After the excitement of the Wendy Matthews Concert and the local Agricultural Show we can now look forward to the fun day at the Big Dam for the Silver Wattle day. No time is lost in Mount Morgan from one great attraction to the next. It is “Snippets of History” time for this edition, and the year is 1966 - when the J.R. Boyes Scout Park at Struck Oil was officially opened and named on Saturday afternoon 5th November by Mr F L Hennessy, General Manager of the Mine at that time. The B G Patterson Chapel was dedicated by Rev Kenyon, Presbyterian Church Minister and the Scout Hut by the then Assistant Commissioner of Boy Scouts, Mr Roberts. From 1966 onwards it was a popular spot for outdoor scouting activities but sadly now with no Scout movement in Mount Morgan the Park is rather neglected. Then in May 1967 on May 27th the town’s first Museum was opened in East Street, opposite the Leichhardt Hotel. Mr George Gray, Federal MP for Capricornia officially opened the Museum. It was managed by the Chamber of Commerce of which Mr. A Rowe was President and Miss Vida Chardon Secretary. Until the Museum was relocated to Morgan Street, it was as the present Museum is a successful tourist attraction. The change in 1967 of the coal handling from the Moura mine to Gladstone by a new rail line saw the down turn of our local Railway Station. Employees lost their jobs and the town’s population decreased. Also in that year saw the formation of the Mount Morgan Advancement committee which sponsored the town’s Back to Mount Morgan Week in 1970. It was also responsible for the “Spring Carnival” in later years. The committee became non active but the Mount Morgan Promotion and Development is doing a wonderful job at present and keeping the town well on the map and with many activities for locals. We will leave our Snippets now as 1968 was a big year so that will happen in a future edition. We hope our wonderful seniors enjoyed all their celebrations in their special week. To finish we will add just a few interesting quotes. Enjoy the little things in life because one day you will look back and realize they were the big things. To handle yourself use your head, to handle others use your heart. Human beings are the only creatures on earth that allow their children to come back home. Think Clean – Be tidy and use the Bins.

Rotary to roll out new community project

The Mount Morgan Skate Park is set to be equipped with some new and rather unique seating in the upcoming months, thanks to the latest project of the Mount Morgan Rotary Club. The local group has recently been successful in obtaining $2,000 worth of funding to introduce and upgrade seating in the local area. And it isn’t set to be just any run-of-the-mill seating. The new installments will be made locally; designed and crafted by a member of the local Rotary club with assistance from the senior students of Mount Morgan State High School. Discussing the project, Mount Morgan club Foundation Director, Del Rowley said the group is looking forward to seeing all commence. “Seating is always something we can use and the skate park was chosen because it could use more. “The design we have in mind is something that has been looked into by one of our members, Andy Johnson. For the skate park, it’s a funky and unique design and is a table and seating in one.”

Del said the group is excited to have the involvement of local students also. “Andy, together with the local senior students will be making the seats,” Del said. “It is always great to be able to work with our local youth. They are often so willing to be a part of our projects and we are really excited to be doing something with the seniors this year.” “The skate park is well utilised by our young locals, and it’s really nice to think that they will be able to use new seating made by themselves or students they know.” As well as the local Skate Park, new seating is set to be installed along the traffic island of East Street. The project is supported by Rotary International District Grant funding. For further details on the project and/or the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, please phone: 0418 186 124. Celebrating Seniors Week

Julie Whittaker, Elsie Scott, Maureen Daniels, Lenor Barney, Dawn McClelland and Gladys Wooler enjoying the 2014 Senior Week celebrations.

For local resident Pat Hare, being a senior citizen is something worth celebrating. And it isn’t something she celebrates alone. The 80 year old Mount Morgan resident is the organiser of the local Senior Week celebrations, which are held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall each August. Seniors Week is held across the State annually and celebrates senior residents and the valuable contribution they make to the community. Close on 80 people joined in on the fun for Mount Morgan’s event, which was held on Monday, August 18. “It’s all about getting everyone to enjoy a morning out together,” Pat said on the local celebrations. “I think being a senior is something that should be celebrated, and it’s always a pleasure to see the event held for all to enjoy.” Pat is a member of the Mount Morgan Branch of the Australian Pensioners and Superannuates League, who were the official hosts of the event. The event included free morning tea, along with a morning of questionnaires and raffles. Attendees were also treated to entertainment; with live music by local residents, Trevor and Keith Stock as well as the Bouldercombe Singers. The committee of the Mount Morgan Branch sincerely thank all who supported and attended the event. All in the name of science

