Mount Morgan stocks up for future fishing The Mount Morgan Dam is brimming of late – and it isn’t just thanks to recent rainfall. The local waterways recently became the new home to thousands of fingerlings. Last Saturday Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated (MMPAD) released more than 8,500 golden perch (yellowbelly) fingerlings into the Mount Morgan Dam. The official release saw members of the local organisation, staff of Hanwood Fish Hatchery, along with members of the Mount Morgan community happily grab a bucket and introduce the fingerlings to local waters. With ample food, shelter and water, the Mount Morgan Dam is set to provide a perfect habitat for the new inhabitants. The fingerlings were released in various areas around the dam’s perimeter, placed in sheltered shallows for further protection from predators and strong currents.

Most local residents are familiar with the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust that was founded when Eliza, wife of Walter denoted one million pounds to establish this Trust in 1912 after Walter’s death. Walter had been a very wealthy man with a huge shareholding in Mount Morgan Gold and Mining Company and Cobb and Co. Coaches in Victoria. Eliza was and maybe still is the greatest single female donor of our time. The Trust has assisted many Australians since its inception and a major donation in 1915 saw the establishment of the Walter and Eliza Institute for Medical Research which is now part of the Royal Melbourne hospital. Extensive research is performed on many medical diseases of our present times. This Trust receives support from a number of very generous benefactors and Foundations. In response for growing demand for assistance from families and individuals, in 1986 the Trustees set up The Walter and Eliza Hall Supplementary Trust. Again donations came from generous benefactors. With further increases for assistance a recent imitative was the formation of THE SURVIVAL FUND. This Fund is the banner under which donations from the General public can assist with demands for assistance by poverty stricken people. The full amount of every donation is passed on to the beneficiaries as costs for the Survival Fund are kept to a minimum and there is no administration costs levied against donations. This is because some wonderful retired bank managers, lawyers, CEO of companies and others form the Trustees Board with all honorary positions. Their years of experience are invaluable. Over 300 grants have been provided to desperate families in the past year. All applications are extensively investigated before any donations are made as applicants have to be affected by poverty and find themselves in a crisis. It is heartbreaking that for many Australians a real crisis is, literally, just a step away. One donation of $1843 was given to a family for the purchase of a Bathmaster for the two sons who suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Nick, a sufferer from autism and associated communications difficulties was given a computer to assist with his education and also reduces the tension and stress in the home. Bill has 2 prosthetic legs and received money for a Scooter which has lightened his moods and allows him to be independent of others for assistance. So the list goes on. To Eliza Hall a big Thank You for her foresight as one could never imagine what good work her donation has achieved. We do not have the wealth of Eliza but if we THINK CLEAN – Be TIDY we are also doing good work for our Town.

With its recent beautification, its full capacity and its newly established playground and barbeque areas – the Mount Morgan Dam has seen a number of impressive changes of late. This month saw another exciting introduction to the area, with thousands of fingerlings released into its waters. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development released over 8,500 golden perch (yellowbelly) fingerlings on Saturday February 2nd, joined by staff of Hanwood Fish Hatchery and members of the Mount Morgan community. The release is part of a five year management plan, established by MMPAD and Fisheries Queensland. The program aims to see the Mount Morgan Dam stocked with native species each year; increasing local fish stocks and enhancing the recreational fishing experience of the local community and the area’s visitors.

Taking the plunge: Mount Morgan’s fish stocks receive a big boost, as thousands of fingerlings are released into the local waterway.

The 65mm fingerlings were lovingly reared by the Cluff Family from Hanwood Fish Hatchery, located at Murgon. Member of the Hatchery, Craig Cluff, said the fingerlings are expected to reach legal catching size next summer. “You’re looking at around 18 months for the fish to reach 30cm, and be the legal catching size,” he said. For those eager to try their luck earlier however, a number of prior releases are fit for catching, with others nearing their required size– with over 7,000 golden perch fingerlings released into the Dam last year, along with eel-tailed catfish and silver perch introduced the year prior. The 2013 release marked the third year of restocking for MMPAD, with future suggested stocks set to include further golden perch releases, along with saratoga and sleepy cod. The 2013 stocking was made possible through the generous support of the Mount Morgan community through local fundraising as well as kind sponsorship provided by Norton Goldfields, the Mount Morgan Rotary Club and Division 2 Representative for the Rockhampton Regional Council, Councillor Tom Wyatt. MMPAD sincerely thanks all for their interest and support of this project and those who assisted in the release on Saturday. A special thanks to John Hehir also for his assistance on the day. Further details regarding the restocking and the fishing management plan for the Mount Morgan Dam can be obtained from Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. by phoning: 49 382 333 or emailing: mmpad@bigpond.com

Ready for the release: John Steinberger and John Hehir head out on the Dam to release a number of the fingerlings.

Quick facts about the Dam’s newest inhabitants:

• Yellowbelly or Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua oriens) - Fitzroy/Dawson strain, are a revered angling and table species of freshwater fish found within the Fitzroy Dawson River system of Queensland and a subspecies of the Golden Perch found around the country. • Golden Perch form the backbone of the inland fishing in Australia. They are willing takers of baits including crayfish, shrimps and worms. • They are also lure takers with spinnerbaits and trolled deep diving lures gaining more popularity. They can often be found in large schools in both river and lake situations. • Eating qualities vary depending upon the waters they are caught from and the size of the fish. Larger fish are often very fatty along the top of the back.

