How wonderful is the Anonymous Friends venture that Mark Ricks instigated. What would be a tourist’s reaction to receiving an Act of Kindness? This would certainly result in positive action for our town. Taking the Act of Kindness a little further would be to include the youth of our town. These kind acts require no money but would be worth a great deal to the recipient. Taking out an elderly’s wheelie bin, or perhaps rake up a few leaves.

These small tasks to a young person would be wonderful acts of kindness to an elderly person. Both would benefit enormously while the youth would be richer by character building. Give it a go young people and receive untold pleasure and gratitude.

Read an interesting article in the Royal Queensland’s Historical Journal which you may enjoy as it connects with Mount Morgan.

It is the life of Inspector William Henry Lipp, born 11/2/1881 to German parents who had migrated. The family lived on a property near Toowoomba and William went to school at the Emu Creek State School until 14 years of age when he returned to working on farms. In 1901 he attempted to join the Police Force and required these qualifications: good horsemanship, single, under 30 years, min. chest- 36inches, height- 5ft 8 inches, strong constitution and to be free from bodily complaints. It was not till 1902 that he received an appointment to Roma Street Force as a Constable.

In 1906 he was promoted to Detective Constable of the C.I.B. Branch and was transferred to Mount Morgan in December of that year. Mount Morgan’s population at that time was 8,000 and was staffed with 8 police officers and came under Rockhampton’s jurisdiction. Lipp’s salary at that time was 126 pounds - about $252 per annum.

While in Mount Morgan he married local girl, Emily Donald of Baree and they had three children, Kevin 1913, William 1914 and Lexie 1919. Lipp received high recognition for his outstanding work in the area but thought he had been overlooked but in 1918 he was promoted to Detective Acting Sergeant. 1919 saw the many promotions he was to receive to Sub-Inspector Lipp of the Criminal Investigation Branch in Brisbane.

His career flourished with appointments to Townsville, Toowoomba, Cairns and Roma Street Brisbane. He obtained the position of Inspector First Class and with excellent recommendations looked like being the next Police Commissioner in 1934 but that did not happen.

Lipp retired on his 60th Birthday after 38 years, 7 months service and returned to the land near Toowoomba. What a magnificent career from very humble beginnings and basic formal education. Mount Morgan was so lucky to have this exceptional man’s experience from 1906 to 1919.

Work progresses on Mt Morgan Range Despite recent rain hindering some progress, the Department of Main Roads have announced that works to repair the Burnett Highway (Mount Morgan Range) remain on track.

The reconstruction works follow the extensive damage caused during the January flood event which saw 35 landslips along the highway.

The Department has been working toward seeing the route reopened to traffic, with early works including the removal of debris and the completion of a full geotechnical assessment.

Reconstruction works to the site are now underway.

“While some of the slips which occurred above the highway have now been cleared, access remains difficult and dangerous,” Transport and Main Roads Regional Director, Terry Hill said on the site’s current progression.

“A stability risk assessment has been completed at the Mount Morgan Range slip locations and one of the major landslide locations has been repaired.”

“RoadTek has five crews working at locations along the length of the range to ensure the repairs are completed as quickly as possible.

“In some locations where sections of the highway have given way, construction workers have to work from below the slip and reconstruct from the bottom up.”

Despite the challenges, Mr Hill said that work is expected to see completion in the upcoming weeks.

“Initially, it was expected the rebuilding task would take at least six months,” Mr Hill said.

“We remain on track to have the Range reopened to traffic by early August 2013, weather permitting.”

Mt Morgan Light Horse Troop honour memory of much loved local

When members of the 5th Light Horse Regiment Troop were seeking a name for their newly constructed storage and display area, there was just one that would suffice: Gloria Crosbie.

The local group recently dedicated the new building to the memory of their much loved trooper, Gloria, who sadly passed away in November of last year.

For the local members, the recent dedication honours Gloria’s inspiring commitment to the troop.

“Gloria was a member of the troop for twelve years,” the Mt Morgan Light Horse Troop members said.

“Her years of dedication were an inspiration to all of us.”

Gloria’s involvement with the Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop began when the troop formed in the year 2000. The first meeting saw the dedicated local elected as the group’s Treasurer – a position she proudly held until her passing.

During the twelve years with the troop, Gloria made an impressive impact; not only working tirelessly to help build a strong financial base by holding countless raffles, but also taking part in a range of the troop’s activities.

Despite being in her 70s, Gloria actively participated in numerous ceremonial parades and was a familiar face at the local annual ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services, as a member of the Catafalque Guard.

And her involvement didn’t stop there. Gloria also offered her talents in needlework whenever the need arose; making the entire troop ceremonial Shabraques (saddle blankets), Unit Felt Colour Patches and also sewing on countless rank insignias to members’ uniforms.

