Annual Tree Festival sees Christmas Season shine bright There’s definitely something about a beautifully bedecked Christmas tree; dazzling in all its decorations and aglow with twinkling lights. Multiply this by 146, and you get the 2012 Saint Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival. 146 trees made up the spectacular display at this year’s festival; a record number of entries for the annual event. First held in Mount Morgan in 1992, this year’s Festival marked the tenth year in the community – a milestone which was not only marked with a record number of featured trees but also a record crowd number. More than 650 people flocked to the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall for the event, held over two evenings, on December 7th and December 8th. Each tree in the impressive array was decorated and supplied by businesses, schools and education centres, community groups and families from the local area and around the region. Many who supplied trees for the event thought of fun and impressive ways to personalise their entries, creating a tree from scratch or adding personalised decorations to see their entry unique. Along with the glowing display, the heart-warming event also featured an entertaining programme over the two nights. The Friday evening included its yearly favourites of live entertainment, market stalls and student artwork displays which were then further added to on the Saturday evening with carols by candlelight, free rides and slides for the kiddies, and of course, a visit from Santa himself and even Mrs Claus. Additional features were also included in recognition of the event’s tenth anniversary; seeing the debut of a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and impressive Nativity displays from all over the world. The event was organised by the Saint Mary’s Church Mount Morgan, supported by members of the Mount Morgan Uniting Church. The Parish of Saint Mary’s would like to sincerely thank all who supported the event and helped to make it such an enjoyable and successful occasion. The 2012 Saint Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival was kindly sponsored by Rockhampton Regional Council, Ergon Energy, Rock Building Society, Mrs Sandra Howkins, MP Ted Malone, MP Ken O’Dowd, Hugh McGilvray (IGA Mount Morgan). Joy to the World! Many years ago that joy came after quite a lot of hard work before the Christmas dinner reached the table. One of the delights of Christmas dinner is the Ham which nowadays can be purchased at the Butchers or in the shops. Not so in gone by years. The ham was raw and had to be cooked in the copper washing boiler. Cleaning of the copper boiler took lots of energy with steel wool and soap so that the result was a mirror finish. After the ham was cooked, the plum pudding was placed into the re cleaned highly polished boiler. Of course wood was the heating element. Were these the good old days? What a Festival of Christmas Trees for the 10th year. Congratulations to all the hard workers. How do you improve on that for the 11th year? THE Picnic spot of Central Queensland – has to be our Big Dam of course. It looks wonderful but what a responsibility for ALL of us to THINK CLEAN – BE TIDY and keep it in the pristine state it is now. Speak kindly and gently if you see anyone being careless as the bins are there for our rubbish not the surroundings or the waterways. On a very sad note we must mention the passing of Dame Elizabeth Murdoch on 5th December at 103 years of age. Dame Elizabeth was one of the greatest Australian philanthropists of any era and her life was dedicated to helping others. What a Grande Australian Lady. Let us hope some of our multi-millionaire ladies follow in her footsteps. That is it for 2012. Happy Christmas everyone and enjoy the Season. Hopefully we will be back in 2013, with some interesting and historical articles.

When the team at Mount Morgan News heard that Hot FM were in search of new toys to donate to families in need this Christmas, they were eager to lend a helping hand. The local business donated $200 worth of toys from their stock to the “I Believe in Christmas” Appeal; the toy drive helping out families in Central Queensland doing it tough in the holiday season. Hot FM’s Mon Le-Feuvre headed to the Mount in the “Hot Thunder” last Tuesday and left with a range of goodies from Mount Morgan News that are sure to help brighten Christmas day for many this year. The local contribution made up the total 589 gifts (donated from around CQ), which will be given to the Salvation Army, to be passed on to families throughout the region over the next week.
The appeal is driven by Hot FM, in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Pictured is Mount Morgan News team member, Georgia Page with Mon and the Hot Thunder, Hot FM.

