Now, gifted local vocalist, Jonathon Stock will take on a world stage.

Jonathon will be heading for Hollywood this July, where he will represent the country at the World Championships of Performing Arts.

Often dubbed the “Olympics for Talent”, Jonathon was one of over 75,000 applicants from 40 countries to audition for a highly sought after spot in the elite world event.

Jonathon will be one of 39 aspiring Aussie performers to head for Hollywood and represent the country in the international Championships this year.

In recent conversation the statement was made that most gold mines were found by one person, sometimes by luck more than seeking. We know that our famous mine was discovered by one, William MacKinlay in 1882, after many had been seeking a reef in the Dee River. So investigation started on how other mines of Queensland were discovered.

Firstly, Gympie. Again one man - James Nash in 1867 discovered Gympie gold which became the third largest Queensland gold mine after Charters Towers and of course, Mount Morgan. Like Ironstone Mountain, our town’s first name, Gympie was known as Nashville prior to being re-named Gympie. Gympie’s yearly festival is called “Gympie Gold Rush Festival”, held in October each year for 10 days of cultural events. Unfortunately with rapid development, Gympie resulted in streets laid out in irregular fashion- not the grid pattern common to most Queensland towns. Today Gympie has future gold mining resources, agriculture, timber and tourism that play important roles.

By chance, the gold discovery of Charters Towers was by an Indigenous boy, Jupiter Mossman, who found a gold rock in the river bed. From this start, a total of 10 reefs were eventually mined. Charters Towers was enjoying such boom times in 1872/1899; it had its own Stock Exchange and a population of 30,000 made it Queensland’s second city. Charters Towers was affectionately known as “The World” because anything one desired was obtainable in that city. Their annual event held on Australia Day weekend is “The Charters Towers Goldfields Ashes” when approximately 200 teams of cricketers visit. It is reported that today Charters Towers has more gold underground than what was mined in the rush of the 1800’s. It also has a beef industry, and education with many secondary schools and is very important and caters for many families from Western Queensland.

While in 1882 two pastoralist brothers, William and Frank Hann reported finding traces of gold in the Palmer River, it was James Mulligan- an experienced prospector who confirmed plenty of alluvial gold and so the rush began. With posters depicting Palmer River as a place of waterfalls, butterflies and luxuriant vegetation, thousands from Europe and China flocked to the area.

Sadly, anti-Chinese sentiment grew, and a conflict known as the “Tong Wars” resulted. Unlike the poster adds, the Palmer River can be a harsh place, and many people died of tropical diseases. Although the surface gold has been prospected, handfuls of deeper projects remain.

Other priceless items from Palmer River area are the pencil drawings of an Indigenous boy, named Oscar. In March 1899, a cattle station owner, Henry Glissan noticed one of his young boys had a liking for drawing (chalk on stone), and gave him a book and coloured pencils. From this, Oscar’s talent, his pencil drawings (forty of them, depicting life as it was in those days) are displayed in the National Museum of Australia.

CHICAGO - It has razzle dazzled audiences around the world, and soon this smash hit musical will hit the local stage.

This month, The Pilbeam Theatre, Rockhampton will host the highly anticipated local production of CHICAGO; kicking off the first of six shows this Friday evening.

Set in the prohibition era of the late 1920s, CHICAGO follows the gritty and glitzy tale of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly; two women who find themselves on trial for the murders of their respective lovers.

Sent to the Cook County Jail to bide their time, the duo fall under the sway of the scheming Matron “Mama” Morton.

With the help of a persuasive lawyer, Billy Flynn, the pair fuel their desires for fortune, fame and freedom and stop at nothing in an entertaining battle to attain each.

Among the local talent getting set to take the stage this week is Mount Morgan resident, Anna Kahler, who has sealed the role of Matron “Mama” Morton.

Definitely no stranger to stage productions, the local talent and Drama and English teacher for Mount Morgan High, has dedicated much of her time assisting school productions, along with performing in a variety of regional musicals.

“I love music and performing and am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be involved in such a professional performance with a great production team and seriously talented performers.”

CHICAGO is set to treat its audience to knockout performances, along with an impressive line-up of show stopping hits.

The production will see Anna perform the duet “Class” with Amanda Locker (playing Velma Kelly), along with one of the production’s favourite solos “When you’re good to Mama”.

