Mount Morgan’s 2013 School Leaders As the old saying goes, “the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow”...

Though for a number of local students, leadership isn’t simply something for the future.

With the new education year underway, Mount Morgan State High and Mount Morgan State Primary have welcomed their new school leaders.

Mount Morgan High announced the senior leaders of 2013 with a ceremony held earlier this month; congratulating the 2013 School Captains, Vice Captains, Council Secretary, Leaders and House Captains, along with the Year 10 Learners to Leaders ambassadors.

For Mount Morgan Primary, last Tuesday saw the official announcement and induction of the school’s Captains, Vice Captains, Councillors, House Captains and Leaders.

Well the deluge of rain that we recently experienced certainly wrecked our Dee River with wash outs in so many areas and causing some rather scenic waterfalls.

Other results are more frightening with many wooden pylons of the old East Street Bridge (known as the Happy Valley Bridge) and the original wooden pylons of the original Central Street Bridge being exposed.

Even great amount of erosion shows much more of the cement pylons of our present Carmody Bridge.

The Carmody Bridge was opened in 1968 and was named after James Griffin Carmody who was Chairman of Mount Morgan Shire Council from May 1947 till April 1970 making him the longest serving Mayor of the Shire. The estimated cost of the Bridge was $112000 and for some reason or other the Bridge was never officially opened. If repairs are now warranted the cost will possibly exceed the cost of the Bridge in the sixties.

There have been many disasters from the extreme rainfall including our own historic scenic Range Road.

Here’s hoping it will soon be operational as the alternative Razorback highway is very difficult for heavy vehicles and for tourists towing caravans. Originally, in 1937 the Range road was constructed manually by pick and shovel so with today’s machinery it should be a much easier task. We do need our Range Road.

Another important event this year is the Centenary of the Ambulance service. In 1913 the first local centre of the Q.A.T.B. commenced operations in a building in East Street near the Happy Valley Bridge. No doubt we will hear more of this Centenary during the year.

No doubt many older residents will remember the wooden Happy Valley Bridge (East Street) but history research is very limited about it. It was a very important traffic Bridge in early days as East Street was the hub of the town. If you have any knowledge of this Bridge please bring it into MMPAD. It would be appreciated. We remember it was closed to traffic for many years but a side area was for pedestrian use only. Another memory recalls the American Service men on R and R in Mount Morgan during the last war sometimes shifted the barricade and drove their jeeps across it for easy access to the Criterion Hotel.

For Mount Morgan High, February is a momentous month; marking the anniversary of the school’s establishment (February 1912), along with the official induction of the year’s new school leaders.

Mount Morgan State High announced the 2013 Senior Leaders with an official ceremony held earlier this month, on Friday February 15th.

Students and staff were joined by family and members of the community for the official ceremony, which was carried out by the school’s senior students.

The morning announced the 2013 School Captains, Council Secretary, House Captains and Leaders, as previously voted by peers and staff at the school’s election.

The senior leaders proudly accepted their new roles by reading the School Leaders’ Oath. An official presentation of badges was also conducted for the School Leaders, presented by Principal of Mount Morgan High, Paul Nicholson.

Mount Morgan High’s 2013 Leaders are: School Captains: Lydia Howe and Jayden Cowl School Vice Captains: Emma Benjamin and Brendan Parry, School Representative Council Secretary: April Rudolph Kendall House Captains: Celine Lennox and Brendan Parry Paterson House Captains: Emma Benjamin and Jayden Cowl Gordon House Captains: Paul Lodewikus and Curtly Toby School Leaders: Phivie Bird and Jason Wanstall.

Along with the official induction of the senior leaders, the morning also included the Learners to Leaders Ceremony, which saw the induction of eight year 10 students as ambassadors of the Learners to Leaders Program (a program designed to, among other things, encourage and embrace community spirit and future employment opportunities).

The Year 10 Learners to Leaders Ambassadors are: Lachlan Cox, William Holden, Tyler Jones, Ian Leggo, Matthew Lodewikus, Amelia Parry, Isobella Rudolph and Natasha Wyvill.

The ceremony concluded with the cutting of the school cake, in celebration of Mount Morgan High’s 101st birthday.

Congratulations to the school leaders and senior class of 2013.