On Thursday August 20, Mount Morgan State High School students and teachers hosted a Science Week event. The theme for this year’s Science Week was “Food for the Future: Science feeding the World”. Year 6 and 7 Students and Teachers from Wowan, Central, Bouldercombe, and Gracemere State Schools came to the High School and participated in a number of science activities that were on offer for the day. The activities offered were Fruitcake Mining, It’s Electric, Biology Dissections, Sustainable Fishing and DNA lolly models. Ms Dale’s Drama Group gave a performance on the effects of Bullying and Mr Murray’s afternoon games group ran a series of role playing games. It was also the opening of the High School’s Aquaponics System. In light of the theme of Science Week, having an Aquaponics System for growing vegetables enables the students to learn about the technology of sustainable vegetable growing. Aquaponics is a working model of sustainable food production wherein plant and animal agriculture are integrated and recycling of nutrients and water filtration are linked. Aquaponics is the merger of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. The fish are kept in a large tank and the waste from the fish tank is passed through the grow beds where a naturally occurring bacteria converts the waste, largely ammonia, first to nitrite then to nitrate. The water is thus filtered and drains back into the fish tank. A simple idea, borrowed from nature, but with extraordinary results for modern gardeners. The National Science Week Open Day was a great way to showcase the different aspects of science studied here at Mount Morgan High. It was also an opportunity to promote the wonderful students, teachers, staff and volunteers here at Mount Morgan High School.

The feedback the High School received from the visiting teachers, students and our students from Mount Morgan High was extremely positive. People in Profile: Whitney Tull

People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in ofile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile People in Profile Peo

By Heather Quarry Our younger population of today are our leaders of tomorrow. Whitney Tull is one of Mount Morgan’s younger members of the community who really cares about family values, appreciates the meaning of friendships and strives to do her best in all aspects of her life. Whitney Allanna Tull was born at the Mount Morgan Hospital on the 26th of August 1997. She is the fourth eldest of nine children (three brothers and five sisters). Her mum and dad (Mandy and Alan) are proud of her love of life and moral values. Mount Morgan has been Whitney’s home since birth and she says she’d never have wanted to grow up anywhere else. She attended Mount Morgan Central State School which is coeducational and caters for children from prep to grade seven. From there Whitney went on to Mount Morgan State High School where she is currently enjoying her educational years. Whitney enjoys attending school and says she has great teachers and office staff who take the time to listen and understand the students. Many teenagers aren’t really sure of the direction they wish to take in the years following high school but Whitney has short listed her options of choice. When younger she had thoughts of becoming a photographer but as she progressed with her studies her ambitions changed. “My school has subjects I need for when I leave school. I want to get into Social Work but if that doesn’t work out I want to go into business or work in the field of hospitality.” Recently Whitney won the Central Queensland’s NAIDOC Student of the Year Award. Whitney and her family were surprised to learn she had even been nominated. They didn’t know until her name was called as the winner on the day. Whitney isn’t new to receiving awards, earning Academic and Achievement awards in some of her classes at school. She also had the honour of receiving a Darumbal Community Youth Service Indigenous Award. Netball is Whitney’s favourite sport. She enjoys swimming and mucking around playing Touch with her brothers, sisters and friends but they aren’t sports that she puts in her favourite category. Her choice of music is varied and she enjoys most styles of this art form, with the exception of Retro music. “I can’t stand the screamers in music,” she states with a definite tone. Whitney surrounds herself with family and friends that she cares about. “I like funny, generous people and people who make me laugh. Honesty is the main important thing in a person I think. The friends I have now are great. I love going on family outings. Some family days out are good and others are really hectic with so many family members.” Animals and birds hold a fascination all their own for Whitney. She loves them but can’t say she could choose one over another. “I don’t really have any favourite animals or birds. All animals are unique in their own way and birds are fascinating. I wish I could fly and be as free as birds.”