CHICAGO is being performed in Rockhampton at the Pilbeam Theatre on Friday, March 15, Saturday March 16, Sunday March 17, Friday March 22 and Saturday, March 23. Anna’s most recent performances include a role in Rockhampton’s “Guys and Dolls” in 2011 along with a role in Rockhampton’s hit stage play “Hairspray” in 2012, playing a member of the Dynamites.

Discussing her latest role, Anna said she is looking forward to the upcoming production and passing on her newly acquired skills to her local students.

“I got back into doing theatre as I wanted to learn the skills that I could then pass onto the students at Mount Morgan High and further assist with this year’s school production,” Anna said.

Young talent gets set for world stage performance

It almost seems an understatement to say that 2013 is set to be a big year for local resident, and vocalist Jonathon Stock.

Jonathon was invited to send in an application for a spot in the team after applying with a performance clip on Youtube.

The upcoming months are set to see the young talent celebrate his 18th birthday; record a number of original songs for an EP (selection of self-performed songs); and receive word on his audition for a spot in this year’s nationwide hit television program and talent search, X Factor.

He will bring some impressive experience with him to the competition, taking up singing and singing lessons during his primary school years, along with songwriting and numerous performances during his years at high school.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there…

This July will see Jonathon head for Hollywood, USA, where he will represent Australia at the 2013 World Championships of Performing Arts.

The competition, which celebrates its 17th year in July, is universally cited as the one-and-only official global event for performers and entertainers, both amateur and professional.

The event will welcome participants from over 40 countries to the Olympic-style talent competition, and is set to include rounds of heats for a variety of performing art categories, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to top challengers in the final rounds.

Jonathon will be competing in the singing events, which will see him perform four different songs (one for each of the four vocal categories), each restricted to 60 seconds per song.

Although he admits he will be up against some tough competition, Jonathon says he is looking forward to the entire experience.

National Director Lizette Hunt, said she has strong faith in Jonathon’s abilities.

“We only take the crème of the crop to LA,” Lizette said.

“I believe that Jonathon will definitely stand out and do fantastic in Hollywood.”

Jonathon will be leaving for Hollywood on the 6th of July and will return on the 21st of that month.

In the meantime, Jonathon is seeking sponsorship to assist in covering the costs for the trip; with an estimated $6,500 required.

Jonathon and his family have arranged a number of official sponsorship requests for around the region and are also planning to host fundraising events in the community in the coming months. (See future issues of the Argus for event and project details.)

“I am really excited to be involved in this competition and to be representing my country,” he said.

“The big dream for the future is to be a recording artist, so I am really looking forward to learning more about the music industry and seeing some really great performers.”

Showcasing the variety of talent around the globe, the competition is also recognised for its potential in steading future performing careers; providing national exposure and experience.

Jonathon is one of 39 Aussies to head to Hollywood for the contest.

Cent Sale success for Mt Morgan Railway Museum

Local residents, Amber Buckles, Rose Munez and Abbey Buckles (pictured) were among the many community members to enjoy an afternoon of great company and great prizes last Saturday; attending a cent sale hosted by the volunteers Mount Morgan Railway Museum.

The funds raised from the event will help fund various future projects for the Mount Morgan Railway Museum.

Around 70 people headed to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall for the event, eager to try their luck with the scores of prizes up for grabs.

Attendees were treated to a free afternoon tea before the cent sale’s official commencement, which also included lucky door and multidraw raffles.

Proving a win for all, the afternoon saw many take home one or more prizes, as well as an impressive $1,350 raised through the event.

President of Mount Morgan Railway Inc Carol Stock said she was very impressed with the event’s turn out.

“I would like to thank all for their support. It was a great afternoon.” Carol said.

Over $500 has been donated to the Mount Morgan SES and Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade, thanks to a local fundraiser and the generosity of the local community.

The sum was raised through a Thank You Barbeque held in Mount Morgan’s CBD last Saturday morning.

The event was held as an opportunity for the local community to thank all local emergency service crews for their valued and continuous efforts, as well as a way to see funds raised for the local SES and Rural Fire Brigade.

Although the weather appeared bleak for the majority of the morning, it wasn’t enough to deter a large number of local residents supporting the event; purchasing food and drinks, making donations, and trying their luck in the two raffles donated for the occasion. A number of residents also took the opportunity to have a chat to the members of the emergency service crews who were in attendance on the day.