Last Monday saw a number of local young ladies take part in a special graduation dinner, held in celebration of their completion of a recent program at Mount Morgan Central during Semester 2. The local students took part in the nine week program known as ShineGIRL; a popular personal development and mentoring program. 34 year 6 and 7 students took part in the program, which focused on different personal aspects under the banners of worth, strength and purpose. Through the program, the young ladies reflected on their own personal abilities and potential. Along with the personal development discussions, the girls also learnt about selfcare and cleanliness; including skin care and appropriate makeup techniques, as well as hair care. The end of the program saw the local students treated to a makeup and hair day, where they were able to practise what they had learnt. This was held in week two of this term. The local students celebrated the completion of their course with a special high tea held at the Footbridge Corner last week.
The students were joined by members of their family and school staff members for the special occasion. The program was facilitated by Krystal Beazley from Centacare Rockhampton, and coordinated by School Chaplain – Kristy Baxter and School Guidance OfficerLarissa Dunn, with the assistance of teachers- Mrs Williams and Miss Egerton. Mount Morgan Central State Primary School has won the 2012 Queensland Super Site Award for excellence in delivering fun, safe and inclusive sports activities to children. Each year the award is presented to the top school delivering the Australian Government’s Active Afterschool Communities (AASC) program in Queensland. Competing against 28 nominees also recognised for excellence, Mount Morgan Central was announced the winner earlier this month; receiving a Super Site Trophy as well as a $500 voucher for sporting equipment. The school was presented the award at a special parade held on Wednesday, December 5th, presented by Regional Coordinator- Capricorn Coast for Active Afterschool Communities – Mr Brett Parker. Discussing the award and Mount Morgan’s achievements, Mr Parker said: “Each year we acknowledge schools and coaches within our region who excel in delivering the program through engaging students, delivering a quality positive coaching experience and promoting pathways to community sport. “The top performers are then recognised through the State Awards, known as the Qld Super Site Award and the Qld 5 Star Coach Award.” Mr Parker said Mount Morgan’s nomination was a result of their holistic approach in encouraging sport and a transition project which they trialled with Rockhampton basketball.
The trial saw two local basketball teams developed during the year, following the commencement of basketball as an after school sports activity at Mount Morgan Central. This was later developed into two coached teams: an under 14’s and an under 12’s, as part of the Toledo All Stars Basketball Club. Mr Parker said the local development proved an impressive debut for both local teams. “Although it was the first season playing for many, both teams made a terrific debut, with the Under 12’s even making Minor Premiers in the Rockhampton competition.” He said. “I think I can safely say the entire idea, partnership and result was a win all round for everyone.” Pictured below: Front Row (L-R): Lachlan Buckton, Lachlan Mackay, Ciele Holohan, Davin Plummer, Tyler Toby, Zaire Hughes, Keanna Martin, Janaya Bray, Shellby Evans. The project would serve the community well and will greatly improve the facilities for locals and tourists alike and keep pace with the region’s growing population and has strong community support. The funding will start to flow immediately so councils can get on with the job of delivering for their communities. Bushfire Season This is now the time of year we need to be ‘bushfire prepared’ as high rainfall in summer generates vegetation to fuel spring bushfires. Each year the Qld Fire & Rescue Service identifies areas where the level of vegetation or fuel poses a possible bushfire risk and then local fire fighters and other agencies perform controlled burns to lower the risk. Fire fighters need Queenslanders to do their part by preparing their families and their properties and know what their Bushfire Survival Plan is. Every household should download and complete a Prepare.Act.Survive Bushfire Survival Plan. For more details visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or www. fire.qld.gov.au or call 1300 369 003 Christmas Wishes As this will be the final Community News article for 2012, I would like to extend my best wishes to all for a happy holiday season. As we enjoy the festivities, it is vitally important that we do not become complacent about the very things that can change this happy and carefree time into one of tragedy and heartbreak. Our children are the most precious people in our lives and we must be especially vigilant as they enjoy the sun, surf and other summer activities and ensure they swim between the flags at the beach, wear their helmet when riding the new bicycle and keep a watchful eye on them at all times in the swimming pool. It is also our duty to take extra care on the roads and highways during this traditionally busy time, and as community minded citizens we must be ‘cyclone-ready’ by clearing away all items from around the house that could easily become missiles, and ensuring we have all the necessary items in our survival kits. It is a time we all enjoy sharing with our family and friends and I trust that it will be a safe and enjoyable time for all. I look forward to seeing you all again as I move around the electorate in 2013….

