Once more we return to the historical snippets of our town and hope you enjoy reading them and sometimes be amazed at some of the events – the first snippet is certainly a complete opposite of today’s work forces and clearly shows how workers valued their jobs and what they did to keep going when the times were very tough.

1930: It was on October 13th when employees of the Mine agreed to extend their working hours from 44 to 48 hours per week and to abolish double time for Sundays.

Those working on contract also voluntarily agreed to throw in for the purchase of shares for all money above the basic wage. This year was the start of the Mine and the new Company of Mount Morgan Limited had been formed with Mr A.A. Boyd as General Manager.

1931: This year terminated the Mount Morgan Town Council and the Calliungal Shire Council with the formation of the Mount Morgan Shire Council and Shire members elected. This Council operated till the recent amalgamation with Rockhampton and other areas.

1932: This year saw the formation of the 9 hole golf course situated behind the Railway Station and the Glen Gordon homes on land that was owned by Mount Morgan Limited. The course had its share of water hazards. In 1957 the new golf course was opened in the Hamilton Creek Area.

This year also saw the abolishment of the seat of Mount Morgan in the State House of Queensland Parliament.

Mr James Stopford was our last representative. Stopford Way (Range Road) was named in his honour.

1933:When the Mine closed in the late 1920’s the Mine Hooter had been relocated to Malaya for some years but on a special request of the then General Manager, Mr Boyd, it was returned to Mount Morgan.

1934: Many activities were started in this year. One was the Girl Guide Movement, others the Welfare Bowls Club and the Y.W.C.A movement. After its closure in 1928 the local sub-branch of the R.S.L was reformed.

1935: A major event this year was that electricity came to our town. The power was being supplied by the Mine to the local Shire Council who then sold it to town consumers. This service continued till 1947 when the Capricornia Regional Electricity Board was formed.

Those are the Snippets for this edition but we will continue with more in future publications.

Local strikes it rich with Gold Lotto entry Mt Morgan News’ “Strike it Rich” slogan became every bit a reality for a local resident last week, when he won a share in division one in the weekend’s Gold Lotto Draw.

The lucky local, who has chosen to remain anonymous, won a first division prize of $509,947.35 with a spur-ofthe-moment Saturday Gold Lotto QuickPick entry.

The Mount Morgan man said he still can’t quite believe his luck.

“I buy all my lotto entries for the week every Sunday, but when I was in the newsagency on Saturday getting a newspaper, I decided to grab another entry for that night,” the winner explained.

“When I went in the next day to get my usual weekly lotto tickets, I picked up a draw results slip and went home to check my numbers.

“If you won $500,000, what would you spend it on?”

Jonathon Stock “I would invest some, donate some, and spend some on travelling.”

“When I discovered the QuickPick entry had won, I just couldn’t believe it. I said to myself, ‘This can’t be right’, so I headed back to the newsagency.

“When I got there the owners had put up a sign saying they’d sold a division one winning entry and that’s when I realised it must be right!”

The team at Mt Morgan News said they were thrilled to learn of the win.

“We have sold a number of division 2 winners and countless division 3 winners and it was so great to follow these on with a division one,” Mt Morgan News owner, Schae Page said.

Sharon Fletcher “I would pay off my debts and split the rest with my two boys.”

“We always hear ‘there’s gold in them there hills’, and for our winner, it was found at the local newsagents through the Golden Casket.”

The local success was one of eight entries in the country that won a first division share in Saturday Gold Lotto’s estimated $4 million division one prize pool, each worth $509,947.35.

Along with the winning entry from Mount Morgan, there were three winning entries sold in Victoria, two were purchased in New South Wales, and one each in Tasmania and Western Australia.

The draw’s winning numbers were 25, 7, 10, 28, 8 and 42 with the supplementary numbers 39 and 35.

Anna Kahler “I would travel the world and put a down payment on a house.”

Local efforts recognised with esteemed award

Local residents, Annie and Keith Hare have officially been recognised for their inspiring efforts in the local community, presented with an esteemed award at a belated Australia Day Awards presentation last month.

The dedicated locals were honoured with the Cultural Award, which was presented in recognition of their untiring efforts to advance the standing of the Mount Morgan community.

Originally scheduled for January, the official awards presentation was delayed due to severe weather. Annie and Keith, who were unable to attend the rescheduled ceremony, were presented with the award at a special presentation held for the local couple last month.

In a presentation by Mayor Margaret Strelow, the pair received a medallion, certificate and citation.

“As long term residents of Struck Oil, Annie and Keith Hare are intertwined in all aspects of their community, and the wider Mount Morgan community has been greatly enhanced by their contributions and support...” the citation announced.

