Recently the question was asked by a young University graduate if we could recall how the Mine payroll was calculated prior to adding machines and computers. Being the sole survivor of that 1940’s era, I explained the system to her. She was amazed and intrigued by the simplicity and efficiency. From her response we thought perhaps other young IT users, students, plus our readers may like to know how things did work without machines. Payroll Calculations: On Monday morning the five payroll books with all employees’ hours recorded, and overtime being colour coded, were given to 5 teams of 2 members per team. Each book contained 7 A3 sized sheets, in duplicate, each sheet having approximately 30 employees listed. Each team would commence calculating the gross pay and when both members were finished, the two people would check to see if both agreed or if alterations were necessary. Then calculation of tax and all deductions would be subtracted from the gross and the nett pay resulting. Again team members did another full check for correct nett pays. The full sheet was then added and the final totals check was done by the team. The payroll was completed when all 5 teams were finished, roughly 10 hours per team. Change Dissection. (Pounds, shillings and pence): Next step was performed by listing the required money denominations for each of the 35 sheets then added to produce a grand total that had to agree with the grand total of the payroll. On Tuesday morning no later than 11am, the Bank was advised the denominations of monies that were required for the entire payroll. Wednesday: Collection of money and counting: The paymaster and one clerk both armed (wild west style) went to the Bank, different car and different route each fortnight, and were met there by an armed policeman who remained on duty till 5pm. The counting section took 3 teams of 3 persons. Firstly all monies from the bank were counted for correctness. Next all required notes, coins etc (from the Coinage Dissection sheet) were placed for each sheet with the corresponding envelopes. Finally the team leader counted the money shown on the envelope and handed it to next team member to count while the envelope went face down to the third person. The second person counted the money and told the third person the amount. If correct with envelope it was then folded and placed in envelope. If not correct, a recount was necessary. Sorry, no money is left over. It was a good working system (for the brain) effective and accurate, and a good learning curve for many clerks.

A new exhibition has been opened at the Rockhampton Art Gallery, featuring works by Mount Morgan’s very own Beres Austin and Stacy Hayes. The local ladies make up part of Murri Girls Into Art, a local group who are presenting their inaugural exhibition of fine silk artwork at the gallery over the upcoming weeks. The Murri Girls Into Art Exhibition was officially opened last Friday evening and features impressive individual works by each of the group’s members. The exhibition has been months in the making for the ladies, who met together more than five years ago. Over the years the group have undertaken studies at TAFE and developed a business plan to begin their own arts enterprise.

β€œIt is just a really great group to work with,” Stacy said. β€œWe all do different things and have different ideas and it’s been really nice being able to work together and see what we all come up with.” The exhibition has been funded by Arts Queensland and supported by Creative Capricorn, an initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council. The Murri Girls Into Art Exhibition is open daily at the Rockhampton Art Gallery until August 18. Local residents Beres Austin and Stacy Hayes are among the artists to have works featured in an exciting new exhibition, Murri Girls Into Art. Pictured: Beres (directly below) and Stacy stand beside some of their work featured in the exhibition.

They had been meeting weekly over the past 12 months to work on the pieces now on display, using ancient Japanese techniques of Shibori and Arashi to create their vibrant silk artworks. Some of the techniques employed by the women include using wax, sea salt and urea and then dipping or painting the silk with brightly coloured dyes, or wrapping which results in diagonal pleats in the fabric. Along with individual pieces, the exhibition features a showcase piece which was collectively created by the group. The piece, entitled β€œDjupu” meaning carpet snake in the traditional language of the Gurreng Gurreng people, presents a 48 metre bolt of fabric suspended from the ceiling in the gallery and coiled on the floor. The piece symbolises the storytelling inherent in the Murri Girls’ work. Discussing the exhibition at its official opening, Beres said it was exciting to see the group’s hard work come to fruition. β€œIt has been a lot of work, particularly over the past twelve months to get to this stage, but we are very fortunate to have had great support along the way,” Beres said. β€œI really hope that the community of Rockhampton and Mount Morgan enjoy the exhibition. β€œIt’s been something new for each of us and from what we’ve been told, some of the pieces displayed have never been done here in Australia.” Along with the hard work, Beres and Stacy agree it has also been a lot fun.

