History & Reflections

Pride in your Town This week we wish to give thanks and acknowledge the excellent volunteer work of so many of our older citizens. All the following and many more are the life blood of our town in their unselfish devotion to assist the town at all times and in so many ways. We have not the space for all those who have performed good work but have tried to mention a number of folk who are well into their senior years. There is Freda McDougall who worked tirelessly for the Frail and Aged and is also ready to share her music when required. Also involved heavily with the Frail and Aged was Maureen Daniels but Maureen quietly helped so many people in all sorts of manner. She is such a caring lady. Nell Shaw and Clarice Pigram who devoted much time and talent to the Arts and Crafts organization where their skilled handiwork assisted in many cent sales and donations to those needing winter clothing or other items. They also played a big part with the Bowling Clubs. Meals on Wheels received excellent benefit for many years with wonderful volunteers. There is Madeline Reinecker, Lenore Barney, and Dawn McClelland who are just a few of those many wonderful people who made such a difference over so many years to folk needing wholesome meals. To the younger volunteers our thanks go out to you too. Then we had the devoted husband and wife teams who worked tirelessly for so many organizations.

Frank and Rose Molloy must be mentioned in this category and their continuous hard work to keep the Community Services Hall operational for all to enjoy. The Church of England with other organizations has received benefit from the talent of Keith and Annie Hare. They assist in so many ways in the community. This couple have now had to ease up a little due to ill health but no doubt will still be there if needed. We wish them better health for the future. Pat and Barry Hare have played a feature roll with the Seniors Citizens association and Pat has always willingly given her musical talent to any who have asked for her assistance. They have been the founders and strength of Neighbour hood Watch. If your name is not included in the above do not think for one minute your hours of good work and volunteering have not been appreciated. Space does not allow too many words but we have tried to mention the most senior. They were a special group and now we hope they are quietly enjoying their later years.

Tilly Iron

Graeme Meade from Collectables & Memories East Street

Last edition was about an iron from the 1920s, this week another iron, but from the 1950s. This iron is a Tilly Iron, Model DN 250. Most people will know the name Tilly, it began business in 1818, in England, and they are still in business, making lamps. This iron burns kerosene, some people may call it paraffin. This iron was made as a Model DN250 from 1950, production ended in 1970. The interesting thing is that this iron was competing with electric irons, some of their advertising said the iron will save you time and no more frayed tempers, and will be a friend to every house wife!!! A self-contained unit can be use inside or out, on holiday or at home. No wires or flexes to worry you saves time and money. Something about the freedom off being cordless, seems we have gone full circle on that. The iron is cream with a black Bakelite handle, the fuel can is at the end of the grip. It has a steel base with a knob at the end to control the heat. It is a pressure iron, same as the lanterns, the handle to pump it up is on the right side. It weight 2.2 kg empty.

Mount Morgan’s Grand Hotel Turns 115 The Grand Hotel Mount Morgan was built on 6th July 1901 by contracted builder J.Macfarlane at a cost of approximately 4,300 pounds. It was designed by Messrs. Eton & Bates, architects commissioned by Mr. R. Shaw. The hotel was Heritage Listed in 1992 and is described as ‘a well composed building of architectural merit, including a corner tower and well detailed verandahs.’ Taken from Queensland Hertiage Council Website.

The Grand in it’s early days received it’s lighting from candles, kerosene lamps and boasted a cellar, sample room and swinging bar doors. Coal which was stored in the empty allotment next door provided heating to the rooms and gas which was supplied from Mount Morgan’s own gas works in Byrnes Parade was also used. Beer was sold to the hotel in wooden casks and not steel drums as it is today. Buggy’s would meet every train at the Mount Morgan Railway Station and collect visitors who were staying at the hotel.

The Grand is Mount Morgan’s only brick hotel building and has Wunderlich stamped metal ceilings. The Hotel has had many licensees over the years with Joseph Moulds being the first owner-licensee and when he died in 1907, his wife Lucy took over as licensee. Friday the 14th October 2016 current Manager Gary Curtin, staff and patrons celebrated the pub’s 115th Birthday. Gary said,”We had around 40 people in on Friday night for our 115th birthday celebrations. An extra raffle was held with a cash prize of $115, which was won by Joanna Lowe. There was a good atmosphere, and birthday cake was given out to all those in the bar.”