Discussing the recently awarded honour, Annie said it was certainly unexpected.

“We were both very grateful to be nominated,” Annie said.

“It was definitely a surprise to receive the award.”

Honoured by the award, the couple also said that they consider their achievement to be a group effort.

“In anything we have been able to do, there has always been a number of people who have been involved and supported us,” Annie said.

“Anything we have been able to achieve is because of the support that we have and we always consider our achievement to be a group effort.”

The local couple were among ten from around the region to be presented with an award as part of the 2013 awards.

The couple were recognised for their support and involvement with a number of local projects, which among others include works with the John Cani Aged Care Hostel, the Order of the Eastern Star and the annual Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival.

The local pair make up part of the driving force behind the yearly event, which is now in its 11th year.

Art can change the world. Just ask the women from Murri Girls Into Art, a local group who will present their inaugural exhibition of fine silk artwork at the Rockhampton Art Gallery next month.

The Murri Girls came together five years ago as a way of dealing with illness and have found that expressing their stories through art has changed their lives. They meet together every week to create their vibrant artworks whilst telling stories and sharing fun, laughter and learning. They use the ancient Japanese techniques of Shibori and Arashi to create their vibrant silk artworks.

Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth, manipulating and securing it before dyeing.

Some of the techniques employed by the women include using wax, sea salt and urea and then dipping or painting the silk with brightly coloured dyes or wrapping which results in diagonal pleats in the fabric.

The showcase piece in the exhibition will be a fortyeight metre bolt of fabric that will be suspended from the ceiling in the gallery and coiled on the floor to symbolise the storytelling inherent in the Murri Girls’ work.

Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Communities Committee, Cr Rose Swadling said that the exhibition was a tribute to the women’s story of courage and resilience.

“It is also tribute to the healing power of art to connect a community,” she said.

One of the project’s participants is Mt Morgan resident, Beres Austin. Discussing the artworks, Beres said that inspiration for the works came from different sources including the islands, water, sealife, animals and plants.

“Out of coming together, our work just happens. No matter what artist is doing what, a part of our soul is left behind and will always manifest itself in the work,” Beres said.

The exhibition has been funded by Arts Queensland and supported by Creative Capricorn, an initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council.

The exhibition will take place at the Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery from 12 July and entry is free.

This Thursday will see the 2013 Homeless Connect take place – an annual initiative assisting people in the region who are experiencing homelessness.

Along with providing support and essential services, the day will also see the distribution of a number of blankets and warm clothing items - each hand crafted and donated by residents from around the region.

“It’s really nice to have a project like this,” group member, Mary Greany said on the ladies’ recent efforts.

“It’s worthwhile. You have something to work towards and know that it will be of benefit to other people.”

Along with helping others, the group said the recent project also proved an opportunity to meet new people and gain further skills.

Among the woollen items to be distributed as part of this week’s event will be works of the Mount Morgan Lively Knitting and Crochet Club.

“Working on the contributions together as a group, we were able to share our ideas and skills,” club member Jennifer Betheras said.

The local group recently passed on an impressive number of hand stitched items toward the event, including blankets, beanies and scarves.

“We were able to learn new things and this was great.”

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Committees Representative, Councillor Rose Swadling accepted the donation on behalf of the event last Friday, at a presentation and morning tea held at the Mount Morgan Library.

The 2013 Homeless Connect will be held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds this Thursday (June 20).

“I am really blown away by the generosity of this community,” Councillor Swadling said on the morning.

“This is not my first, but my second visit to Mount Morgan to collect donations from the community, and it’s really wonderful to see such great support.”

The contribution was the result of weeks of work carried out by the group’s members, with the items produced from a stockpile of wool that was kindly donated by the local community.

Chair of Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said the competition brings the best out in the region’s collective green-thumb.

“If you enjoy gardening, then have a go at this competition - it doesn’t cost anything to enter and you might just take home a prize.”

“I love this competition as it showcases the talents of our dedicated gardeners and horticulturalists across our Region,” Cr Rutherford said.

Nominations are open from Monday 17 June and close on Friday 16 August. Entry forms can be found online at Council’s website as well as page 15 of this Argus.

People in Profile: Raymond Bendall

By Heather Quarry Mount Morgan has iconic buildings and landscapes filled with history and interest that lives on through the generations. Up there on the ladder of iconic importance are some remarkable people that also live on through the generations. Listening to them telling stories of yesteryear, seeing the achievements made by their children and listening to their grandchildren’s effervescent laughter when in their company shows just how important to a town these people really are.

One of these iconic gentlemen is Raymond Bendall (well known for his cars, cigars and cowboy hats).

Raymond Ronald Bendall was born at the original Mount Morgan Hospital on the 25th of July, 1941. He had two brothers (both in Heaven) and one sister.

