How very fortunate is our small town to have not one but two excellent centres that care for our younger generation and Mums can be reassured their children are receiving the best of care and young education. My visit to “Kindy Care” and meeting Lisa and Greg Wyvill just prior to Easter was a pleasant and enlightening experience. The “Kindy Care” building is owned by Lisa and Gregg so they have no limitations on any future development plans that they wish to do. Lisa has 20 years of experience in Child care and all her local staff of 8 have or are completing their Diplomas in Child Care. They can care for 40 children per day from birth to 5 years and before and after school to children of 12 years allowing Mums to do shopping etc. Naturally all children are instructed in cleanliness, good manners and healthy eating. They are all very wise on being “Sun Smart”. Kindy Care is very much into the recycling of items; teaching children this at a young age is a plus. I noticed many empty cartons had been put to good use in various areas. One of the most beautiful features in the grounds was the Fairy Garden. The garden had fairies, gnomes etc but it was enhanced by the delightful mural on the back wall of “Fairy Land” that had been painted by talented SuzieMay Camm. Suzie being a very talented lady with both art and music talents- what an asset to our town. Also there is a “cave” where some rather large dinosaurs live. Children seem to have a great love of dinosaurs but they also have other animals to care for and at present have a large worm farm in progress. Having just purchased a water tank, a herb and vegetable garden in now under way with the children doing all the caring for the plants etc. Their wide education is really preparing them for future years. For the young ones who will venture to Prep 1 next year every Wednesday they journey to the Central State School and join in the class of the prep ones. This breaks down the drama of first day at school. The Central state school students return the visit to the Kindy Care centre also. Their fully covered sand pit is layered with a special purchase of sand that is not only soft but has a therapeutic feature that has a calming effect on the little ones. Another delightful innovation was the personal named mail box for each child. It has cleverly been made by the use of large piece of canvas and each child given its own space to hold their drawings or notes for Mum. To Lisa and Greg, keep up your wonderful work and many thanks for a pleasant, enlightening visit.

Carbine’s confidence grows for rebirth Mount Morgan Mine It’s been more than two decades since Mount Morgan has been home to a working mine, but Western Australian company Carbine Resources is remaining confident that history can repeat itself. The mining company is continuing in its bid to breathe new life into the old mine and Executive Director Patrick Walta says the team are growing more confident in the project each day. The Mount Morgan Argus recently caught up with Mr Walta to discuss Carbine’s efforts and the project’s progress. Argus: It’s been some time since we last spoke with you directly on the works to reopen the Mount Morgan Mine. Are you able to update our readers into how things are progressing? Patrick Walta: Carbine’s activities at the Mount Morgan Mine are progressing well. We are currently completing our final round of feasibility studies and a drilling program at the site in order to accurately determine the viability restarting operations. We plan to have these studies completed by mid-year. Argus: It’s to my understanding that movement is happening on the Mine at present in the sense that there is new and additional staff working on the site. What works are they carrying out at the moment? Patrick Walta: Carbine is currently assisting with the management of the water treatment plant on site. We are also completing some minor modifications to the plant to improve its performance, with the aim of reducing the level in the open pit and improving the quality of discharge water. This will ultimately assist with improving the overall health of the Dee River. Argus: There has been talk in the media of late into the potential of Carbine using the site’s pyrite. Is this still looking like a positive venture? Patrick Walta: Yes. Carbine has completed sufficient technical and commercial studies in order to sign a binding offtake agreement for the pyrite at the Mine. The pyrite is concentrated and exported overseas where it is used to make sulphuric acid. The sale of pyrite from the Mine not only assists with improving the economic viability of restarting operations, it also removes the source of the acid mine drainage from the site and therefore provides a significant environmental benefit. Argus: The last time we spoke, the company was looking into financial backing for the project. Are you able to update us on this? Patrick Walta: We are in discussions with several groups regarding the possible financing of the project. These discussions will continue as we progress the final feasibility work. We hope to have secured financing for the project in the second half of this year. Argus: You’ve mentioned that it was estimated that the site held up to a million ounces of gold and 80,000 tonnes of copper. Have these estimates altered at all? Patrick Walta: No they have not altered. We are currently completing a drilling program on site which will further assist in defining a portion of these resources to a proper standard suitable to obtain financing.
3
Argus: I suppose the million dollar question for many people is whether the Mine will definitely reopen. I understand it may still be too early to say, but how likely is it looking from Carbine’s view? Patrick Walta: Nothing is certain until we are able to secure financing and make that all important decision to mine. We are however growing in confidence each day. It has been a long road over the last few years and it is a testament to the abilities of our technical team to overcome all the hurdles we have encountered so far. Argus: If all is signed off and given the go ahead, do you still anticipate operations to commence this year? Patrick Walta: Subject to completing the final feasibility study and raising mine development finance, we are hoping to start construction activities this year and be in production next year. Argus: Is there still a likelihood of local employment. Patrick Walta: Yes. All employees of the project will be required to reside in Mount Morgan or the region. We are not planning on providing for any fly in fly out employment. Argus: If locals would like to get on the front foot with employment opportunities, what do you suggest doing? Patrick Walta: We are not currently assessing employment opportunities for the future mining activities. Once we have a clearer view on restarting operations there will be ample opportunity for locals to assess the various roles that will be on offer. Argus: Was there anything further you’d like to update our readers on? Patrick Walta: Keep an eye out for further developments around the success of the feasibility study. This is the next critical step for the project.

