Glad Mount Morgan got electricity in 1935 because with the past cold days the heaters and blankets have come into their own. Still it is winter.

We continue with our historical snippets of the past which show how progressive our town was and thanks must go to the pioneers who had great foresight to improve all living conditions and work for future benefits for the town.

1937: Messrs TT & C Cornes (local funeral directors) bought the first Motor Hearse, a 1921 Buick which remained registered till 1960. After much restoration it is now a showpiece in the local Museum.

The Range Road (Stopford Highway) was completed to a gravel surface. It was in 1939 that bitumen surfacing was completed but this important section of the Burnett Highway was never officially opened. It will be great to have it in use again soon.

1940: This year saw the finish of horse racing in Mount Morgan which had been conducted in our present Show Grounds area.

1943: A USA. Transport glider being towed by a USA army plane which was on its way to New Guinea was abandoned, possibly due to high winds, and it crashed just behind the Railway Station area. No servicemen were injured and after the glider had been stripped of all instruments etc. it was destroyed by fire. The plane had just continued on its journey. Can you imagine the interest this caused in the town?

1943/44: In these years many USA servicemen enjoyed their weekend R and R in Mount Morgan bringing life and money to the town. The Red Cross had established sleeping accommodation within the School of Arts, many locals housed them for the two days and all hotels were packed out. The servicemen were most grateful for the friendship of locals and enjoyed their release from military duties.

1946: An emergency water supply for fire fighting etc. was installed with 3 x 20000 gallon tanks situated at the top of Gordon Street and filled with water that was pumped by electric motor from a well in the Dee River.

This scheme lasted till 1954 when Fletchers Water Scheme became installed.

1947: Morgan Street was finally bituminised after many years of waiting. Garden plots on both Morgan and East Streets were constructed.

1949: The present fire station building was constructed on land that had a News Agency and Book Shop owned by a former Mayor H Lundager and a café right next to the Q.N.Hotel. Mount Morgan got the tail end of a C.Q. cyclone and quite a lot of damage was received to property from winds and rain.

As usual, please THINK CLEAN – BE TIDY. So little effort for such good results.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION Former Caretakers Residence 36 Thompson Avenue Following a community meeting and survey, Mount Morgan residents have indicated that there are two separate views on how to address the Former Caretakers Residence:  Seek ways to restore it, and  To take down the building and re-use the materials in other projects.

Council would like Mount Morgan residents to assist with exploring both views more extensively and will be sending a mail based survey to all households requesting your thoughts on the two options: 1. Would you prefer to restore the building? o If yes, how would you the complete this task?

2. Would you prefer to take the building down? o If yes, where could the materials be re-used?

Mount Morgan residents/organisations who would like the building restored are encouraged to submit a dedicated business case to Council which includes proposed funding, labour and ways to ensure the building is not vandalised.

Jonathon embarks on exciting new journey

At the time that this issue of the Argus will be filling local letterboxes, local resident Jonathon Stock will be touching down on American soil and gearing up for the experience of a lifetime.

The 18 year old vocal talent will be spending the next two and half weeks in Los Angeles, where he will sing for gold at the 2013 World Championships of Performing Arts.

He is one of 39 aspiring Aussies who were selected from thousands to represent the country in the esteemed event.

The exciting experience follows an already impressive year for Jonathon, who recently released his debut EP ‘Fly Away’.

The official launch was held at the School of Arts late last month and welcomed an impressive crowd of supporters.

The release marked a major milestone for Jonathon in his plans to become a well known recording artist.

“I have been writing songs for a few years and worked on the EP for a few months,” Jonathon said.

“It’s going to be a great experience.”

“I have been receiving some really great feedback on it so far, and it is a great feeling to know that people are enjoying my music.”

The competition marks the first overseas trip for Jonathon, who will spend a couple of days sightseeing before the competition officially kicks off on the 6th.

“I sincerely thank everyone who has been so supportive with the EP launch and my trip overseas. It is greatly appreciated.”

“The first week will include boot camp for participants,” Jonathon said on some of his upcoming itinerary.

The EP was recorded at Four4ty Studios in Melbourne earlier this year and includes the tracks “You Made Me”, “Feeling Right”, “Fly Away” and “Driving into the Sun”.

“I’m really excited about it all,” Jonathon said.

“I will be meeting up with the other Australian competitors at the end of the week and from there we will be doing some preparation work for the competition and also touring around some of the area.”

Competitions will commence the following week, and will see participants from over 40 countries vie for a top place in various events, including singing, dancing, modeling, acting, variety and instrumental.

