HISTORY & REFLECTIONS
The Oxford dictionary defines “Nostalgia” as a wishful memory of an earlier time, a sentimental yearning for some period of the past. Not that those past years were easy and carefree but they do hold heaps of memories.
If you were fortunate you may have owned a Simpson clothes wringer – a piece of equipment that could easily mutilate a hand or finger.
One of those memories is of” Wash day” or more likely it should have been called “Slosh day”. It was a mammoth day of hard work by the woman of the house but her efforts always resulted in bright, clean, white clothes.
Finally, to the hanging out of the washing on the clothes line. No rotary hoists in those years but long wire lines, generally running from north to south and held high by a wooden prop. On a windy day it could be quite a chore to stay dry as the wet clothes would flap in all directions. There they would hang in brilliant sunshine till dry and spotlessly clean.
The first task of the day was to light the copper boiler fire. The wood was not always chopped for her either. The copper boiler was placed in a cast iron stand, sometimes it had a chimney, and the boiler filled with water, generally with hand bucket.
The housewife that had completed this hard day’s wash did deserve a cuppa and a scone. Thank goodness for the present laundry with all its push buttons and modern appliances and even the clothes dryer when no sun is shining.
Generally the soap was a long bar and the housewife sliced small pieces into the water. Periodically much energy was used in prodding the sheets, towels etc. with a wooden stick.
Just past this code
The stick was a key piece of laundry gear as it had to be clean and free of splinters. It was often an old broom handle. Then came the “Slop” part lifting the boiling sheets into the drain box, or if lucky into a draining trolley, prior it taking them to the laundry tubs. Then came the big rinse session and the whites had to go through the blue bag operation so as to have them like white fluffy clouds.
another little bit of the that comes to mind at present time is the dress at the recent local Show.
After war years when the show resumed, the young ladies of the town would spend nearly a month’s salary on their new frocks, shoes, hats gloves and handbags and attend the show in all their finery. Today’s culture is of jeans (Some in a torn state for fashion) T-shirts of different shapes and sizes and joggers or thongs. Does fashion really matter that much as all one wants to do is to enjoy the Show?

A Fordigraph Printer Fluid Tin By Graeme Meade from Collectables and Memories on East Street A customer walked in with this tin last week, he was thinking it has something to do with motor oil. I looked at it, read the writing on the tin and some memories started to come back to me. Some people may remember getting a printed form given to them at school or work (I’m talking 1950s to 1970s). The paper would have had an “odd smell” to it and the printing on it may have been purple. If you remember this then it was probably printed on a Fordigraph printer. I remember the primary school I went to having one, I loved that smell that was on the paper. Over the years some of my workplaces had these printers because the master copy could be hand printed or typed and cartoons or artwork could be drawn on. These were invented in the 1920s and would have been very popular after the Second World War. My memory may be a bit hazy, but the fluid from the tin was poured inside the drum in the middle of the printer. The master copy was attached to the drum. As the handle was turned, the spirit in the drum would transfer through the paper and make a copy. The master was good for about 300 copies. In the 1970s Zerox came along and photocopiers wiped out most of the Fordigraph printers. I do not know how old this tin is, but it is a little bit fancy with the artwork on it, the handle soldered on, 1 gallon, so it could be 1920s to 1950s, probably 50s.
Gemma Louise Kirby: Semi Precious Perhaps the most telling lyric on Gemma Kirby’s debut album, Semi Precious, is this one: “Buckle up, boy, cause you’re in for a rough ride.” It’s emblematic of the brash, attitudedriven persona—most certainly a product of her profession as a coal miner—that has been the face of Gemma’s artistic output and broader musical career to date. Of course, backing up that talk has been the job of her other-worldly voice, something that is so chameleonesque it can be soaring a mile high on an anthemic country track one minute and seducing listeners on a quiet love song the next. So where did she start, and where have these gifts taken her? It didn’t happen overnight, that’s for sure. Gemma Kirby first decided she wanted to make it in music when she was a child, and from that point set her life on a course that was most likely to make those dreams come true: supporting countless country artists as an opener, honing her song-writing skills, and performing for audiences as large as 40,000 all by the time she was 16. This adolescent momentum was capped off with the crowning achievement of graduating from the CMAA Academy of Country Music in 2011.

