We recently read this interesting article of how the Last Post originated and why it is played at Military funerals. With the celebrations of ANZAC being prominent in our thoughts and the playing of “the Last Post”, we wish to share this legend with you. Most of us do shed a tear when the Last Post is played or get a lump in our throat. The legend goes that during the American Civil War one evening in 1862, a Union Army Captain, Robert Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on a nearby battlefield. Not knowing if the soldier was a Union or Confederate soldier he risked his own life to go to the stricken soldier and bring him back for medical treatment. When he reached his own line of safety he discovered the soldier had died and that he was a Confederate soldier. When by a very dim lantern light the Union Captain could see he went cold and numb as he recognised the Confederate soldier was his own son. His son had been in the South studying music and had not informed his Dad that he had joined the Confederate Army. The Union Captain requested that his son receive a full Military funeral with an Army Band despite his enemy status as a Confederate soldier. His request was partly granted due to the respect he was held in. He was granted one musician only and the Father chose a Bugler. From his dead son’s uniform pocket he found a piece of paper with a series of musical notes written on it. So the haunting melody we know as The Last Post that is used at Military funerals was born that day. Here are the words of The Last Post as perhaps many would not be familiar with them.

3 If there is one thing that the recent natural disasters has highlighted, it is the invaluable efforts of our emergency service crews. Putting their lives on hold and volunteering countless hours to assist those in need, these devoted men and women are there to heed our calls for help all year, every year. For a number of local SES volunteers, these selfless efforts have earned them an esteemed medal; presented last week in recognition of their assistance during the 2010/2011 floods and Cyclone Yasi. 55 members of the Rockhampton Regional Council SES Unit were honoured with the prestigious National Emergency Service Medal during a special presentation hosted by the Rockhampton Regional Council last Monday. Among the proud recipients were local volunteers Darren Barnicoat, David Sealy, Melissa Sealy, Lyn Porter, Graham Roberts, Colleen Roberts, Allan Law, Jason Moran, Debbie Keepkie and Alan Todd. The medals, which were presented by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Williams, honoured the extraordinary efforts made by the SES volunteers who went well beyond their duties during the 2010/2011 Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi. For the local crew, duties during this time included providing assistance locally, regionally and further north. “Locally, our efforts during this time included a lot of sandbagging and providing on hand assistance with leaky roofs and property control.” Deputy Local Controller, for the Rockhampton Regional Council SES Unit, Western (Mt Morgan) Group, Darren Barnicoat said on the crew’s early works. “By the time we had completed our local tasks, the flooding was happening in Rockhampton so this saw us help out with flood boats and incident control, and then recovery and clean up.” Darren said. “We were then deployed north and were able to provide assistance to flood affected areas of Townsville and Cardwell.” Discussing the recent honours, Darren said it was certainly a proud moment for all. “Signing up and becoming involved in the SES is really rewarding. You’re helping out your community and region and sometimes even your state.”

“You’re rewarded for the efforts you put in. You don’t really sign up for things like this to get thanked. But to receive something like this for our efforts is really special.” Darren said. Congratulations to all recipients! More on the National Emergency Award: The National Emergency Medal is an operational service medal which recognises significant or sustained service to others in a declared nationally significant emergency. This medal has been issued in recognition of services provided during the 2009 Victorian Bushfires and recently for the 2010/2011 Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi. This medal is issued to a select few, with only those who meet a particular criteria eligible to be nominated. Mount Morgan Phone Directory - 2012

Mount Morgan Railway Museum will hold another of its popular Trolley Ride and Open Days during May. Held in conjunction with the Golden Mount Festival, the event gives visitors and locals the chance to browse the museum, which houses a fascinating collection of memorabilia and artefacts, specifically related to the use of rail in the history of Mount Morgan – all for just $2 entry per person (children under 14 admitted free). Some of the attractions include: •Rides on the railway trolley, the mode of transport for railway gangs whose job it was to keep the tracks operational. •The "Rack Railway Experience", a 3D presentation which explains how Mount Morgan's rack railway system worked to bring trains up the steep incline of the Mount Morgan Range. •A section of the rack assembly which enabled trains to climb the steep incline •Fettlers' shed with displays of old railway tools and equipment •The "Silver Bullet", a stainless steel railmotor •Sausage sizzle, Devonshire Teas, children's activities and more. Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council's Communities Committee, Cr Rose Swadling said the Trolley Ride Day was a great opportunity for locals and visitors to experience some of the region's rail history in an historic setting. "It's a great value-for money-family day which tells the fascinating history of rail and the major role it played in developing Mount Morgan," she said. “With the many visitors that will be in town over that weekend, it is a great opportunity to visit Mount Morgan,” she said. Mount Morgan Trolley Ride and Open Day will be held at the Mount Morgan Railway Museum on Sunday 5 May from 9am to 4pm, with trolley rides from 10am to 1pm. The museum's address is 1 Railway Parade, Mount Morgan. Entry is $2 per person with children under 14 admitted free. Trolley Rides are $2.50 per person.

