History & Reflections
Pride in your Town With all the construction work going on in Morgan Street for beautification purposes the Elvert Lewis Memorial Light is standing out so prominently we have decided to refresh memories of its significance to locals or to advise any new comers of its history. Before talking of Elvert, the son of Mr R H and Mrs Lewis perhaps an introduction to his parents is very worthwhile. I think the parents may have been of Welsh origin. In the 1930’s Mr Lewis was a Presbyterian Minister, who with his wife walked everywhere, up and down the hills visiting his Church members or anyone that needed some caring. He never had the convenience of a motor car. They were a very dedicated couple caring for all and giving any assistance where needed. As there was no Manse in those years they resided in a house in Central Street, and each Sunday held Sunday school lessons on the veranda. This, I can vouch for as I attended those classes. Their family consisted of son, Elvert, and daughter Eirlys both Welsh names. Eirlys married Harry Weir a well-known school teacher and good musician. Now for Elvert’s story. Like his Dad he had a wonderful disposition, very cheery, bright and always willing to assist where possible. He was born in 1911, attended the Ipswich Boys Grammar School and did his electrical apprenticeship in that town also. At age 24 he came to Mount Morgan and accepted a position with Mount Morgan Limited till 1945. From Mount Morgan Limited he accepted the position of Chief Electrician for the Mount Morgan Electricity Authority. Advancing in his employment his final position was Superintendent for Capricornia Electricity Board based in Mount Morgan. While he held these positions he proved a wonderful citizen and supported all organizations requiring electrical assistance. At Christmas time he had Morgan Street well and truly in the festive mood with coloured lights strung from Morgan to East Streets, adding so much cheer to the Season. Sadly on 30th August 1957 at 46 years, he was working at the sub-station situated in the lower part of the hospital grounds when a severe thunder storm was raging and he was accidently killed. A tragic loss for his family and the residents of Mount Morgan.
Queensland National Plate
By Graeme Meade I bought this plate on Ebay a couple of weeks ago, paid too much, but items like this do not come up very often. It is a printed plate of the Queensland National Hotel (QN) in Morgan Street Mount Morgan. The painting was done by an Australian artist called Clarrie Cox, who lived from 1927 to 2013. Clarrie travelled all around Australia and painted the architecture from the past. His quote “In a world too intent on destroying the old, on stifling individual style, the unique character of Australia’s earliest days must be preserved.” This plate was produced in 1984 by a company called Tudor Productions and also has a stamp on it by Benz Hardegg. In this pub collection range there are 4 plates, with 1000 of each set produced, after 33 years I wonder how many are still around. Commemorative or collectors plates have been around for over 100 years, but they were really popular in the 1960s, up until the 1980s. Company’s like Franklin Mint must have put out thousands of them. Different plates are still being made today.
The Memorial Light that stands in Morgan Street recognises the worth of this citizen and his devoted effort to Mount Morgan. The plaque affixed to the northern side on the brick base is simply inscripted with the words “Elvert Lewis”.
For the non-Mount Morgan people, the QN Hotel was built in the early 1890s. During WW2 the tower was used for plane spotting and had a direct telephone line to the military in Rockhampton. It had bar and dining downstairs and rooms upstairs. It closed in the early 1990s.
For those of us who still remember this happy and generous man it is a memorial that was well deserved.
It’s a lovely building, which is for sale now.

The Orange Dot Movie Review
By Larry at Fox Video A UNITED KINGDOM No, it’s not about the UK. This is the rousing true story of a love so strong that it shook the Empire, it threatened oppressive nations; and it brings vibrant African history to life. It is two years after the end of the second worldwide war in the first half of the 20th century, 1947, and the young future king of Botswana is studying at Oxford. His name is Seretse Khama (perfectly played by David Oyelowo, SELMA). In his final year of study he meets a London office worker, Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, GONE GIRL). The connection is immediate… The attraction is overwhelming. She is captivated by his vision for a better, egalitarian world and he is struck by her willingness to embrace it.