Centenary celebrations for the Mt Morgan Ambulance Station

The Mount Morgan Ambulance Station will celebrate its 100th birthday this month, on Saturday the 27th of July. Residents of Mount Morgan are invited to attend an Open Day which will be held at the local Ambulance Station at 21 Dee Street, Mount Morgan between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm. The Mount Morgan Local Ambulance Committee are proudly sponsoring and supporting their local StationΓ’€™s celebrations by holding a sausage sizzle and official "Cutting of Centenary Cake". Ambulance vehicles, equipment and memorabilia of both bygone and present era shall be on display, with the generous assistance of the Mount Morgan Museum. An important feature of our celebrations will be a vintage Ambulance vehicle on display which will be transported from the Ambulance Museum located in Brisbane.

The Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade was disbanded in June 1991 and became a State Government body now known as the Queensland Ambulance Service (Q.A.S.) in July 1991. Our current Ambulance fleet consists of a Ford 350 2 stretcher vehicle and a brand new Toyota 4 x 4 Modular single stretcher vehicle which was delivered in April 2013. Staff establishment totals 5 paramedics, consisting of an Officer in Charge and 4 Paramedics who provide 24 hour coverage to our local community and surrounding area. We look forward to seeing you all on our special occasion. Come along and meet your local Ambos' and help us celebrate this milestone in Ambulance history! - Kevin Porter Acting Officer-in-Charge, Mount Morgan Ambulance.

The Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade Mount Morgan was the 13th Q.A.T.B. to commence operations in Queensland. Early beginnings saw the service begin in January 1913, in a room at the Town Hall. By February, the Brigade was established in a two storey building in East Street. A new Ambulance Building was later opened in Central Street in July, 1913 (pictured right). The first equipment comprised of a hand pushed stretcher-bearing litter. Later a horse drawn litter was employed and in 1915 the Brigade acquired its first motor vehicle, which was a 40 horse power dodge. Unfortunately fire destroyed the centre in Central Street in 1928. Operations continued from a private residence in Coates Street and then from premises on Carlton Hill (Carlton Lane) until a new centre was built at 21 Dee Street and opened on the 6th of April, 1963. This centre was later demolished and the present station (pictured right) was built at the same location and officially opened on 3rd of December, 2009

The Mount Morgan Ambulance Station celebrated the official handover of a brand new emergency vehicle earlier this month. A Toyota Landcruiser modular single stretcher 4X4 vehicle was officially presented to the local station on Thursday, July 4. The handover was carried out by Assistant Minister for Emergency Volunteers, Ted Malone. Acting Officer in Charge for the Mount Morgan Station, Mr Kevin Porter proudly accepted the keys on behalf of the local crew. β€œWe are really proud to have this new vehicle,” Mr Porter said during the official handover. β€œIt replaces our old four-wheel drive Mercedes Benz, and comes with upgrades to all the previous vehicle’s equipment and technology.” Among the upgrade is the inclusion of a Stryker Stretcher and Stryker Chair; a first for the local Station. β€œThis is the first time we’ve had a Stryker stretcher and chair, and we’re really happy to have these,” Mr Porter said. β€œThey’re designed to help emergency staff move immobile patients safely and quickly and really help when stairways or uneven ground is involved.” MP Ted Malone said he was proud to be involved in the vehicle’s official handover. β€œIt’s great that Mount Morgan has been able to get a brand new ambulance,” Mr Malone said. β€œThe landcruiser is the latest model and is certainly the next step forward for the QLD Ambulance Service.” The Mount Morgan Ambulance Station is now home to a brand new emergency vehicle, which comes complete with new and improved equipment. Pictured, Acting Officer in Charge, QAS Mount Morgan, Kevin Porter and MP Ted Malone stand near the new vehicle, and the newly acquired Stryker Chair.

