Another golden weekend in the Mount

Well folks, that’s another May weekend all wrapped up... and what a great weekend it was.

A sincere thank you to the Golden Mount Festival Committee for their wonderful efforts.

Last week saw months of preparation come to fruition for the team, and hats off to each Committee member and volunteer for another great and smooth running event.

Friday evening’s celebrations were certainly an impressive start to this year’s Festival and a wonderful substitute for our usual public holiday event!

It really seemed as though a great night was had by all; with so much entertainment on offer and a great atmosphere throughout the night. And of course, let’s not forget to make mention of the impressive fireworks display – what a way to get the celebrations started!

Congratulations to all who were recognised for their community efforts on the evening also, through the first Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Community Awards.

Our town is certainly made up of many hardworking and passionate community members. We can’t wait to see who our nominees are next year.

Saturday also proved a great day for all, with the live entertainment, stalls and amusement rides, a great procession and of course, the iconic annual competitions.

Congratulations to all of the lucky winners in Saturday’s challenges - the Dig 4 Gold and Running of the Cutter.

Speaking of the Running of the Cutter – a special mention must be made about the Cutter statue, which received a spruce up in the lead up to the Festival.

Crowd attends community forum Over 100 local residents took the opportunity to learn of the current and future management at the Mount Morgan Mine Site last month, attending a community forum at the Mount Morgan School of Arts.

Queensland Government Assistant Natural Resources and Mines Minister Lisa France addressed the forum, along with Mount Morgan Mine Rehabilitation Manager Samantha Pegg, who updated the audience on the current site rehabilitation works, water quality management and monitoring.

The presentations addressed some of the difficulties faced during the January flood event; with details provided of an unforeseen, uncontrolled release occurring from the Open Cut Pit, after the area received its annual rainfall in just three days.

Also covered was the current status of the pit’s water level; with around 11,500 megalitres of water sitting in the pit, or around 330 mls below the crest of the spillway (at the time of the meeting).

The discussions also highlighted the problems associated with historic acid rock drainage and the importance of the seepage interception systems introduced at the site.

With no easy fix to the water issue, the presenters announced that the Department is continuing to improve the situation to the best of their abilities; treating and releasing a percentage of the pit’s water each day through the use of the site’s lime dosing treatment plant, and four evaporators.

Unfortunately, a sudden and severe storm drowned out much of the question and answer session, resulting in an earlier than expected finish for the forum.

A number of local residents took the opportunity to ask departmental representatives one on one questions however, following the forum’s official wrap up.

It is also anticipated that regular updates will be supplied by the Department in future editions of the Argus.

---------------------------------------------------------Furthermore, among the questions on the evening was the status of Norton Gold Fields, and known plans to see the mine operational once more.

A spokesperson of Norton Gold Fields released the following statement to the Mount Morgan Argus last week:“Norton’s intentions have not changed since its announcement to the ASX on 11 April 2013: it continues to consider options for its Mount Morgan project, including divestment.”

Residents were also told that expert environmental engineering consultants are assisting the Government to conduct a whole of site management review, which will look at a range of options on future site rehabilitation initiatives and water management improvements.

The forum included an open discussion about a broad range of issues of interest to the local community and provided an opportunity for Mount Morgan residents to ask questions and have their say.

Hundreds of local residents paid their respects to our servicemen and servicewomen on ANZAC Day last month; taking part in one or more of the commemorations held in the local area.

For a number of residents, the day commenced with a Dawn Service at Mount Morgan’s ANZAC Park, lead by Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mike Johnston.

Around 60 faithful supporters gathered silently for the 4:30am service, and under a still starry sky, marked the 98th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

Commemorations continued later in the morning, with the annual march (pictured above) and 11:00am service.

Crowds lined the Central Business Area to witness the march; applauding the Veterans, school students and organisation representatives making their way through Morgan Street, to ANZAC Park.

The Salute this year was taken by Councillor Cherie Rutherford.

