This edition we have branched out into another theme and we have left our “Snippets of History” for a later time. The following article came to us by email from America and although no author’s name was mentioned we enjoyed the message and the different method of presentation. We hope you enjoy it also.
The Train Journey
At birth we bordered the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel by our side. However at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on our journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train: and they will be significant: that is, our siblings, friends, children and even the love of your life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don’t realize they have vacated their seat. The train ride will be full of joy, sorry, fantasy, expectation, hellos and goodbyes and farewells. Our success consists of having good relationships with the other passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down from the train. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat vacant we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the Train of Life. We wish you a joyful journey on the Train of Life, reaping success and giving lots of love and to be very thankful for the journey. Hope you enjoyed this the three members of Pride did. Now with the wonderful Show behind us we look forward to the celebrations of Wattle Day and the fun at the Big Dam. How beautiful the wattle in bloom and yet we have had very little rain and heavy frosts. Nature is quite remarkable. Also plans will be made for another free cuppa with the Range View. Watch the Argus for dates. Mount Morgan may be a small community but it never seems to lack activity with things to see, do and enjoy. Thanks to the many small bands of workers in many organizations who willingly give their time and talents to the community. Think Clean – Be Tidy use the bins and everyone will be happy.

Supporting a service that supports thousands across the country
More than $1,300 has been donated to the Lifeline Suicide Prevention Service, thanks to a local fundraiser held earlier this month. The sum was raised through a family fun night, held at the Community Services Hall on August 2nd. The event was hosted by the staff of the local Lifeline store, who said they were eager to raise awareness and funds for the service. “We wanted to be able to give the service a little boost so we decided to hold a fun night in aim of raising funds for this wonderful cause,” Lifeline Mount Morgan team member Di Coburn said.
Local ladies: Lifeline, Mount Morgan members: Tanya Stodart, Doris Tremaine, Di Coburn, Jenny Kluft and Karen Adams.
“There aren’t many people who haven’t been affected or know of someone who has been affected by suicide and this kind of service offers support to anyone needing it, 24 hours a day.” Di said the idea of hosting the fundraiser was met with huge support from the community. “In the lead up, a number of businesses in town, as well as clubs and members of the community donated prizes for a mutlidraw held on the evening. We also had monetary donations for Lifeline, from those who were unable to attend on the night.” For those who were able to attend, the event included an evening of dancing and live entertainment – kindly supplied free of charge by a number of local musicians. Di said a huge thanks goes from the organisers to all for their support.
All smiles: Heather Quarry with Tasmanian residents, Donna and Stephen Triffitt.
“One behalf of our team, a very big thank you to everyone who attended, attributed their time and supported the night.” “It was a great evening and it was wonderful to see so many eager to help raise funds.” A total of $1,302 was raised. The sum has since been donated to Lifeline Crisis and Suicide Prevention Service, and will assist their continued efforts in providing 24 hour support. About Lifeline support: Lifeline was founded more than five decades ago by Sir Alan Walker, after he received a call from a distressed man, who later committed suicide. Sir Alan launched the 24 hour (131114) Crisis Line, established to offer support to those in need, 24 hours a day. Since being founded in 1963, the line answers around 1,800 calls daily. If you need crisis support, call 13 11 14 now.
Stepping out: Locals Trish and Greg Mathers kick up their heels.

Showgoers couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather last Saturday. Close on 1,800 people enjoyed a blue sky and a bustling showgrounds for the 16th annual Mount Morgan Agricultural Show. The Show Committee promised something for everyone at this year’s event, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. The programme included everything from craft exhibits to camel rides. The day kicked off at a slightly chilly 6.30am, with a big breakfast and the Secretary’s Office opening for event nominations. The majority of the morning’s crowd held off until after however, with the entire grounds opened from 8am.
Fun in the sun: Melissa Buckton and Will and Sarah Bendall were among the crowd of happy showgoers last Saturday.
There was plenty of action over in the Rodeo Arena, with a range of cattle events. Above Champion female, small breed: Crimson Park Hana, led by Coby Mitchell.
Horse sports were also in no short supply this year, with a variety of ages keen to try for a blue ribbon. Pictured above: Olivia Dobson getting ready for the Junior Handler challenge. Pictured left: Sarah Laxton taking up the show jumping event.