The weekend began on a high note for a number of local residents last Saturday morning, when they were treated to a sensational performance by the U.S. 7th Fleet Band.

Held at the School of Arts Hall, the event attracted around 150 people, with many eager to hear from the group well known for their impressive and highly acclaimed performances. The local event certainly proved to be no exception, with the Band wowing the crowd throughout the show. The morning kicked off with a number of outstanding performances from the Band’s Brass Quintet, which was followed by impressive numbers from their Woodwind Trio. The New Orleans style Brass Band then had the hall abuzz with excitement with their jazz numbers, which was only further heightened by a performance by the All Hands Concert Band as the morning’s finale.

Pictured above: members of the New Orleans’s style Brass Band perform to the local crowd.

Numbers ranged from classical to modern pop, which even included a Michael Jackson number as well as a surprising and entertaining rendition of Psy’s β€œGangham Style” - sung in Korean by the lead vocalist and completed with a somersault from the School of Arts Stage. The show was one of six performed in the region by the 7th Fleet Band, held as part of the recent Talisman Saber exercises. The band completed their final regional performance alongside the Australian Army Band Brisbane at the Talisman Saber Open Day at the Rockhampton Showgrounds last Sunday. More on the U.S. 7th Fleet Band: The U.S. 7th Fleet Band is based in Yokosuka, Japan. As with any military band, the U.S 7th Fleet Band plays an important role in entertaining the troops and boosting their morale, as well as strengthening the bonds in communities during military exercises.

News on the 2013 Mount Morgan Show

Organising is in full swing with a slow start to the year with a few of our members quite ill but I am glad to say that they are all on the mend. Our showgrounds are looking fantastic thanks to the Neato Work for the Dole program. I can’t thank the men and women enough for what they have done. Okay, onto this year’s entertainment... Liberty Horse Performances will once again be at this year’s show and will see Scott and his faithful horses put on more spectacular performances. The Crackup Sisters have also been booked. After their outstanding display at the Golden Mount Festival we thought they would be a great addition to our show. First Light Entertainment is also back again this year with their stilt walking displays and circus style workshop. Old McDonald’s Travelling Farm will also be attending from 10am till 2pm. With their own marquee they have baby goats, sheep, alpacas, guinea pigs, piglets and more. They are sure to be a hit with both the young and old.

Also, we have our craft pavilion, poultry pavilion, market stalls, canteen, side show alley, horse and cattle events, licensed bar operating, and to finish off the show- our spectacular fireworks! Programmes went out last week and are available at different locations around Mount Morgan, Bouldercombe, Gracemere and Rockhampton and at no cost this year. Once again if anyone is available to help out it would be greatly appreciated. Silver Wattle proves a golden opportunity Since beginning their business at the Silver Wattle Caravan Park in 1994, local residents Peter and Elizabeth Morrish have welcomed visitors from throughout the country and the world to Mount Morgan. But after almost two decades with the park, the local pair have decided it’s time to put up their feet. β€œWe’ve decided it’s time to kick back a little,” Peter said. β€œWe’ve worked the majority of our lives and now both 67, we thought that it was a good time to stop working.” When asked on what plans the couple have for the future, they both agreed on β€˜none’. β€œFor now we don’t plan on doing much at all,” Elizabeth laughed. β€œWe won’t be making a move though, we love Mount Morgan, it’s a beautiful town.”

7

β€œWe loved it, loved the town and decided that we were going to make the move.” Mark and Sarah, along with their two children – Billie, 4 and Diesel, 2, made the move to Mount Morgan from Wesburn, Victoria two weeks ago. β€œWe’re really enjoying it here,” Sarah said. β€œRunning a caravan park is certainly something new and exciting for us, and we are really looking forward to getting into it all, and also getting to know the community.” Congratulations Mark and Sarah on your new venture at the Silver Wattle, and also to Peter and Elizabeth on your retirement! Pictured: Mark and Sarah Dalton and Elizabeth and Peter Morrish.