A crowd of over 250 people then gathered at ANZAC Park for the 11:00am Service, also lead by Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch President, Mike Johnston (pictured right).

The crowd was made up of a mixture of generations, all celebrating the ANZAC spirit and paying their respects to all servicemen and servicewomen, past and present.

Among those present on the day was local resident, Dawn Porter.

“I thought it was a beautiful service and I really enjoyed it,” Mrs Porter said.

For Mrs Porter, ANZAC Day provides an opportunity to pay respects to all soldiers, with one in particular very close to her heart.

“For many years I attended the local services with my husband, Allan. He passed away in 2004, and I continue to attend the services today in his memory.”

Mrs Porter’s husband, Allan Charles Porter fought in the 42nd Battalion of WWII. Last month’s service saw Mrs Porter lay a wreath in memory of Mr Porter and on behalf of the 42nd Battalion, along with a wreath on behalf of the RSL Women’s Auxiliary, of which she is a life member.

Did you see the wonderful and very amusing Crackup Sisters at the Golden Mount Festival? The girls dropped by a few times over the week-end and had a good look around. We were pretty stoked when they said, “Wow, you’re not JUST any old Newsagent, you’re a bit of everything, this place is GREAT!” We hoped you liked our touch of Irish in the procession. As usual the girls loved getting out and giving loads of gear away, we hope the luck of the Irish was with you and you managed to get some of our giveaways. Last, but not least, a big thank you to our mate Darren Bowman and his band of merry men and lovely lady, for putting us into a second place spot in the cutter! When local resident David Sealy became involved in the fire service in 1993, he did it for the chance to help out the community.

Two decades on, his passion and drive for the service remain exactly the same.

This month marks the twentieth year Dave has been involved in the fire service, and he certainly has exciting news to celebrate.

The dedicated local has recently learned that he was successful in his final exams to become a station officer; a qualification that has been months in the making.

“It’s twelve months of study, followed by a week of prac and then a debrief.” Dave said when asked on what the course entails.

“For the first twelve months you do assignments, which are mostly to do with management and staffing responsibilities and that’s all done from your station.

“Then, you go away to Brisbane for a week for the practical, and in all honesty this is quite full on.”

Dave said the intense program involves realistic scenarios for each course participant, testing each on their safety and management skills.

“Out of my course this year, we had nine participants and only four of us passed,” Dave said.

“Of course I felt very lucky to be one of the four.”

With the rigorous study behind him, Dave now looks forward to his new role as officer in charge, in the North Rockhampton fire station.

“I was lucky enough to find a position so close to graduating. I begin my new role this month, and I’m really looking forward to it.” Dave said.

“This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I feel really fortunate that I’ve been able to achieve what I set out to do.”

Dave’s journey in the fire service began at the age of 19, when he signed up as a temporary fire fighter with the Mount Morgan station on the 24th of May. Dave was then appointed as Captain in 2003 and later carried out a recruit course to become a permanent.

“It’s been a hectic few years with some of the studies,” Dave laughed.

“But it’s all been worth it. You get to help out the community and that’s what I love about it.”

“You’re given scenarios and tests,” Dave said.

“For example, you have about 14 fire fighters that you need to manage during an exercise. Half way through, the trainers will pull you up in your tracks and ask you where all of your fire fighters are, and you’ve got to be able to tell them each person’s location.”

Successful in both his theory and practical exams, Dave says he is happy to have his studies behind him.

“It’s a challenging twelve months, and of course it has to be, it’s the last exam you do for the fire service.”

A challenge to say the least, Dave said the course often only sees about 50 percent of participants deemed successful.

Locals raise cups for cancer support

Throughout the year many enjoy a cuppa simply just because... But then there’s also a time of year when many enjoy a cuppa for a cause.

Last month saw a number of local residents do just this with Mount Morgan QCWA’s Annual Big Cuppa for Cancer.

