This is not to lament the past, merely to give thought to the way things were. Having lived in four States, I looked forward to my trip to the letter box to receive my weekly letter from home. It was always three or four pages long and so I was kept informed of family news. These days the art of letter writing has gone, to be replaced by text, Twitter, Facebook etc. Put your news on FB for all and sundry to read, comment and pass it on. I heard of a young couple doing their wedding invitations via the net. At the time I thought it sad, and then thought maybe they had something here. They were really pretty tech savvy. Think of the money saved on stamps, paper and envelopes. Mobile phones are also so convenient and small; technology in your pocket. Speaking of phones… Have you ever lived in the country where your only contact with the outside world was via “party line”? You’d pick up the handset and listen to see if anyone else was using it; if it was free you’d use the connecting ring code. There were a number of properties sharing the one line and sometimes much gossip was overheard. Whatever did we do pre television? The wireless was our source of keeping abreast of world events and music for adults and children. We all had our favourite serials, “Blue Hills” which became “The Lawson’s” (or was that the opposite?) We had sing songs around the piano, regular dances and balls where the ladies went all out in their lovely full length ball gowns, then later the ballerina length became popular. Sport was so important with tennis, football, cricket, vigero, basketball and picnics were always popular. Our bikes were ridden everywhere; school, pictures or visiting. We learned our spelling and tables by rote which is laughed at today by the academia, but it stayed in our head for all-time. We learnt “copy book” writing. We were taught to respect our teachers, parents, police and our elders. Maybe I’m being too simplistic and looking through rose coloured glasses, but with all the mod cons and time savers are we better off? What do we do with the time we saved? So with our noses pointed towards the future, it doesn’t hurt to look back at the way things were.

Centenary Celebrations for the Mount Morgan Ambulance
From humble beginnings as a one room facility and hand held stretcher-bearing litters, to today’s fully equipped centre and its emergency vehicles; the Mount Morgan Ambulance Service has certainly seen its share of changes since 1913. Last Saturday saw the local service celebrate these changes and its 100th year in the community with an Open Day held at the Mount Morgan station. More than 80 people joined ambulance staff and members of the Local Ambulance Committee to mark the major milestone. The station played host to a number of impressive displays as part of the special celebrations; presenting equipment, memorabilia, photographs and even vehicles of both bygone and present eras. Attendees were also invited to take a guided tour through the entire centre – a first for the station since its opening in 2009. “This is the first time we have had all doors of the station opened to the public,” Acting Officer in Charge, Kevin Porter said on the day. “It has been great taking members of the community through the full facility and explaining what room does what.” Kevin said the staff also enjoyed being able to present some of the service’s important and early history. “It’s been a real learning experience for us in researching and setting up for the day. “Seeing just how far we have come over the years is remarkable.” Kevin said. History tells that the Mount Morgan Ambulance commenced its service in January 1913, operating from a room in the Town Hall. The same year saw the brigade formed and a two storey structure acquired in East Street, followed by a new centre in Central Street. Later years saw a major fire destroy the centre, which then saw operations continue from other premises. A new centre was built in 1963, which was replaced with today’s station in 2009. Early equipment included a hand pushed stretcherbearing litter, which was later upgraded to a horse drawn litter. Today’s station is home to two emergency vehicles, with the most recently acquired ambulance coming equipped with the latest upgrades and a Stryker Stretcher. Top right: Melissa and Jacob look through some of the photographs on display as part of the event. Middle right: The celebrations also included a sausage sizzle, the cutting of the Centenary cake, and the lowering of a time capsule (to be reopened in thirty years’ time). Pictured: Acting Officer in Charge- Kevin Porter, Officer in Charge- Graham Roberts and President of the Local Ambulance Committee – Brian Glover, lower the capsule. Right: A highlight of the day’s displays included a 1955 ambulance, which was brought from Brisbane to be included in the special celebrations. Pictured: local resident, Brock Curtis stands beside the historical vehicle.
Special thanks from the Mt Morgan Ambulance Station: Mount Morgan Ambulance Station would like to sincerely thank all who attended and helped us celebrate our 100th Anniversary celebrations and enjoy our special day. A special thank you to the Mount Morgan Local Ambulance Committee for their support in sponsoring and helping organise the Open Day. Also to the Mount Morgan Historical Museum for generously allowing us to borrow memorabilia to display and commemorate this milestone. Sincere thanks also to all who assisted us with providing information and material for our displays.