The couple said that although they will miss their time at the park, they are leaving with many fond memories. β€œWe have really enjoyed our time here,” Peter said. β€œIt’s been a real privilege to welcome people to Mount Morgan over the years.” The decision to finish at the park now sees a new chapter in life - for not only Peter and Elizabeth, but also for the park’s new owners, Mark and Sarah Dalton. β€œOwning a caravan park is something Mark and I have wanted to do for a long time,” Sarah said on the official takeover. β€œWe saw the Silver Wattle advertised online and made a trip here earlier in the year.”

The Mount Morgan Laurel Club held its monthly meeting for July at the CWA Hall on Thursday the 4th, and welcomed eight Laurel Club ladies and five Legacy members. This month’s meet proved extra special for our club, as it is also the month that will see one of our members, Mrs Dorothy Mugridge, turn 90 years young! In honour of Dorothy and in celebration of her momentous milestone, we held a small birthday party as part of our meeting. Dorothy was presented with a birthday cake and birthday card as part of the morning’s celebrations, with the rest of the meet spent enjoying morning tea and playing bingo. Again, a very big Happy Birthday to Dorothy, from all club members! Further details: The Laurel Club of Mount Morgan is a social club; run by Legacy members. The Laurel Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at the CWA Hall.

People in Profile: Ian and Keri Traynor

By Heather Quarry Nine years or nine decades, it doesn’t matter. When you get the mountain air flowing through your blood it becomes a part of you. Newcomers and long termers within Mount Morgan’s historic boundaries all have wonderful positive stories to tell of their experiences. Keri and Ian Traynor are no exception. They are in their ninth year living in Mount Morgan and have enjoyed the tranquility and the people. Keri, who has one brother and one sister, was born in Sydney on the 23rd of January 1952. Through her school years in Sydney she loved the crafty side of things. Her favourite subjects were English, Science, Maths and Spelling. β€œI was good at those subjects and really liked spelling.” Keri’s favourite colour is green. She loves pop music, plain food (nothing too spicy), has a sweet tooth and loves herbal tea. She gets together with a group of friends for morning tea each week - who call themselves the Morning Tea Ladies. On Saturdays Keri heads to Rockhampton for Bingo. β€œI was a bit of a rebel as a teenager,” Keri recalls with a laugh. β€œWhen I was about 17 I used to go to clubs. It was 21 to legally get in but they didn’t ask for ID back then.” She used to dance when younger but didn’t do any β€œreally bad things” she says convincingly. Keri got her drivers licence when she was 18 and enjoyed the freedom of getting out and about when she wanted to. Most of her working life was in the clerical field and before having children she worked for an optical firm. Keri was a proud stay at home mum, enjoying her children’s progress through the years. Since moving to Mount Morgan she has been working full time in the local Post Office. Ian Frances Traynor has three brothers, one half brother and two sisters. He was born on the 14th of October, 1948 in the family home on the side of Mount Macedon, Victoria. β€œMum got it wrong when I was born and put an E in Frances instead of as I on my birth certificate. She can’t spell,” he jokingly laughs. School years were spent in Victoria with his final years of attendance being at the Mildura Technical College. He always enjoyed Technical Drawing. β€œI never did like arithmetic or reading. I know more about maths now than I ever learned at school,” he states very strongly. Ian played Aussie Rules football, tennis and golf. He now enjoys outdoor bowls. His favourite music is Country. β€œWhen I was younger, girls came into it but not very often. I used to do the usual things that blokes get up to, like hide around the corner drinking elicit drinks now and then. Ian smoked cigarettes most of his life, β€œfrom about 15 upwards til round about 15 years ago I gave it up, then took it up again for five years when I came to Mount Morgan. I gave it up again after my heart attack in 2008 when I was 60 years old.” β€œFishing was one of my pet loves,” Ian explains about his teenage years. β€œIt was always fresh water fishing when I was a kid and salt water fishing later on.” His favourite fresh water fish to eat is Cod and Red Emperor is his favourite salt water fish.

