This time we return to a little more history of our famous Mine and possibly not a well-known area. In 1882 the policy of the original syndicate and the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company was to make full use of bricks for buildings. In the first 45 years of the Mine’s history there were four brickworks which manufactured many thousands of first class bricks. The first brickworks was built about 1885 and the bricks were used in what was called the “Lower Works” building and part of that building is still standing and known as the Old Gold Room. So many bricks were required for foundry, saw mill, power station smoke stacks, etc that a second brickworks was established in 1895. This brickwork was known as the “brick manufactory”. At this time 45 brick makers and 56 brick layers were employed. With the construction of No 3 brickworks near Linda Gulley this allowed No 2 brickworks to manufacture fire bricks only. The no 4 was constructed on the right hand side of the Dee River adjacent to the Railway station. This plant kept working until the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. went into liquidation in 1927. Of course the discovery of the “clay pits” with the fireclay deposit was used extensively in the manufacture of the bricks. Today of course they are noted for the dinosaur footprints that are located on the ceiling. Over the years and after much experimenting with the local bricks the standard obtained was equal to the best English bricks manufactured. Mount Morgan bricks were manufactured in various colours from light pink to dark red, all shades of brown, white bricks, yellow bricks, and to the joy of the vast Irish community, a green brick. As we look around our town today we see the result of these skilled brick makers and layers in buildings that were constructed with Mount Morgan bricks. The General Office, our High School, the Masonic Hall, Church of England and all these buildings are over one hundred years old and still are stately and in excellent condition. The National Trust classified four of our brick structures namely, The Gold Room, General Office, Assay Stack and last but not least our famous land mark, The Big Stack. These buildings are silent reminders of the techniques and skill of bygone years. It was a unique feature that the bricks were impressed with “MMGMCo” (pictured below). Maybe you have a souvenir brick in your collection as many other buildings were constructed with these bricks. This information was taken from a paper written by the late Mr Frank Cunningham, Engineer MML.

Flipside Circus returns to Mt Morgan

3

Flipside Circus, Queensland’s premier youth circus has returned to Mount Morgan to treat local students to the full circus experience … and this certainly doesn’t mean being a member of the audience.

The visit is the second time Flipside has worked with students from Mount Morgan Primary; last year seeing trainers and the students put on their own show for the community.

Mount Morgan Primary School students have been learning how to juggle, tumble and even fly on trapeze thanks to the exciting project.

This year will see a number of students present their newly acquired skills at the Village Festival in Yeppoon, held later this month.

Flipside Circus has been conducting workshops with students over the past fortnight; seeing students work with trainers during part of the school day.

The project is a partnership between Creative Capricorn, Keppel Coast Arts and Flipside Circus and has received additional funding from Festivals Australia.

Rockhampton Regional Councillor for Division 5, Cr Cherie Rutherford said that the workshops went beyond learning circus skills.

Pictured: Cr Cherie Rutherford, Keanna Martin, Shellby Evans, Janaya Bray and Zane Smith at the Circus workshops, School of Arts Hall.

“The visits of Flipside Circus to Mount Morgan not only promotes the development of performance skills but also emphasizes keeping healthy through exercise and healthy food choices.” “Students gain confidence, make friends and develop some pretty impressive skills,” she said. One of the students joining in on the workshops is Shellby Evans, who says she has enjoyed every minute. “I love Flipside Circus,” Shellby said. “I like the warm-ups at the start, and the mini tramp and the trapeze. I have liked learning new things and meeting people who have come a long way to teach us things.”

Mount Morgan Central celebrates Literacy and Numeracy Week - “The Big Read” Fairies, princesses, witches, Harry Potter, Ben 10, Tough Boris, Annie, cowboys, bushrangers plus assorted animals transformed the front lawn of our school last Wednesday. Amongst this sea of colour were books, books, and more books! Books were being read and shared by all staff and all students. Our other special visitors were the children from our B4-Learner program, Kindy Care and Red Frog. The day was a recognition and celebration of the importance of reading, it’s fun and it’s preparation for the future. Aritcle and photos supplied.