6 Local vocalist Jonathon Stock returned home from a trip to Los Angeles last week, and he brings with him some extraordinary souvenirs. The young talent recently spent time in Hollywood, where he competed against hundreds of aspiring singers at the World Championships of Performing Arts. Jonathon took on the world stage in a number of the competition’s vocal categories, and now returns home with a gold medal and a silver medal. “For each category, there are gold, silver and bronze medals awarded, and from here a select few are chosen to go to the finals – which are like a showcase,” Jonathon said on the competition. “I competed in the Pop, Broadway, Contemporary, Original and Open categories. I didn’t make the final showcase, but was blown away when I was presented with a medal in two of the vocal categories.” Adding further to the excitement, it was performances of Jonathon’s very own songs which saw him take out the two top awards; winning gold in the Open Category for a performance of his original “Driving into the Sun” and a silver medal in the Original Category with “Fly Away”. Along with the medallions, Jonathon was also presented with a Senior Industry Award. “The industry awards are given to contestants who the judges believe would be good to work with in the industry,” Jonathon said. “This was also really exciting to receive, especially as the judges were such highly regarded industry professionals.” Summing up his time with the competition, Jonathon said it was a remarkable opportunity. “Overall, the World Championships of Performing Arts was a phenomenal experience!” Jonathon said. “I was able to meet many talented people from the entertainment industry, and I learnt so much about the ‘business’ side of things and myself as an artist. I also made great friends from numerous countries.” He said the championships also provided much food for thought on his future plans as a recording artist. “The championships and boot camps in the lead up truly were a ‘money can’t buy’ experience,” he said. “I have learnt so much and have a clear vision of what I will be doing.” Discussing his future endeavours further, Jonathon said he plans to make a move to Melbourne where he will begin some exciting work in the upcoming months. “I will be collaborating with other artists, gigging and getting a manager. “I will also be working with some great producers and releasing a single at the beginning of next year.”
Jonathon said he would also like to venture further into modeling, after taking part in the casual modeling category as part of the recent competition. Concluding, Jonathon said a big thanks goes to all who supported his overseas venture. “Overall, I would really like to again thank everyone who supported me in my trip to America and with the release of my EP,” Jonathon said. “It has been greatly appreciated.” More on the World Championships of Performing Arts: The 2013 Championships welcomes thousands of competitors, with representatives from over 53 countries taking part. The competition, which is now in its 17th year, is universally cited as the one and only official global event for performers and entertainers, both amateur and professional. Medals are awarded for dancing, singing, acting, modeling, instrumentals, and variety arts in the junior age categories (15 and under) and seniors (ages 16 and over), solos and groups. Christmas came early for a number of local residents last Friday, when they attended an impressive fundraiser hosted by the Mount Morgan Blue Care Auxiliary. More than 90 people headed to the Community Services Hall for the Christmas in July event, which was held in aim of raising funds for Mount Morgan Blue Care. Attendees were treated to a home style Christmas meal as part of the event, as well as games, gifts and even a visit from Santa. Entertainment was also supplied on the day, with Christmas carols performed by local resident Lyn Prior. The day’s chef, Clive Ward also kept things merry with “Memoirs of a Flight Attendant”; an amusing discussion on some of the hilarious and first hand experiences he encountered during his years working as an air steward. The event proved a tremendous success, with a total of over $550 raised on the day. The Blue Care Auxiliary sincerely thanks all who supported the event and helped to make the day so enjoyable. Clem and Glenda celebrate diamond anniversary Congratulations to local residents, Clem and Glenda Bray, who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this week. Clem, 83 and Glenda, 76 were married in Mount Morgan on the 30th of July, 1953. “We used to knock around with the same crowd,” Glenda said on the pair’s early encounters. “We all would go to dances and things like that and after a while we ended up together.” Six decades on, the couple are now celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. The pair marked the momentous occasion with a party last Saturday evening, arranged by their children and grandchildren. They were joined by around 100 friends and family members for the special occasion. Queensland’s premier youth circus FLIPSIDE CIRCUS will be returning to Mount Morgan to do workshops with Mount Morgan State School students from the 28th of July to the 8th of August 2013.
The Flipside Circus trainers are also practising circus artists who tour the world with circus shows. However, it is experiences like teaching that offer some of the highlights of their career.
The circus visited Mount Morgan State School for the first time in November 2012. During their visit, the students were treated to the full circus experience. As part of the school day, the kids got to do juggling, hula hoops, tumbling and even trapeze on Flipside’s very own portable rig.
“The kids really got involved in the workshops and gave it their all when trying new tricks. New friendships were formed as they worked as a team to create their circus show and the community really came together for the performance. I’m very proud to be part of a project that has such a positive impact on the community,” Mozes said.
The workshops ended with the students performing for the Mount Morgan Community. For many of the students, this was their first ever performance experience! Mozes, one of the Flipside Circus Trainers who visited Mount Morgan last year is thrilled to be returning. “I’m really excited that we can continue our work from last year with the students of Mt Morgan. The kids’ energy was amazing and it will be great to see some familiar faces,” Mozes said.