Around 30 people gathered at the Mount Morgan CWA Hall on Saturday, April 27, to enjoy a morning with friends, while also raising funds for cancer research and prevention.

The event was held as part of the nationwide fundraiser “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea”.

Attendees for the local occasion enjoyed a line up of live entertainment (provided by local musician, Jim Lynch), raffles, morning tea, and of course a cuppa or two.

The annual “best outfit competition” was also held as part of the event, this year awarded to local resident, Dorothy Hoad.

The morning also featured a discussion from local resident and registered nurse, Noelene Crone, on the importance of cancer symptom awareness for both men and women.

The annual event proved another success for the local QCWA Committee, with an impressive $500 raised during the morning.

National Simultaneous Storytime Nick Bland’s hilarious picture book “The wrong book” will be read in libraries and schools around Australia at 11.00am on Wednesday 22 May. Lively Knitting & Crochet Book Clubs Passionate knitters are invited to the Mount Morgan Library each Friday morning from 10.00am -11.30am during the cooler months to join in a special community project. This year, handy craftspeople at various Rockhampton Regional Libraries are creating beanies, scarves and blankets for the Homeless Connect event which will be held in Rockhampton on June 20. The funds will now be donated to the Cancer Council, in aim of assisting continued work in cancer research, prevention and support services.

The Mount Morgan United Action Group is proud to be launching the first of 16 FREE workshops for interested Mount Morgan community members, parents and professionals.

These workshops are designed to promote community learning, build partnerships and foster a deeper understanding of factors impacting on our children’s life outcomes. Below are the first two workshops for our community capacity building programs.

Understanding and Promoting Protective Behaviours in children: The first community education workshop on offer is most suited to parents, guardians, carers, and interested Mount Morgan community members.

Among other things, this 1 hour workshop will: • Discuss how children learn about sexuality.

• Examine typical childhood sexual development and why sexuality education is important.

• Offer tips on responding positively to tricky questions.

•Showcase a range of locally available resources to assist participants to engage in discussions with children.

The 2013 Golden Mount Festival kicked off with a bang last Friday, hosting an evening of entertainment at the Mount Morgan Dam. The typically tranquil location became a hive of excited activity on the evening; with family and friends eager to celebrate the Golden Mount.

A substitute for the traditional Labour Day holiday event, the evening proved a major success and saw hundreds in attendance.

The evening offered stalls, amusement rides and live entertainment, along with an outstanding fireworks display (pictured right - photo by Mick Joicey).

The official opening was conducted by Member for Mirani, MP Ted Malone, with the welcome to Country carried out by Curtly Toby.

Proud recipients of community awards The Friday evening festivities also saw the official presentation of the first Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Community Awards.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated (MMPAD) President, John Steinberger kicked off the evening’s presentation, discussing what the new awards are all about.

“The idea for this project was initially brought to our organisation by a number of local residents.” John said.

“We agreed that it was a great idea, and a special way to acknowledge those hard working community minded locals who contribute so much of their time and expertise for the benefit of the community.”

Established by MMPAD earlier this year, the awards welcomed nominations from the local community during the month of April, with a number of residents taking the opportunity to acknowledge those they felt worthy of recognition.

Over twenty nominations were received for the 2013 Awards, with each nominee surprised upon learning of their nomination.

Friday evening’s presentation commenced with each of the nominated locals recognised; presented with a framed certificate in appreciation of their efforts provided to the local community.

“Whether it be providing service with a smile, having a well presented yard, having an inspiring attitude, or time and effort dedicated to the local area – to be nominated in one or more of these categories proves that these individuals are making a positive impact in the lives of others in the community and in the local area as a whole. This is a great achievement...” the presentations announced.

Certificates were then followed by the official presentation of trophies; awarded to the evening’s overall winners chosen by a panel of judges during the lead up to the festival.