The troop’s new 6 X 6 metre shed, was completed by the Rockhampton Regional Council earlier this year and was given its official name by the Mt Morgan Light Horse Troop in March.

Students sign up for success

Attending a school with such a rich history, Mount Morgan High students are encouraged to embrace an impressive past. Along with this, encouragement is also provided to look ahead to a bright future.

Last Thursday saw a number of students do just this, when they declared their dedication to pursue future education and work opportunities at the school’s annual Charter Signing Ceremony.

The 2013 year 11 students made pledges before staff, students and members of the community as part of the event; acknowledging a commitment to stay focused on education until the end of their schooling years and to engage in further education, training or employment following graduation.

“We know that plans change as we change,” Year 11 student, Sullivan Bramble said as part of the morning’s official proceedings.

“But we commit today to continue pursuing our goals for futures which productively engage us in being active and contributing members of our local, national and global community.”

The students marked their commitments by reading pledges and signing the 2013 Charter.

The Year 11 students of Mount Morgan High further cemented their pledges on the morning, by leaving a handprint and signature on the school’s Charter Wall. Pictured are year 11 students, Miranda Woods and Amelia Hansen (front).

School staff, leaders, family and community members were also invited to sign the Charter Wall as part of the event– acknowledging their own personal commitment to assist the students in achieving their goals.

Discussing the event, Head of Department and Acting Principal of Mount Morgan High, Miss Kylie Stanger said: “This year’s event marked the 11th year that students of Mount Morgan High have made the commitment to engage in further learning or employment after their graduation – which for this year’s students will be at the end of 2014,” Miss Stanger said.

“It’s an individual and personal decision that the students make.”

For 2013 Year 11 students, Whitney Tull and Mary Cowl, participation in last Thursday’s event was an opportunity to finalise their own personal commitments.

“I signed the Charter as a way of making a commitment to myself and others that I will make a good effort to do something when I leave school and try and be successful in what I do,” Whitney said.

“For me, signing the charter is good motivation,” Mary said.

“I’d like to be successful when I leave school and signing the Charter today will help me to stick to that goal.”

7 Under a bright blue sky, Mount Morgan Central State School held a National Sorry Day ceremony on Friday the 24th of May, to remember The Stolen Generation.

It began with acknowledgement of country by Janaya Bray, Carla-Delle Wilkes-Hayden and Keanna Martin.

Principal, Mr Blair Harp spoke of the history of the Stolen Generation and how it is a significant and important aspect of Australia’s history. He added “When we meet to commemorate National Sorry Day, we do so by showing respect and remembrance in a similar way as when we gather on other days of historical significance.”

During 2012 ‘The Stolen Generation’ was studied by several classes.

Year 7 student Zane Smith (pictured right) presented a powerful oral presentation of what he believed it to be all about and shared this during the morning’s ceremony.

“I believe that as students of Mt Morgan, we must be the generation to initiate the change for future generations.”

He finished by stating “Let’s stand up together in reconciliation on the 26th of May each year, in our community.”

Following on from the success of their two weeks of workshops last year, the team from Flipside Circus will return to Mount Morgan – this time for a whole month.

“Our trainers were so impressed with the talent in Mt Morgan that we couldn’t resist coming back,” said Flipside Circus CEO, Debbie Wilks. “We are committed to developing circus in regional Queensland and we can’t wait to return to Mt Morgan.”

Two circus trainers will work with students from Mt Morgan State School and will find a group of 25 young people committed to making a circus performance to be shown in the community and at the Village Festival in Yeppoon in August. Flipside Circus will be in Mt Morgan from July 29.

“The Village Festival happens every year in Yeppoon and we love to showcase performers from around our region,” said Leanne Smith, President of Keppel Coast Arts. “We will be developing some circus performers on the coast as well and look forward to seeing what comes out of an exchange between Yeppoon and Mt Morgan.”

In the Indigenous Garden Area, each class placed wreaths in the letters of ‘S O R R Y T O D A Y’. This was followed by the placement of a piece of bark with their classroom message which was stated clearly by each group.

The ceremony was closed by the National Anthem.

This was the first of this type of ceremony and National Sorry Day and the Stolen Generation will be commemorated each year from now on.

Saint Mary’s event welcomes special guest

For the Parish of Saint Mary’s, each year sees a variety of fundraising efforts carried out in support of local, regional and even international activities and charities.

The day also saw the Saint Mary’s Parish make a donation to the Mother Felicity. Pictured are Lay Minister Keith Hare and Mother Felicity.

Last month saw a number of local residents take the opportunity to hear firsthand about one of the Parish’s international sponsorships; support and mission works in Papua New Guinea.

Local residents attended a special lunch held at the Saint Mary’s Church Hall on May 23, which welcomed special guest, Mother Felicity Ihove.