Last month’s severe weather resulted in a number of extensive landslips on the Mount Morgan Range. Currently, this site is closed to all public access. The Department of Transport and Main Roads announced that the site is being cleared of earth slips and debris; with a full geotechnical assessment to follow. A Departmental spokesperson released the following statement to the Argus last Friday: “The Department of Transport and Main Roads is clearing extensive earth slips and other debris from damaged sections of the Mount Morgan Range after a large number of landslips occurred following recent heavy rainfall. Clearing the earth and debris will then allow a full geotechnical assessment of the range to be completed. “At this stage, the Mount Morgan Range is closed indefinitely, however following completion of the geotechnical assessment, TMR will have a better understanding of how long the damage will take to repair and to have the road reopened to traffic.” In the meantime, the department acknowledges an increased traffic using Razorback Road, and encourages motorists to drive safely and to the conditions. Please see the next issue of the Mount Morgan Argus for further details. Below: Images presenting some the damage to the Mount Morgan Range following recent heavy rainfall. Well folks, this Thursday marks Valentine’s Day! Love it, or hate it, the Argus wants to know your thoughts on the annual event.

“What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day?”

Name: Schae Page

“It’s a good time of year to be reminded of how you should appreciate your loved ones. We all lead busy lives, so we need to be reminded.”

Happy birthday to Irene Ramm (Jeffries), who celebrates her 60th birthday on the 13th of February. Love from Norm & Family. Pictured: Irene (left) and twin sister Lorraine Johnson of Mount Morgan.

Name: Kym Roberts

“I love it! I think it’s a beautiful thing. Though I think it should be more than once a year - there should be more love in the world.”

Name: Codie Evans

“Valentine’s is the perfect time to put aside pride and self restraints, to tell the one you’re crushing on/ loving or anywhere in between - that you admire them, and you’d love for them to know that. No strings.”

Name: Karhl Henselien

“It can be a bit of a catch 22 - if you have someone special in your life, it’s great but if you don’t have someone it can be a bit of a bummer. Though it can also be a good opportunity to try and woo someone.”

Congatulations to Norm and Irene Ramm, who celebrate 40 years of marriage on the third of March, 2013.

Email: mmpad@bigpond.com

Fast fact about Valentine’s Day: One of the most common tales associated with the origins of Valentine’s Day is that of a mysterious Saint and the actions he carried out when others dared not. It’s said that during the reign of Claudius II, it was decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families; seeing marriage outlawed for young men. The legend tells that Valentine saw the decree as unjust and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Sadly, it’s said that after a time, these actions were discovered; seeing the end for the valiant Valentine.

The 2013 Golden Mount Festival will be held on Friday the 3rd, Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of May. Early programme details: Friday evening: The usual family fun day (routinely scheduled on the Monday) will now be incorporated in an event set to be held on the Friday evening. This will be the official opening of the Golden Mount Festival and will kick off at 5pm. Currently we are hoping to incorporate fireworks, floating lanterns, kids’ rides, food and some fantastic entertainment to the evening’s programme – an exciting way to officially open the annual festivities! More on the 2013 GMF: Saturday and Sunday Program: Saturday’s festivities and Sunday’s Rodeo are still set for as normal for the 2013 celebrations. 2013 Festival Theme: The theme of the 2013 Golden Mount Festival is “One town, many cultures”. We would like to encourage the use of recycled material to decorate your floats – with a special prize expected for the most creative use of these items. Stall sites: We would like to encourage all interested stall holders to contact the Festival Committee as soon as possible, for details on available applications. Competitions: Plus don’t forget Saturday’s competitions! This year’s festival will only see two major competitions held on the Saturday – the Dig for Gold and the Running of the Cutter. 14 Well, it’s February – which means many of those New Year Resolutions to get fit and active are either well underway... or slowly disappearing into oblivion. If the latter is more the case for you at the moment, then worry not – assistance to see your fitness levels boosted this year may be closer than you expected. Perhaps, at the Mount Morgan Swimming Pool complex... Along with offering swimming as a way to keep active, the local complex now also hosts a number of specified fitness programs – offering aqua aerobics and boxercise classes each week. Last week, we caught up with Mount Morgan Swimming Pool Venue Manager and certified lifeguard and personal trainer, Jason Nolan, for details on the new classes: “First of all, the classes are a lot of fun,” Jason said. “A lot of people are put off when they hear about fitness classes- many think it will be scary and it’s not exactly something they want to approach with open arms.” “But the classes are carried out in a relaxed, social environment.” He said. Varying in their focus, Jason said the new classes are sure to offer something to suit everyone’s interest. “The boxercise classes centre on cardiovascular routines and muscle building exercises,” he said.

