HISTORY & REFLECTIONS
Shell Uniform Badge
This week we wish to cover some of the past history of Golden Mount Carriage Crafts that operated at the Railway Complex from 1989 until 2014. The original concept came from the idea of selling crafts from a railway carriage at markets and to tourists visiting the Railway station. This was upgraded to a second carriage being purchased from the Railway Department in 1993 as more space was required. An official opening for this carriage was conducted by David Anderson from the ABC on 6.11.93, which was also the 4th birthday of Golden Mount Railway Markets. Many hours of labour went into creating craft items that were produced by a small group of crafty folk (the members). The painting and renovations were performed by the talented ones with a ramp constructed to the second carriage and a walkway connecting both carriages. All windows were replaced with push – up shutters, lockable for security. The steps were widened for easy access and electricity connected to both carriages. A water tap was installed near the Picnic Shed as a convenience for all. Apart from the 1000’s of articles produced over the years, no great fortunes were made by the group, but support was given to local groups with donations of crafts for cent sales and raffles and also to the restoration of the Hunslett Steam Engine.
The members hope they provided a service to the town with friendly conversations to visitors and the serving of tea and coffee from the Picnic Shed on Market days, Waving goodbye to the Hunslett Engine with its carriages full of passengers as it passed on its way out, was a treat for us. There were many highlights over this time. The early years when the May week – ends had a lot of ex – Mount Morganites return from the coalfields to visit family still here or attend a school reunion – very busy times with lots of conversations and laughs. Regular tourist buses from Yeppoon who enjoyed morning tea at the Railway Station and then a visit to the Craft Carriages. Also bus outings from Rockhampton with many ex – Mount Morganites who enjoyed meeting up with some of the oldies still living in ‘the Mount’. Many hundreds of old photos of the town taken from old photos and post cards were sold over the years. With most things in life, nothing is permanent, so the Craft Carriages had to close due to the changing tourist trade and ill health of the remaining members. The Carriages have recently been donated to the Railway Complex and hopefully this will bring new life to them. Many thanks from all those involved with the Carriages over the years and to the loyal locals who supported Golden Mount Carriage Crafts. Remember – be tidy and use the bins – they are provided for our convenience

This old Shell badge was dug up in the Mount Morgan area. When I received it, it was covered in dirt and crud but the Shell Emblem was recognisable. I spent time on cleaning it up, just soaking it in water and chipping away at it using skewers or needles. It finally came up looking quite good. It is about 4 cm across, almost 4 cm tall, weighs about 15 gm and a magnet does not pick it up. The red inside the letters looks like porcelain, it is surprising that it is almost intact. The pin that would have attached the badge to the uniform is missing, but you can see where it was. My guess is that this badge would have been worn on a cap, but could have been on a jacket or shirt. I seem to remember seeing some advertising in which the attendant was “doffing” his cap. Is “doffing” still a word now? There were smaller badges the same look that went on shoulder epaulets. Shell Oil advertising can be roughly dated by the clam shell, the word “Shell” across it started in 1948, other tells are the number of lines in the bottom and the number of scallops in the clam shell. This badge dates from 1948 to 1954. It’s good to see an old piece dug up and saved.
Mount Morgan National Tree Day Mount Morgan residents showed their support for National Tree Day on the 31st July where over 65 people turned up eager to help the environment and at the same time beautify the spectacular Arthur Timms Lookout. Initially what appeared to be a monumental task of planting 100 native plants in the gardens at the lookout proved to be much simpler as children and adults converged on the site well before the allocated time of 11am. Some residents came prepared for action with their own shovels however the Rockhampton Regional Council’s post hole digger soon made short work of the task. One by one the tree pile slowly diminished and with no shortage of eager green thumbs, more plants had to be sourced. A well-earned meal was on the cards after all that planting and luckily the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan were on hand to provide a cool drink and sausage sizzle. Some residents were fortunate enough to take home a free native seedling courtesy of Rockhampton Regional Council.