Mitigation burn-off proves a success

Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success Mitigation burn proves a success

A large scale mitigation burn was carried out in Mount Morgan earlier this month, as a proactive approach to reduce the risk of fire ahead of the upcoming bushfire season. Ideal weather conditions on Saturday, August 3, allowed the scheduled burn to go ahead; seeing around 100 hectares of vegetation burnt as part of the operation. The day saw personnel from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Queensland Parks and Wildlife, Rural Fire Service Queensland, Rockhampton Regional Council, and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service combine to provide a force of more than 27 fire appliances, tankers, and a helicopter to contain the fire within control lines. Their efforts resulted in a successful wildfire fuel reduction over a significant part of the Mount Morgan township. Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Izone Officer, Les Williams paid tribute to the huge efforts of all personnel through all stages of planning and implementation. “Although the Incident Controller on the day (Neale Dunphy) came from Rural Fire Service Queensland and there were a significant number of volunteer personnel who came from that agency, the only way a burn of that size could proceed in such a high risk area was through the joint agency approach with each agency providing personnel with their individual skills.” Station Officer Williams also highlighted that while there has been significant risk reduction to many properties, particularly on the Eastern side of the town, the area is not completely safe from wildfires. Residents are encouraged to be cautious in the lead up to fire season in following all fire regulations. “Burn-offs have to be well planned, well resourced, and a fire permit must first be obtained by the local fire warden, who will check preparations are satisfactory before issuing the permit,” Mr Williams said. Residents are also encouraged to participate in helping to make their community safer from unwanted fires by reporting any suspicious activity to police. In 2012 there were a large number of deliberately lit fires in Mount Morgan which risked the lives and property of residents, and risked the safety of personnel from the agencies that combined to fight the fires. Public notice- Rail bridge Since the Mount Morgan Railbridge was damaged during ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald in January, Council has been working towards its repair. An Industrial Special Risk claim was submitted and the bridge was assessed by Council’s WH&S team as unsafe. To address this a safety fence containment area was erected for public safety.

A structural engineering assessment has been commissioned and is currently being performed. This assessment is needed in order for Council to establish what can and needs to be done to protect the bridge from further damage as we work towards a complete repair. Council thanks the community for its patience as work progresses on the remedial actions required for the restoration of the bridge.

Public noticeByrnes Parade Bridge Council is undertaking major repairs to the swinging pedestrian bridge in Mount Morgan in the coming weeks. The bridge, which is used for access from Byrnes Parade on the northern side to Dee Esplanade on the southern side of the Dee River, will be closed to all users for at least two weeks while Council replaces most of the decking timbers and all of the supporting bearers and joists. Works are planned to begin 27 August 2013.

The Mount Morgan Showgrounds was packed with plenty of action, animals and amusements on Saturday, as the area played host to the 15th annual Mount Morgan Agricultural Show. Perfect weather brought the crowds, who enjoyed a range of entertainment, from show jumping and cattle events to stilt walking and dodgems. The event kicked off at 6:30am with a breakfast for the early risers, followed by the opening of horse and cattle and events, pavilions, and sideshow alley. The day came to a close with the annual and ever impressive fireworks display at 7pm. With the day now all wrapped up for another year, the Committee thank all who supported the event.

Impressive heights: Stilt walkers were among the day’s roving entertainment.

“On behalf of the Show Committee, I sincerely thank all who came along and took part on the day,” Mount Morgan Show Committee President, Brian Glover said. “It was a successful day and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Attendee numbers were up from the previous year and the entertainment was first class.” “A sincere thank you to all of our entertainers, sponsors, competitors, judges and volunteers for their tireless efforts and great support.” Winner of the event’s lucky gate prize – (a new TV and home theatre package, sponsored by Ramm’s Bi-Rite Electrical), was Shirley Gent. For full listing of event and competition winners, see the Community Notice Board (Morgan Street) in the upcoming week.

Poultry and bird exhibits were also part of the day’s lineup – with a number of Champion and Grand Champion awards presented. Pictured is Jane Cocketon with Barney - champion soft feather large.

Cracking up: Along with the traditional favourites, this year’s Show also welcomed an exciting new act thanks to the ever-entertaining Crack Up Sisters. The delightful duo proved a highlight of the day with their witty and impressive routines.