There have been three hospitals in the Mount over the years with the newest being opened only a few months ago where he is now spending his time fighting a terminal illness. His popularity among the people shows through the amount of visitors he has on a regular basis.

Although he attended the local Central State School in his younger years Raymond gave a little chuckle when asked about his interests in sport and school subjects and replied “I didn’t like any. I only liked gardening. If they wanted a trench dug you’d go and dig it”.

On his 14th birthday Raymond left school to begin a Baker’s Apprenticeship with Ward’s Bakery in 1 Byrnes Parade, Mount Morgan. “We didn’t do any pastries back then. It was just straight bread.” There were two bakeries in town at that time and he worked at Ward’s Bakery for seven years until it closed down.

After finishing at the bakery Raymond did ten years in the smelter at the mine and 29 years in the coal field.

With an innocent rebellious nature Raymond and his cousin Kevin Pitcher used to enjoy life and made long term memories with their antics. He still showed that rebel spirit when sharing two tales about him and his cousin. “We peed in a little bottle of ‘half and half’ (a half orange half lemon drink that was well known at Harrop’s Soft Drink Factory)” Raymond laughs. “We peed in the bottle then put the lid back on. The bigger fellas came across and wanted first drink, and down the hatch. It was pee.”

Another thing he remembers vividly was attending the football games they were supposed to be playing in. “We used to play football then jump over the bank into the lantana bushes and wait until the game was over. Then we’d come back up over the bank and pretend we played the whole game.”

Despite the fun times Raymond had a strict father. “You had to be home at a certain time or you’d be locked out.”

He remembers various times his dad used the razor strop, leather belt and the old ironing cord that was pulled out of the iron as punishment for different things he’d done over the years.

School life was also similar. Raymond still remembers the feel of the cane. He still recalls the first teacher to give him the cane, for what he explained was for cheeky school boy antics. He still thinks it was better than doing school work.

Raymond has been with his wife Shirley for 40 years.

When asked where they met he laughingly replied “probably at the pub.” They met at the QN Hotel. Shirley was singing “Delta Dawn” and they’ve been together ever since. They were married on the 15th of June, 2002 and between them have four adult children and eleven grand children, with number twelve due very soon. On their wedding day Raymond wore a white shirt and black trousers. He says he didn’t wear a tie because they were going out of fashion back then. Shirley wore a gold coloured long pants suit.

When asked if he was a girl’s man he said “Not really no, I was pretty well a bikey. I had a B.S.A and an Arial Square Four (a big one). I had a Triumph 650cc after that. I rode bikes for around 20 years, might be more.”

In his years as a young dad he loved going fishing with the family. He owned horses and still likes them. His favourite clothing items are black shirts, shorts and thongs “short shorts too, not those long ones down around your knees,” he states strongly. Car wise Raymond is a Ford man and his red GT was his favourite car. He was a cigar smoker for many years and finds it difficult now he has given them up. He never was a cigarette smoker. His favourite food these days seems to be spaghetti. Shirley used to cook liver and bacon which he loves as well.

Raymond then took over cooking it for a long while.

Fish and chips he also enjoys.

People in Profile continued: Over the years, Raymond has always shown how versatile his sense of humour really is - from chasing children with his false teeth in hand, to dressing up as a fine woman.

Dressed in his finest a few years ago at a Miss Netball Contest, Raymond became LuLu for the night wearing his (I mean her) long hair, high heels and long dress. He was a big hit with all that attended.

He didn’t sing on the night but some of his favourite artists are Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride, Slim Dusty, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Raymond is self confessed country through and through and has often been seen on stage at various times singing old favourites like “Ring of Fire”.

Raymond and Shirley always enjoyed family barbecues (Raymond mostly cooked) and trips away together. They are both very proud of how close the family unit is.

Being asked what Raymond would like to see changed for the better, he quietly answers “to get over this cancer but I can’t. It’s bloody terrible.” Even in his personal struggle he still wants others to “try and keep their heads up” when things aren’t going very well.

Discussing his recent time in hospital, Raymond says he likes the food in the Mount Morgan Hospital. “They cook their own food up here and have a bit of variety.” He is made to feel welcome by all staff that comes in contact with him and this is appreciated by Raymond and his family.

Raymond and Shirley agree that Colleen Roberts and Steven Cooper deserve a big thank you for going beyond their call of duty. Colleen for helping to make Raymond comfortable for the photographs to be taken for this article and Steven for helping a special family day go smoothly in the hospital grounds. These are just two of the many caring things that happen at the hospital.

In future issues of People in Profile it is hoped more extracts from Raymond’s interesting life can be revealed to people of the town he loves so much.