Trophies were presented by Member for Mirani, MP Ted Malone, Councillor Cherie Rutherford and Councillor Ellen Smith.

Overall winners announced on the night were: Inspiring Individual: recognising a local individual who is recognised as an ambassador for the local area and is inspiring others through their actions and attitude.

- Presented to Bette Broom and Abbie Rowe.

Helping Hands: recognising a local individual who devotes their time and effort to the Mount Morgan community, through voluntary efforts.

- Presented to Margaret Hall.

Creativity in the Community: recognising a local individual or group who is making an inspiring effort in the field of arts and/or literature.

Pretty Neat: recognising a local individual who makes a continuous effort in the upkeep and beautification of their property and the local area.

- Presented to John Devenish.

Service with a smile: (Individual and Business/Group) recognising those who strive to go above and beyond in their workplace.

- Individual: presented to Narelle Housman.

- Business/Group: presented to Kindy Care.

Good Sports: (Junior and Senior) recognising a local individual who is making a positive impact in the sporting life of the local community – either in a playing or supporting capacity.

- Junior: presented to Corrina Gasler and Tyler Toby.

MMPAD sincerely thank all who supported the project.

Thousands headed to Mount Morgan Central Business Area last Saturday, to relish in the Saturday celebrations of the 2013 Golden Mount Festival.

Crowds were kept busy throughout the day with the variety of street markets, live entertainment and amusement rides on offer in Morgan Street, along with a number of programme highlights and iconic competitions.

Event Coordinator, Jordana Aston said the Committee were happy with how they day progressed.

“While the numbers were not as big as last year, we had a great day.” Jordana said.

“It had a wonderful family feel to the whole event.

“Overall the festival was a success, and it was great to be able to showcase Mount Morgan, with visitors and stall holders coming from all over the Region.”

With the Festival now all wrapped up, the Committee thank all who supported the event.

“We would like to thank the community of Mount Morgan for all their support, all our volunteers for their hard work over the two days, as well as all the performers for making themselves available to us and entertaining everyone.” Jordana said.

This year’s Festival theme “One town, many cultures” was well supported in the street procession, seeing a number of local groups and businesses represent the town’s diverse culture, and the number of miners from around the world who found employment at the Mount Morgan Mine through their float entries.

The Dig 4 Gold Competition was highly contested this year, with a crowd filling the sandpit in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.

The Running of the Cutter again proved a highlight at this year’s Festival, with crowds gathering in the Central Business Area to witness the iconic competition.

One of the seven teams in this year’s senior cutter challenge were 2012’s Cutter Championsthe Panthers, who made the trip from Rockhampton to defend their title. The Panthers again proved victorious, and went home with the $1,800 cash prize.

Second place winners, were the Mount Morgan News team, taking home the $900 prize.

Crowds of locals and visitors took the opportunity to continue their weekend of celebrations last Sunday, with a family fun day at the Mount Morgan Rail Museum.

The morning event saw attendees entertained with a range of amusement available, including trolley rides, children’s activities, live entertainment and an array of displays.

Blooming good effort in Community Garden Upgrade

Mount Morgan’s Community Garden is looking better than ever of late, thanks to an impressive and recently completed upgrade.

The new look is the result of four months of hard work, carried out by five local residents through a work skills training project.

The team officially unveiled the results of their efforts with a presentation held for the local community last Monday.

A number of local residents took the opportunity to meander through the garden beds and discuss the site’s changes with the on the ground team.

The upgrade, which was a joint venture between Neato Employment Services and the Australian Government, includes the introduction of ten raised garden beds, a new irrigation system, as well as the upgrade of an outdoor setting and shaded area.

Along with the upgrade’s official unveiling, the morning also saw each participant in the project presented with a certificate of appreciation; recognising their dedication to the project.

Neato Work Experience Coordinator, Mr John Kerry said the local team’s commitment to the project was encouraging, particularly given some of the major setbacks faced in its duration.