People in Profile: Murray Hare

By Heather Quarry Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their marvellous support over the year with the People in Profile column and truly wish you all a safe, happy Christmas and New Year. What better way to finish off the year than with a story from a local who has helped keep the town beautiful for many years.
“A lot of money and hard work has gone into this scheme and it looks a million dollars. You’ve got to have shelter sheds where there are barbecues for protection from rain and sunlight. It’s all free here so therefore cleaning it up ready for the next person makes it viable. The entire dam area now is a lovely place to visit”.
Murray John Hare was born in the Mount Morgan Hospital (the one that has recently been replaced) on the 4th of July 1963.
When asked about other areas of the town he’d like to see changed Murray says he’d like to see the Neighbourhood Watch program again become strong in the Mount and also would like the Struck Oil Hall to be utilised more than it has been for a long time.
He attended both Mount Morgan Primary School and Secondary School, going through to year eleven.“School wasn’t much for me so I decided to get a job. English and math were reasonable. I liked the biology side of study and some of the science stuff. Anybody that knows me knows the truth when I say I was woeful at sport, absolutely atrocious. I started cross country walks of a Wednesday afternoon. This part of the sporting program was introduced to help children find an interest they’d enjoy. I was on top of the list when it came to not liking sport” he laughs. “My children love fishing and swimming but I don’t do those either. I can swim though.” Thirty two years ago Murray started working for the then Mount Morgan Shire Council and had been employed by them until it became the Rockhampton Regional Council which is the banner he now is working under. He has a degree in Horticulture and only failed one out of eighteen subjects. “I can’t draw a straight line and received Honours for all subjects except for Landscape Design. Needless to say, I still can’t draw.” Currently fitting in work, family and an Advanced Diploma of Horticulture through University keeps Murray extremely busy combining all the things he enjoys most in life. The course was meant to be a sixteen subject course but was transferred to thirty two subjects when the Universities were changed. There are three subjects to go but he feels confident he will pass them as he has passed all subjects so far. “I have done school for more years since I left school than I ever did” he jokes. Murray married a local girl, Diane Timms, the daughter of well known One Man Music Band musician Len Timms and his wife. Married on the 10th of October 1987. Diane wore a white lace taffeta wedding gown and the bridesmaids wore blue. Murray thinks the men wore grey suits. “That was a long time ago you know. I’ll probably get in trouble for this. I know I wore a shirt but I can’t remember what colour it was” he laughs as he tries to remember. They have two children, Jessica, 21 and Nathanial, 19. Diane leased the nursery for around ten years which she traded out of about two and a half years ago. The nursery was originally built as a mango farm, initiated by Bill Richie but after learning what it takes to make a mango farm viable the mixed plant ratio was introduced which serviced the town and outlying areas with plants for many years. The nursery area has now become a park with play equipment that boosts the activities for children in the region. Murray is very proud of what council have achieved with this project. “A few months ago I was a bit sceptical but now I think it is wonderful so PLEASE don’t destroy it.” he says with a passion for the end result.
“I used to be involved in kids planting up Morgan Street a few years ago. All the school from preschool to grade 7 joined in close to end of year. They planted literally thousands of plants and they were left alone where, if we planted them they wouldn’t have lasted as long. The majority of kids in the town are good kids and giving them things to do gives them an incentive. Making the town family friendly helps locals and tourists alike.” Murray believes projects like this should be tried in all towns. “I am hopelessly addicted to plants. Putting me in a nursery is worse than putting an alcoholic in a pub. I have to stay away from nurseries. Di puts her foot down. Kids get the money off me to get plants now so I don’t buy too many.”
He also loves native birds especially the rainbow lorikeet. “They should be out flying free not in cages. My wife will probably kill me for that comment because she loves her birds” he says with a cheeky grin. Asking Murray what some of his stranger likes or dislikes have been over time he thinks about it before finally making comment. “I don’t drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes (or any other drugs). I enjoy drinking Pepsi and Ice break drinks. I can drink Ice break by the gallons which isn’t good for me I know. I have a pink Ipod to play my music so that nobody else will take it (looking at his children). Also, I learned not to go fishing when a daughter is skimming stones because the dad ends up with his head split open.” There is much more to Murray’s life that will hopefully be covered in later editions of People in Profile.