Mother Felicity, who resides in Popondetta, Papua New Guinea, spoke to the audience about life in Papua New Guinea and the current ministerial works in the area, supported by churches in Rockhampton and Mount Morgan.

Assistance includes financial support to the Popondetta church, as well as donations to support teams and projects in the area.

Mother Felicity’s visit to Mount Morgan was part of a two week stay in Australia, with husband and Popondetta Anglican Church Bishop, Lindsley Ihove.

Over $200 has been donated to Breast Cancer Network Australia, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Mount Morgan Women’s Aboriginal Health (MMWAH).

The funds were raised through a pink ladies event which was held at the Green Shed last month.

Last month’s Pink Ladies Event included presentations from representatives of Family Planning Queensland and BreastScreen. Pictured are the morning’s presenters and a number of attendees: Roxanne Hodda, Sharon Coome, Rebecca Stewart, Janet Clarke, Daisy Gibson, Rosemary Hoffman, Trish Harte, Deanna Anderson, Rita Anderson, Isaiah Anderson.

The event was part of MMWAH’s monthly meet, which encompasses discussion on various health topics, social catch ups and activities.

A total $245 was raised through raffles and the sale of Breast Cancer Network Australia Merchandise. The funds will now be donated in aim of assisting those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.

More on MMWAH: MMWAH meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Green Shed, from 10:00 am until 2:30 pm.

Each meet includes discussion on various health topics and women’s issues; with regular and special guest speakers keen to share their expertise and knowledge.

Discussions are followed by activities and craft, with morning tea/lunch provided.

Interested locals are invited to come along, bring a friend or two, and enjoy a fantastic morning.

The Rockhampton Regional Council has thanked the Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group volunteers for an impressive donation to the 2013 Homeless Connect.

Last week saw the local ladies pass on an array of colourful and wonderfully knitted and crocheted items to be distributed as part of this year’s event.

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Communities Committee Chair Councillor Rose Swadling said donating their time to knit and crochet was a wonderful contribution which will have enormous benefits.

“What the Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group have done again this year is wonderful. Not only did they make beanies, scarfs and blankets for those in need, but most importantly they displayed true community spirit and a great team effort,” Cr Swadling said.

“It’s important to share our skills and time to help others, considering anyone today could unfortunately find themselves homeless due to the rising prices of food, housing and daily living expenses.”

Homeless Connect, held on the 20 June 2013, provides an opportunity for those who do not have safe, secure and affordable housing to attend a day where different services and agencies are on hand to provide basic essentials and help.

Mount Morgan Arts and Craft Group Coordinator Carol Stock said the group loved getting together to knit for a good cause.

“We’ve had dedicated and quite skilful ladies clicking their knitting needles each Thursday, literally getting together for a yarn, and feeling really good to be able help those in difficult circumstances,” Carol said.

New report card for local rivers Central Queenslanders will now have the opportunity to track the health of local rivers and marine waters, following an exciting new partnership and recently established reporting system.

The report card offers a comprehensive snapshot of aquatic ecosystem health of the Fitzroy Basin to help the community and river managers make more informed decisions.

The Fitzroy Partnership for River Health released the first Report Card that rates the ecological health of Fitzroy Basin waterways last week; announcing the condition of the area’s rivers and creeks from July 2010 to June 2011.

A total of 104,480 samples were used in the assessment to determine this overall catchment grade.

The report awarded the Callide catchment, which includes Mount Morgan and surrounds, a C Grade and revealed that overall, rivers and creeks (2010 - 2011) were in fair to good condition.

Fitzroy Partnership for River Health Executive Officer, Nathan Johnston said an independent science panel, chaired by Professor Barry Hart, guided the report card’s development and scrutinised results to ensure that methods used for assessment were relevant to local rivers, the estuary and marine environment and based on the best available science.

“The Report Card rates aquatic ecosystem health solely and no other uses,” Mr Johnston said.

“To help paint a more complete picture, the report card also includes additional information on both natural climatic drivers such as flooding, and human influences relevant to the Fitzroy Basin,” he said.

It’s expected that the report cards will be issued on an annual basis; with 2011/2012 provided May 2014.

Further details: The Callide catchment is located in the southeast of the Fitzroy Basin and includes the Dee River, Don River and Callide Creek. Waterways in the Callide Catchment eventually drain to the Dawson River, just downstream of Baralaba, then onto the Fitzroy River and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Zone.

Mount Morgan is situated at the headwaters of the Dee River, with part of the waterway known to be impacted from the historic gold mine.

Caring for your Garden during Winter It’s that lovely time of the year again when the hose shoots more ice than water and your feet get so cold they feel like they are burning if you dare step outside on that lovely looking white lawn you have. Yes it is winter.

Those lovely cold months when your garden curls up and hides from the frost and looks forward to seeing you at 3am in the morning hosing your lawn down.

