History & Reflections
Pride in your Town Back to a little piece of history this time but not about Mount Morgan but our neighbours Wowan and Dululu. While Mount Morgan was enjoying the prosperity of gold mining Wowan and Dululu were also flourishing but with different industries. Wowan district had very energetic and foreword thinking people and worked very hard at their jobs.
All eggs were sent to the Central Queensland Egg marketing board in Rockhampton as free range eggs but later it became a caged birds business.
While many folk settled for farming in the area Wowan can also boast of a cotton ginnery. The ginnery was built in 1922 by a British Australian Company. It comprised 3 buildings and water came from a good supply from a well. In its first year of production 12 million pounds of seed cotton was processed. At that time it was said to be the largest Ginnery in Australia. In 1927 it was sold and relocated to Glenmore, Rockhampton.
In Wowan and district’s hey days as well as the above their township had 2 hotels, café and store, butcher, drapery, service station, sawmill, hardware, Post Office, CREB office, open air picture theatre and of course the Railway station played a big part in the life of the town. It was a progressive little area. Sadly many other little places like Wowan have decreased in population also.
Another industry was the butter factory which was opened on the 1st April 1919. During a good season the butter found markets in both Mount Morgan and Rockhampton but a huge proportion of the output was exported to London under the brand name “Deeford” as pasteurised butter was in high demand. Times changed and other countries came on to the market causing the Wowan factory to cease production in 1969. Also In 1955 and 56 many families in the area decided to go in to being egg producers. With many farmers growing their own grain and grinding it in their hammer mills and then with the addition of hay and meat meal a very nutritious laying mash was produced.
Wowan was the only place where egg producers had an automatic egg conveyor belt that transported the eggs to the collection point. Egg production continued till 1988.
While Wowan was only a small settlement many of its original people later became very important in Mount Morgan and Rockhampton business. Just two examples of many were Les Duthie of Leichardt Hotel management and Dick Mc Neven in the car industry and his interest in public affairs. While the list is too large for this column it is impossible not to mention the sporting personnel who were outstanding in many fields, of tennis, golf, cricket, bowls etc. Wowan can also be proud of many personnel receiving war honours. Most of this information was taken from “The Wowan and District Centenary Book” which I was lucky to find. Think Clean – Be Tidy..
Eisler’s Patent Float
By Graeme Meade from Collectables and Memories on East Street I was at a garage sale one day last year, I picked up this bottle, if that is what it is, because the top looks like it is sealed with glass, I was wondering what it was used for. The lady of the house came over and told me her son had used it for his science projects; it looked a bit different so I bought it. A few weeks later I was walking around the shop talking to an elderly gentleman, he picked up the bottle and asked me if I knew what it was. I said I didn’t, he told me it is a toilet float!!! Well he is right, it has Eisler’s Patent embossed into the glass, so I asked some more questions and did some research, it is a glass toilet float. These were used in flushing toilets up until the end of World War 2; they then started to use brass then plastic ones. The float gets connected around the neck to a copper or brass pipe, it sits neck up in the toilet cistern, when the water empties out, the drops, as the water fills the cistern the float rises until the correct water level is reached, then shuts off. Flush toilets have been around for hundreds of years, but the cistern design that used floats started in the 1850s. The glass floats were hand blown at first, the Eisler’s ones probably relate to a patent by Charles Eisler he invented the technique of sealing glass bottles (instead of using a stopper). This float is pressed glass, it is about 14 cm tall and 11 cm wide. They were made in clear and beer bottle brown.

Funding For Mount Morgan Facilities
Mount Morgan residents may be wondering what all the activity is about at the local football field. The works at Newman Oval are to install underground irrigation to the rugby field, supplied with treated effluent from Fitzroy River Water. Previously the field has been irrigated with an above ground, mobile sprinkler.
On the 7th February, Rockhampton Regional Council endorsed two Mount Morgan projects to be submitted to the State Government for funding as part of the Queensland Government’s Work for Queensland Program. The two projects are: painting of Welfare House ($153,000) and upgrades of toilets facilities at Boyd Park ($100,000).