Regional event to dish out exciting opportunity
Japanese cattle, a Queensland beef supplier, a Regional event and two local businesses – it’s an intriguing and exciting combination and it’s what’s behind a brand new dish soon to be served at the Grand Hotel. The local business has been chosen to take part in an inaugural food event hosted by the Regional Promotions team of Rockhampton Regional Council.
‘It’s a Japanese beef known for its quality. It’s very high in marbling.” Paul said the beef sourced for the local dish has a marbing score of AA9+ - the highest possible.
Dubbed “Wholly Cow”, the event will celebrate the Rockhampton Region as the beef capital of Australia.
“The beef must be a score of 7+ to be called Kobe and must be from a genetic strain from the Kobe region in Japan... all in all, a very much a melt in your mouth steak. It’s highly sought after, very expensive - one of the most expensive cuts you can buy,” Paul said.
Through a series of consumer events, tours, presentations and competitions, Wholly Cow will see visitors and locals by the hundreds taste their way through the Region and try some of its best beef menus and dishes.
“We will be serving this dish on Sunday the 22nd of May. The Wholly Cow event goes throughout May but is made up of individual events at different venues. Our specific dish will be available and promoted for 22nd.
“Our favourite venues from around the Rockhampton Region have designed specialty beef events to delight the adventurous and traditional taste bud, suiting all budgets and lifestyles as part of Wholly Cow Month,” Regional Promotions said.
“It’s going to be great and I think being involved in this is a tribute to the hard effort of our team.”
“These signature events will showcase our standing as the Beef Capital of Australia, through gourmet consumer experiences and encourage food tourism into the region.” Mount Morgan’s Grand Hotel has recently been announced as one of the venues in the Regional lineup; and will be just one of five areas that will feature signature dishes. “As part of the planning we wanted to ensure that all parts of the Region were being showcased, from a heritage listed hotel in Mount Morgan to the tranquil setting of the Glenmore Homestead to the North,” Regional Promotions explained. “It was important to provide different locations and experiences to not only encourage local visitation to increase during the month, but also to encourage intrastate and interstate visitors. We hope that people will embrace the month of events and get out of their usual local areas to try something new.” So just what will the Grand team be dishing out? … “Kobe Wagyu,” Grand Hotel Manager Paul Walker announced.
Grand Hotel Head Chef Sue Clark said the Grand will be teaming up with IGA Mount Morgan sourcing the beef. “We get the majority of our meats for our dishes from IGA, Mount Morgan. We’ve been able to do the same with the Wagyu which will originally come from a Queensland supplier. “I’ve worked with Wagyu before but not this grade so am really excited for the event.”