A total of $550.55 was raised during the morning, with all funds donated to the Mount Morgan SES and Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade at the event’s end.

The event was sponsored by Mount Morgan IGA, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development, Mt Morgan News, TMC Tours, The Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop and members of the community.

Last Sunday marked Mount Morgan’s 2013 Clean up Australia Day event, and for a number of local residents, this meant hands up and gloves on.

Around 25 locals gathered in Morgan Street early on Sunday morning to volunteer for the local clean up; marking a record number of helping hands for the event in recent years.

Participants donned safety gloves and took to the local streets with rubbish bags; eager to help make the Mount that little bit tidier.

Mount Morgan Central’s Year 7s made up a large percentage of the crowd on the morning, with each student pitching in and making an impressive mark in Morgan Street.

Other areas of the town tidied as part of the event included residential streets, Mount Morgan’s lookouts, Boyd Park and the Number 7 Dam. Together the group saw a total of 11 Clean up Australia Day rubbish bags filled by the morning’s end.

The local group made up part of the 55,000+ people to give their time in recognition of the national event, with their efforts contributing to the staggering 16,000+ tonnes of rubbish collected around the country this year.

The Mount Morgan Safe and Confident Living Social Group decided they would like to have a day in town, just reacquainting themselves with a couple of the attractions the town has to offer.

They had hoped to do a mine tour, but unfortunately the recent weather took that opportunity from them, but they will be doing it as soon as they can.

The morning was spent visiting the local museum.

It was noted that there had been many changes and improvements since their last visit, so it is good to be able to tell others what they saw.

We then had a lovely cuppa at the bakery and finished the day having the best lunch at the Leichhardt Hotel.

People in Profile: Mick Geiszler

By Heather Quarry Michael Ernest Geiszler (known to most people as Mick) was born 4th February 1953 at Monto Queensland. He moved from Monto to Rockhampton where his dad worked at the meat works and his mum was a house wife who looked after the children (one girl and five boys).

Despite a few hard knocks in his life and losing a parent when still young, Mick feels the experiences have helped make him the person he is today. Mick’s mum was an epileptic who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1961. He remembers himself, his sister and younger brother were taken to a neighbour’s place. “We were told our mum was gone on a holiday on 7th of October 1961” he says as he remembers this time. He found out a few days later when everyone was dressed up that she had actually passed away. After that Mick spent two years in Maryborough with an auntie before getting a ride back to Rockhampton in a removalist company’s truck.

Over time Mick’s dad met a lady that had ten children.

With sixteen children between them there was quite a lot of family friction amongst them. Some are still like brothers to Mick though and they stay in touch. Mick attended North Rockhampton State School (which is now a Christian school) and Park State in Tinana. He finished his school years in grade seven with his favourite subjects being Social Studies, Maths and English. He loved cricket and played some league cricket as well. Mick is still an avid cricket lover and watches it every chance he gets. He enjoys salt water fishing (both pro fishing and recreational). When asked if he wanted to continue school, Mick replied quietly “My English Teacher, Mr Hickman wanted me to go onto high school but dad said no. My place was working on the dairy farm dad had shares in, not going to school.”

Working in a dairy at a young age was hard yakka in earlier years and Mick remembers being up at daylight, jumping on a painted horse to get the cows in. He never owned shoes to work in so shovelling floors, washing up the dairy and the dairy utensils using an old 44 gallon drum with wood under it was never easy.

It was during Mick’s mid-teen years when he decided to leave home – he recalls his Dad wasn’t very happy at the time. “I remember waiting behind a huge burned out stump until I got a ride with Les Pickering who drove the cream truck. He took me to Biloela and bought me a vanilla milk shake and two big hamburgers. I’ll never forget that,” he laughs.

“The worst living arrangements I ever had during that time was living on my own for awhile under the Fitzroy Bridge. It was very scary and every move I thought was a burglar. I ran into a lady called Mrs Bailey who had eight people living at her place but she took me in” Mick states with a thankful sigh. Mr Hogborn, the Personnel Officer at the Meat Works when Mick was fifteen years old, gave Mick a chance to prove himself despite not being the legal age of sixteen - the age you were supposed to be to start work there. Getting a ride to work was easy but Mick had to walk home after most of his shifts. His pay was 27 dollars a week so he thought it was worth it.