The Orange Dot Movie Review By Larry at Fox Video Most of us have had life-threatening events/encounters in our childhood that could well have been final, but the disasters that have struck young Louis Drax in just the first nine years of his life are truly incredible. So when Louis plunges off a steep, very high cliff on his ninth birthday, it is not the first time in his short life that he has faced his own mortality. Even now, after such a long and terrible fall he is not dead. His little body has taken a beating and he is in a coma but he seems to be mending, yet again. As the police investigate the bizarre circumstances that have placed him in this coma, unconventional neurologist Dr Allen Pascal attempts to tap into the boy’s unconscious mind. With Louis’ father Peter absent, Dr Pascal is also drawn close to the boy’s mother Natalie as he delves into the mystery of Louis’ remarkable, amazing ability to cheat death over and over again. The genius of the story is in the writing. You begin your acquaintance with Louis Drax not knowing that your sight is veiled, and as you travel with this young boy through his story your vision gradually becomes clearer as each veil is removed one by one, ultimately to learn the secret of Louis Drax. At no time did we feel we were being clumsily manipulated. This story, this film is masterfully done. Starring Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey), Sarah Gadon (11.22.63, Dracula Untold), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and the always wonderful Oliver Platt, The 9th Life of Louis Drax is from the best-selling novel by Liz Jensen and is directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension). THE 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX is an intensely haunting thriller driven by obsession, intrigue and the power of the mind... Loved it!
Wildlife Matters By Trish Mathers - Phone 04005 91504
A few weeks ago we received a call from John Hehir to say a Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo had been sitting in a tree for 4 days, in the heat, with a broken wing. John had been trying unsuccessfully to rescue the bird, but she was way way up in a tree and had no intention of moving. Greg went out to help. They tried slinging a rope around the branch and shaking it wildly, but to no avail. The Cockatoo was higher up than a telegraph pole, and there was no way of getting that high, not to mention that massively powerful beak that awaited the rescuer! After 3 1/2 hours of attempting everything they could think of, including water blasting, nothing would dislodge her, so a decision was made to call our local firies. Dave Grundy, to whom we owe a really big thank-you, arrived in the fire truck. His ladder luckily was long enough to reach that high. The branch the cockatoo was sitting on was sawn through, with Greg waiting below with our rescue net, gloves and carry box. She was immediately caught and came into care. Then came the realisation that she was only a juvenile, and would rely on her parents (which they do for 4 years!). We let her rest until the next day and took her to the vets for x-rays. She had fractures on both sides of her wings joint. We decided to bring her home rather than wait for the vet to liase with specialists regarding pinning her fractures; as being a baby we had to try to feed her. We have had great success with birds with fractures just letting them rest in a small cage for 3 weeks. Having hollow bones they mend very quickly. I managed to get a little Lectade into her, but trying to feed her was a frightening experience! I just couldn’t get close enough to her to get a crop needle down her throat. She managed to grab hold of it in that massive beak and that is as good as it got! Luckily after a couple of days her parents found her. She cheered right up and started eating seed and native seeds and branches on her own. Every day her parents and her sibling arrived to check on her. After 3 weeks she was successfully released and flew off with her family! A few hours later the family circled our house a number of times, showing us she was o.k. They showed up again this morning and sat in the tree for a couple of hours, eating seeds from the white cedar tree. It is wonderful to see her doing well. A really big thank-you to Dave Grundy from our local fire brigade, and to John Hehir for their efforts in rescuing this beautiful bird.

ASX / MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT
09 February, 2017
Key Approval Applications Lodged for the Mount Morgan Gold & Copper Project Carbine Resources Limited (ASX:CRB) is pleased to advise that it has taken a key step towards production at its Mount Morgan Gold-Copper Project in Queensland, with the submission of two approval applications to the State authorities. A development application seeking a Regional Interests Development Approval regarding resource activities in a Priority Living Area (PLA) was lodged last month. The development application was lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning under the Regional Planning Interests Act 2014 (RPI Act). At the time the RPI Act was passed, the Mount Morgan mine site was designated as a PLA in the Central Queensland regional plan. The Company believes that the development application will be approved because future mining at Mount Morgan has been recognized in the Rockhampton Regional Planning scheme as a desirable outcome where community benefits are provided and the impacts can be mitigated. Carbine has been advised by Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) that “The Development by the State Application under section 71 of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992” has also been submitted by the DNRM. This requires approval by the Minister of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP). Carbine continues to work on the Environmental Authority Amendment application with the aim of submitting it in the current quarter. An Environmental Authority was previously approved for the Project in 2010.