Bit of Background for National Tree Day Thank you to our Mayor Margaret Strelow who was able to visit the lookout to see the finished product. National tree day was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John. It has now grown to be Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature protection event. Planet Ark is asking active Australians to help us plant one Million new native trees and shrubs across the country National Tree Day is a “Call to Action” for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. Each year, about 300,000 People Volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them. Since National Tree day started in 1996, approximately 3 million people have planted 23million native seedlings.
It’s a day to venture outdoors and get to know your community, and most importantly of all, to have fun This year Planet Ark Celebrated a milestone 21 years of National Tree day. Nearly 300,00 people Australia wide took part in over 3,200 sites run by councils, schools, environment and community groups and Toyota Dealers across the country Planting 1.1 Million Native trees, shrubs and edibles to help beautify their local urban areas. Dora Hall: first mayoress of Mount Morgan
Mary Frederica Dora Hall was the first mayoress of Mount Morgan. Commonly known as Dora, she was the wife of James Wesley Hall (1839-1901), the first general manager of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. Ltd (‘Old Company’) and the first mayor of Mount Morgan. Dora Hall was born in Williamstown, Melbourne, in 1864. Her father, William Dempster, was the manager of the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank in Williamstown. Miss Dempster would have met James Wesley Hall through her father’s bank. The pair married at the Anglican Church in Williamstown in July 1889 and honeymooned in Adelaide. At the time, James Wesley Hall was the general manager of the Old Company. When the newlyweds arrived in Mount Morgan in August 1889, nearly one thousand people gathered on the grounds of their new home, Carlton House, built by the Old Company to house the general manager. The band played ‘Home, Sweet Home’. Dora Hall was presented with a silver tea and coffee service on behalf of the mine employees. James Wesley Hall was unanimously elected the first mayor of the Mount Morgan Borough Council in August 1890. The new mayor and mayoress hosted a ball at the Mount Morgan School of Arts to celebrate the occasion, with over 250 guests.
Mr. J. Wesley Hall then came forward, handed the key of the institution to the Treasurer (Mr. Green) and Mr. Green requested Mrs. Hall to open the door, which that lady did’. Pictured is the only known image of the official opening of the original Mount Morgan Hospital. Nurses can be seen at the front. This author’s maternal great-grandfather is one of the band members (second back row, sixth from right). Dora Hall is believed to be the stylish and poised young lady in a light-coloured dress and dark hat (front row, third from left). Photographic research suggests that 51 year old James Wesley Hall is pictured in a light-coloured jacket and hat (back row, second from left).
The Halls moved to James Wesley Hall’s native England in 1893, following his resignation as general manager. The former mayoress hosted parties and concerts in London. She was presented at a Court Drawing Room in 1895, a popular Victorian royal ceremony. The Halls holidayed in Hastings, Sussex, in late 1895. During the holiday, Dora Hall passed away unexpectedly from an illness (peritonitis) on 23 November 1895 (aged 31). She left behind her three young daughters, husband, parents and four sisters. Her untimely death was reported in Melbourne’s Leader newspaper:‘... none but feelings of regret can be aroused that this lady was cut off so young in years, and so surrounded by all that could make life bright and attractive’.
On Saturday, 30 August 1890, the mayoress officially opened Mount Morgan’s first hospital. Her husband was the president of the Mount Morgan Hospital Committee. The Morning Bulletin of 8 September 1890 published an extract from the Mount Morgan Chronicle about the important event: ‘The new Hospital was declared open to the public on Saturday last, in the presence of a representative gathering of the inhabitants. B. Company, under Captain Richards, preceded by the band, marched to the building, and were drawn up in line before the main entrance.
Dora Hall’s time as mayoress was short. While her husband was re-elected mayor in early 1891, he refused to accept the office, stating: ‘in future the ratepayers might look after their own affairs’ (The Morning Bulletin, 26 February 1891).

A remnant of Dora Hall’s life remains in the region. If you look closely at the Wesley Hall Cup, displayed at the Frenchville Sports Club, you will see the following words engraved: Challenge Cup. Presented by Mr and Mrs Wesley Hall. The couple donated the trophy to the Mount Morgan British Association Football [Soccer] Union in 1894.