Get out and get active Production with local ties to hit local stage Now’s the time to get outdoors with a range of free or low cost fitness sessions from Rockhampton Regional Council and the Queensland Government’s Get Out, Get Active program. Starting Friday 1 April, Council’s sport and recreation unit and Kickstart CQ will be working with local fitness providers to deliver free boot camp and aquafit sessions in Mount Morgan. Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Get Out, Get Active program was one more step in the right direction to helping our community live healthy and active lifestyles. “Get Out, Get Active is another great program we’ll be coordinating with the help of local fitness providers to ensure our community continues to learn and actively participate in a healthy lifestyle,” Cr Rutherford said. “We’ve combined the fitness side with our great outdoors to bring people together in one of Mount Morgan’s bestloved open spaces, The Number 7 Dam, along with aquafit sessions at the Mount Morgan pool. “I’m really encouraging people who need a little push in the right direction to give it a go as there’s no doubt the sessions will be fun, and in a supportive and social setting. “I’m hoping Council will kickstart the journey and participants will then transition to other fitness programs at their local gym or sporting club for example.” This program is a funded initiative of Rockhampton Regional Council and Queensland Government's Get Out! Get Active program.

After discovering that many pieces of sheet music with a common lyricist had been published in Rockhampton by the Record Printing Company as early as 1917, Janet Stevenson was compelled to look further to find the story behind the name. The stage production, The Optimist, follows the life and times of Mr Ezra Thomas Shorley, one time resident of Mount Morgan, Upper Ulam and Rockhampton. Immigrant, labourer, farmer, councillor, recruiting sergeant, poet, song writer, hawker and all-round battler during the first half of the 20th century, E.T. Shorley was a man with ideas, with vision, with determination. The course of his life has been chronicled in the newspapers of the time. They reveal a real character who experienced loss and hardship but was never tempted to give in. Despite having two sons go off to World War I and two more to World War II, ET was an optimist! With script by Janet Stevenson of Rockhampton and directed by Rod Ainsworth of Bundaberg, The Optimist promises an experience of yesteryear through words, music and images. In particular, it includes songs with music by Miss Helena Miller, a former music teacher and musician in the early days of Mount Morgan. The cast of local talent is comprised of Kerry Kay, Ivan Richardson, David Sinnamon, Laura Galley, Jodie van de Wetering with David Bell and Chris Withoos from the 9th Infantry Reenactment Unit. Three productions in Rockhampton, Mount Morgan and Emu Park will be performed around Anzac Day. It will be coming to the Mount Morgan School of Arts on Saturday April 23, commencing at 7pm. These productions are supported by RADF grants from both Rockhampton Regional Council and Livingstone Shire Council. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between Queensland Government through Arts Queensland with these councils to support local arts and culture. For more information, please contact Janet on 0448 285319.

Countdown is on for the 2016 Golden Mount Festival
With under a month to go, Mount Morgan’s premier event is promising to provide a range of family oriented activities. However, before the festival gets underway, there is still one event to go. The Golden Mount Festival Association in conjunction with Bel Canto Singing and Music Academy will host the “Music from the Movies” night at the Mount Morgan School of Arts starting from 6.30 pm on April 9. It only costs $5 for entry or $15 for a family (2 adults and 2 or more children). If you can’t sing a note... but like to be on stage, you can enter the Lip Sync Competition. There are some great prizes on offer and it only costs two dollars to enter...and you don’t even have to sing! Plans and strategies The Golden Mount Festival Association received sponsorship from Rockhampton Regional Council (RRC) to undertake a Business Plan and Marketing Strategy. RRC recognises the Golden Mount Festival as one of the major iconic events in the region that has proven the test of time. These plans are living, breathing documents that will guide our way for the next five years and will help the Association secure additional funding from external sources to help build and grow the festival. Implementation of the first five strategies – branding, new website design, media consultancy, social media strategy and implementation and the production of some professional images of both the festival and the Mount Morgan Community began a week ago and will be in place for the 2016 festival. Promotions and marketing is a long term activity and the results are not always immediate, but they pay off in the long run. The Golden Mount Festival Association sincerely thanks the Rockhampton Regional Council for their continued support of this long-surviving event. Golden Army Members were recently presented with their T-Shirts – gold in colour, with a blue logo (the town’s colours are blue and gold) – and will now be recognisable as part of the Golden Mount Festival’s Golden Army in celebration of our golden heritage. Junior Members and Life Members The Golden Mount Festival Association recently changed its rule to admit two new classes of members – junior members (over 12, but under 18 years) and Life Members (anyone who has made a substantial contribution of five or more consecutive years of membership. Vice President Aaron was responsible for the idea of admitting Junior Members to the Association, to help prepare and encourage young people to become actively involved in the community. If you are a young member of the community and would like to join, make sure you ask your parents to sign your membership application!
Life membership was introduced to acknowledge the significant contribution by many community members. If you know of someone who meets the requirement of five or more consecutive years service, phone Secretary, Cass Donald on 0407 825764 and nominate the former member. ...And Now... on with the show