Furred and feathered friends: Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm proved a hit among young showgoers. Pictured: Darius Jacobson gets a warm welcome. Fun in the sun: Izabella Darwin enjoying the day.

Members of the Mount Morgan 5th Light Horse Regiment Troop have celebrated the official opening of their new depot, The Gloria Crosbie Depot, at the Mount Morgan Showgrounds. The official opening was conducted by Acting Mayor, Councillor Tony Williams and Division 5 Representative, Councillor Cherie Rutherford on Saturday, as part of the 2013 Mount Morgan Agricultural Show. The troop’s new 6 X 6 metre shed, was completed by the Rockhampton Regional Council earlier this year and was given its official name by the Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop in March; in memory of a much loved trooper and local resident . “Gloria Crosbie was a valued member of our group and the local community,” Troop secretary, Ron Stehn said. “It was a privilege to have Gloria a part of our Troop, and we have dedicated the new building to her memory.” Gloria’s involvement with the Mount Morgan Light Horse Troop began when it was formed in the year 2000. Gloria became the Troop’s Treasurer in the same year – a position which she held until her passing in November of last year. During the twelve years with the troop, Gloria made an inspiring impact; not only working tirelessly to build a strong financial base, but also taking part in a range of the troop’s activities. The troop members said that Saturday’s official opening was the culmination of an important project for the troop – instigated by Gloria. “It was through Gloria, together with her partner Jock Preston’s efforts, that we have this depot today.”

“Working with Council, they were able to highlight the need for a new facility and what we have today is just ideal.” Although an exciting day for the Troop, the group said the ceremony proved bitter-sweet; with Gloria’s partner and Troop member, Jock Preston unable to attend on the day. “Sadly Jock was unable to attend this event due to surgery,” Ron said. “He would have loved to have been here and been a part of it. We look forward to showing him how the displays look though.” The depot will now be used by members of the Troop to display Light Horse memorabilia and will also serve as a dedicated training and lecture venue. The year was 1961: the Rockhampton Liberty Theatre was hosting a music concert and among the evening’s attendees was Boudercombe boy, Ivan Young. Gazing the crowd, Ivan spots Baree resident Valma Hayes; a girl he knew a little… and liked a lot. Not having the courage to approach her himself, Ivan sends a friend into the Hall on his behalf, to ask Valma on a date. Today, more than five decades on, the couple are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. After two years of dating, Ivan and Valma were married in Mount Morgan’s Presbyterian Church on the 17th of August, 1963. Ivan worked in the Railway until 1967, when he went to work for the Mount Morgan Mine until its closure. Ivan, who is now retired, then spent the rest of his working days running the boiler at the Mount Morgan Hospital. Val was the house maker during Ivan’s years of work. She has earned the reputation as a great cook - something Ivan loves... What’s that saying about food being the key to a man’s heart?… Ivan was known in his younger days for his fast cars and the love of speedway, and Val jokes that he took a while to tame. The couple set up a home in Baree shortly after they married and have since moved closer to Mount Morgan’s township. Ivan and Val have two daughters- Leanne and Kylie, and four grandchildren. Congratulations Ivan and Valma! Pictured (top): Ivan and Valma on their wedding day, August 17, 1963. Pictured right: Ivan and Valma fifty years on, August 2013.

Birthday celebrations for the Mt Morgan Laurel Club

Earlier this month the Mount Morgan Laurel Club had the privilege of celebrating a special milestone of one of our members. On Thursday the 1st of August, our club celebrated the 90th birthday of Mrs Elaine Dingwall (nee Malcolm). The club provided morning tea and cake in celebration of Elaine’s birthday, held as part of the club’s meeting. Elaine was born in the Mount and as a child lived on East Street Extended before her family made a move to a farm in Stuck Oil. Elaine later moved to Rockhampton, where she continues to reside today. Elaine travels to Mount Morgan for every monthly meeting of the Laurel Club, with Ruth Gardner (Pension’s office) and Joe Doyle (Legatee). Elaine will officially celebrate her birthday later this month, on Thursday the 29th.