Serving six years in the Army, Ian did two Vietnam tours. Once returning home he found himself ducking when he heard loud noises or cars backfiring, but he still believes males and females should all do a time in the services to learn respect and discipline. β€œIt took close on 50 years before the Vietnam Vets were recognised,” he states quietly. Ian was retrenched from his management position for a shipping company at 55 years of age. He worked for the company for nine years. Before then he was employed for nine years, again in a management position, for another company. He says with a laugh β€œI might make it to the ten year mark with the Post Office. I will stay here until I retire but it won’t be for a while yet I hope. I wouldn’t move back to city ever. I’ve met some good friends since I’ve been here as well. I may not live here forever but I wouldn’t go back to the city regardless.” He was out of work for 18 months before seeing the Post Office position on the internet. Keri met Ian at a Tupperware party. β€œHe wasn’t actually a guest. I was having a party at a friend’s place and he moved into the flat the day before but I didn’t know,” she says with a huge grin. Ian had returned from his second tour of active duty in Vietnam. He and a friend decided they’d had enough of barracks living so shared the expenses of a flat. Keri had long hair for many years but had it cut short when she was 19. At 20 she met Ian who asked her to grow her hair long. She informed him she had only just gotten it cut and she has kept it short ever since. In their dating years they used to go to the drive-in, enjoy holidays and sight seeing drives together. They were married on the 6th of March 1976 and have no regrets when it comes to their 37 years of marriage. Keri wore a white wedding gown and held red roses. Ian wore a brown suit with a different coloured lapel. It rained all week leading up to their wedding but only drizzled a little on their big day.

People in Profile continued: They have three adult children (two girls and one boy) who still live in Sydney. None are married. Keri would love grandchildren but says β€œhaving two studying and one with a physical disability (spina bifida) I won’t hold my breath, as nice as it would be.” They love animals and have two cats and two birds that are not just their pets but part of their family. When their children were younger Keri and Ian spent a lot of their time driving them to football, soccer or netball games and enjoyed camping trips. They sold their boat when they moved to Mount Morgan. Now owning a little run-about Keri says β€œit will have to be a retirement thing to use it now I think. The run-about hasn’t been in the water since we’ve been here.” Keri and Ian are in their ninth year living in the Mount after deciding to buy the Mount Morgan Post Office. Their first trip here was to look at the business. The lifestyle in the Mount appealed to them and they find it rewarding working in a building that is 100 years old. They entertain at home with friends sharing a barbecue and get together quite regularly, but don’t get the time to go out much. In retirement they would love to do the grey nomad thing and eventually find a place to settle. Keri and Ian have both spent a lot of time travelling overseas and now wish to spend the rest of their lives on ground. When asked about what changes they’d like to see happen for Mount Morgan Ian states strongly β€œI’d like to see money spent here instead of touch up jobs being done. Superficially repairing things doesn’t work. I like the people in Mount Morgan. They are amicable people and I like the laid back life.” One article is not enough to highlight the interesting stories of Keri and Ian, so in future issues we shall endeavour to share more of their life’s experiences.

Council has endorsed a submission to spend $578,322 in funding on the proposed extension of the Mount Morgan Sewerage Scheme. Chair of Council’s Water Committee, Councillor Greg Belz said this would enable the expedition of the planned project, which is much needed. β€œThis will address a number of issues that have arisen as a result of failing on-site wastewater treatment systems,” Cr Belz said. β€œWith the onsite waste water management systems of 11 properties also failing it was imperative that Fitzroy River Water assist residents to eliminate the need for installing expensive solutions that would become redundant with the provision of reticulated sewerage. β€œThis is an example of FRW pressing ahead laying strong and effective water and sewerage infrastructure foundations for current residents and future generations.” Cr Belz said the project would involve 7 stages, each at a cost of about $250,000. β€œThe 7 stages of the initial scheme target the 11 critical properties and capture a total of 88 properties,” Cr Belz said. β€œConstruction of the stages will take place over a 3 year period from 2013 – 2016.” β€œThe project involves the extension of the existing sewer network to target those critical properties and ultimately provide reticulated sewerage services to approximately 450 properties.” For more information contact Rockhampton Regional Council on 1300 22 55 77 Article supplied.