Special note: Sadly, Raymond passed away early on the 16th of June after an eventful and very special day (on the 15th) with family and friends; celebrating his and Shirley’s anniversary as well as Shirley’s birthday. He asked for this story to be read out at the party, which was held in the hospital grounds and had a laugh with everyone over its content. Because he loved it so much his family’s wishes were for the article to still go to print.

On Thursday the 13th of June, Mount Morgan State High School students held a Senior Showcase and Tourism Room Reopening. Two groups of Business students organised and held the events in the main administration building of the office.

The Senior Showcase group took the opportunity to put some of our senior students’ assessment on display. The displays ranged from English essays and Mathematics assignments through to pieces of Artwork and Production Dioramas. The work was volunteered by current students and showed their strengths.

The Tourism Room group have been working tirelessly since last year to organise a massive collection of photographs and memorabilia and make this accessible to the public through our tourism room. The students uncovered a mass of history and were intrigued by the many facets of our school’s long and proud history. We are very happy to announce this room being reopened to the public for viewing once more.

Visitors to these two events included Councillor Tony Williams, Councillor Ellen Smith, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, local business owners, Shae and Kerrilyn Page, Melvene Stewart, SES Representative Lyn Porter, Camille Steinberger, Estelle Brown, Wayne McConachy and Youth Worker Sonia Maloney. We also were proud to have a visit from our school patron and past Head Mistress Irene Sturgess.

These events marked a proud moment for our school with the showcase from the old to the new. We would like to thank all of the visitors for their time and welcome members of the public to come and take an historic walk through our tourism room.

After receiving a cake as part of a Random Act of Kindness last month, the children of Mount Morgan Kindy Care decided to carry out their very own kind act.

Last week saw the children present a canvas painting as a gift to the John Cani residence, displaying the handprints of each Kindy Care member.

The canvas was painted during a visit to the John Cani, which also saw the Kindy Care team and John Cani residents work together to create a number of individual artworks.

Each of the morning’s masterpieces was later hung on a wall of the John Cani, bordering the newly presented hand print canvas.

Mount Morgan Central’s Year 4 and 5 students gained a special insight into story writing last month when they were visited by published author Mark Svendsen.

Mark, who is the author of 13 children’s books, shared a range of writing tips with students during two creative writing workshops.

His visits explored in depth writing concepts such as “show, don’t tell”, action and reaction, detailed descriptions and the development of a fictional plot from real life.

Students then wrote their own stories, using their newly acquired writing techniques.

Discussing descriptive writing, Mark said: “When we read a ‘good’ book we become involved in the lives of the characters in the book and the world they live in. If the story is written well we laugh when characters laugh, we cry when they cry, in short we feel what the fictional characters feel. How do authors achieve this response from their readers? Descriptive writing is one way.”

More on Mark Svendsen: Mark has been writing for more than twenty years, and writes young adult novels, novels for younger readers and picture books.

Several of his works have been nominated Honour Books by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

While his works are published in Sydney and Melbourne, Mark lives in Zilzie with his wife, Anne who is a wellknown music teacher and composer.

Mountain Mick’s Curried Savoury Mince & Fried Eggs

Now winter is here, I thought I would add a nice warm curried mince dish to our recipe repertoire. This is a quick and easy dish which one could serve for breakfast, lunch or dinner on a chilly mountain day or night. It works well as a side dish at a winter BBQ or State of Origin night, or out camping. It’s easy to make, it freezes well and is great the next day in jaffles or as a pie filling. I have fond memories of curried mince & fried eggs on toast. Please enjoy.

Ingredients: • 1kg minced beef • 2 onions, finely diced • 2 clove garlic, diced • 3 tbsp curry (I use half Keens ™ & Clive of India ™ ) • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 teaspoon coriander • ½ teaspoon ground pepper • 1 tbsp oil • 750ml beef stock • good pinch of salt to taste • 2 tablespoon corn flour in a little water for thickening.

• 500gm frozen mixed veggies (I use two 500gm bag as I love my veggies) • 2 eggs per serve (soft fried) • Add a 1/2 cup bacon for special treat Method: We start by frying the onions in the oil. Once cooked, remove to a bowl. Now brown the mince beef and once all is browned, add in garlic, curry powders, cumin, coriander, pepper and the thawed veggies. Stir well. Cook for 5 minutes, now add the stock and bring to the boil and then simmer for 30 minutes to develop the flavours. Now taste and add salt - only if it is needed but to add to taste. Add corn flour in a little water to make a paste and thicken the gravy cook for 5 more minutes.

Now serve on toast with a soft fried egg and drizzle with chilli sauce. I serve with a cup of fruity tea lemon or rose-hip.