Golden Mount Festival is here again! A little shorter this year thanks to the lack of public holiday, but none the less the week-end when we celebrate all things Mt Morgan. A very big welcome HOME to all the former residents back in town for the week-end. If you haven’t been in to the shop for a while it’s time to come and check out the huge assortment of new stock that has arrived. We have something for all tastes and styles as we know we have a diverse range of customers. Lately it has been great to get feedback from tourists and customers passing through town on what a great array of stock we have. The big topic of conversation out the front lately has been the work in progress on the front of the building. Just to set the story straight—we weren’t broken into, nor did anyone smash our windows. Due to issues with the footpath and the building we have had to renew the front, and well, a facelift is kind of overdue for the old girl don’t you think?? We can’t wait to see it all finished and painted up— it’s all part of our plans for this year! Mother’s Day is creeping up on us too! It’s the second Sunday in May, the 12th this year. We have loads of ideas for all those mums and NANAS out there. Of course we will be loaded with flowers and gifts. So as not to be disappointed get your bookings in early for delivery. See you at the Festival, we can’t even give you a hint what to look for because we’re still deciding which one of the many cultures to represent. We do know we have plenty of giveaways though!

Last month, the Mount Morgan High School Year 9 cohort held a Science Fair over a three day period, Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th of March. On the first day, the football Origin great, Petero Civoniceva attended the fair. Civoniceva was visiting the school for the ARTIE (Achieving Results through Indigenous Education) program. “Everyone was in hysterics when Petero arrived. We all rushed to get our stalls ready after the parade, we welcomed him and exhibited our demonstrations. Petero was really nice - he took the time to look at all the stalls. It was so great having a footy legend at OUR school! He didn’t seem to mind signing autographs; he even took photos with the groups. We couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces,” states year nine student, Keira Martin-Bray.

Pictured: Taliah Reid, Petero Civoniceva, Annalise Cant, Zara Benjamin, Takiah Grant and Courtney Brown. Photo supplied.

The Fair was named “The Wonderful World of Energy”. Different types of energy were discussed; from solar to hydro. Models, which were created by the students, demonstrated these types of energies. The students were eager to show the public what they had learnt. Kids from the primary school, the general public, teachers and parents all gathered at the splendid event. It was a great day, and a superb way to share what they had learnt. Article by Annalise Cant. Mount Morgan Range closure - update The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing with work to repair the 35 landslips on the Mount Morgan Range, with geotechnical specialists working closely with RoadTek field crews to plan and carry out repairs. In stating this however, ongoing wet weather is hampering the repair efforts. The steep terrain and difficult access mean that each rain shower causes concern for the safety and well-being of the work crews and it is critical that we provide for their safety as our highest priority. TMR still expects that reconstruction of the damaged range crossing can be completed within the initially estimated six month timeframe that was announced in February. During reconstruction, the range will remain closed to traffic and Razorback Road will continue to be the alternative route between Rockhampton and Mount Morgan. Motorists using Razorback Road need to remain vigilant, drive to the conditions and obey all road signage to ensure their own safety as well as that of other road users and road workers. Update provided by Transport and Main Roads.

Family Planning Queensland’s (FPQ) Rockhampton Education team is calling on all parents, carers, community members and professionals from Mount Morgan to join the Mount Morgan United (MMU) Action Group for children. The MMU Action Group will select topics to be covered in workshops for parents and carers and for professionals, all focussed on promoting positive outcomes for children. These could range from healthy eating and exercise to keeping children safe from harm and abuse. Join the Action Group to decide which topics you want for your community. FPQ are already working closely with the Mount Morgan community with the introduction of two free Protection Thru Play children’s groups. Rebecca Stewart, FPQ Project Officer, explains “an early childhood playgroup is offered in partnership with Relationships Australia at The Hub and we are really excited to announce a new partnership with the Aboriginal Corporation to offer a monthly junior youth group in their premises”. Protection Thru Play activities aim to support parents, carers, kinship networks and children to take an active role in protecting themselves and participating in services and resources in their community. Rebecca adds, “These groups have been well received because we ask for the groups’ help in choosing activities. I encourage everyone to come and see for themselves”. Similar to the Protection Thru Play project, she is hoping the community will also get on board with MMU to join the Action Group. “MMU is about developing a program of workshops for families and the community so that children can be nurtured to achieve their full potential.”