Hi Argus readers, We hope you all had a wonderful Easter. It’s a little scary at how fast this year is going and that we are already into April! But on a positive note, that also means there isn’t long left until the 2016 Golden Mount Festival! It’s sure to be another fantastic weekend. Speaking of events… It’s a little way off yet but we are looking to host the 2016 Silver Wattle Day in September. The date is still pending, but at present we are looking at the 4th of September (also Father’s Day). Watch this space for further details!
Rail Museum visit:
On Thursday the 24th of March, ten residents from Village Life in Dean Street Rockhampton joined the staff at the Railway Museum and Tourist Information Centre for a Devonshire Tea. Managers of Village Life Kevin and Mika Humphreys try to take their residents out and about at least every month, and after visiting Mount Morgan the day before and seeing what the town had to offer, they booked a Museum Tour and a TMC Town and Mine Tour. Village Life has 53 residents in total and Kevin said they will definitely be back with some more residents in the future. Winner! Congratulations to local resident Nell Shaw who is the lucky winner of our recent raffle! A very big thanks to all who purchased tickets and to our hardworking team member Melray who organised the raffle and spent many hours selling tickets. A special thanks also to IGA Mount Morgan’s Hugh McGilvray for drawing our winner (pictured). The funds from this raffle helped our organisation’s recent restock of the Mount Morgan Dam, which saw over 8,000 Golden Perch fingerlings released in our local waterway.

Child restraints and seatbelts Mount Morgan police are reminding motorists of the appropriate use of child restraints and seatbelts. Not wearing seatbelts is one of the fatal five and people need to make buckling up second nature. It’s a simple fact of life that seatbelts do save lives. Police will issue tickets to drivers for failing to wear a seatbelt, and also to drivers who fail to ensure their passengers under the age of 16 are secure. Passengers over 16 can also be fined if they fail to wear a seat belt. The penalty amount is $353.00, with a loss of 3 demerit points. People travelling with children need to ensure that they are using the correct types of child restraints used. It is also important to ensure that your child restraints comply with the Australian standards. The appropriate restraint of babies and children are: Babies aged zero to 6 months must be secured in an approved rearward facing baby capsule or infant restraint that is properly fastened and adjusted. Babies and children aged between 6 months and 4 years of age must be secured in either an approved rearward facing child restraint or an approved forward facing child restraint with built-in harness that is properly fastened and adjusted. It is recommended that a baby remain in an approved infant restraint for as long as possible. Children who have reached 4 years of age must be secured in an approved booster seat with a H-harness or a booster seat with a secured adult lap/sash seatbelt that is properly fastened and adjusted. The child must be secured in this manner up until they turn 7. • If your child is too small to move into the next level of restraint, you should keep your child in the lower level restraint for as long as possible. (ie: a child who has turned 4 but is too small for a booster seat should remain in a forward facing child restraint with a built-in harness). • If your child is too large to fit into a child restraint specified for your child's age, your child may move into the next level of restraint. A child is too tall for a booster seat when the level of the child’s eyes is above the level of the back of the booster seat. Remember, “Be safe and buckle up”. Further information can be obtained from the Queensland Police Service website www.police.qld.gov.au or www.racq.com
Nutmeg Mannikins are a type of finch. They are also known as a Spice Finch. They are an introduced species and originate from Southern Asia, from India, Southern China and even the Phillipines and Indonesia. They are believed to have colonised Australia as escapees from aviaries. The juveniles are a plain buff-brown on their underparts, the upper parts are chestnut brown. The adults also have chestnut brown upper parts, but have a very dark brown face and throat. The underparts of the adult are scalloped brown. They make a very large woven grass nest and usually lay four eggs. Nutmegs are seed eaters, and are usually found around human habitation. They prefer wetter areas, roadsides, lantana, disturbed land and crops that grow in moist areas. The babies grow very fast- from nestlings to fledgelings in a few weeks. This week we received four baby Nutmegs in one nest, and one in another. If you find babies in their nests, please do not disturb them. The most qualified to raise them are their parents!