Food and fashion are another two topics Whitney has definite ideas on. Cooking is something Whitney likes doing sometimes but says her favourite food is her mum’s cooking. “Mum’s potato bake is pretty good but I like all her cooking”. When it comes to fashion she is a down to earth Jeans and Shirt girl. “My favourite clothes would have to be jeans and shirts. Depending on where I’m going though. If I’m going out for dinner I like wearing a nice T-shirt with jeans and nice shoes. At home I prefer to wear shorts and shirts. At school of course, I wear my uniform. I like our school uniform so I don’t mind wearing it”. When it comes to hair styles, Whitney says she usually prefers to stick to the normal pony tail look. “I’m more into the neat tidy pull back stuff.” Whitney always wears the same necklace around her neck. It was given to her by her sister. She also wears one ring on her finger and a pair of earrings. She doesn’t leave the house without each piece of jewellery and only ever takes them off at night so they don’t get broken. Turquoise is Whitney’s favourite colour. “I love blue and green but couldn’t decide which I liked best so turquoise is the closest to them both”. Being a proud Mount Morgan resident, Whitney supports the town she has grown up in. “I think the culture and history behind Mount Morgan is what makes it unique and makes it such a great attraction for tourists”. If she ever has the chance to travel she finds Paris, London, Hollywood (LA in general) and other major cities that hold various big attractions very appealing. “I wouldn’t want to live there for good, just visit a couple of months here and there to see what other places are really like. Growing up in a small town like Mount Morgan I’d probably find it difficult adapting to big city life styles now.”

Lorikeets swoop into the semis

It’s been another exciting season for the Lorikeets, who next week will play their semifinals. The local lads cemented their place in the semis last Saturday, when they walked away with a victory against the Colts in their quarter final. They won with a score of 43-23. “The scores were close at half time, thankfully we ended up running away with it in the end,” Lorikeets Coach, Clinton Connolly said. “Tries were made by Scott Toby, Neville Blake, Adam McDermott, Kyle Dodd,Todd Toby, Jeremiah Bray with a double, with four conversions made by Scott Toby.”

Mount Morgan, who currently sit second on the ladder, will now play their semis this coming Saturday (August 30), taking on Frenchville. The local club is welcoming all to come along. “We have seen such great support throughout the season, and hope to see the crowds there again this weekend,” Clinton said. The game will be held at Rugby Park, Rockhampton with kick off at 2pm. Pictured: Quarter finals - Mount Morgan Vs Colts, Saturday August 23. Photo supplied by Mount Morgan Railway Hotel Social Club.

A truckload of services for local community

Agencies supporting the people of Mount Morgan came together on Thursday 31st July to let the community know about the help that is available.

This gave other agencies an opportunity to get involved including the Hospital, Relationships Australia, Bidgerdii and Australian Red Cross.

Organisations gathered by the School of Arts to talk to passers-by about their services and to offer support where possible.

Local HIPPY Coordinator Imogen Gregg-Auriac said, “It is great when we can take the opportunity to all work together.”

The town was lucky to have the Department for Human Services Mobile Bus, as well as a barbecue provided by Partners in Recovery.

Over the last few months Police have received a number of reports of property being stolen from worksites in and around the Mount Morgan area. Various road work sites have been targeted resulting in multiple property items being stolen. Some of the property stolen includes tyres from mobile traffic lights, a computer from mobile traffic lights, diesel petrol, traffic signs, cameras and various hydraulic hoses. Police are appealing for public assistance for any information that may assist in this matter and lead to the location of the stolen property and offenders.

WATERWISE WEEK Last week I was asked if I would still recommend waterwise plants for Mount Morgan. The need for waterwise gardens may not be the number one garden media story now a days but I still believe it is the most important design factor. Unfortunately, there are many urban myths about what constitutes a waterwise garden. Some believe that the only way to have a waterwise garden is to have a Mexican-style garden with nothing but succulents, cacti terracotta pots and pebbles. With an adobe home, this style of garden can be quite attractive, but you don’t have to be that dramatic to save water in the garden. I often get asked the question “Can there be more than one waterwise type garden?” If you have the opportunity to visit some of the garden competition prize-winners this year you will find different plant choices and garden styles. Each still followed some very important guidelines when creating their gardens. All of these gardens were planned in advance, used soil mixtures high in vegetable matter, were very well mulched and used compatible plants. When selecting plants, particularly plants native to South Africa, the southern states of America, Central America and the Mediterranean can all provide an array of colourful, attractive foliaged plants for your waterwise garden. The native garden, using plant species from the dry tropic areas, can also provide a beautiful selection of plants for a native waterwise garden. These plants can provide you with at least four or five different garden styles. For more information on the 2014 Betascapes Spring Garden Spectacular, please contact Rockhampton Regional Council on 4932 9000 or go to www.rrc.qld.gov.au to enter.