They are a perfect match… meant to be; yet their proposed marriage will be challenged not only by both families, his and hers, but by the British Empire and Botswana’s giant neighbour, South Africa. Amidst the swirling background of apartheid, The Republic of South Africa lays down an ultimatum – either deny and prevent Seretse’s and Ruth’s marriage, or be denied access to South African gold and uranium. Remember, this is at a time when the world was rebuilding after tearing itself apart. Despite the terrible pressures they face, Seretse and Ruth do not waver – they fight for their love against incredible odds… It seems against the whole world.
Opposed by an Empire, can they unite a Kingdom? Filmed mostly in Botswana, A UNITED KINGDOM is visually magnificent as well as being a great true story very well told. (Much of the story is filmed in Seretse’s and Ruth’s real home which is still standing today.) It is rated PG for “mild themes, violence, and coarse language’” so the whole family can enjoy together, and it runs for one-hour and 45 minutes. Amma Asante directs this historical gem about star-crossed lovers sharing a love so powerful it could change the world. A UNITED KINGDOM… Loved it!

Nellie Melba’s ‘Back Blocks’ Tour 1909
15
Article by Catherine McIntosh, Sydney resident and descendant of the colonial Stubbs family of Mount Morgan. Perhaps Mount Morgan’s most famous visitor in the early 1900s was world-renowned Australian opera singer, Madame (later, Dame) Nellie Melba (1861-1931). She performed a concert at the Mount Morgan School of Arts on Wednesday night, 7 July 1909. The Mount Morgan concert was part of her successful ‘Melba Tour 1909’. In Melba’s 1926 autobiography, ‘Melodies and Memories’, she refers to touring ‘the back-blocks of Australia’ in 1909. Hence, the name, ‘Back Blocks Tour’, was coined to describe her 1909 concert tour. Leading Melba expert, Sue Thompson, recently visited Mount Morgan as part of her research for her upcoming book on Melba’s Back Blocks Tour. Mrs Thompson is the president of the Lilydale and District Historical Society in Victoria. Lilydale is a town situated in the Yarra Valley, near Melba’s former home at Coldstream. “Melba would have enjoyed the short time she spent in Mount Morgan. She would have asked all about the mine and its operation, as her father, Dave Mitchell, was a gold miner when first in Australia, and then he developed the Cave Hill Quarry at Lilydale, a place Melba was very familiar with”, Mrs Thompson said. Melba arrived in Mount Morgan from Rockhampton by special train in the late afternoon of 7 July 1909, a few hours before the concert started at 8.00 p.m. Mount Morgan residents warmly welcomed her on arrival. (This author’s maternal great-grandfather was in the brass band that serenaded her). A small group of performers accompanied Melba: pianist, Una Bourne; baritone, Frederick Ranalow; flautist and tour manager, John Lemmone; and accompanist, Harold Whittle.
Image: Nellie Melba in 1909 (aged 48), the year she visited Mount Morgan, courtesy of the Lilydale and District Historical Society, Victoria.
The Mount Morgan concert was a sold-out event and hundreds of people without tickets tried to listen to the concert from outside the hall. Melba’s opening number was the mad scene from the opera, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ (Donizetti), followed by ‘Comin’ thro the rye’, ‘Goodbye’ (Tosti), ‘Believe me, if all those endearing charms’ (Landon Ronald), ‘Se Saran Rose’ (Arditi) and ‘Three green bonnets’. The Morning Bulletin commented on the wild enthusiasm of the Mount Morgan audience (8 July 1909): “It was a demonstrative audience even more so than at Rockhampton on Monday night, an audience quite captivated by the beautiful singing of Madame Melba”. After the concert, Melba and her party of musicians returned to Rockhampton. They would have experienced the train ride down Razorback on the rack railway in pitch dark.
Melba was to perform a second and final concert at the Theatre Royal in Rockhampton the next day. “Travelling to and from Mount Morgan in one day would have thrown her out of her normal routine of resting herself and her voice before a concert. Despite it all, Melba was professional, and as always, gave the fans what they wanted - wonderful music performed by internationally recognised performers”, Mrs Thompson said. In memory of Melba’s visit one hundred and eight years ago, Mrs Thompson has kindly provided the Mount Morgan Historical Museum with a rare 1909 portrait of Melba (pictured) and a concert poster. These items may be seen in the music section of the museum. For further information about Melba and her Back Blocks Tour, visit www. lilydalehistorical.com.au, then click on ‘Historical Projects’ and select ‘Dame Nellie Melba’.