Plaques serve as longterm reminder of local dedication On Friday the 1st April 2016, another two memorial plaques were placed on the Railway Museum Memorial Wall. Over thirty family members, friends and present and retired volunteers gathered to recognise the service that Matthew Izenbert and George Dans gave to the Railway. Mick Izenbert was present to see his father Matthew Izenbert’s plaque placed on the wall and to receive a certificate in remembrance of the occasion. Mick’s father was a fettler in Rockhampton for over 10 years. The name George Albert Dans would be familiar to many people and his wife Maureen, son John and many family members were present to pay tribute to a man who had devoted over 18 years’ service to the Railway both as an employee and as a valued volunteer at the Mount Morgan Railway Station.

George was a Steam Operator and trains were in his blood. President of Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. John Steinberger spoke of George’s devotion to the Railway Complex and how grateful everyone was for all that he and Maureen had contributed over the years. The families gathered together on the Railway Complex to enjoy a delicious morning tea and reminisce about old times. Railway Museum Coordinator Rhonda Ramm said that they were pleased to provide the plaque in George’s memory. MMPAD sincerely thanked everyone for attending the event.
Remembering Edna O’Brien Edna Doreen Ware daughter of Annie Ware was born in Mount Morgan on the 14th December 1934 and had five siblings – Tom, Alan, Max, Des and Noel. When Edna was a child she missed a lot of school due to illness, then when her Mother went out to work Edna stayed at home to look after her younger siblings. Her family moved to Bouldercombe when she was very young then the family moved back to Mount Morgan just before Edna’s teen years. Edna married William John O’Brien and they purchased a house at 27 Coronation Drive Mount Morgan which meant they were neighbours to Edna’s Mother who lived at 29 Coronation Drive. At least they didn’t have far to carry Edna’s belongings. Edna and Bill had five children – Carmel, Lance, Alan, Rodney and Greg, eleven granddhildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren. Edna and Bill would attend the local dances at Bouldercombe and Mount Morgan every weekend and always took the children with them. In fact the boys formed a band and used to play at the local pubs. Edna was always active in the community including her love the Frail and Aged Group or Day Care as it was also known, which she was a member of since 1977. This group met every Thursday until its closure over 35 years later. In fact Freda McDougal, Maureen Daniels and Edna were often thought of as the backbone of the Group. At the same period of time every Monday Edna also took her place with the Slim Trims Family who have recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary. Slim Trims along with Frail & Aged created a loving support environment for anyone who joined. Edna was a well-known cook around town and her Christmas cakes and peach blossoms, tarts and much more were extremely sort after and Edna could often be seen at markets and street stalls selling her creations and she delighted in specialised orders.
Whether you loved her or not everyone had a memory of some good part of Edna. Betty & Frank Ware said “Edna was a good mother and would do anything for her children”. Fred McDougal said “Edna was at home in the Frail and Aged Kitchen and a wonderful cook” and Maureen Daniels said, “a kind and loving friend and we always got along like a house on fire”. Just over 16 months ago Edna’s health began to fail and she passed away on the 17th March 2016 after a full and happy life. A special thanks to everyone at Slim Trims, the community of Mount Morgan and all that knew Mum. Thanks for all the support and the warm wishes in this trying time. We will sadly miss you Mum. All our love Rod, Terri and Darren.