By Trish Mathers A question we are frequently asked is “what does it take to become a wildlife carer?” To start with you need to have a licence. These licences are known as a Rehabilitation Permit. This is a licence to care for sick, injured and orphaned native animals., with the view to releasing these animals back into the wild. These permits are issued by the Dept. Environment and Heritage Protection in Qld. Although they are free, they are subject to very strict conditions. These permits are either issued to an individual person, or to a group (which is then known as a licenced group). A licenced group then issues their members with a permit to care for wildlife under the jurisdiction of that group. An Individual permit holder holds their licence under the jurisdiction of DEHP. It is preferable for a new carer to join a licenced group, or to be included on the permit of an individual licence holder. After 2 years of being mentored by licenced carers, a person may, if they wish, apply for an individual rehabilitation permit., however most group members remain licenced under the group permit. It is extremely rare that a member of the public would be issued an Individual permit. You need to prove that you have the necessary training before this will be considered. You also need to attend training courses for the animals that you intend to care for. Time is one of the main considerations in becoming a wildlife carer. That, and commitment. An orphaned joey for instance may need feeding every 3 hours around the clock and can cost between $1200 to $4000 to raise, depending on the species., and the ongoing maintenance costs need to be considered, such as suitable fencing, enclosures, avairies, carry boxes, heat pads, cages, pouches, towels, extra washing, and the willingness to give up a normal lifestyle, such as going out when you wish! A wildlife carer also needs to be able to take animals to the vet when required. Most vets do not charge for the consultation, but any medications, x-rays, etc. are paid for by the carer, or in some instances the group to which they belong. They need to be able to assess when a vet is necessary, and the majority of the time a vet visit is a must., and also be able to cope with the many animals that die or are euthanased. It is the law in Qld. that any animal that is not fit for release into the wild must be euthanased. It is against the law to keep them as pets. We are also required to keep them away from domestic pets, such as dogs and cats. If an animal you have raised think that cats and dogs are ok, then they will very quickly become ‘dinner’ when they are released. The animal must also have the skills required to survive in the wild without human intervention. On the upside, it is a wonderful experience to be able to care for our beautiful native animals, to see their true natures, and to know that all the hours you have put in have resulted in an injured bird or animal can return to its family, to go on to have families of their own. Although it can be hard saying goodbye to a wallaby you have raised from a tiny unfurred joey, just seeing them hop off into freedom is a magical experience. Hours and hours of perusing books, the internet, and liasing with other carers to expand your knowledge is inspiring. Phone 04005 91504
By Larry at Fox Video When many have tried to overcome an obstacle before and failed, sometimes with devastating consequences does that mean it’s impossible? When beyond that obstacle lies almost certain death, would you try with every fibre of your being to overcome the impossible and run headlong into your own likely demise? What if, on the other side of all that mortal peril there was a bunch of people who were guaranteed to die if you didn’t try...would you do it then? For most of us, until we were actually faced with the decision we’ve no way of knowing how we’d react. There are a select few though; brave, principled men and women of conviction, bound by honour and service to their fellow citizens who, without hesitation will put their lives at risk to save others. It does not mean they are unafraid, because true courage is understanding the danger, knowing the fear and forging ahead anyway. We often find these rare, noble people amongst our public services...Police, Ambo’s, the Military, the Firies, Coast Guard, SES...And this issue’s incredible ORANGE DOT MOVIE is a tribute and a thank you to our lifesavers, our everyday heroes who we turn to in times of need. (Remember Marcia? Remember the fires?) The extraordinary true story of the greatest smallboat rescue in U.S. Coast Guard history, THE FINEST HOURS is a tale of courage, loyalty and honour in the face of impossible, overwhelming odds. When a massive storm strikes off the coast of Cape Cod, it rips a giant oil tanker clean in half, trapping more than 30 sailors on its rapidly sinking stern. As Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his crew set out in the only craft available, a 12 seat rescue boat, to save them, Chief Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) struggles to buy his men more time on board what’s left of their giant tanker. Edge of the seat stuff! Also starring Australia’s ERIC BANA & BEN FOSTER (what a cast!), THE FINEST HOURS is from the Disney Studios so you know it’s gonna be great. It’s rated PG so the whole family can watch it together. A salute to our local services and heroes. Thank you guys. This one’s for you.