3.

“We also have accomodation available for visitors to town. Currently the hotel has 10 rooms available, 7 single rooms, and 3 doubles. A single costs $40 per night and a double $50. For longer stays, we can offer a large discount on this.” Gary said. Meal times are 11.30am – 2pm for lunch every day, 5pm – 8pm Sunday – Thursday and 5pm – 8.30pm on Friday and Saturday for dinner. We serve pizzas all day, every day. Function room hire is available at no cost, and we have a function menu that we can provide for specific occasions.

SUPERhero Fundraiser

Bo’s Our Boy

There is certainly no shortage of Superheros in Mount Morgan! This was evident at the successful fundraiser held recently at the Grand Hotel on Saturday 8th October. Thanks to the great support from Mount Morgan businesses and community, Feelgood Promotions and the Grand Hotel raised $1,373 for the Mount Morgan Multi-Purpose Centre. Thirty four prizes were on offer for the Multi Draw Raffle and attendees enjoyed hot and cold finger food, pizza, music and a great time.

My own mission to become healthy and fit started just three years ago. I was just seventeen, skinny, unhealthy, smoked and drank regularly and couldn’t run 1km to save my life. I was extremely unhappy with myself so I turned to eating healthy and exercise. Just three short years later I have gained over 25kg of lean muscle mass, am healthier than I’ve ever been and recently just took second place in the junior division at the Queensland titles in the National Australia Body Building Association.

Feelgood Promotions Proprietor Mark Ricks and Gary Curtin Manager of the Grand Hotel presented Director of Nursing Gordon Luck with the cheque. “This will be used for equipment, and is greatly appreciated”, Gordon said. “Thank you to all the businesses and people in the community that helped us raise the funds” Mark said.

I am setting out to help influence the community of Mount Morgan to get together and work on breaking bad habits and changing their lives for the better. I am now a qualified personal trainer and am also certified to give advice on nutrition, so, I have decided to dedicate my Saturday Mornings to sharing my advice and knowledge at a boot camp. Every weekend we will be at the picnic area at the Dam at 7am with music playing, supervision for the kids, healthy post workout treats to enjoy after a fun 45-minute workout. Cost is only $10 each and the funds raised will go towards furthering my education to be able to continue growing and changing people’s lives. If you are unhappy, unhealthy, have low self-esteem or simply just want get out and have some fun, I would love for you to come along Saturday and take the first step on your own fitness journey. See you there! Bo Passmore.

Mount Morgan Primary School

SES Cent Sale

Mount Morgan Central State School recently participated in a Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. This is a national incentive that uses the raised money to assist the Heart Foundation in conducting valuable research into heart problems in Australia. As a result of the jump off, Mount Morgan Primary managed to raise an amazing $3825 to go towards this worthwhile cause. The school’s Jump Rope co-ordinator and PE teacher, Denis McKay, was impressed with the result. “The students were enthusiastic in their approach to not only the skipping but also the collection of sponsorships. As usual the Mount Morgan community dug deep to support a cause they saw as important,” Mr McKay said. “Once again our little community showed it has a big heart.” Nearly 170 students participated on the day, which involved a variety of short and long rope skipping activities.

Happy Birthday Pat! Family and friends celebrated Pat Ballard’s 80th Birthday party at his eldest daughter Katrina and her husband Vivien Ridgelands home on Sunday the 8th October. Pat was very happy to see close family and friends there on his special day.

SES Week was kicked off in Mount Morgan with the local SES group holding a cent sale with hundreds of prizes on offer. Information brochures on what to do in an emergency/severe weather event were also made available to all who attended. We would like to thank the members of the public who supported the afternoon, the business houses that donated towards the cent sale and the multidraw raffle, the SES members for making themselves available to assist and especially Melissa Sealy for organising the cent sale. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and took home at least one prize! Don’t forget to check out the SES Week display set up in the White Elephant Burger Bar. Thank you to Storm Coughran for organising this and to Carol for the use of the space in her shop.