Mount Morgan Central’s student leaders for 2013 were inducted into their new roles at a special ceremony held last Tuesday, February 19.

Always a highlight in the school calendar, the event was attended by students, staff, family, community members and special guests.

The morning announced the 2013 School Leaders, with students proudly reading pledges and accepting their new badges before attendees.

School Captain, Vice Captain and Councillor Badges were presented by RRC Councillors, Cherie Rutherford and Ellen Smith.

Sports Captain Badges were presented by Railway Hotel licensee, Di Brown - in recognition of the continuous support provided by the local business toward the Mount Morgan Primary School Sport.

Student Leader Badges were also presented to each of the 2013 Year 7 Students, presented by Mount Morgan Central P&C President, Kerri Ward.

Mount Morgan Range closure - update

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have announced plans to see the Mount Morgan Range reopened to traffic in the future, however it may be some months before this occurs.

Work continues on the site following extensive damage during last month’s severe weather.

A Main Roads spokesperson announced last week that geotechnical experts remain onsite to assess the conditions and establish how to repair this section of the Burnett Highway.

“The Mount Morgan Range suffered extensive damage during the recent flood event. There are a total of 35 slips to varying degrees. 20 of these are on the road and 15 of the slips are in the cuttings above the road.

The Department reported that more than three weeks after the flooding event, there are some areas where the earth cracks continue to widen.

“Engineers are focussing their initial efforts at these locations to prevent more slips from occurring.

“While some of the slips from above the highway have been cleared, access remains difficult and dangerous. At locations where sections of the highway have given way, we have to work from below the slip and reconstruct our way up.

“Safety is our number one priority both for motorists and for our people working on the range.”

While the Department have announced their intentions to see the Range reopened to traffic, they have stated that it will be some time before this takes place.

“TMR is working to reconstruct the range as quickly and efficiently as possible. It is expected to take at least six months before it is reopened to traffic.

In the meantime the Razorback Road remains open to traffic travelling between Mount Morgan and Rockhampton.

The Department urges motorists using the Razorback Road to remain vigilant, drive to the conditions and obey all road signage to ensure their own safety as well as that of other road users and road workers.

Mt Morgan residents Stumpy and Kimm celebrated their love with a formal Wedding ceremony at their Coronation Drive home on Friday 15th February 2013.

They would like to share their wonderful news with the local community.

The service was conducted by marriage celebrant, Diane Miltenburg.

The couple exchanged their vows and celebrated their love before a select but close group of family and friends.

Congratulations Stumpy, Kimm and immediate family on your successful day and beautiful expressions of love for one another.

Stumpy and his groomsmen proudly arrived at the venue on classic motor bikes and waited patiently for the bride to make her appearance. The wedding party was dressed in royal purple and black.

Attendees enjoyed a romantic BBQ lunch after the ceremony and moved down to the Golden Nugget Hotel for an informal reception of beer, music, pool and pokies.

As Kimm walked through the garden to be by Stumpy’s side in matrimony, her beautiful white gown shimmered.

Small flowers stitched around the skirts fluttered like white butterflies before her feet. The clouds parted momentarily to shine a ray of sunlight on the bride like a blessing from heaven.

The event was filled with love and adoration for one another. Voices quavered and tears welled as words of endearment were spoken and rings were placed lovingly onto each other’s fingers.

Members of the Mount Morgan community added another definition to the term “going red” last Saturday; adding a splash of scarlet to their outfits in support of the Mount Morgan QCWA’s Red Dress for Heart fundraiser.

The Mount Morgan QCWA committee hosted the annual event on Saturday February 23, in aim of raising both awareness of cardiovascular disease and funds for the Australian Heart Foundation.

The morning included a presentation from local resident and registered nurse, Noelene Crone; who discussed cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and the importance of risk factor awareness and available services and treatment.

For some light hearted fun, a competition was also held on the morning for the best red outfit – awarded to local resident, Val Davies.

The morning also treated attendees to games, raffles and an impressive morning tea.

The annual event proved another success for the local QCWA Committee, with a total of $260 raised on the day.

The morning’s proceeds will now be donated to the Australian Heart Foundation, in aim of assisting continued work in cardiovascular disease research, education and support services.

Last week saw Rotarians around the globe celebrate the 108th birthday of Rotary.