Work Experience: Twenty-four year ten students and one year twelve student participated in Work Experience this week (17th June – 21st June). The students attended a range of businesses in a range of industries from Carpentry, through to Hairdressing, to IT and even Cattle Handling. The students were visited by Mrs Payne and I to check their progress, and the feedback received was very positive. During the visits I was able to see some of the students in action, Raymond Stewart was working on a new Toyota LandCruiser at Ian Weigh, Kain Campion had been polishing Hand Guns (under very close supervision!) at Campco, Darren O’Brien was working his way around the kitchen at Good Company and Kaitlyn Deklerk and Brett Winterbottom were busily rearranging the display of stock at JB Hi-Fi, just to list a few. Pictured is Meghan Rebech at The Safari Room, Rockhampton. Both students and business representatives were very pleased with the experience they had so far and the students were given high praise. One employer even said that it was a shame the experience was only for a week. As well as our year ten students attending Work Experience, we also have a small number of students attending weekly Work Experience days at local Child Care Centres. The students are completing this Work Experience as a component of their Certificate II or III Community Services courses, provided by CQ Institute of TAFE. TAFE: This week also marked the first TAFE Block for our year 11 Hospitality students. The students travelled to Rockhampton to learn new skills in the busy TAFE kitchen and gain some real insight into the workings of an industrial kitchen. The students were accompanied for the week by Lyn Porter, who this year has become our dedicated Vocational Education and Training Teacher Officer. On their first day in the kitchen the students learnt how to make a hollandaise sauce starting at cracking the egg (no cheating) as well as other skills. The second day was going to see the students baking some Frangipani Tarts. I wish I could say I got to taste these treats but when I asked the students about making me Eggs Benedict, Angel Dolan laughingly said, β€œJust because we can, doesn’t mean we will.” I will get some cooking from them somehow though! Senior Schooling at Mount Morgan this semester has been very different to those of the past as our partnership with TAFE increases as well as through the partnership with other Registered Training Organisations.

A congratulations to Celine Lennox and Phivie Bird must also be given for their work towards attaining their Certificate II in Retail through their employment and SmartSkill. These two students worked independently to have their skills recognised and awarded. There is also a class of students completing their Certificate II in Retail with SmartSkill and TAFE this year, directed by classroom teacher Jessica Tones. This is a trial program for our school and SmartSkill and we hope that it will lead to a successful program in the future. Some of our partnerships with TAFE are continuing from last year as well including the Certificate I in Construction and the conclusion of the Certificate II in Engineering for our year twelve students. TAFE generously supplies a teacher to come to the school each Friday for our construction students and they are enabled to work on projects that enhance our school as well as enrich their learning. A group of students, as well as teacher, Andrew Warr, also travel down to the TAFE Rockhampton campus on a weekly basis to undertake the Engineering course and gain access to a wide range of resources and industry quality machinery. CQUniversity: As well as the many opportunities our students have with TAFE, we are also continuing to develop a strong link with CQUniversity Australia. Five students will attend the university in the coming week for a Great Race program which will enable the students to see what university is really like, whilst meeting like-minded students, aiming to continue their studies after graduation. Our school has a number of great supporters, whether it be through Work Experience, Learning Opportunities or appearances at school functions and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the staff and students to thank these generous businesses. Our Tourism Room: Our last Argus update discussed the reopening of Mount Morgan High’s Tourism Room, thanks to the efforts of a number of our students! A very big thanks to Mayor Margaret Strelow, who made a special visit to Mount Morgan High last Friday to have a look at the students’ impressive works with this room. Pictured is Mayor Strelow and senior students Harry Dent and Celine Lennox. Don’t forget that this room is open to the public for viewing. We would like to welcome members of the community to stop by and enjoy some of the history of Mount Morgan High. Kylie Stanger Head of Department – Senior Schooling

For local resident Emma Benjamin, each week sees a number of hours dedicated to two very different interests: barrel racing and childcare.