Got an idea for an arts project?
Green Thumb By Murray Hare
With national Wattle day approaching, I have decided to take this time to tell you about our town’s floral emblem, The beautiful Acacia podalyriifolia or just simply the Mount Morgan Wattle.
The next round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is open and applications are being sought for projects that will start after 31 October 2016. Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Community Development Committee Cr Rose Swadling encouraged people considering applying to have a look at the guidelines on the Rockhampton Regional Council website. See Ad Below for Details
The Mount Morgan wattle goes by a few names. Some of them include the Silver Wattle, Queensland Wattle, Pearl Acacia and the more complicated scientific name of Acacia podalyriifolia (try saying that fast). Most of the year, the Mount Morgan wattle is hard to spot in the crowd of Eucalypts and Grevilleas as you drive through town. This time of year however, It’s the first thing you will notice. With its masses of beautiful yellow pompom like flowers and that greenish silver foliage. This tree is hard to forget. The seeds are relatively easy to collect but can be a little disheartening to germinate as you will not get a 100% strike rate with them. Collect the seed pods once they have started to break, revealing their glossy black seeds. The Acacia needs fire for the seeds to be ready to plant. I do not advise trying to set your house on fire to emulate this scenario. Instead place the seeds in a tin of boiling water overnight. In the morning you will notice some seeds floating and some seeds sinking. The seeds that are floating are non-viable so throw them away. Our lovely wattle grows in many different places outside of Australia from Southern and Eastern Africa to California in the USA. Whilst we have no problems with the plant, it is extremely invasive and is taking over places like Tanzania and even some places down south have declared it a weed. They do say a weed is just a plant growing out of place. The Mount Morgan wattle grows to around 6mtrs but has been known to grow as tall as 10mtrs. Sadly the tree has a relatively finite life span of only 10 - 15 years. Towards the end of the tree life, it will stop producing so many leaves and the tree will start to resemble a gnarly mess with a few yellow flowers. After these die, it is best to remove the tree but don’t plant another one in exactly the same place. Plant the new one further away from the previous location.

27/7 Last Wednesday saw our Junior Raptors team take on a spirited Heights College at RSHS playing fields. Although the other team had some tall and strong boys playing for them, they had previously not played football before. We used this to our advantage. Once again our Junior boys ran rampant over the other team winning 32 -4. It was a good effort by all even though we only had one person on the bench. Man of the Match was Joshua Grange. This week our Junior Raptors take on TCC at Browne Park on Wednesday night at 4:30pm. Our Intermediate Raptors team also won by a considerable margin last Wednesday night, taking down the prestigious St Brendan’s College 54 – 14. This week saw the arrival of our year 10’s that normally play in the Open’s teams. This only bolstered our team as from the whistle we took control and did not let off. I would also like to thanks those RSHS boys for filling in for us each week just to make up enough numbers. Like them, we are proud of the efforts all our teams are putting in to pull off some record wins. Man of the Match was Tyler Toby. This week our Intermediate Raptors take on Heights College in what will no doubt be a tough match for the boys, at Browne Park at 5:30pm. 28/7 Our Open Raptors went down in the Mount Morgan record books last Thursday with a 72 – 0 flogging over RSHS. This is the new alltime highest score from a Rugby League team I have been told. The boys were ruthless with strong tackling, good line running and swift ball movement through the hands. I am proud of the boys thus far, but it is important that we keep it up all the way to finals. Man of Match Shai Hayden. This week our Open Raptors take on Heights College at Browne Park at 6:30pm. Come down and show your support for our teams!

Towards the end of July, Clouds wind, cold and rain In August hope this does not happen again To add to the woes the car broke down For the part to arrive, a week before it was going again How could I get to the show without four wheels that go It is our show, make sure it does not slow People numbers is what makes it great Set you sights on the show gates For a week of clouds and woes and empty car shed Now a car in the shed with no lights red After cloudy days expect some sunny days It would be good it extended to show day Will Mother Nature be kind and let the sun shine? Hope for blue skies and sunshine Prepare for the fireworks boom Because the Mount Morgan Show is coming soon.