Gemma Kirby will be performing at the Mount Morgan Wattle Festival 3rd september and the Grand Hotel that Evening
But that didn’t remain her best musical accomplishment for long, because in 2012, she was selected to represent Australia in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in America, an event that is essentially the “Talent Olympics” for aspiring performers and entertainers. Not only was she selected – she cleaned up. Winning 10 medals (1 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze) as well as the title of Overall Champion of the World for the Country and Western Division, Gemma launched onto the radar of music fans and industry executives far and wide immediately. She has opened for Jimmy Barnes, has been featured in national media such as New Idea, The Morning Show, The Australian, The Courier Mail and more. Her debut single “Fallen Soldier” from her debut album “Semi-Precious” released in 2015, remained in the top 40 CMC video charts for a staggering 15 weeks. The same video saw her gain recognition as a finalist in the Peoples Choice Awards.

Gemma completed a successful Tamworth Country Music Festival which featured gigs with Ben Ransom and Jonny Taylor. She was a 2016 finalist in the 2016 WA Music Awards and performed at The infamous Boyup Brook Festival. So far in 2016, she has played at the 2016 Urban Country Music Festival, has an NT tour booked and has been chosen by PBR Australia to perform their anthem and VIP acoustic shows. “Coal Train”, the second single from Gemma’s debut album “SemiPrecious” has just been released to radio and has already generated a string of country and mainstream media interest – featuring a LIVE interview on Channel 7’s The Daily Edition, and in QLD music media The Music and SceneStr magazine. Gemma’s next single “Deceiving Eyes’ is slated for an August release. Semi Precious, recorded with award winning producer Matt Fell, is OUT NOW.

It’s Show Time! “What a fantastically, wonderful day”, was the response from Heather Barker, Secretary of the Mount Morgan Show Society when asked for her take on the 18th Annual Mount Morgan Show held on Saturday. “From the weather, the exhibitors, the entertainment, the happy appreciative crowd and the magnificent fireworks display, it was hard to find a down side”, she said. Thanks must go to the small dedicated committee, the pavilion convenors, Pam Aitchison, Venetia Welsh and Karen Sorensen and their willing team of workers, the Mount Morgan SES for manning the gate, the Mount Morgan Rodeo Association for again running a great canteen and for the dedicated support of their members, the Mount Morgan Community for supporting the event and the Rockhampton Regional Council and Councillors Cherie Rutherford and Neil Fisher for their continuing support. A special thanks must go to Councillor Ellen Smith who again stepped up as our Chief Ring Steward, to our Judges and Stewards and especially to students from Mount Morgan High School and the Rockhampton Grammar School who provided services as stewards in the horse and cattle events. The students and their Schools can be very proud of their efforts.
Heather said that she would also like to say a special thanks to Tom and Marie Chopping who stepped in at the last minute to be convenors of the Poultry Pavilion when the convenor was called away due to a family emergency. “Without this support, the continuing tradition of great Mount Morgan Shows would not be achieved”, Heather said. All the results from the Pavilions and from the horse and cattle events will be published on the Show’s website, www.mountmorganshow.com.au in coming weeks.