Among those to mark the milestone were members of the Mount Morgan club, who enjoyed a birthday cake at their weekly meet in celebration last Thursday.

In recognition of the occasion, this issue of the Argus takes a look at the much loved association and some of its successes both internationally and in our very own neighbourhood.

Rotary International: It all began in February of 1905 when Paul Harris, a lawyer in Chicago, decided to hold a meeting. It’s said that Mr Harris called together three of his friends, with hope of forming a professional club with the same welcoming spirit he had enjoyed in the small towns of his youth.

Its early years saw Bert Zagami as the first club president, who at the time was also the Principal of The Mount Morgan State School. Today, President of the Club is Anne Dwyer.

Long term resident, Mr Abbie Rowe is the remaining Charter club member today; a member in its establishment in 56, and proudly a member to this day.

The Mount Morgan Rotary Club meets at the Leichhardt Hotel, Mount Morgan on Thursday nights at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. For further details on the local club and how you too can become involved, please contact Del Rowley on: 0418 186 124.

The Club was soon formed; with meetings rotating among members’ offices. It’s said that this ‘rotating’ also saw the formation of the term ‘Rotary’.

It wasn’t long before the club’s popularity grew; resulting in numerous clubs chartered around America and by the 1920s, in six continents.

Today, over 100 years on, Rotary is an International association involving 200 countries, 33,000 clubs and over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.

Rotary in Mount Morgan: For Mount Morgan, the official charter of the club took place in December of 1956.

Since its establishment, Rotary in Mount Morgan has been involved in many community services; supporting Mount Morgan State High School with bursaries, sponsoring students to attend Science schools and Youth Leadership camps, hosting Group Study Exchange – just to name a few.

Over the years the club’s reach has stretched to other countries also; becoming involved in International service with members volunteering overseas. The local club has also supported international health issues such as Polio Plus and Rotarians against Malaria- two areas Rotary has been proud to make a difference.

To start off our new Kindergarten early learning curriculum we have implemented a program featuring emergency services.

We discussed various services that are used to help people. The children decided they wanted to learn more about the fire trucks.

They designed a fire station in home corner with large lego pieces and extinguishers out of drink bottles and tubing. After great discussion we decided to have an excursion to the local IGA to recycle boxes making fire engines.

They created their own fire engines using paint and pieces out of the boxes - such as the trays in the bottom as lights. Some children were really creative- creating windows, doors, lights, wheels and steering wheels using various materials, some even putting 000 on the front so they would know who to call.

As the journey has unravelled, the children have roleplayed various incidents. Some of these roleplays included someone choking, calling an ambulance, the creation of a mock house fire- so the children could be fire fighters and save people (all the while discussing how a house could catch fire), and even broken arms and discussion on how breaks can occur.

News from the Red Frog Wednesday (February 13) marked a special day at Red Frog; it was Jarome’s 2nd birthday.

To help us celebrate, Jarome’s Grandmas and Mum came in for morning tea. After everyone was done, they brought out a yummy ice cream cake to share.

Jarome, who is of Torres Strait Island descent, was also treated to some traditional Torres Strait Islander celebrations as part of his party.

Leading up to Jarome’s birthday, we learnt that in the Torres Strait Islander culture when a child turns two they have a big celebration, which includes a hungi, dancing and singing. As well as this, the child who is turning two has their hair cut for the first time.

Sadly we were unable to have the dancers visit on the day, but Jarome’s Abbey (Grandma) Mojina Dow was able to come and teach us some traditional songs. All the children happily got involved in the songs and joined in with musical instruments and mirrored Mojina’s hand actions.

We were very lucky to have had the opportunity to have learnt about some of the Torres Strait Islander culture and would like to thank everyone involved and say a big thanks to Sally, Narelle and Mojina.

...From your State MP Over the last few weeks we have found ourselves yet again cleaning up after floods that were beyond any rational expectations. Our thoughts are with those who have suffered unimaginable losses.

In my travels to these areas over the last few weeks, the devastation I have witnessed is vast, but what is more astounding is the spirit of the people in these communities, getting on with the job with the help of strangers coming from all over to lend a hand is absolutely tremendous and I commend each and every one of you for your true Aussie generosity.

There is an enormous challenge in front of us to rebuild, but I can assure you the State Government is working to ensure those affected by this latest weather disaster are supported – today, tomorrow and in the weeks and months to come.