Our SES volunteers contribute many hours not only operationally but behind the scene requirements, some which include training. The volunteers are required to remain competent in all qualifications that they have which means in a small community like ours, the members hold many qualifications which means more work to remain current. Then there is administrative, planning and public education requirements of our group this also is very time consuming and takes up many hours of behind the scene work.

The Leichhardt Hotel, through their social club has donated $1000.00 to the local SES Branch, to help them in providing the Mount Morgan Community the vital services that they provide. The SES conduct their weekly draws every Friday Night at the Pub, where they raise funds for the service. Recently the Social Club donated $500.00 to the Aged Like many organisations, fundraising plays an Care Facility at the local Hospital and are aiming to important role, SES is no different.. Wildlife Matters By Trish Mathers - Phone 04005 91504

The Orange Dot Movie Review

By Larry at Fox Video

Two Academy Award winners, Tim Robbins and Benicio Del Toro come together to lead you into a crazy world where the inane and the profound, the joyful and the apocalyptic, the sublime and the ridiculous all co-exist simultaneously; and must be negotiated every day.

This time of the year is what wildlife carers call ‘birdnapping season’. Far too many baby birds come into care when they should not have. Quite often the wildlife carer only has to take them back home to be re-united with their anxious parents. Try to visualise this: fully feathered but with short tail and flight feathers bird-child stands on the edge of a very overcrowded nest and thinks ‘this flying caper looks real easy’; leaps off and promptly free-falls to the ground. At this point the bird-child isn’t lost or an orphan. The parents will know where it is and continue to feed it. In a short time, its sibling nest mates will join it. If it is not sick or injured, please leave it where it is! If it is in danger then move it to a safe location, in a nearby branch. Only rescue the baby if it is sick, injured or abandoned. Keep an eye out for the parents if you suspect the baby has been abandoned, if they don’t come near it for over a few hours, then it probably needs rescuing. Remember, the parent birds probably have three or four kids running in different directions that they have to keep an eye on.

A PERFECT DAY is funny, emotional and intriguing...A darkly humorous comedy about the absurdities of war. In an armed conflict zone, a body has been thrown into a well to contaminate and cut off the water supply to the local population. Was it to drive out the locals? OR to force the opposition fighters to move on? Or perhaps it was just business-the water-dealer from down the road drumming up some extra sales at exorbitant prices? However, circumstances soon turn the simple task of retrieving the body into an impossible mission.

A group of aid workers criss-cross the frenzied landscape like guinea pigs in a maze, and there may be no way out. In the event that you do rescue a baby bird, do not give A war inside another war in which the prime enemy is it food or water. At the most you may wet the tip of your irrationality. finger and put it on the bird’s beak so it can only get one drop of water at a time Birds have their airway under The group must outsmart the UN petty bureaucrats with their tongue and they are very easy to drown. You may their arbitrary demarcations of duties, the military, a feed it if you know what species it is and have the correct particularly angry dog, the absence of rope, dangerous food on hand, otherwise phone a vet or wildlife carer for reclining cows and local criminals to resolve this humanitarian crisis...and they are only human. advice Humour, drama, madness, tenderness, routine, danger, hope; it all fits into A PERFECT DAY. Given a four-star rating by both The New York Daily News and the Western Australian, A PERFECT DAY is rated M for “Mature themes and coarse language”, and is one hour and forty entertaining minutes in a very different world. Bidgerdii ‘s Breast Cancer Morning Tea

11.

In Mick’s Memory Submitted by Karin Blake

Ingredients for the Cake: 6 tablespoons of butter or margarine 2/3 cup of caster sugar 2 eggs Vanilla essence 200 mls of milk 2 cups of self raising flour Pinch of salt

On Friday the 14th October, we celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness with a morning tea. We had women of all ages attend from throughout the community. Together we enjoyed some yummy food, great company and small art projects. Everyone went home with a prize from the raffle or games we played. Thanks to Emma from CQID who brought along extra food, so we were very spoiled for choice. Breast Screen Rockhampton should also receive a thank you for giving us information which we could pass on to the ladies about how to access their services, what the procedure involves and why it’s so important to have it done. A very big thank you to all the ladies who came along for the morning. For people who say they aren’t very artistic, the reception area looks terrific! The variety of designs, from the same simple base materials, it’s well worth the effort! I look forward to our future endeavours together!