These circus workshops go beyond learning circus skills to give children confidence, friendships and even life skills. The workshop program this year will include all the exciting circus activities from last year plus a focus on how to get the most out of circus training through body warm ups and healthy food choices. Repairs to Mt Morgan Range - update:
Repair works continue at the Mount Morgan Range (Burnett Highway), following significant damage caused during the January flood event.
“Another eight major slips require extensive earthworks and specialist treatment, which is expected to continue for at least three months.”
The Department of Main Roads announced last week that works are progressing well, however that it may still be some time before the road can be reopened.
“Flood recovery works remain our top priority in Central Queensland. We are committed to reopening the Mount Morgan Range as soon as it is safe to do so.”
“The Mount Morgan Range suffered extensive damage during the January 2013 floods with 35 land slips,” a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson announced.
Pictured: repair works taking place at the Mount Morgan Range. Photo supplied.
“Rainfall in recent months has further weakened the road, requiring additional repairs.” “RoadTek currently has heavy earthmoving equipment working on three fronts to stabilise loose rock and soil above the Burnett Highway.” The Department, who had hoped to see the road reopened by early August, announced that works are expected to continue over the upcoming weeks. “Works have progressed significantly since January 2013 with two major slips at the bottom of the range repaired,”
Firefighters to reduce risk at Mount Morgan The Department of Natural Resources & Mines (DNRM), Queensland Fire & Rescue Service (QFRS), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) and Rockhampton Regional Council staff will commence a large scale joint agency hazard reduction burn at Mount Morgan on Saturday 3 August 2013. The agencies intend to burn approximately 100 hectares of vegetation to reduce the fuel load in the local area ahead of the bushfire season. The general areas involved on the Eastern side of town will cover from William St through to the Cemetery, and on the Western side of town will cover Meinberg Gully to Showgrounds Road. The burn will commence at approximately 10:00am and will be coordinated from the Incident Control Centre at Mount Morgan Fire Station. The Central Region Manager of Rural Fire Service Queensland, Brian Smith, advises that the large scale mitigation burn is part of the wildfire management plan for the Mount Morgan area. The operation will be well resourced with over 20 fire fighting appliances from all agencies taking part, and residents can expect to see aircraft operating in support of fire-control operations. Brian Smith reports “the fire services and agencies that protect our communities will use hazard reduction burns as a tool to reduce risk, but it is important that burns are conducted in a highly controlled way and only when conditions are suitable and sufficient resources are available.”
In 2012 the Mount Morgan area saw a significant number of fires occur which were deliberately lit and as each fire poses high risk to the lives and property of local residents and risks to those who respond to fight the fires, these fuel reduction burns are vital for the protection of the community. Residents of Mount Morgan are advised that if wind conditions allow the smoke from the burns to become a problem to them, they should ensure all doors and windows are kept closed until the smoke dissipates. Volunteer Community Educators will be available at the Mount Morgan Fire Station from 9.00 am on the 3rd of August to provide advice to residents if required. Brian Smith would like to thank the community and those coming from outside the community to help, for their support and assistance with this significant operation to make their community safer. The colours maroon and blue were everywhere at Red Frog on Wednesday the 17th of July as all dressed up in the colours of their favourite origin team. Sporting funky hats, pants, shirts and capes, it was wonderful to see everyone getting into the Origin spirit on the day. The children and educators each had their faces painted in their colours of choice. This led to the children checking out their appearance in the mirror and sharing humour with their friends as they laughed over their reflections. It’s exciting to see children reading their favourite picture story book! Providing high quality books for young children has been the purpose of ‘Let’s Read’ since it commenced in Mount Morgan and Rockhampton six years ago. The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and The Smith Family partnered in 2005 to implement ‘Let’s Read’ with communities across Australia. Many families in Mount Morgan have received the brightly coloured ‘Let’s Read’ book bags, which provide age-appropriate books, parent information and a DVD. The ‘Let’s Read’ project is funded by the Queensland Government, Office for Early Childhood Education and Care. Your child may be due for their next book bag. Check with the person who gave you the previous one. We want to celebrate our sixth Anniversary in two ways. Firstly – a Photo Competition. We all love reading to young children, so here’s your opportunity to take a few photos of family members reading to the little ones, then enter them in the competition. This Photo Competition is not about the technical excellence of your photography, it’s about the ‘story’ your photo tells. Advertisements for this Photo Competition will appear in the next edition of the ‘Argus’, and there will be flyers distributed around town. Secondly – come along to the ‘Let’s Read’ Party at the Mount Morgan Library on Thursday 5 September from 9:30 to 11:30.