In the pavilions, locals showed and shared their talents through the range of competitions and exhibits. This year’s categories included gardening, cooking, ceramics, craft, photography and art. Among the winners was local resident Marie Chopping (pictured), who took out top placings in the garden category for her roses.
Showgoers were able to get up close and personal with a few furred and feathered friends during the day thanks to a visit from Johnson Park’s Petting Zoo and Mobile Animal Farm. Pictured above is Keely Smith. Poultry and bird exhibits were also part of the day’s lineup with a number of Champion and Grand Champion awards presented. Pictured below is Grand Champion winner in the caged bird cateogory, Clarry Horan. Pictured second below is local resident and judge for the caged bird event, Mick Blake with proud winners Dean Rothery and Rodney Gardiner.
There was even the chance for attendees’ pets to join in on the fun, with the Show’s annual pet parade. Among the winners was local resident, Abbie Tyne who won first prize in the Cute and Cuddly category with her guinea pig Shelley.

by Trish & Greg Mathers This issue we continue our article on ‘Wildlife Rescue’:
August has started with a bang for many of gardeners with perfect weather just in time for the Garden Competition. Unfortunately a number of gardens in Mount Morgan are still suffering the recent frosts. If your plants have been damaged by frost in the last month, the damaged foliage and branches should be left until early spring before pruning. The damaged growth can act as protection against further frost damage. Pruning will just encourage new growth which is lush, tender and susceptible to further frost damage. Winter months are lazy months in the garden but watering is still important. Watering your garden during August should be done in the morning if possible. This will give the ground a chance to warm up and the foliage to dry off before nightfall and less chance of developing fungus and disease problems. Your expectations for glorious blossoms on your shrubs, plants and bulbs in the spring will not be met unless you are consistent in your watering now. Many plants resent long dry spells and show poor results in the spring. While your garden will only need about 1/4 of the water it needs during summer, it will still make a difference! BULB HINTS • Spring flowering bulbs are just beginning to bloom. • But don’t be tempted to cut off the bulb foliage after the bulb finishes blooming. • Cut off the spent flower heads but not the foliage. • The foliage continues to feed the bulb as the bulb forms the embryo of next year’s flower. • Feed the foliage with Blood and Bone or a fertiliser made specifically for bulbs. Pictured: the Gazania Sunshine Hybrid
Bats - do not handle any bat, including flying fox, fruit bat, or
microbat. Call a local wildlife expert or 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) for assistance. A licenced rescuer will have been vaccinated against Lyssavirus. While awaiting assistance, if safe to do so, cover the animal with a cloth to prevent further distress or injury and to protect it from the sun. Do not give the animal any food or water. If you are bitten or scratched wash the wound gently for 5 mins with soap and water and apply iodine solution. Contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately.
Kangaroos & wallabies - Ensure your own safety. A mother
may have a joey in her pouch. Please check first. If a joey is present gently remove and place in a towel or pillowcase or similar. If joey is attached to the teat, gently remove if possible. If firmly attached you will need to cut the teat as close to the mum as possible and leave it in the joeys mouth, and if possible attach a safety pin through the teat to stop joey from swallowing it. If you aren’t comfortable then leave joey in the pouch and take the mum to vet or carer. Stress is a major factor in the death of kangaroos and wallabies. Try to keep the head of any injured animal covered with a towel or blanket. Injured animals can be aggressive so always approach from behind so they can’t kick you. Beware of sharp claws, strong legs and tail and sharp teeth. Call a wildlife carer or council animal control officer. Remove dead animals from the road. Kangaroo and wallaby joeys should be wrapped up and kept warm, especially if furless. A bottle of lukewarm (not hot) water wrapped in a towel can be used, or place them down your shirt if possible. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GIVE THEM ANY FOOD OR WATER. Call a wildlife expert.
Koalas - keep domestic pets away. Koalas have very strong
teeth and claws, so avoid handling the animal. Cover it with something and give it something to hold (a rolled up towel or soft toy). Contact a wildlife carer immediately, or ring 1300 ANIMAL. They have specialised needs and their fate depends on receiving expert attention asap. If dead, check pouch for joey (they have a backward facing pouch). If there is a live joey, please transport the koala with joey still in pouch to nearest vet or wildlife carer.
Possums & Gliders - beware of sharp teeth and claws. Check
if alive. Check for joey in pouch. If mum is dead but joey is live, follow the same method as for kangaroos and wallabies. If an injured adult is found, you can cover it and call for help, or you can pick it up by the base of the tail and scruff of the neck. and secure it. Do not attempt to give the animal food or water. Call a wildlife carer or vet.
Lizards - Never pick up a lizard by the tail. Beware of sharp
teeth, claws and its tail. Contain the injured animal in a box with a lid, or a pillowcase. Do not attempt to give food or water. Contact wildlife carer or vet.
Turtles - if uninjured just leave it alone. If injured pick up
by the sides of its shell and place it in a box, garbage bin or pillowcase. Take to vet or ring wildlife carer.
Find the team who bring you the Argus on Facebook! Search Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated.
Snakes-do not handle any snake unless experienced and
trained. If you find and injured snake then call a snake handler or 1300 ANIMAL. If it is inside the house leave a window or door open as an avenue of escape. Most snake bites are received by people trying to capture or kill it. Snakes usually prefer to retreat.