Ingredients for the Icing: 1 ½ cups of icing sugar 3 to 4 tablespoons of cocoa Boiling water Vanilla Coconut Method – CAKE Beat butter or margarine and sugar to a creamy consistency, add vanilla, add eggs, one at a time and beat well. Sift flour and salt together. Add flour and milk alternately and mix lightly into a soft dough. Turn into a greased and floured shallow square or oblong tin. Bake in a moderate oven for about half an hour. When quite cold cut into squares of uniform size. Method - Icing Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Blend cocoa with a little boiling water. Work into the icing sugar, adding more water if necessary and then add vanilla. Dip each cake into the icing then roll in the coconut. Set aside to become firm.

I found that when you make these once you have cut the cake into the squares that you use one of those beetroot holders that you can buy from Tupperware, As you place them on the insert and then lower it into the mixture. I found this to be the quickest way of coating them with the chocolate.

Mount Morgan Golf Club Over the recent school holidays we have had players performing well at Opens around our region, and it is fantastic to see not only great local support for the Golf Club, but also representation on a broader scale. The Golf Club, as with most of our local clubs, is a Not For Profit organization, completely run by volunteers, from the grounds keeping through to the catering. Monies raised are injected back into the community, but this would not be possible without the support of members and locals who use our facilities and support our activities. We have some wonderful local sponsors at Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop, IGA and Tom Leyden Tyre and Mechanical, so with Christmas season sneaking up on us , we thought we would give them a shout out, and encourage everyone to shop and celebrate locally! Also a big thankyou to the Golden Mount Festival Committee for their sponsorship of our Juniors, it really is contributing to some tangible improvements for them. Coming up – Saturday 5th November - Rodeo Association Fundraiser Golf Day, 2 person Ambrose competition teeing off at 9am. $15 per person with lunch included. All are welcome. Happening’s at the Historical Railway Complex.

Thursday 13th October was a busy day at the Railway Complex with 27 visitors from the Yeppoon Senior Citizens Association Inc stopping in after their TMC Town & Mine Tour. The group enjoyed a cold luncheon on the platform. The Club has approximately 160 members and this was their third trip to Mount Morgan. Shirley Veach President of the Association said, “Every month we take a trip away and we decided to come to Mount Morgan again as some of our new members hadn’t been to this venue before. Every February and November we have a free BBQ for members however our trips away are open to everyone.” “Every year we also take a big tour with Rod North Coaches and last year we went to Maryborough, Bundaberg and Harvey Bay for 7 days. Next year we will be touring the Gulf including Normanton and will do the Silver Bullet, Savana Lander Cobble gauge, which will be a 12-day trip and anyone is welcome to join us,” Shirley said. The Yeppoon Senior Citizens Association meet monthly at the Yeppoon Town Hall and have their own Line Dancing Group and their own band with bass, lead and rhythm guitars and drums all played by retired professional musicians. Vice President is Joan Vollmer, Secretary Helen Cusack and Darryl Veach is the club Treasurer. If anyone would like further information on their upcoming 2017 tour contact Shirley on 49 393625. Great entertainment was provided by Trish & Greg Mathers Wildlife Carers. Friday 30th September the St. George & Sutherland Ulysses Club called in to the Railway Complex on their “Longer Thursday Ride”. The club has approximately 26,000 members with Junior members aged up to 40 years and seniors 50 and over. The seven motorcycle riders travelled up from Sydney through Roma, Emerald and into Rockhampton where they stayed for 3 nights and will make their way back to Sydney arriving on Friday. The name Ulysses comes from a poem of the same title by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It tells the tale of the great Greek hero Ulysses, now middle-aged and securely in charge of his kingdom of Ithaca, who is becoming bored in retirement and longs to go adventuring again with his shipmates of old. It describes very well the sort of person who still has enough spark to go on riding into middle and later years.