When asked about different places he had lived, Mick stated strongly that the best move he ever made was moving to Mount Morgan. He says buying a house and raising a family in the Mount was the best thing he could have ever done. He believes Mount Morgan is a great place to bring up a family.

Mick has a passion for working on cars. He helped his dad put a head on his truck at the age of nine and pulled his first motor apart when he was eighteen. He passed for his driver’s license when he was seventeen and is self taught with motor mechanic skills. Even though he is not a ticketed motor mechanic, Mick has been working on cars for approximately forty years.

Mick’s wife, Dianne Lesley Geiszler was born 2nd of December, 1958 at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and had one brother as well as four sisters. Dianne attended a state school in Darling Point, Brisbane then went to a special school. Her favourite subject was always Maths.

Competition Marching, Jazz, Ballet and swimming at the pool were a few of Dianne’s favourite sports. She stayed at school until grade eight then went out to work at a meat works factory in Brisbane when she was fifteen years old. Mick and Dianne have six children, two girls and four boys.

In a future issue of People in Profile, we hope to bring you more of Dianne’s life and continue on with a little more about Mick.

The countdown is on for the 2013 Golden Mount Festival, with just seven weeks until the big event!!

Here are a couple of information items to help you get ready for the Festival!

Key dates: The 2013 Golden Mount Festival will be held on: Friday the 3rd, Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of May. 2013 Golden Mount Festival Theme: The theme of the 2013 Golden Mount Festival is “One town, many cultures”. With under a couple of months until the big parade, be sure to start planning your floats!

We would like to encourage the use of recycled material used to decorate your floats – with a special prize expected for the most creative use of these items.

Early programme details: Friday evening: The usual family fun day (routinely scheduled on the Monday) will now be incorporated in an event set to be held on the Friday evening. This will be the official opening of the Golden Mount Festival and will kick off at 5pm.

Currently we are hoping to incorporate fireworks, floating lanterns, kids’ rides, food and some fantastic entertainment to the evening’s programme – an exciting way to officially open the annual festivities!

Friday evening decorations - we need your creativity!: As part of this special Friday evening event, we would like to offer all members of the community the chance to have your very own, personalised decorations on display.

We plan to see the Big Dam decorated with numerous lanterns and would like to welcome community members, businesses, organisations and local groups to make a lantern to be included. Decorate a pre-made lantern or make one from scratch, and find a way to represent you or your group personally through your designs.

See upcoming issues of the Argus for tips and tricks on making your own lanterns.

Over the Christmas break, the Dee Bowls Club had improvements made to the green, which will make both play and maintenance a lot better.

With a successful application to the gaming commission, the Club was able to have concrete ditch boards installed.

Many of the timber ditch boards were from the original installation in the 1950’s and were no longer doing the job they were designed to perform. Those members of the club who had laboured to replace portions of the surrounds, were particularly pleased that funding was made available for repairs. It has been such a labour intensive task to repair them. Your garden’s wet weather woes: The wet weather brings with it a myriad of problems for the home gardener. These problems can include compacted soil, nutrient loss and soil erosion. Bacterial and fungal problems are major issues. The following is a brief breakdown of the cause of these problems and some solutions.

Soil compaction:

The continual pounding of the raindrops onto the soil causes soil compaction. Areas with soil compaction are normally barren and the surface is smooth. The addition of a good quality organic mulch to the soil will solve this problem.

Nutrient loss:

Nutrient leaching is caused from the water running through the soil. There is nothing immediate to see, but a couple of weeks after the rain ceases, the plants will start to look yellow and unhealthy. The best way to fix nutrient leaching is to add compost and a fertiliser to the soil once the rain has finished and before your plants start to suffer too much.

Soil erosion:

Soil erosion in your garden is caused by runoff removing the previous topsoil. The deep furrows through the garden make it obvious to even the amateur gardener that this has taken place. To repair the erosion you need to fill the craters with well-mulched soil. For larger areas, the installation of sub soil drainage will lessen the chances of this happening again, however this can be an expensive exercise both in time and money.

Fungal and bacterial problems: Fungal and bacterial problems are caused by a buildup of moisture on the leaves of the plant, which when combined with a lack of air movement, provides an ideal incubator for fungal and/or bacterial spores to grow. There are both natural and chemical treatments for these problems and if unsure please ask an expert to diagnose your problem and suggest a solution.

It’s great to see the Big Dam full and our beloved Mount Morgan looking green.