The 2013 Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge
By local resident, Chris O’Leary. On Saturday morning, the 13th of July 2013, over 2000 people, in teams of 4, started out on the 2013 Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge hoping to reach the finish line. One of those teams, no. 218, consisted of my daughter, and former Mount Morgan local, Kerry Evans (O’Leary) and 3 of her equally mad running friends – Bruce Hardy, Steve Jeisman and Peter Hogg. They started out at 7am from Mudgereeba and were to finish at Nerang over a very tough course. They were hoping to finish in a time of round 24 hours. Steve and Peter completed the journey in 25 and a half hours. Unfortunately Kerry and Bruce had to retire after 22 hours and 84kms because of injury and many, many blisters. Kerry, being so dedicated to her sport, was extremely disappointed that she didn’t finish but is thinking of trying it again next year so she can complete the full distance. Team 218 (Together at the End) could not have done the distance at all without their wonderful support team consisting of Kerry’s husband Mark and her son Rhys and the wives of 2 of her running mates. The support team was there to provide food, drinks, bandages and band aids at the various check points (14 in all). The story behind the challange: (taken from kokodachallenge.com/kokoda-challenge) The Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast is hailed as Australia’s toughest endurance event. It is a gruelling event run over 96km in the Gold Coast hinterland. It is a 4 person team event with a completion time of 39 hours. There is a reason behind the time and distance. 96Km is the actual length of the Kokoda Track in New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian troops to set foot on the Track. The team of 4 (with their support crew) trek a 96km course that leads along fire trails, crosses 12 creeks and summits 5,000m of vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a team of 4 in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942 – mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice. In addition to the physical challenge itself, teams are required to take up the challenge of raising funds for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Support programme. This year the Challenge raised a total of $704,814.00. Kerry started her running a few years ago with 5km events then upping the ante to 10km. She has also competed in one triathlon. She has done one King of the Mountain at Pomona on the Sunshine Coast coming 3rd in her age group.
Last year after months of training she, Peter and Steve competed successfully in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and they have also competed in several half marathons quite successfully. In May this year they competed in a 50km trail run through the bush on the Sunshine Coast and in August they will compete in the Tough Mudder run which is an obstacle course set by the British Special Forces – definitely not for sissies they say. AND THEY CALL IT ALL FUN!!! Pictured above: Bruce Hardy, Steve Jeisman, Peter Hogg and Kerry Evans (O’Leary). Photo: supplied.

Mountain Mick’s Marshmallow Chocolate Pizza
Hope for a Show August 10 A poem by Frank Clark
When I was young the Showgrounds was a race track A time when the only way to go was walk there and back With only a slab hut a shack and tree leaf shade The excitement of the running horses we thought we were made The gum trees were there back in history If only they could talk we would have some stories The old race track now surrounds the Showgrounds Will past excitement return and rebound
Now I can hear people saying “he’s lost it, he’s crazy Marshmallow chocolate pizza…” Well maybe I have but it works. Yes it’s sweet, sticky, gooey and yummy. It’s fun and great for kids’ parties or as a treat on your birthday. I’ve had people say “yuck” and then eat 2 slices and say “yum”. So please enjoy.
What you will need: • 1 pizza base • 1 packet of marshmallows • 50ml cream • 1 block of Caramello chocolate block • A Mars bar • 200g choc bits Method: First, cook the pizza base for 7 minutes. Remove from oven. Now place half of the block of Caramello chocolate in a microwave bowl in the microwave for 90 seconds. Now stir into a thick choc/caramel sauce. Next, spoon onto the partly cooked pizza base and spread across the base evenly. Now place the marshmallows in a pattern and place the squares of Caramello and Mars bar on top of the marshmallows and spread the choc bits about. Now back into the oven for 7 minutes or until the marshmallows start to brown and chocolate is melting. Serve as slices & with a scoop or three of ice cream (as pictured below).
A slasher cut the long grass down to reveal the scenery Now the workmen are making with whipper snipper and mower carpet greenery Have they put coloured lenses in my glasses Because what I see is fresh gum leaves and green grasses Neato workmen are making a real country meeting sight Painted circuit posts dark green and rails pure white The committee have problems to sort out and think through But they will back the workers with praise true blue Neato workers are doing their best to make an attraction Visitors are the ones to make a Show reach its expectation Hope Show day is a pleasant surprise with blue skies We are not the team, the best, but as a team we will try The Question is: Will the Show be great? The Answer is: The numbers through the gate!
Have you heard about the Queensland Plan? The Queensland Plan is a shared 30 year vision for the State. You too can be a part of this development and contribute to the 30 year vision for Queensland! But be quick, contributions close at the end of August!