Hi folks, We hope that you have all been hearing about and perhaps even been experiencing Random Acts of Kindness! Things have certainly been moving ahead for this local program, with many residents taking the opportunity to make someone’s day.

A recent Anonymous project:

Here is an update on some of the exciting and recent progression of Anonymous Friends- Random Acts of Kindness.

It was amazing to see the response of the families who received the hampers. They were touched by the generosity showed from Mount Morgan stores. It was also encouraging to see how participating stores banded together and gave towards the hampers so generously. Great job everyone!

So what is “Random Acts of Kindness” ?...

We consider Random Acts of Kindness-Anonymous Friends® as a customer incentive program… with a difference. The program, developed by Feel Good Promotions, was introduced to the community by local resident, Mark Ricks during November, 2012. In a nutshell, shops adopt this program within their stores and by doing so; allow their customers the opportunity to do a Random Act of Kindness by paying forward an item for a following unsuspecting customer.

Random Acts of Kindness in the community:

Since November last year, Mount Morgan residents began experiencing an influx in giving when twelve local stores trialed the Anonymous Friends-Random Acts of Kindness customer incentive program. Since its initiation, another thirty stores from around the district have come aboard to help make someone’s day, with some surprising and heartwarming results.

Mount Morgan participating stores recently got together and created six hampers (two pictured below) that were given away as Random Acts of Kindness. They were gifted to families in Mount Morgan, Gracemere and Rockhampton.

Recent promotion:

We have been really excited about the media coverage that the programme has attracted of late. The programme has attracted a lot of regional media attention from local radio stations, ABC radio and SeaFM as well as featuring on Win Local News and in newspapers “The Morning Bulletin” and “The Rocky Mirror”. We are also very excited to announce that the official website of Random Acts of Kindness-Anonymous Friends is set to be launched in the upcoming weeks! This will allow businesses throughout Australia the opportunity to come aboard and make a positive change in their own community. Keep an eye out for the changes to: www.anonymousfriends.com.au

Over the past months, the program has seen a range of items paid forward – ranging from bread to coffee and even fuel. Monetary amounts are also something that are being paid forward in the community - with one local resident receiving $50 off her grocery total at IGA supermarket. Simply look for the Random Acts of Kindness logo in stores and ask about how you too can pay something forward.

Calling all JPs (Qual) and C. Dec’s Since its establishment in 2001, Mount Morgan’s Footbridge Corner has offered a range of services and programs in aim of supporting the local community; from a Centrelink Agent to Tax Help, and even a community garden. The Footbridge team are now looking to further expand their service to the area with hope of becoming an official JP Signing Centre. The team are calling on all local JP (Qual) and C.Dec personnel, or those interested in becoming one, to become involved and help see these plans come into fruition. The project is looking for interested individuals to assist with this project one morning a month. For further details on how you can become part of the project, please contact Diane at the Footbridge Corner on 49381199 between 9am - 12pm or phone: 0419726780. ...From your State MP There has been much discussion of the issue of Ergon Energy depot closures and I am writing to assure Residents and businesses in Mirani electorate that the Newman Government has not made any decisions about depots. On 16 June 2013, the Newman Government released its response to the Queensland Government’s response to the Inter Departmental Committee (IDC) on Electricity Sector Reform. There has been a lot of speculation by vested-interest groups and the ETU since the release of the report and I would like to clarify some vital points in relation to this issue: •The Newman Government has not given any instructions to close regional Ergon depots. •No changes to Ergon Energy depots will occur without consultation and discussions with staff, which are currently being undertaken by Ergon Energy. •The Government welcomes mature debate on these issues and believes strongly that Queenslanders are a definitive part of the decision-making process, through proper and meaningful consultation. The report is available on the Departmental website at www.dews.qld.gov.au. Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme The Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme means that all eligible deaf and hearing impaired people can afford to keep themselves and their families safe. Funded by the Queensland Department of Community Safety, the scheme is available to eligible people throughout Queensland and makes specialised smoke alarms available at a fraction of the cost. If you would like more information contact Deaf Services Queensland (07) 3892 8500 or TTY (07) 3892 8501 or email smokealarms@deafsq.org.au Licence Reforms for Older Drivers Currently, drivers aged 75 and over must carry a medical certificate at all times, which may be issued for a few months or for up to five years. However from 1st January 2014, when you need a new medical certificate it will only be valid for a maximum of 12 months.