More restocking of the Dam again and things are looking good all-around in terms of infrastructure. This is truly a lovely fishing spot, albeit under used by some of our young residents.

Lots of water means more feed coming down for the fish.

Harder to catch you think? No my young friends, you just have to think a little more and apply your smart minds to the problem at hand.

A little on catching Silver Perch:

Silvers, as I call them, cruise around in a pack or shoal approximately 10 to 15 metres from the bank. They move in packs their own size ie- 15cm long or up to 30cm long, but never a mixed bag. If you hook one, keep moving clockwise ahead of your last strike.

Great bait:

The new soft plastic red worms that come in a sealed see-through container (matchbox size) are excellent bait.

From memory, they are soaked in krill oil. Try them on a bubble float, approximately 1 metre drop. Last month most fishing tackle shops were giving them away as a promotion gig – check them out.

A little on catching Eel Tail:

Eel Tail Catties are in abundance kids – get your mum or dad to take you down with a lantern after dark – the light attracts them. You only have to cast out 3 metres using the common garden snail as bait, in fact if you can grab some from around the garden, freeze them and then crush them to burly the spot you are fishing. The Eel Tail is one of the top fresh water eating in Queensland.

In conclusion:

I would say that the old saying of “prevention is better than cure” is true in gardening. A free draining well mulched soil combined with a regular organic fertilising regime will keep your plants healthy. Planting in raised garden beds stops water sitting around the base of the plant. Regular pruning of the plant keeps it open and allows air movement around the branches and leaves.

Good gardening practices will keep your plant healthy and free from problems, however there are always exceptions.

Pork Hocks in beer

with creamy rough mash & sweet carrots with gravy I normally would cook this in the hark smoker for about 7 hours at135C or in the oven, covered with foil for most of the cooking time - but I was in a rush today, plus I also have a new play toy (a new pressure cooker) and I had to have dinner out in under an hour and it had to be Pork Hocks. Done, I love my German Mother-in-law for my new toy. My wife Karin loves pork hocks- it must be her German heritage.

This recipe is for the pressure cooker, plus I’ve added the method for oven cooking as well.

It was too much, we could not eat it all - only got half way. The meat and skin was so soft and gelatinous, the meat was just falling off the bone - you could eat it with a spoon... and the mash was light and creamy and the carrots- so sweet and juicy. This is how Pork Hocks should be! Yummo!

Ingredients:

• 2 fresh pork hocks aka knuckles • 2 large apples (peeled & cored) roughly chopped • 2 large brown onions roughly chopped • 2 Tblsp Sumac (a Middle Eastern spice) - (I got mine at IGA) • 2 Tblsp sweet paprika • 1 Tblsp ground coriander • 1 Tblsp ground cumin • 2 garlic cloves • 1 tsp liquid Smoke (apple wood) • 1 tsp salt • ½ tsp black pepper • ¼ cup raw sugar • ½ cup apple cider vinegar • 300ml beer • 500ml chicken Stock • 6 large chat potatoes cut in half • 4 sticks celery roughly chopped • 3 large carrots roughly chopped

Method:

Pressure Cooker: First brown the hocks in a little oil and then cook the onions a little. Then put in all the pork hocks, onions, apple, apple cider vinegar. Add chicken stock plus all of spices (paprika, cumin, Sumac, coriander, garlic etc), a little liquid Smoke (apple wood) and beer in pressure cooker for 25 minutes. After pressure is reached, de-pressurise. Add celery, carrots and potatoes, reseal and cook for 12 more minutes. After pressure is reached, de-pressurise and remove the carrots and potato. Next, thicken the sauce, roughly mash the spuds with a little butter, sour cream and milk (not to much). Add a little salt & pepper to taste and parsley flakes and wow man these bad boy are to die for!

Oven: As above: First, brown the hocks in a little oil and then cook the onions. Put in all pork hocks, onions, apple, apple cider vinegar. Add chicken stock, all spices, a little liquid Smoke (apple wood) and beer in deep baking pan (roaster). Cook for about 3 ½ hours at 150C, covered with foil. Next, add the celery, carrots and potatoes and cook for 1 hour more. Next, remove the carrots and potato and thicken the sauce. Roughly mash the spuds with a little butter, sour cream & milk and add little salt & pepper to taste and parsley flakes. Serve on the mash with the carrots beside with the gravy poured over the hock. Followed by a nice glass of port.