Medical research institute named after local pioneer couple Anyone who is familiar with the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney would know the Kolling Building next to the main public entrance of the hospital. Officially opened in 2008, it houses the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, named after local pioneers, Charles and Eva Kolling. Charles Kolling was born in Pennsylvania in 1858 to Frederick Charles and Charlotte Kolling. His father was a farmer. As a young man, he migrated from the United States to the Colony of New South Wales. He married Yorkshire-born Eva Burge in Sydney in 1886. The newlyweds resettled in Mount Morgan. Charles Kolling secured employment as an engineer at the newly-formed Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company (‘the Mining Company’). Charles Kolling is pictured in about 1890 in Mount Morgan (back right) with fellow employees. Two other men in the photograph can be identified: chief builder, T.G. Cornes (1842-1903) (back left) and Captain G. A. Richard (1861-1943), manager of the chlorination treatment works (front right). (Photograph by courtesy of Jeanette Roughley, great-granddaughter of T.G. Cornes). Former Mount Morgan Limited engineer, Dr Ray Boyle, suggests that Charles Kolling was responsible for the construction and operation of the aerial tram, which brought the ore from the mountain top to the works. It commenced operation in January 1888. “The aerial tram was used extensively in America and, as Kolling was American, perhaps he was experienced in the construction of this type of machinery and was brought to Mount Morgan for his expertise,” Dr Boyle said. ‘I once read an account by a journalist in which he said he had been amazed that Kolling had boarded one of the buckets on the aerial tram and invited him to join him on the ride up the mountain - an invitation he refused,’ he added. A Freemason in Pennsylvania, Charles Kolling was a foundation member of the Mount Morgan Lodge No. 763. He affiliated with the Lodge on 18 August 1888. He is recorded in the Lodge register as a 32 year old engineer of Mount Morgan. Charles Kolling held high offices with the Mount Morgan Lodge. He was the Right Worshipful Master in 1890-91 and awarded District Grand Lodge honours in 1890. Historical records indicate that the Kollings left Mount Morgan in the early 1890s. Charles Kolling worked on further engineering projects, including the Great Cobar copper mine in New South Wales.
He also became a successful businessman in Sydney. He was the Managing Director of Link-Belt, a branch of an American company which produced detachable chain links for chain belts. Charles Kolling died on 21 January 1926 (aged 68) on Sydney’s North Shore, where the Kollings had resided since the 1890s. He was survived by his wife. The pair did not have any children. Eva Kolling made a generous donation to build a laboratory in Sydney in memory of her late husband. The Sydney Morning Herald reported on 22 September 1931: ‘The Charles Kolling Memorial Laboratory, Royal North Shore Hospital, opened a week ago, was made possible by a gift of £5000 by Mrs. Eva Kolling, in memory of her husband, augmented by private donations’. A benefactor of several other organisations, Eva Kolling was awarded an OBE for her charity work in 1939. She passed away on 24 May 1941 (aged 74) on Sydney’s North Shore. Today the Kolling Institute is the oldest medical research institute in New South Wales. The Kolling name is in giant letters on the Kolling Building for all to see. Whenever I see the name on the building, I am reminded of the Kollings in colonial Mount Morgan and Charles Kolling’s bucket ride up the mountain on the aerial tram. Article by Catherine McIntosh, Sydney resident and descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan.

Local Celebrations 60th Wedding Anniversary
It’s not every day the postie brings letters of congratulations to Mount Morgan residents from Heads of State. However a 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary is a special occasion. On 2nd April 2016 William and Dulcie Stacey celebrated their 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary and the Postie delivered letters of congratulations from the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and Their Excellencies General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove and a special message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Dulcie and William were married in the St. Augnataus Catholic Church at Oberon in New South Wales. Originally they lived in Marlborough then moved to Cawarral and eventually settled in Mount Morgan 11 years ago. Proud parents of four children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren Dulcie and Bill as he is known love living in Mount Morgan and are glad they decided to retire here. When asked what the secret to a long marriage was they replied, “Be happy with one another, enjoy a happy life and rarely fight. We do everything together”.