The new routines also offer one-on-one training if requested, along with the possibility of a children’s class. Further information: • Aqua aerobics class is offered from 9:30am – 10:30 am, from Monday to Friday. • Boxercise is available from 4pm – 5pm, Mondays, Tuesday and Fridays. • Costs involved are $10 per session. • Please note when attending boxercise activities, footwear is essential. • The pool is open from 7:30am – 5:30pm Monday to Friday, and 12noon – 4pm Saturday and Sunday. For further details, please phone: 4938 1500 or see Jason directly at the Mount Morgan Swimming pool, located in Thompson Avenue. Pictured right: Some of the boxercise routine in action. Below: Jason Nolan; Venue Manager at the Swimming Pool and certified personal trainer. Jason is conducting fitness classes each week at the local complex – available to all interested.

“They also enhance coordination, flexibility and stamina.” Deriving its name from its routines, boxercise classes are based on the kinds of exercises boxers use to keep fit. Classes can take a variety of formats but typically involve hitting pads, skipping and shuttle runs. “The aqua aerobics mostly focus on low impact, low intensity exercises,” Jason said. “Don’t let that fool you though – it a great way to get fit and keep active.” Jason said the main aim of both classes is to provide opportunity for all to get active and have fun while doing it – with no experience needed. “When it comes to getting fit or starting a class, it’s really not about experience levels or age, but a positive approach. “A good attitude towards it is all you need.”

From Dirty Water A poem by Frank Clark

A car full to see the dee run a banker said there is enough material to make a poem for the paper the head of the dee where the rain did start 500 millimetres from the sky gave the poem its first part Struck oil is placed on the world map when the first of the water in number 7 dam is trapped all the water that followed over the spillway went on its journey to rocky it was hell bent On the 24th number 7 dam filled quick and fast spilling ever higher with a roaring blast on the rapid waves a white froth foam in a constant desire for its final Fitzroy river home Undermined and put on a tilt a large empty sewerage tank this may come as a surprise the Dee River was first called the Stanks about 1854 the Dee and the Don were named by Norman Leith Hay after the names of two rivers in England many miles away The torrent went straight ahead with great force to a height of two weather boards on the quarters of course cut red hill road by a two to three metre flow then to Red Hill, Queen Street was the only way to go Over several days there was a similar repeat of rain trying its best to beat the 1928 flood record again Mrs Brecknell in 1928 lived in a house on the flat at Talban the flood at its peak lifted the house off the stumps and sat it down upon My pen is directed to write about dirty water in lines a total of 28 and making a comparison of the flood in 1928 there must be no dirt or mud on the point of my pen or the readers will not ask me to write a poem again Please note: due to formatting, we were unable to adhere to the correct presentation of 28 lines for Frank’s poem. Thai Fish Cakes © 2013 by Mountain Mick Blake the Mountain Griller Oh man, that was some rain we had. I started to think I was in Thailand in a monsoon forest… so my mind wandered and my thoughts drifted to fish cakes, not just any old fish cake, by those lovely Thai Fish Cakes with that lovely curry taste and that zest bite of lime. Next minute, I was buying fresh fish fillet and had a lime in my hand. Dream can become reality. This is my take on Thai Fish Cakes, I think I’ve done them proud. I hope you love them as much as we do. - Mountain Mick

Ingredients: 1kg firm white flesh fish (such as ling, snapper, catfish, cod or flake) - coarsely chopped, NO BONES 1 garlic clove, quartered 1 ½ tbs lime zest finely shredded /grated 1 cup coarsely chopped fresh green shallots 1 cup coarsely chopped red capsicum 1 tbs fish sauce 2 tbs mild curry powder or 3 tbs of red curry paste 1 ½ cups of bread crumbs 2 large eggs Pinch of salt & pepper 5 (about 30g) green beans, thinly sliced Peanut oil, or sunflower oil to shallow-fry (not olive oiltoo much flavor in it) Ingredients - dipping sauce 60g (1/4 cup) white sugar 60ml (1/4 cup) fresh lime juice 1 tbs fish sauce, extra 1/2 Lebanese cucumber, de-seeded, finely chopped 1 small fresh red birdseye chilli: de-seeded, thinly sliced (optional) Wedges lime, extra to garnish Method: Add fish, green onions/eschollots, red capsicum, mild curry powder or red curry paste, eggs, fish sauce, lime zest, garlic, salt & pepper, green beans all in the food processor and blitz until the fish mix is a fined paste and all green & red bits a are fine. Now, add the bread crumbs until the paste balls (that is as the blades in the food processor spin the mixture starts to ball up and spin with the blades). Now roll into balls and flatten them to about ½ inch thick (12mm). Roll them in bread crumbs (cover with the plain bread crumbs) and then shallow fry in hot oil. Drain on paper towel and serve - I do homemade Thai fishcakes (curried but not hot) with steamed Basmati rice, Asian Veggies, Vietnamese dipping sauce & wedges of Lime. Very yummy. I would think a nice fruit dry white wine would match up well or an ice cold Miller Chill, light lime beer. Please enjoy. P.S: Yes, you can add chillies , I normally do but my wife asked for a chilli free meal. Plus you can add coarsely chopped fresh coriander but again, my wife hates fresh coriander so I left it out.