Just because it’s winter does not mean your gardening time has to stop completely. There are still some plants that you can plant to brighten up your gardens.

One plant I have come across that has really caught my eye growing around town is a Lechenaultia. Now I know everyone is scratching their heads saying, “Come on Murray, common names, speak English!”

Let me explain...

A Lechenaultia is a small drought hardy plant that is native to the dryer parts of Western Australia. Even though this plant is not native to this area it has been placed in perfect conditions and thriving. It may be a little hard to get established but it is well and truly worth it. You will more than likely not find this plant in your large chain store hardwares so try those little boutique style garden shops. You never know what you may find.

• The common old Euphorbia Snowflake really comes into its own in winter. All that green foliage makes way for millions of small white flowers. This one is a good plant for those areas that don’t see a lot of frost.

• Do you need instant colour? How about Cordylines?

Narrow leaf Cordylines are good for frosty areas and the wider leaf ones are good for areas with minimal frost.

• Poincettias are another dazzling show of colour with their reds, whites and pinks. Also good for areas with not a lot of frost.

So far I have listed plants that are good for those lucky residents who don’t experience a lot of frost in winter.

Now if you are anything like me and live in an area like Struck Oil, we have what we would describe as an alluvial snowfield. If your garden resembles this then there are plants you can even plant.

I know they may seem boring but the good old classics are Pansy, Calendula, Snapdragons, Eremophilas (Emu Bush) and Daffodils, to name a few.

Now if you don’t want to advance your garden but you want to protect your existing plants then I can help you there too.

• Cover your plants with hessian or shade cloth. Make sure you do this late in the afternoon so the plants can get all the sunlight they need during the day.

• Hose the frost off your plants early in the morning. This needs to be done well and truly before sunrise. This will not cure frost nor will it prevent it 100%. All this does is lessen the effects.

• Nice and easy way is to lessen the nitrogen in your soil and increase potassium and phosphorus.

• Try to keep the atmosphere moving. (Difficult not impossible). Large amounts of smoke will disrupt the atmosphere enough. Frost only sets when the atmosphere is still.

• Try to not water your plants. If you have to, do it between daylight and 10am. This gives the plant time to dry out and to cope with the oncoming frost.

If your plant does get frosted DO NOT prune the dead bits off. The dead leaves are protecting the new undergrowth.

If you take away their shelter they will be frosted.

I hope this will be of some assistance to you and keep an eye out for that abominable snow man.

Mountain Mick’s Freaky Friday Sausage Rolls

Mt Morgan Central State School will be holding a Fairy Tale morning for children from Year 2 and under.

The invitation is open to all members of the community to come along and join us for a morning of fun activities.

Various community agencies will also be present.

These are my Freaky Friday Sausage Rolls. I call them Freaky Fridays as I like to make them on Fridays as a quick night meal, so that I don’t miss my footy show and because the sauce and cheese oozes out either end and they look a little freaky. They are simply made up of hotdog sausage or a pork sausage, a spoon of potato, cheese, strip of bacon and a good squirt of your favourite sauce – alll wrapped in puff pastry.

Ingredients: • 6 thin pork sausage (cooked) or 6 hotdog sausages • 12 slices of streaky bacon (or the tail end of the bacon) • 2 cups Deb Potato or cold mash potato • 2 cups cheese • Your favourite sauce - (whether it be BBQ, chilli, tomato or even American Mustard) • A packet of puff pastry sheets • Egg for egg wash

Method: Take your precooked sausages or hot dog sausages and cut them in half across so that you end up with two shorter sausages out of each one. Next, take a sheet of cold but thawed puff pastry.

Cut evenly in half - make two long rectangle shaped pieces out of each sheet of pastry. Now at one end of each sheet, place a good table spoon of the mashed potato - spreading it out to about half a centimetre high and about 4 centimetres wide across one half of the pastry sheet. Now place a good tablespoon of the cheese on the mashed potato. Place a half sausage on top of the cheese and a liberal dash or dollop of your favourite sauce. Now roll up each one tightly and place on a baking tray with the last edge flat on the base of the tray.

Make a few quick slices into the top of the pastry (I use this to help me know which ones have different sauces if I use a variety). Now, put a pinch of salt and your egg in a bowl and whisk with a fork and use a pastry brush to egg wash each sausage roll. Place on a tray seam side down and bake at 220°c for 25 minutes or until the puff pastry is light and fluffy and golden brown. Serve piping hot with your favourite can of soda, or beer for the big kids, or if you have made extra, pop them into the lunch boxes for a quick and easy lunch.

Note: This will make 12, so you might want to scale down a bit or up which ever you need.

Variations: add 1 tblsp curry powder to a cup of tomato sauce, try using Tasty cheese instead of Mozzarella, try Salami instead of bacon, or add 2 tsp of hot Tabasco sauce to 1 cup of BBQ or tomato sauce!