Mount Morgan High produces some bright sparks Mount Morgan State High School students, Joseph Portch, Kain Campion, Dylan Roberts, Will Holden, Tyler Jones, Nicholas Stock headed off to Brisbane on fully funded scholarships, worth $1500 each, to the Spark Engineering Camp during the first week of the June holidays. The students had a great time living on campus at the University of Queensland. There were only 60 students selected for the Brisbane trip and our students made the most of the activities, industry professionals and the events they participated in. Isobella Rudolph and Paul Blake ventured off to the Melbourne camp, spending a week in sunny Victoria during the second week of the holidays. For our students to obtain 9 positions out of the 100 on offer Australia wide is a fantastic achievement. Thanks to the Spark Engineering Camp organisers as well as sponsors who made this possible for our students.

Hi Argus readers, How great was the Mount Morgan Agricultural Show on Saturday?! This event is always a highlight on our local calendar, and each year it is easy to see why. It was a terrific day, with perfect weather and plenty to see and do. Our Project Officer had a great time taking snaps throughout the day. We also had a promotions tent at this year’s event, with three of our team members chatting to visitors about things to see and do in the Mount. Pictured is one of our lovely volunteers, Melray at our tent on Saturday. Thanks Melray, Marg and Maggie, you did a wonderful job! Hats off to the Mount Morgan Show Society for putting together such a fantastic programme. The event was the fruition of much planning by this hardworking team of volunteers. Congratulations to all involved.

Mountain Mick’s Sexy Southern fried chicken
Your help is needed to solve a genealogy mystery. I feel confident that somewhere in Mount Morgan's treasure trove of memorabilia there will be some information and hopefully photos (that would be like winning the lottery!) of the SMITH family I am researching.
Who doesn’t like Fried Chicken? Yes okay some people may not… well those couple can stop reading now, lol. When watching a YouTube clip the other by a lovely lady in the USA named Diana DeLaFuente. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuU9dPDjZ54
Charles Frederick Smith and his wife Helen came to Mount Morgan in the early 1900s. Charles took up the position of Bank Manager, Queensland National Bank, after long term manager Mr C. Alexander left. I understand that Charles was also an active member of the Mount Morgan community undertaking various roles such as committee member Mt Morgan State School (1903), Justice of the Peace (1905) and committee member on the Hospital Board (1913). His wife Helen also took on an active community role and was President of the Benevolent Society in 1918. I believe the Smith's had 4 children - Charles Vernon (born 1888), Clare Vivienne (born 1890), Elvena May (born 1893) and Claude Eric (born 1895). Like many of Mount Morgan's young men, Claude enlisted in WW1 (5thLH) and set sail for Gallipoli. He survived the horrors of war and returned to Australia in 1920. His whereabouts from then on remain a mystery. Sadly, Charles Frederick committed suicide in 1926 (Rockhampton) after a period of ill health and depression.
She shows how to cook South Fried Chicken, Well I’ve had a play about and tweaked it a bit, and made it my own. So I hope you like it we loved it much better than the Southern Gents Fried Chicken and a lot cheaper. And for it to work you must use “Buttermilk” plain milk, she don’t work, I tried it. Okay have fun. Until next time, it’s the Mountain Mick Blake the Mountain Griller © “Making Cooking Monkey Business” .
Shopping list: • 10 chicken drumsticks • 600 mls butter milk (is enough for double batch) • 3 cups of plain flour • 6 teaspoons spicy chicken seasoning or poultry salt • 3 teaspoons garlic powder • 3 teaspoons onion power • 2 teaspoons sweet paprika • ½ teaspoon black pepper • 2 heaped teaspoons of sage • ½ teaspoon salt
Method:
Firstly, measure ½ of the spices and salts so you end up with 2 equal amounts of these. Now with ½ of the spices and salts cover the chicken drumsticks by massaging and covering them with the spices. Once done, cover them with the buttermilk and allow to sit in the fridge for about 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Mix the remainder of the spices mix and salts into your plain flour. Heat your oil for frying to 160 degrees. Take the drumsticks out of the buttermilk and place them into the flour and cover with the seasoned flour. Place on a place once all of the drum sticks have been coated once. Then put the drumsticks back into the flour mix to make sure you get the whole drumstick cover with the coating. Allow them to sit for about 10 minutes. Deep fry about 160 – 165 degrees either in canola oil, sunflower oil, and olive oil - whichever you prefer to use and deep fry for about 12-15 minutes depending on the size of the drumsticks. If they are small, then 12 minutes is fine but if they are bigger you will need to do them for about 15 minutes or otherwise until golden brown. You can serve your buttermilk southern fried chicken drumsticks with chips or fries, coleslaw homemade of course, or just a fresh salad. In the above photo the Sexy Southern Fried Chicken is with oven chips and chick pea, tomato, avocado and lettuce salad with an olive oil and wholegrain mustard vinaigrette.
If anyone has any information about Claude and/or his family, anything at all, I would love to hear from you. I will be coming to Mount Morgan mid September to explore your historical town and hopefully 'strike family gold'. Pictured right: Could this be Claude Eric? We knew this loving man as Herbert (Billy) Hovendene. With kind regards Linda Doak doak@netspace.net.au M: 0407502220