Calling all members of the community: Love the Golden Mount Festival? Interested in the volunteering some time to the local area? Looking for something new to do? We would love to welcome you to be a part of our team! The Golden Mount Festival Committee are still looking for new members. If you are interested in getting involved, please join us at our next meeting (held on August 20 at the Golden Nugget Hotel. Alternatively, if you would like further details, please contact the Committee’s Secretary, John Tuxworth: 04290 55165. We already have 22 members for you to meet. Committee Executive: Following our previous update, we have since welcomed another executive member to our committee. Local resident, Jim Lynch joins our group, and takes up the position of Treasurer (with the position previously held by our Secretary). Updates on planning: During the last two weeks, we have had a meeting with a Rockhampton business group in aim of seeing support provided for the 2014 Festival. The meeting went well and our proposal will be put to the group’s committee meeting in the near future. We are looking for a positive outcome and look forward to providing you with this update. Members of our committee have also recently met with staff from Capricorn Enterprise. We found this meeting to be very constructive, and look forward to implementing their advice for the festival’s preparations. We are currently working on grant applications as well as other fundraising ideas. Speaking of fundraising, we are endeavouring to change the format of our weekly raffle, which are so wonderfully supported by the Mount Morgan community, by seeking sponsorship for prizes. We have approached some other groups with the idea of holding events in the lead up to the May weekend, in aim of raising funds for the festival. We look forward to bringing you further details on this. Upcoming events: On the 19th of August, two of our committee members will be attending a conference in Yeppoon, at their own expense. This event is a meet and greet and is sure to provide a great opportunity for us to talk to senior figures within the Queensland Tourism Industry Council – who are recognised as the premier tourism body in Queensland. They are also major sponsors for our Golden Mount Festival.

If, on the 1st January, you have a medical certificate which doesn’t expire for some years, you will still be able to use this. When it expires, your new certificate will then be valid for up to 12 months.

For a fun time and great prizes: Are you interested in entering the Mount Morgan King and Queen Formal Fundraising Ball! This event is open to male and female entrants, aged 16 – 110. The King and Queen will be crowned on the Friday evening of the May Day weekend.

For further information, phone Queensland Transport on 13 23 80.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a joint Queensland Government and Rockhampton Regional Council partnership to support local arts and culture.

The days are getting long and hot for this time of year and Winter seems like it’s gone. So here is my “Mountain Mick’s All In Quiche”: this one is pork sausages, bacon, onion, mushrooms and black olives, garlic with parsley, sage, thyme, salt and pepper, plain flour with Mozzarella cheese on top. Now I can hear you say “but where is the pastry base?”… well believe it or not, that plain flour in the egg mix will settle on the bottom and make a lovely light pastry base.

Shopping list: • 2 tsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 200g bacon, in short, thin strips • 6 button mushrooms • 6 pork sausage (pre-cooked) • 20 pitted black olives halved • 6 eggs • 1 clove of crushed garlic • parsley • ½ teaspoon dried sage • ½ teaspoon dried Thyme • good pinch of cayenne pepper • a pinch of salt • good pinch of black or white pepper • ¾ cup (185ml) cream • ½ cup (125ml) milk • 1 cup plain flour • ½ cup Mozzarella cheese • ⅓ cup (30g) shredded Parmesan

Method: Preheat oven to 190°C. Now into a large baking tray (35cm X 25cm X 2.5cm), spread the diced onions, mushrooms and bacon. Cut the sausages up into 20mm chunks and add also. Now sprinkle herbs and garlic. Next, whisk eggs, cream and milk together with the flour. Pour over the filling then sprinkle over the Parmesan. Bake for 30 minutes. Now sprinkle the Mozzarella cheese over and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown. Serve hot with mash or veggies or as part of a picnic with Summer salad. I would serve an ice cold apple juice or a Chai Tea with this spring/summer feast. Enjoy!