The Olympic-style competition will consist of rounds of heats for each category, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in the final rounds to top challengers.

“For the singing events, I will be performing five different songs, each restricted to a 60 second performance,” Jonathon said.

“I know I will be up against some very talented people, but win or lose, I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Band is touring as part of the Talisman Sabre exercises being held across the Region and will have their final performance alongside the Australian Army Band Brisbane at the Talisman Sabre Open Day in Rockhampton on Sunday July 14.

Having toured Europe, Queensland and Australia’s major cities, talented musician, Kate Leahy is now bringing her latest EP ‘bring home more’ and The Village Festival Road Trip to eight of Central Queensland’s regional and remote towns.

The show is gearing up to hit the road, and Mount Morgan is scheduled to be its first stop!

With the help of the Keppel Coast Arts Council and Creative Capricorn, Kate will be joined on the Mount Morgan School of Arts stage by some of Queensland’s finest musicians.

And there’s even a chance for you to take part!

Kate is calling all local musicians and music lovers to come along for an opportunity to perform in front of their hometown.

Kate and fellow musicians will be offering free afternoon workshops as part of the event, covering singing, song writing, a variety of musical instruments and music styles.

“With this tour, it’s not just about putting on a show for people, it’s about improving regional music capabilities,” Kate said on the upcoming event.

“It’s about bringing towns and people together through music!

I really want to engage with as many people as possible and get them making music with us.

“We want people of all ages to come to the workshops, rehearse a song with us, and if they are ready, they’ll even have the chance to perform with us in front of their home town that night.”

Workshops will be followed by an evening of live music with performances from Road Trip musicians and local stars.

On the bill are performers KATE LEAHY, WEATHERED, BRAD BUTCHER, LOGAN BREWSTER … and it could also be you on stage.

“CQ has an incredible number of talented musicians and I think it’s time people heard them,” Kate said.

“I wanted to create a tour that showcases our region’s talent, as well as supporting and involving upcoming musicians.

The line up for this tour is incredible. I can’t wait to hit the road! ”

Mount Morgan Central students wrapped up term 2 in an exciting way last month, when they were paid a special visit by the Sunshine Beach State High School Performance Music Program.

Students were treated to a range of spectacular performances, which featured the school’s concert band, stage band, string ensemble, junior and senior percussion ensembles, a 30+ member choir and solo vocalists.

The tour included the entire Performance Music Program, with all ensembles comprised of years 8 to 12 students.

The local visit was part of a weeklong tour for the Sunshine Beach High students which included performances for selected primary schools around the region.

Sunshine Beach State High School are well known on the Sunshine Coast for their music program and have enjoyed much success over the last 10 years; awarded places at local Eisteddfods and Choral Fanfare competitions.

Princesses, pirates, knights and kings … they were all present at Mount Morgan Central on June 19, for the school’s end of semester fairy tale themed celebration.

The Fairy Tale Morning welcomed early grade students, members of the community as well as guests from Kindy Care and Red Frog.

The enchanting event saw attendees don their most impressive fairy tale costumes and enjoy a morning of activities and adventure.

A number of service providers were also welcomed to take part in the morning’s fun, with representatives from the Smith Family, Saver Plus, Red Cross, Family Planning (Protection Through Play), The Umbrella Network, The Hub, and the HIPPY program in attendance.

Each child attending the morning received a book and pamphlets regarding helping with Literacy & Numeracy in the home.

The event was assisted with grant funding, supplied by Communities for Children.

Mount Morgan Rotary’s annual Handover

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan celebrated its annual Handover last month; seeing the official welcome and induction of the 2013/2014 Board.

Approximately 36 people attended the event, which was held at the Grand Hotel, Mount Morgan.

Among the attendees was Assistant Governor, Jan Smith, who officiated at the evening’s ceremony.

The local group are pleased to announce the new Board of the Club as follows: President- Del Rowley, Secretary- Ann Dwyer, TreasurerLyn Thomas, Directors- Andy Johnson, Brian Glover, Helen Jessop, John Steinberger and Kelvin Crone.

During the evening Jan also had the privilege of honouring local member John Steinberger with a Paul Harris Fellowship; an esteemed recognition of Rotary.

This was presented in recognition of John’s valued contribution and support to the local club.

Other members to receive special recognition as part of the event were Helen Jessop and Andrew McCosh, who were presented with an award in appreciation of their personal financial contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

The event also highlighted a number of the 2012-2013 year’s achievements of the group, with some including financial support for Mental Health Research, various fundraising efforts and local fundraisers and continued efforts with RAWCS, which saw a trip to Seghe Island and the distribution of various items for the area’s school and hospital.