In memory of Reid Reid (Reidy) 1938 - 2012
A Country Boy at heart, Reid was at his most content when working in the bush. He left school at an early age to work on the land, working on properties, driving bulldozers and scrub-pulling from Theodore to Clermont. Reid’s love of the bush started while he was young, often skipping school to work at the local sawmill. Reid also led a very colorful life in his teens and early twenties, they were packed full of escapades, antics and pranks, truly living life to the fullest.

Reid married Joy Truss in February 1960 and worked a farm in Wowan (mainly pigs and dairy) until he moved to Mt Morgan in 1968 where he worked as a rigger in the Mt Morgan Mine. Reid and Joy had 4 children- Gavin, Jeffrey, Leanne and Gary. In 1976 Reid and family moved to Dysart to live where Reid started work at Saraji Mine as a tradesman’s assistance in the electrical department. He remained there until he retired and returned to Mt Morgan in 1998. During Reid and Joy’s time in Dysart they started to refurbish the house in Mt Morgan ready for retirement, but sadly in 1995, Joy passed away. As mentioned earlier, Reid was a country boy through and through and he was the happiest when he would go down to the farm in Wowan on the weekends and help Joy’s mother out with the fencing, dipping, branding or just moving the cattle around between the paddocks. Reid never did leave the country, it was always in his bloodeven in the days he was in Dysart he would be going over to Springsure to Lenny and Dawn Reed’s property to help out, or down to the Mackenzie River to Harley and Jenny’s property. Some times Peter Craig (Reid’s brother in-law) would grab Reid for a trip around the local area to pick up or drop off some farming equipment. Reid also had a love for the water and with a few of his mates would make some well timed trips for some fishing or crabbing. Reid possessed those qualities that many hold dear but very few possess: he was a fiercely loyal man, hardworking, and sincere, described by his friends as a “rough diamond”. Reid’s sense of adventure and sense of humour made many happy memories for many people, and some gray hairs for others. None who knew Reid will be able to reflect on the man and his life without smiling to themselves. Tribute supplied by the Reid Family. If you have a tribute for a loved one and would like to see it included in a future Argus, please contact: mmpad@bigpond.com / 4938 2333.

April
Mount Morgan and the famous Fire Clay Caverns were featured in a National Documentary series (The Land Down Under) during the month of April; highlighting the impressive paleontological evidence in Episode 3 (pictured left is one of the dinosaur footprints found in the Fire Clay Caverns). This month also saw the Regional Council Candidates Forum take place, along with a number of local celebrations and fundraisers: including Neighbour Day and Cuppa for a Cause.
May
The 2012 May Day Weekend certainly proved a momentous occasion; dubbed one of the most successful seen in years. Held in the first weekend of the month, the local celebrations included a Meet and Greet held at the Railway Museum on the Thursday evening, followed by Saturday’s festivities (pictured left), Sunday’s Rodeo (pictured centre, photo by Mick Joicey) and a family day at the Mount Morgan Dam on the Monday. The event also coincided with two major milestones for the area; seeing the official celebrations of Mount Morgan High’s 100th birthday and the 125th anniversary for Mount Morgan Central (pictured right).

