockhampton Regional Council were closely monitoring conditions at the Mount Morgan No 7 Dam as the dam was 0.8m above the spillway crest.

The Emergency Action Plan (EAP) was in the initial stage and the trigger point for the next stage of notice to residents downstream to move to higher ground was if the crest reached 1.2m.

This didn’t happen and we thank council for their close monitoring of the storage levels and rainfall and for releasing continual updates on the Rockhampton Regional Website and facebook page.

Lest we forget Anzac Day is fast approaching and planning is well in hand. Now that the local RSL is not a club as such, there will be a slight change in this year’s programme. As has been the norm in the past the mid-day luncheon will no longer be held, everything else will be the same.

Dawn Service will commence at 0430hrs at Anzac Park followed by a gunfire breakfast at the Community Service Hall.

The Town March will form up in front of the School of Arts at 1030hrs with a 1045hrs march off. This march will be along Morgan Street and finish at Anzac Park for the Day Service starting at 1100hrs.

We invite all serving and ex-serving military personnel and the Mount Morgan community join us in remembering those who gave their all in service to Australia.

Cyclists brave rain to tour Mount Morgan

I organized a bicycle ride around Mount Morgan for a face book group called “Gentlefolk Single-speed, Fixie and Old Bike Society”. This is a bunch of likeminded people that are keen cyclists, especially on older steel framed bikes. We meet up by the gas light in East Street, over 30 riders, a different type of cycling group, no lycra and no one clomping around in cycling shoes with cleats in.

There was a good selection of bikes, some old men’s and ladies single speeds from the 1930s and 40s, ready to tackle the Mount Morgan hills with no gears.

Quite a few old heavy steel framed bikes from the 70s, a few ape hangers, road bikes, some of the bikes are a real miss-match of different parts from different eras, that’s what the Gentlefolk is all about. I was riding one of my newer bikes a nice Italian steed, 1997 Sintesi mountain bike 21 gears, that’s what you need in Mount Morgan. I loaned out a couple of my bikes, a 1930 Western Star path racer with 1970s Sturmey Archer 3 speed running gear and a lovely 70s Speedwell, running Sturmey Archer 3 speed with drum brakes.

Saturday afternoon came around, with the weather looking partly cloudy, we took off and headed down to the Scout hall. Just as we arrived there one rider was sprawled over the grass, the chain had broken on his bike. I gave the group directions to the next stop and we went back to my shop and I loaned him a bike so he could finish the ride.

Catching the group up at the railway station, we looked around the platform and one of the volunteers told us some of the history of the railway. We headed off to visit St. Marys Church and the Masonic Hall. Many thanks to the staff and patrons at the Grand Hotel for the applause and cheers when we rode past. We stopped at Anzac park for the obligatory Gentlefolk group photo, and then it was down the hill and up the hill to the mine gate. We spent some time looking around there and the gold storage building. I showed some rock and slag samples I have and a boomerang from the boomerang factory.

Next stop was Tipperary to the site of the old swinging bridge. We then headed back for a long slog into a headwind up to Newman Oval. We looked at some of the old dam ruins on the Dee River and spoke about some of the cycling history of Mount Morgan, one of the riders told us he used to race around the dirt track that was on Newman Oval, I will have to do some more research into Mount Morgan cycling history.

As we left the oval we ran into a shower of rain, that didn’t put a damper on things though. We sheltered under trees and buildings for a few minutes then travelled on to the train signal behind the high school field, we had a talk there and moved on to the high school. Everyone was a bit wet by then, so I asked the group if they wanted to stop now or continue on to the dam. So off to the dam we went, heading down River Street, it was a real highlight of the ride.

It’s not very often, probably never, that the Gentlefolk get to ride over a flooded causeway, but everyone made it through safely.

Up the undulation to the Number 7 dam, a beautiful sight, the dam was full; with water just trickling over the top, another rare thing to see. After a good rest there, we took off down River Street to the ride over the Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge, another first for the Gentlefolk. After a short talk there we headed off back to the starting point.

Riders that were staying overnight took a shower to freshen up; we all met up at the Leichhardt Hotel for drinks and dinner. A fun night was had by all, before the tired bodies headed to bed.

Some of the riders met up for breakfast, we decided not to go for a Sunday ride. A good time was had by everyone; exploring Mount Morgan is lots of fun. The riders are keen to come back, so I will make it an annual event, there may be bigger hills to ride next year.

Thanks to the people in Mount Morgan that helped me out with the ride and all the people that made the cyclists welcome and feel safe on the roads.

Rodeo Round UP

The Annual Mount Morgan Rodeo will be held at Mount Morgan Showgrounds, Showground Rd Mount Morgan on Sunday April 30th as part of the Labour Day long weekend.