The Mount Morgan Men’s shed has commenced activities. It now has its management committee elected and key areas of activity to begin with are wood turning and basic leather work whip making. Initially the Mount Morgan Men’s Shed will be open on Saturdays for wood turning. Other activities will be evening bookings only. This will change as interest develops.

The MMU project also aims to enhance professionals’ understanding of issues impacting on their practice and the provision of services to their clients, in order to improve services to children and their families.

Membership is essential. Yearly membership is $20.00. Some material costs will be required depending on projects.

MMU is a Communities for Children project, an Australian Government Initiative funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). The Smith Family is the Facilitating Partner for Communities for Children in the Rockhampton LGA.

For further information contact: Peter Edman on 0487828444 or email: firstfleeter@gmail.com Gordon Luck on 0457994449 or email: Gordon.luck@hotmail.com

Meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2 pm at The Hub (after the Mount Morgan Interagency meeting). Meeting times will alter when the Mount Morgan Equity and Access meeting is held quarterly.

Special inclusion

Each year, ANZAC Day sees thousands gather together to mark the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, in 1915. As well as this, the day also provides an opportunity for many to take the time to remember all who have served, and all who are currently serving in other conflicts around the globe. In recognition of ANZAC Day this Thursday, the Mount Morgan Argus has the privilege to share a very special letter, detailing the current and courageous efforts of former local resident and current soldier in the Australian Army - Sergeant John Toby.

This letter was recently written by Lieutenant Colonel, Nick Wilson - Commanding Officer in the Australian Army, and was sent to John’s family in Mount Morgan. It highlights the dedicated efforts of John (who is currently serving his second tour in Afghanistan), as well as the impressive works currently being conducted by his team. John, who is a descendant of the Gangulu People of the Dawson/Callide Valley area, grew up in Mount Morgan, and attended both Mount Morgan Central State Primary and Mount Morgan State High School. He has since moved to Darwin, where he resides with his fiancé and three beautiful children. A special thanks to Donna (John’s mother) for sharing this letter with us. Dear Mrs Toby, By way of introduction my name is Lieutenant Colonel Nick Wilson and I am the Commanding Officer of the Artillery Training and Advisory Team – Kabul. John is of course a highly valued member of our team, so noting that we are approximately half way through our deployment, I thought it prudent that I give you a brief update. As I am sure John has told you, our team has a unique place in the mission to Afghanistan. We have the responsibility to provide training, mentoring and advice to the Afghan School of Artillery; and considering there is only one such school in the country I can say with absolute authority that there is no-one like us! In all seriousness, mentoring is a mentally demanding job, calling for a very proficient and well-balanced individual. Technical proficiency and job knowledge are but two qualifications needed; strength of character, humour and maturity are notable others. Not everyone is cut for this sort of work. Indeed I have previously witnessed many excellent soldiers fail at mentoring, simply because it is all-consuming and very difficult to train for. Ultimately, to be successful an individual must not simply be a good soldier – he or she must also be an excellent person. And in this case, John is a perfect example. I am extremely proud of this team, and I am proud of John – especially considering he was recently promoted to Sergeant. I have been an officer and a soldier for almost 20 years, and I can categorically say that these men stand out as some of the best I have ever worked with.