2013 Flood Assistance The Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme – Grants are now available to support those families in certain regions, experiencing personal hardship due to the extreme weather. A grant of up to $180 per person, up to a maximum of $900 for a family of five or more, is available to cover unexpected basic costs of essential items, such as food.

Essential Household Contents Grants, Structural Assistance Grants and Essential Services Safety Reconnection Scheme Grants would also be available for individuals and families affected.

For those owners who are uninsured, or unable to claim insurance, you may also be eligible to Essential Services Safety Reconnection Scheme Grants to help you reconnect essential services that were damaged by the disaster.

Hello to all Division 4 residents and also Division 5.

You are all part of the great region of Mount Morgan, and you are lucky enough to have 2 councillors looking after you, myself and Cr. Cherie Rutherford.

Well, we certainly had a wet start to the new year. I have spent a lot of time in the Stanwell and Bajool areas trying to help people who have been overcome by the flooding.

Some people have lost everything but have retained the most important thing, their lives. I really felt for you Mt. Morgan and district residents who lost your power and phones for several days. The loss of two vital communication links at the same time is just not good enough, and must be addressed so it doesn’t happen again.

To make matters worse, all roads to Mount Morgan were cut as well, so it was a trying time for all. Rest assured our worry was also shared by the Mayor, who visited Bajool briefly on the Monday for an emergency meeting, and then went to Mount Morgan to see how you were going.

As the wet weather will be with us for some months to come, it is a timely reminder about flooded creeks and gullies. They come up swiftly, so if you’re unsure, don’t risk it, its not worth it. Besides the risk to yourself and your family, someone else has to risk their life to save you. In fast flowing water, the depth guages are usually washed away so you have no way of knowing how deep the fast flowing water is.

Summer Quiche © Mountain Mick Blake the Mountain Griller The days are long and hot this time of year and our minds wander off to simpler days; fun filled picnics at the “Big Dam”, cold Apple Cider and my lovely Summer Quiche... which I also call “My Bacon, Shallots & Double Cheese Quiche”, but Summer Quiche is what day dreams are made of - light fluffy short crust pastry and a baked cheesy bacon filling that would float on clouds held up by angles wings. So please enjoy this summer delight, as these are the lazy hazy days of summer.

Ingredients: • 2 tsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 200g bacon, in short, thin strips • 100g Spring onion shallots • 4 eggs • 1 clove of crushed garlic • A pinch of salt • A good pinch of black or white pepper • ¾ cup (185ml) cream • ½ cup (125ml) milk • ½ cup Mozzarella cheese • ⅓ cup (30g) shredded Parmesan Ingredients - pastry • 2 cups (300g) plain flour • 150g butter, chilled, cubed • Pinch salt • 1 egg • 1-2 tbs cold water Method: 1. For pastry, mix flour, butter and salt in a food processor until mixture forms crumbs. Process with egg and 1-2 tbs cold water. Knead until smooth. Refrigerate covered for 10 minutes.

2. Roll pastry out between 2 sheets of lightly floured nonstick baking paper and place in 25cm (base), 3cm deep fluted loose-bottomed flan. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add onion, crushed Garlic and bacon plus season with salt & pepper.

Cook 8-10 minutes or until soft. Drain on a paper towel. .

4. Preheat oven to 190°C. Place a tray in the oven. Line pastry with baking paper. Cover base with rice. Blind bake on the hot tray for 20 minutes. Remove paper and rice. Spread over shallots, bacon, Mozzarella cheese and onion. Whisk eggs, cream and milk together. Pour over the filling. Sprinkle over the Parmesan. Bake 45 minutes and serve with Summer salad.

I would serve a ice cold apple juice or a Chai Tea with this summer feast.

I first learned about internet ‘trolls’ through his book anonymous people who pick a fight for the enjoyment of making another person angry. (Google the SBS Insight show “Trolls” for a transcript and video, to learn about ‘trolls’).

I especially appreciate Greg’s explanations of why blog owners, Twitter and Facebook users should take responsibility to moderate comments and to block users that are aggressive and a nuisance.

Greg has managed to write a clear snapshot of the current disorganised mess that is the world of Australian Politics online, while acknowledging the positive outcomes that have been and can be produced in a place of instant communication between the Australian public.