The Day will start with our awesome bushman’s breakfast from 6.30am, with entertainment starting at 9am. This years program includes a number of very interesting demonstrations to add to the list of events, including wood carving by chainsaw, boomerang and didgeridoo demonstrations along with a number of other things to keep the crowd entertained.

The Rodeo itself will commence after the welcome to country, grand parade and with the new venue there will be lots more room to make everyone comfortable, with even an area for horses to warm up and do a little practice.

During the lunch break the fun carries on with kids games and races, as well as the infamous “Bull***t Bingo”, this has been very popular in past years with a chance to choose the place that our “critter leaves it’s message” for $5 a ticket giving a chance to win $300.

The Rodeo’s famous mince burgers & steak sandwiches still have pride of place in the kitchen, but a few more treats will be added to cater to all tastes, in the kitchen area all day.

The rodeo has been part of the Mount Morgan event calendar for over 20 years, and is organised by Colin Bell as part of the CRCA circuit. For enquiries or nominations call Colin on 0418725676.

Wildlife Matters

As I am writing this I am also watching the cyclone coverage. I realise how frightening it would be for people in this affected area , but how much more frightening would it be for our native animals? Some animals have hearing which is thousands of times what our own is, and it is hard to imagine how scary the noise must be for them with the rain and horrendous winds.

When we experienced Cyclone Marcia, we were told by our wildlife rangers that they rescued seabirds from Dululu and even further inland that had been blown there by the cyclone. Most were exhausted but unharmed.

Wildlife carers in the regions affected by the cyclone will be very busy in the coming weeks, as this storm will have an enormous impact, not only physically, but also due to the flooding and the lack of available food.

Recently I included some information on feeding ducks. Ducks can also be fed peas, corn, chopped lettuce, spinach and grain but never feed ducks bread!

We have an adorable little brushtail possum in care now, we have raised him from a furless 52 grams to the size he is now. At 52 grams his eyes were closed, his ears stuck to the top of his head and he was furless.

He was on 3 hourly feeds around the clock for some time, but thankfully now he is on 4 feeds a day.

Brushtail possums usually open their eyes at 100 grams; and approximately 100 days old. This little guy opened his eyes at 62 grams which makes him advanced. Oddly however, he is very tiny, and still may have been around 100 days old. He has plenty of fur and is very independent.

We trust that things have settled down for everyone after the welcome rain Mount Morgan experienced from ex tropical cyclone Debbie. It was great to see the dam overflowing however Mount Morgan Promotions & Development (MMPAD) had to defer the fingerling release for a couple of weeks to mid April.

MMPAD is excited to announce their newest project “Legend and the Locals with Sara Storer”. Sara has just won Female Artist of the Year at Tamworth, as well as taking out the Aria for Country Album of the Year in November 2016, plus 21 Golden Guitar awards over the years and will be supported by ‘Little Mountain’ aka Kate Leahy and band.

Local musicians will have the opportunity to collaborate at a workshop on Wednesday 4th October 2017 and one lucky Mount Morgan artist will have the chance to have a one on one workshop with Sara, and will join her on stage singing a duet, at her concert at the Mount Morgan School of Arts on Saturday 7th October 2017! This is a great opportunity for Mount Morgan to have such talent perform in our town. Tickets will be available soon. Check out our face book and website for more information. On Friday the 24th March 2017 at 10am the Cutter Social Club in association with the Grand Hotel donated $500 to the Mount Morgan Hospital. The funds were specifically given for an extension to the shade area in the long stay outdoor section at the Hospital.

President of the Club Judith Crane and Secretary Kathy Griffits presented the cheque to Director of Nursing Gordon Luck, Mount Morgan Multipurpose Nursing Staff and long stay resident Debbie.

The Social Club raises funds with raffles every Friday at the Grand Hotel, meat trays raffles from IGA at the Morning Melodies and will be having lucky tickets at the Golden Mount Festival May Weekend.

Through the great efforts of members and support from the public, the club has managed to raise this money in just under six months. Their last donation was to Carinity - John Cani Aged Care Facility.

On Wednesday, the 15th March local residents Carmel & Ivan Scott braved the wet weather and visited the Railway Museum/Tourist Information Centre with cousins Denis and Gloria Boland from Brisbane. Denis was born in Mount Morgan to parents John Morris (Jack) Boland and Daphne (Dwyer) Boland and attended the Catholic School until 1947.

Denis’s Father worked at the Mount Morgan Mine and then left to work in Mount Isa when Denis was eight years old. Over the past 50 years Denis and Gloria have returned to the Mount three times and enjoy talking to the locals about Mount Morgan’s history.

Denis became a Jackaroo and managed properties in Muttaburra and in Longreach where he married Gloria.

Today Denis is retired however enjoys playing trumpet, keyboard and singing at various venues around Brisbane.