“The January flash flooding certainly proved a setback for our team – washing away the early stages of work,” John said.

“But the team persevered and as we can see, they have done a terrific job.”

With the project now all wrapped up, John says the community can once more reap the benefits of a community garden.

“The garden is now open for the public to enjoy once again and we really hope that people will take advantage of this great resource.”

Mount Morgan Vs Dawson Valley: On the 27th of April MMRU played a home game against Dawson Valley.

The ending score was 32 to 10, ending in a loss for Mount Morgan.

The boys played a great game, with players far and few due to many having work or personal commitments on the day. In all, the remaining players pulled together to try and get a win but were overcome by Dawson Valley.

Wade McEffer scored our first try, Scott Toby kicked one conversion.

We would like to thank everyone who came down and supported the club and players.

Mount Morgan Vs Colts:

The annual Men’s Open Championships saw the Mount Morgan Golf Club in full swing last month, as locals and visitors from around Central Queensland headed to the local course to take part in the event.

More than 50 golfing enthusiasts took part in the challenge, held on Sunday April 28.

Winners for the competition were: A Grade – Darryl Myles B Grade – John Thomas C Grade – D. John The Mount Morgan Golf Club Committee sincerely thank all who took part in the competition. A special thanks also to all who assisted on the day, and helped the event run smoothly.

On the 4th of May MMRU travelled to Rockhampton to play against Colts.

This weekend saw the boys came away with an impressive win, with the final score 37-8.

Jerry Bray scored 3 tries and Todd Toby scored 2 tries.

Scott Toby, Todd Toby, Daniel Hixon and Lucas Marinetti each kicked a conversion. There were also 2 penalty goals kicked.

TENNIS: Kabra Sports & Recreation Club plays weekly.

Mountain Mick’s Chicken & Bacon Creamy Pasta

2013 Mt Morgan Show Update: With only a little over three months till this years show, the show committee is very busy planning and organising.

An early bird edition of the program was printed last week and is available around the town for those who are wanting to get in early and plan what they are entering in the show.

We are also looking for more volunteers, which our poem below written by Frank Clark is all about. If you are interested in helping and attending meetings, please contact Ammie on 0419371315.

The next meeting is on Saturday 11th May 2013 at 9am at the showgrounds. All new members welcome.

Here’s one for the whole family! It’s cheap to make- it will fill them up and it tastes great. And NO chilli.

It makes a tasty winter warmer on our chilly nights and is even great the next day if there is any left over. Hope you enjoy. I rate this as a 1 ♦ Diamond which is very easy, so ask the kids to give you a hand to make it - it’s never to early to start learning to cook. It’s a great life skill.

Ingredients: • 1pkt Penne pasta (boil in boiling salty water), drained • 1 cup diced bacon (3 rashers) can use short cut bacon • 4 chicken thigh fillets, sliced • 2 medium onions diced • ½ red capsicum diced • 3 cloves of garlic (crushed) • 2 tblsp parsley flakes • ½ teaspoon black pepper • ½ teaspoon salt • 2 teasp olive oil • 400ml cream (you can use Light & Easy) • 1 cup milk • 1 teasp chicken stock powder

Method: Saute bacon in a little olive oil. Once a little bit brown, add onions with the bacon until onion is translucent.

Now add the red capsicum, then add chicken slices, garlic, parsley and salt & pepper. Stir in together and cook for 2 minutes.

Add the 200ml cream and cup of milk and the chicken stock powder. Now poach the chicken in the milk/cream for 15 minutes on low heat. It’s time now to add the last 200ml of cream - stir in, now pour the cooked sauce over the cooked pasta. Stir the sauce through the pasta (the hot pasta will suck up a lot of the sauce).

Now serve up. Sprinkle lightly with Parmesan cheese it you like. I think “Hot Coco” would be nice served or a piping hot “MILO”, now this will warm up everyone’s tummies for a good night sleep on “Chilly Winter Night”.