Recent trips: Recently, 24 members of the Dee River Oldies Group (formerly known as Safe & Confident Living), had a bus trip to Yeppoon, where we enjoyed morning tea and a show at Footlights Theatre Restaurant, followed by lunch at the Pacific Hotel.

We were joined by 60 members of the 60 Better Program Inc., under whose umbrella we are now operating.

Our raffle, which was a $50 voucher from IGA, was won by Dorothy Mugridge.

Donation to Jonathon Stock’s overseas venture: On Saturday night, Betty Ware (pictured below right), on behalf of the Dee River Oldies, presented a cheque of $200 to Jonathon Stock, to help with his overseas venture.

“It would have been an amusing sight, seeing two women with wheelie walkers carting things up to the village,” Anne laughed.

Backpacks and pencil cases were also distributed to the classrooms by a fellow passenger.

For most people looking to enjoy an island cruise, the thoughts of beautiful beaches, rest and relaxation and warm weather is motivation enough to book a ticket.

Though for local residents, Anne Hunt and Noela Cooper, another incentive was behind their recent holiday cruise.

The two long term friends headed to the islands of Vanuatu earlier this year as a follow on from a prior holiday to the area in 2011.

“The look on the children’s and residents’ faces was wonderful,” Anne said.

“It was a dream to go back and I’m so happy that we were able to.”

Along with visiting Pentecost, Anne and Noela were able to enjoy the beauty of Vila, Wala, Mystery Island and Santo as part of their trip.

“One of the stops during our first trip was Pentecost,” Anne said on the 2011 trip.

“People were able to look around, swim and snorkel, but our main highlight was being able to meet the locals at the Bunlap village and stop in at the school.”

“The school didn’t have much, pretty much nothing at all, but the children were so happy and well educated and treasured what they had.”

The visit made such an impression on the local ladies that they decided to save for another trip to the area, with hopes of bringing gifts with them the next time round.

“We decided then and there that we would go back and if we could, bring a few things for the children and the school,” Anne said.

The ladies then spent the following months saving for their trip, and also began an impressive collection of gifts.

“Each time I’d go shopping, I would think about things that we could take, and end up coming home with more to add to the pile,” Noela laughed.

Despite some setbacks and health issues along the way, the ladies achieved their goal to revisit Pentecost early this year, setting off on a cruise for the islands of Vanuatu in April.

The ladies brought with them a large bag filled with stationary items, including books, rulers, erasers, crayons and pencils.

Hi Argus readers, Well, we’re now more than half way through the year!

Time is certainly flying, and as scary as that is, the plus side is that there are quite a few exciting events to look forward to in the upcoming weeks and months.

Two highlights on the Mount Morgan calendar are of course the 2013 Agricultural Show - which is just a few weeks away, and also the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival which will be held in early December.

We are excited to announce that the second half of the year will also see our organsiation host a few community events. Here are a few details:

MMPAD’s recent fundraisers: Speaking of events, a huge thanks goes to the Mount Morgan community for your tremendous support of the two fundraisers held at the School of Arts last Saturday.

These events were a cent sale and trivia night; with both held in aim of raising funds for the Village Festival Road Trip’s visit to Mount Morgan.

We are very pleased to announce that thanks to the great response for both fundraisers, we have raised all required funds to cover the cost of this event.

Upcoming events:

Cent Sale: The cent sale was well attended, and also saw a number of prizes donated by local businesses and members of the community.

Village Festival Road Trip – Friday, July 19: Don’t forget to head to the School of Arts on July 19, for the Village Festival Road Trip’s visit to Mount Morgan!

A sincere thanks to all who came along, all who made donations, and also to our volunteers on the day! Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

Talented musician Kate Leahy will be bringing a number of impressive artists to the Mount for this special event, which will include free music workshops, followed by an evening of live entertainment. For further details, see page 6 and 13 of this issue.

This was our first cent sale fundraiser, and we look forward to the next.

Working Bee: Toward the end of this month, we are looking to have a working bee at the rest stop located at the top of the Mount Morgan Range. With the reopening of the Range expected fairly soon, this is a great opportunity to see the rest stop looking impressive.

This project is set to include general tidying along with gardening. Please contact us if you would be interested in taking part and would like further details.

Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Day: It’s a little while away yet, but be sure to mark this one in your calendars… Sunday the 1st of September marks National Wattle Day. Given that Mount Morgan is home to the Mount Morgan Silver Wattle, we are looking to mark this date with a special local event, set to be held at the Mount Morgan Dam. The day will include games and activities, a sausage sizzle and possibly even an opportunity to take home your very own Silver Wattle.

MMPAD AGM Results: We are also pleased to announce the new MMPAD Executive, following our Annual General Meeting which was held last Monday. The 2013/2014 Executive is: President: John Steinberger, Vice President: Rosemary Izzard, Secretary: Del Rowley, Treasurer: Andrew McCosh, Executive Member: Heike Steinberger.

Trivia Night: We were blown away by the huge response for our very first trivia night, with over 100 people in attendance.

17 teams took up the 8 round trivia challenge (set out by our Project Officer); with two teams making a special trip from Rockhampton for the event.

First place and the $200 cash prize were won by local team “Red Oil”. Congratulations to team members, Jayne and Grant Farrell, Del Rowley, Heike Steinberger, Chris O’Leary and John Tuxworth.

Rockhampton team, “Einstein Faction” took home second place and the $100 prize. Congratulations to team members Bob and Sue Kelly, Adam Black, Leanne Case, Margaret Black and Drew Murphy.

We sincerely thank all who attended and helped make the evening so much fun.

We will definitely by hosting another trivia night in the future, so be sure to keep up on those general knowledge studies.

Representatives of local emergency services are pleased to announce the commencement of the Mount Morgan Disaster Management Group.

This committee has representatives from your local SES, Fire, Ambulance, Police, Hospital and John Cani Aged Hostel and we also have input and guidance from the Rockhampton Regional Council’s Disaster Management Officer.

Mountain Mick’s Carrot, Banana & Chocolate Muffins

This group has been formed as a result of the extreme weather events that the local area has faced during recent years and months.

During 2010/2011 and again this year during the Australia Day weekend, the local area saw significant weather events cause major flooding and damage to infrastructure.

As many are aware, some of the major difficulties faced during these times were damage and/or loss of road access, power, and phone communications.

As emergency service agencies, loss of telephone communications was one of the main issues that we had to deal with during the January flood event. This was a major concern, as if there was an emergency, there would have been no phones to report and respond the appropriate service. Our teams were required to put plans into place to see services manned 24hrs a day until phones returned and a radio network was set up so that all the emergency services could communicate to each other and respond as necessary. In this case we were extremely lucky that we had no major incidents.

These events have highlighted the benefits of seeing a Disaster Management Committee formed, and with that, the establishment of action plans and procedures that would further assist these kinds of circumstances.

What the committee is currently working on: • Fine tuning our Emergency Service radio network and callout procedures.

• Formulate action plans: 1. How we can notify the public that we have no phones.

2. How the public can raise the alarm for an emergency if the whole of our town has no Normal or Mobile phones.

The committee, through the ARGUS will keep the community informed as we finalise our action plans.

Here is a great kick up on the carrot and banana cake - add chocolate and cook as a muffin and you’ve got a winner for winter lunch box treats or just for having with a hot cuppa at smoko on these chilly days. Of course, by adding that cream cheese icing, well that kick is out of this world.

Hope you enjoy this and I know a chap that hated carrot but he eats my Carrot, Banana & Chocolate Muffins - must be the chocolate.

Ingredients: • Olive oil, to grease • 3 (about 400g) carrots (squeeze a little lemon juice over) • 2 ripe bananas, mashed • 1 ½ cups (150g) self-raising flour • 130g packet of walnuts • 1 ½ tsp ground Chinese 5 Spice • 1/2 cup (80g) brown sugar • 3/4 cup (185ml) oil • 1/2 cup (125ml) golden syrup • 100g chocolate chips • 3 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla essence • pinch of salt Ingredients for icing: • 250g spreadable cream cheese • 1/2 cup (80g) icing sugar • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a muffin pan lightly with oil. Peel and grate the carrots and set aside. Sift the flours and cinnamon into a large bowl.

2. Put the brown sugar, oil, golden syrup, eggs and vanilla in a separate bowl. Use a balloon whisk to mix until combined.

3. Pour the oil mixture into the dry ingredients. Use a wooden spoon to stir gently until just combined. Stir in the grated carrot & walnuts.

4. Spoon the mixture into the each muffin pan and bake for 25 to 35 minutes. Set aside for 5 minutes, before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

5. To make the icing, place the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla in a bowl. Use a wooden spoon to mix until well combined.

6. Spread the icing over each muffin and sprinkle with shaved chocolate.