They are motivated, fit, professional and entertaining; and of course quintessentially Australian! Your son captures this spirit. He is an exceptional senior non commissioned officer, and I am continually impressed by his leadership, job knowledge and attitude. Moreover, I am impressed with his quality as an individual. He does credit to his Regiment and his rank, but most important he does credit to you. As a training team, we are the last Australians to fulfill this role. Due to the work of men like your son, the School is almost ready for hand over to the host nation as a fully autonomous product, and it is a privilege to see this task through to its ultimate conclusion. In particular, it is notable because we feel as if we have been part of something important; something tangible and real. As Australians, we have helped to craft a legacy that will endure beyond our presence – and John is a very big part of that. Therefore, you have every reason to be proud. John is an excellent soldier, and a truly engaging person. It has been a very great pleasure to serve beside him. Yours sincerely, N. Wilson Lieutenant Colonel Commanding Officer Pictured: John Toby. Congratulations: Congratulations to the SES volunteers who went well beyond their duties during the 2010/2011 floods and Cyclone Yasi and were presented with the National Emergency Medal on Monday evening. This medal is only issued to a select few after a natural disaster or emergency of national significance and is authorised by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and is an award of the Office of the Governor General. Congratulations to the Mt Morgan Golf Club on your approval for funding of $25,000.00 under the Queensland Government’s Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery program to make vital repairs to the greens and other course facilities. Buy Locally and support our community: Local residents are being urged to support the region’s small business community and shop locally. Member for Mirani Ted Malone, said the Newman Government’s ‘buy locally’ campaign well help boost sales and support jobs in the area. “I’m calling on residents to get behind this campaign and show their support for our community,” Mr Malone said. “Every dollar spent at one of our local small businesses stays local, and has a direct benefit to our entire region. “One dollar spent at a local business returns five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies. “I would urge everyone to pick up a ‘Buy Locally’ sticker from my office and put it on your car, or if you are a small business, display it in your window, and really get behind this initiative.” “This campaign will support and strengthen local communities.” Get in the Game funding tripled to $47 million: Get in the Game will now provide help to thousands more Queensland families by reducing the costs of club registrations and funding better equipment and infrastructure and means the original number of grants for the three year period will now be available each and every year. One of the greatest thing about this program is that more than 20% of vouchers were issued to children who had never been members of a sporting club and it’s great to know it is relieving the cost of living for Queensland families doing it tough. Green and course upgrades:

The Mount Morgan Golf Club is seeing some major works and upgrades made to its green and course facilities, thanks to recent grant funding. Our club is very pleased to announce that we have been approved for funding of $25,000 under the Queensland Government’s Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery program. Thanks to this funding, upgrades have commenced, and are expected to be carried out over the upcoming weeks. The course will remain open during this time and all are welcome to come along to the club and enjoy a game. Men’s Open Championships: This Sunday (April 28) will see the Men’s Open Championships held at the Mount Morgan Golf Club. This is one of the key events in our calendar, and sees a number of people participate from around the region each year. We would like to welcome all to come along to this event. Local male golfers interested in taking part in the Championship are also welcome. Please phone Doug Wooffindin for further details: 0409580832. Curry Beef Noodles For One

There is still time to enter the 2013 Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Community Awards!!

Okay, I’ve had a chap ask me for a quick and easy meal for one that is cheap but must tick the nutrition box plus be a bit spicy, So... I’ve come up with this little Curried Beef Noodle dish for one. It costs about $4 a serve, and yes, you can upsize the amount to feed a family of four - just times the quantity by four - and you have a hearty curried beef noodle dish for these chilly days ahead. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Ingredients: •150g beef strips •1 small onion •1 packet instant noodles (I use Mi-Goreng noodles) •1 tablespoon oil •1 teaspoon curry powder hot/mild (you can add more or reduce if you like) •1 teaspoon soya sauce (light) •200gm frozen vegies (Asian) •300mls stock (cook noodles in but keep for sauce)

Do you know someone who does any of the following?: • Inspires the community • Encourages local sports • Goes above and beyond in their workplace • Strives to beautify their property and/or the local area • Makes an inspiring effort in the fields of arts and/or literature • Volunteers much of their time and efforts to the local area

Nominate someone today in one or more of the award’s six official categories! Nominations close April 29, 2013 with winners announced during the official opening of the Golden Mount Festival.

Head online to our website (www.mountmorgan.org.au) for details on each category, as well as how you can nominate! Hard copies are also available from our office (61 Morgan Street, Mount Morgan).

Method: Fry beef strips and onions until brown. Add any spices/seasoning and oil/sauces from the noodle packet. Next, add curry powder and soya sauce. Slowly add a little stock (from noodles), and reduce them. Add a little more now. Next, add veggies (which are preheated in the microwave oven), then add all the remaining stock and reduce sauce. Lastly, add cooked noodles and serve. Enjoy with a nice cup of Green Tea or Lemon Tea.

Do you have a story idea or inclusion for an upcoming issue of the Argus?? Contact Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc: Phone: 4938 2333 / Email: mmpad@bigpond.com Or pop in and see us at our office: 61 Morgan Street.

What’s set for next issue (May 9):

Be sure to catch the next issue of the Mount Morgan Argus for all of the highlights of the 2013 Golden Mount Festival, with winner details and a whole lot of pictures! This issue will also include Pride in your Town Award winners, the local ANZAC Day services, details of the Future Management of the Mount Morgan Mine meeting, the official opening of the Community Garden (upgrade), winners of the Mt Morgan Men’s Open Championships, and more! We also welcome additional inclusions! If you have an article, advertisement or story idea, please contact our office: mmpad@bigpond.com / 4938 2333. Please note, cutoff for inclusions in this issue is strictly 2pm Friday, May 3.