β€œEmma does a great job assisting us here at Red Frog, and also in her barrel races, so it’s great that we have been able to present her with these items.”

The senior student of Mount Morgan High is currently completing her Certificate III in Childcare and also spends a number of afternoons practising for barrel racing competitions.

Emma’s talents in barrel racing have seen her compete in a number of esteemed competitions, including the annual Trans Tasman School Rodeo Challenge, which saw Emma represent the country in New Zealand earlier this year.

Last week saw both of Emma’s interests combine, when she received a surprise presentation by Mount Morgan Red Frog 4 Early Childcare Education.

Pictured are Cecilia and Mark Moger, Emma Benjamin and Emma’s horse Storm (wearing the newly presented winter rug).

Emma, who is completing her Certificate III with the Red Frog, was recently presented with a winter rug and saddle pad by the local business in support of her talents in barrel racing. Owners of Red Frog, Mark and Cecilia Moger said they were excited to be able to support Emma in her racing endeavours. β€œLike Emma, we have also had an interest in horses and horse sports,” Mark said. β€œIn fact, I actually used to ride in events against Emma’s grandfather.” NAIDOC Week at Mount Morgan Central NAIDOC Week at Mount Morgan Central NAIDOC Week at Mount Morgan Central NAIDOC

Last week, July 7 – 14, marked NAIDOC Week, 2013. In addition to in-class activities throughout the week, Mount Morgan Central State School celebrated this event with a special parade held last Thursday. The event, which was held at the front lawn of the school, welcomed students, parents and members of the community. The event began with acknowledgement of country by Janaya Bray, Carla-Delle Wilkes-Hayden, Savannah Alden and Keanna Martin. This was followed by a short yet inspiring presentation by Year 4 student, Ryan Allen, who shared his thoughts on NAIDOC: β€œWe celebrate NAIDOC because the Indigenous people are important to us. We learn about their culture. We are friends with all cultures.” The parade included the presentation of the school’s annual Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Awards, including Academic, Cultural, Citizen and Sportsmanship awards. Congratulations to the following students were received awards on the day: Academic award recipients: Savannah Alden, Mary Rose Donald-Nord, Zephyr Jacobson, Bridget Regan, Jackson Mansell, Cayte Desmond and Julian Oram.

Now I had a few people ask me if I could do a winter warmer for both people watching their weight and diabetics. Well, here is one that I make every winter and can be whipped up at a moment’s notice. This one is not as heavy as some and I have bulked it out with veggies. As for the name, it come from most likely the 1890s, by hotel cook William β€œBill” King of the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia… a lot of Australians from 70’s believe it was named after TV chef extraordinaire Bernard King, but others have claimed it as their own. This is my β€œCheats Chicken A-la-King”. Hope you enjoy!

Shopping list: β€’ 1 kg of chicken thigh fillets diced/cube β€’ 3 medium brown onions β€’ 200g button mushrooms (quartered) β€’ 1kg frozen mixed veggies β€’ 1 small red capsicum diced or a small tin will do β€’ ΒΌ cups of olive oil β€’ 2 tablespoons of cracked garlic β€’ 1/8 teaspoon of salt or a good pinch of salt flakes β€’ A good shaking of pepper - about ΒΌ teaspoon β€’ ΒΌ cup dried parsley β€’ 1lt chicken stock β€’ 2 X 400g tins of Light & Creamy β€’ 100ml sweet sherry

Method: Simply, heat oil in large pot, then add onions and cook until clear but not brown. Now add chicken and stir for 5 minutes. Next, add chicken stock, then add garlic, pepper & parsley. Bring to the boil and now turn down to a simmer. Add thawed frozen veggies and capsicum. Add in the Light & Creamy and sweet sherry and simmer for 10 minutes. Now add the mushrooms. Put the lid on and simmer for 20 minute more, thicken with cornflour and water as a paste. Simmer for 5 minutes and now serve on toasted Vienna bread or sour-dough or on rice or pasta. The left over makes great jaffles. This dish will go well with a sweet sherry or a dry white wine, or even a lemon infused green tea.