June
July
The month of June proved exciting for the staff of the Mount Morgan Hospital (left); who received a national award in the 2012 GSK Childhood Immunisation Awards for their outstanding contribution to improving childhood immunisation programs. July also saw the stage play “Tales of the Underground” hit the stage at the School of Arts - featuring a performance set in Mt Morgan. The second This is Your Night also occurred in this month - awarded to Brian Glover (right).

July also included NAIDOC Day Celebrations and the launch of the B-4 Learner Program at Mt Morgan Central.
August
The month of August saw another favourite event on the local calendar; the Mount Morgan Agricultural Show (pictured left and centre). August also included the Mayor’s Morning Tea- held at the School of Arts in recognition of Seniors’ Week 2012. The month also saw members of the “Truckin’ Life” Magazine head to the Mount, interviewing local resident, Ken Reid about his days working with trucks at the Mount Morgan Mine (Ken pictured right with Bruce Honeywill).
September
October

This month also saw local residents, Deb and Rod Day, Kate and Brian Moore and Bill and Dulcie Stacey take out impressive wins in the 2012 Bettascapes Gardening Competition.
Proving another month for celebration, October saw the Dee Bowls celebrate its 60th birthday and the Mt Morgan Arts and Craft with 25 years. This month also saw an impressive inclusion made to the Museum- the Business Leaders Award, for the late William Knox D’Arcy (pictured above).
November
December
November was an exciting month for Mount Morgan High, holding the 2012 Senior Formal, Variety Night and the School Awards Night. This month also saw trainers from FlipSide Circus come to town, as well as Remembrance Day Services and the return of ANZAC Park’s WWI Field Guns, following a restoration project of the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch (pictured right).
Along with the Christmas Tree Festival (pictured) and Mount Morgan Central Awards featured in this issue, December has also seen progression on a music album entirely about Mt Morgan (by local resident Richard Grist).

Mountain Mick’s Boxing Day Fritters © Mick Blake 1997 re-hashed 2012 Baree Ok, you had a great party on Christmas Day and now it’s the day after; all the presents are unwrapped and there are lots of left overs. What to do with all of these? Perhaps these Boxing Day Fritters... Before this though, let us reflect on where Boxing Day gets its name (and no it’s not called Boxing Day because family member’s get outside for a boxing match…) The history of Boxing Day is said to go way back to the start of Christian Churches, and maybe from the Romans. It was day of sharing leftovers with the less fortunate. It’s said that in these days of old, rich families and landowners would take their leftovers and place them in metal boxes placed outside of Churches- so they could be shared out to the severance and the poor peasants for the Feast day of Saint Stephen. In our modern days however we like to add and change the origin of days to suit our own ideas and TV marketing. This is where this recipe comes in- it’s the tasty way of sharing the Christmas Day leftovers. It’s one which makes the biggest use of your leftovers and is sure to see everyone have a happy and relaxed Boxing Day. It makes a quick, easy breakfast on Boxing Day and helps with the odd hangover by using leftovers.

For the Fritter Batter: 2 cups of sifted self-raising flour 2 cups milk (Skim if you like) 3 eggs Plus: 2 cups diced Christmas ham 2 cups diced Christmas roast turkey/chicken 1 cup diced tomato 1 cup finely diced onion 1 Tblsp dried parsley 1 Tblsp chicken stock powder 1 ½ teasp garlic salt ½ teasp black pepper P.S: you can add cooked peeled prawns instead of turkey or ham or add 1 cup of prawns; but if adding prawnsmake sure you eat the lot okay. Method: Firstly, sift your flour and add your beaten eggs and milk. Mix well into a lovely fritter batter. Now wait, the next part is really hard… Yes just tip the lot into the batter and mix well- cover all the ham, turkey etc. with the batter. Now fry the fritters in olive oil (don’t make them too thick- about 12mm that ½ inch in the old book). Fry on first side until bubble holes appear on the top side, now flip and fry for about 5 minutes more. Then serve with some cherry tomatoes and mango chutney, parsley and tomato sauce. Hope you enjoy your Feast Day of Stephen (or “Boxing Day” to us commoners). Merry Christmas, see ya all in 2013. Mountain Mick