Brad’s Bargain Box Comes to Mount Morgan
7
Pictured Bradley, Haley and baby Adelaide On Friday the 12th August, Mount Morgan’s newest retail outlet opened its doors for business.
Established in 2014, Brad’s Bargain Box is a locally owned and operated discount variety store in Rockhampton QLD. Our goal is to be the first choice for customers when they are looking for a bargain!
Situated at 79 Morgan Street, Brad’s Bargain Box is the third store for owners and operators Bradley and Haley Walton. Brad opened his first store in September 2014 in East Street Rockhampton, and then one year later he opened another store in Main Street, Park Avenue. One year on another store, however this time in Mount Morgan. When asked what was behind their decision to choose Mount Morgan for their expansion, Brad replied “I saw a need for this type of business in the town. It’s an ideal location shop front wise and we already had a fairly good customer base from Mount Morgan Consumers.” “We stock everyday consumable products at affordable prices as well as brand name quality products and have access to over 3000 lines. It saves them having to travel down to Rockhampton to access our products”.
Flat Pack Furniture has just arrvied in store and stay tuned for all our christmas decorations that will be in stock soon.
“If customers require something we don’t have in stock then we are happy to order it in for them if they’re prepared to wait a couple of days.” Brad said. Bradley moved to Rockhampton ten years ago and during this time he’s visited Mount Morgan on many occasions. “I love the town, its history and people are so friendly”, Brad said. While Brad & Haley needed the assistance of their staff from the Rockhampton stores for their opening, they are looking to employ locals in the business.
We truly are passionate about providing our customers with the most exceptional value products and the highest quality of service. We love what we do! To our customers we promise: Team members who are happy, friendly, and helpful. Fantastic prices that are clearly marked. A fast and easy shopping experience. A well stocked store. A treasure hunt of unique and awesome bargains. A clean environment.
To each other we promise: To be decisive, accountable and results focused. To help each other be successful. Teamwork, mutual respect and integrity. Open communication and feedback. To embrace change and to achieve sustainable solutions.

NewsXpress’ Collectible Bear Event
NewsXpress Mount Morgan held a hugely successful Collectible Bear event on Saturday, 13 August. After adding collectible bears 2 years ago to their varied product range at newsXpress Mount Morgan Schae and Kerrilyn Page, owners of the store have continued to add to the range of Bears they stock. We decided to hold the event on show day as we thought it would add two drawcards to visitors coming to town and we felt it was a compatible match to something show attendees would like Whilst we had a significant number of out of town collectors there were also significant numbers of our local collectors too. It has certainly lifted the profile of the store as a destination for Bear Collectors as most commented they did not know they could get their Bear “fix” locally. We specialise in Charlie Bears, Kaycee Bears, Steiff Bears and now the brand new and exclusive to newsXpress, Willow Bears. These bears are beautifully handcrafted by Bear Artisans in the rolling hills of Kent in the United Kingdom, a truly ethical bear in every sense.
On the day we gave away a Kaycee Bear, Lincoln valued at $1000. Entry was to all who made a purchase. The Lucky winner was Caroline one of the local ambulance officers. We just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the day the success it was. Kerrilyn Page

The Orange Dot By Larry at Fox Video Every now and then a breath of fresh air. Something different. A story that may have echoes of others written before, but told in a completely new way that defies the genres we are familiar with. Doesn’t really fit any of them, so we needed a new term. A BRITISH WESTERN. That’s the genre Louise came up with for this week’s ORANGE DOT MOVIE, JERICHO. A wonderful story of great vision, action, thrills, struggle, triumph and great love, set in the 19th Century England; but it’s made like, and plays like a western...And the concept works beautifully. We’re in Yorkshire, 1874. Penniless following the death of her husband, Annie Quaintain and her two children are turned out of their village home and forced to start a new life in JERICHO. JERICHO is home to a vibrant community of navvies and pioneers, prostitutes and vagabonds who will live and die together in the shadow of the viaduct they’ve been brought together to build. A massive bridge of stone and arches to carry the railroad above and across an entire valley. Without a penny to her name, Annie reluctantly accepts the help of the Railway Agent Ralph Coates and quickly sets herself up in a rented hut, offering board and lodging to the site’s navvies...including one Johnny Jackson. Rough and rustic, it’s a place where people with secrets can hide, and where despite all odds, love can flourish. Set against a visually striking frontier landscape, JERICHO follows the creation of a community from nothing, and the human stories and heroic struggles of survival that emerge. This season is, at 6.25 hours, like a big fat delicious book that you can come back to and curl up with over a period of time. Spaced out with eight 45 minute episodes you can savour it and make it last, or lock up the house and binge. Rated M for mature themes, violence and sexual references, JERICHO will pick you up and carry you back in time. It’s a terrific experience but beware the trap... “I’ll just do one more episode before bed...Oh just one more...” JERICHO. Yesterday wilderness, tomorrow civilization. Loved it!

Got an idea for an arts project?
Green Thumb By Murray Hare One thing i really want to talk to you about are roses and these unusual colours you can find. Now, on those wonderful internet auction sites they sell rose seeds from beautifully coloured and unusual roses. Those beautiful blacks and intricate rainbows look very inticing but im unfortunatley here to burst the bubble of perfection.

Do they exist? Rainbow rose? Yes it does exist but it has been dyed while still in bud. They didn’t take it off the bush like that. The only way you can get a multicoloured rose bush is via mulit-grafting (and that wont even give you 1 flower with seven colours) Black rose? Plain and simply, No. There is no such thing as a black rose so please don’t be fooled. The darkest you will find is a deep red or a dark mahogany. Black , not so much. Blue? In photoshop land, yes. Our world, no. Even the good old blue moon is purple. They are yet to breed a blue rose. There are a few companies trying but are yet to succeed. Green Rose? No. Stay away from any plants that claim to have green flowers. The green flowers are caused by the PApiloma Virus and that one green hippeastrum or gerbera you have will infect your entie stash of gerberas and turn them green. Not so wonderful. It will also stay in the soil and is extremely hard to get rid of The closest you will get to green is a yellow-green called Limelight Pokeball red, black and white? Do i really even have to answer this one? Again, it has been dyed. Please if you think the colour is too good to be true, It normally is. When in doubt head to the leading rose growers in Australia like Treloar roses or even swanes roses. If they dont grow them or they arn’t listed in their catalogues, you can pretty much say they dont exist as these companies scour the corners of the earth looking for new varieties to grow. If you are looking for an interesting coloured rose, buy Abracadabra. That one is real

News From the Golf Club The Ladies CQ Sand Green Championships and Open was held at the Mount Morgan Golf Club on Saturday 6th of August, and what a turn out we had.
10/8 This week saw our Junior Raptors take on the only remaining undrafted team in the competition at Newman Oval, which was The Cathedral College (TCC). We didn’t know what to expect, except that it may be the challenge our boys were looking for. This was not the case with the Raptors scoring an amazing 56 points. Once again it was our defence that kept the other team scoreless and that made results seem much worse. The mercy rule was played which meant that MMSHS could only play nine players on the field against TCC’s 13. It was a great all round effort by the boys. Man of the Match was Latrell Hayden with a hat trick of tries. The Junior team have a week off next week. Our Intermediate Raptors were keen to take revenge on the only team that has beaten them this season, the mighty YSHS. From the kick off it was obvious that our boys did not want to lose again with some great tackling and scoring opportunities coming early through Jakob Noonan. At half time the Raptors had a commanding lead of 20 – 4. With a famous coach spraying during the break the Raptors did not let up and finished off the YSHS team 32-20. Man of the Match was Zammyth Brook (one the RSHS boys playing for the Raptors). The intermediate team face St Brendan’s next week at RSHS at 4:30pm.
The course looked exceptional, and over 30 Ladies from around the region and beyond, descended on the fairway with some outstanding golf played, producing some fantastic results. On the 27th July 2016, Geoff Haddon (pictured), from Junee Railway Roundhouse & Museum in NSW, Visited the Railway Complex. Geoff ,a train enthusiast, was most impressed with our Rail Museum and rolling stock and although not a working station and certainly not as large as the Junee Railway, Geoff said “It’s very good and I found it most interesting”.
The Que for the ladies loo took on a whole new dimension last Wednesday at the Railway Museum, when tourists were lined up outside the Women’s Toilet to hear the piano renditions of Dorothy Perry from Oboist, Victoria. Dorothy visited Mount Morgan approximately 10 years ago with friends and came back this time with her husband on a promise from her friend to check out if the piano was still in the women’s toilet at the Rail Complex. “It sounds really good. I can’t believe how good the pitch is for it’s age.” Dorothy said. You can view Dorothy in action on our Facebook page.