Threatened Species Day 2014 falls on September 7th, and the idea behind it is to bring to the attention of both the public and the ‘powers that be’ the plight that many of our beautiful native animals are facing. The focus of this year’s Threatened Species day is the Grey-headed flying fox. This much malaligned animal has suffered greatly in the last couple of years, especially due to the change in government policies and mediahype. The Grey-headed flying fox is just one of the flying fox species. Otherwise known as fruit bats, the flying fox has 12 species in Australia. They are frequently seen hanging from branches in their ‘camps’, or communal roosts. Bats are furred and suckle their young at teats on the side of their chest. They usually have a single baby, but occasionally twins are born. Mothers carry their newborn in flight until they become too heavy, then they are left in a nursery roost while the mother goes foraging. Fruit bats use their sharp eyes and sense of smell for finding fruits and flowers that make up their diet. Bats help to keep the environment thriving as they feed on nectar and pick up pollen in their fur and transfer it from flower to flower. Many Australian native plants only flower at night, and the main pollinator of these plants is bats. They also spread native fruit seeds through the forest as they migrate from the fruits they have eaten, hence most rainforest trees and shrubs benefit. Contrary to media-hype, there is far less danger from a bat than from getting in a car and driving somewhere, or even from some domestic pets, cats carry much more dangerous diseases than bats do. Lyssavirus is one disease humans can catch if they are bitten or scratched; there is a vaccine available, and medical attention should be sought immediately. Hendra virus, despite all the media hype, cannot be contracted from bats directly, only from domestic animals, primarily horses. If you are concerned about the plight of our beautiful native bats, whose numbers are declining, then you can write or email Ministers. The current policy of frightening them away from certain roosting sites only increases immensely the stress levels of the animal. Any animal suffering stress can and will become ill, and the last thing anybody wants is colonies of sick bats. According the Natural History Museum of Australia there are 74 different species of bats in Qld. Some species still remain unlisted. There are no vampire bats in Australia. The two distinct types are the Microchiroptera which are the smaller insecteating species which hunt by radar, and the Megachiroptera which are the larger bats that feed on nectar and fruit by sight and smell. The Grey-headed flying fox is black with a bright orange mantle and a grey head.

CQ Regional Integrated Cancer Care Service Building work on the new Central Queensland Regional Integrated Cancer Service is moving along rapidly. Interior work is well under way and on track to have the service operating from its new location by the end of this year, or the beginning of next year. The new ward at the Rockhampton Hospital will have three floors dedicated to cancer services with radiation and oncology services expected to start in in 2015-16.

Round 4 Royalties for the Regions Councils and communities across the Mirani electorate are invited to apply for Round 4 of the Queensland Government’s successful Royalties for the Regions program. Round 4 will provide $210 million in funding for essential community infrastructure and this round also includes funding for strategic projects that will supercharge regional economies and will see the $210 million split into two components – a council competitive allocation and a strategic projects allocation for state-led regional infrastructure. Under Round 4, all councils and state government agencies can apply for funding for projects that support economic growth in their region and achieve the outcomes of the government’s RegionsQ initiative and I encourage councils and community groups to work together and with state government agencies in their area to identify infrastructure projects that will supercharge local economies and provide long-term benefits for their region. Councils have until 26 September 2014 to apply for Round 4 funding.

Rodeo Comes to Town

Hi the good people of Mount Morgan let us introduce ourselves... We are the Mount Morgan Rodeo Association Incorporated. (MMRAI); a small group consisting of country gals at heart, with a couple of tag along husbands when available, who are passionate about keeping the Mount’s Rodeo firmly planted in the community. The Rodeo has become a major part of the May weekend festivities and we will endeavour to continue this tradition for the upcoming generations. The MMRAI is not for profit and not affiliated with any other organisation including the May Festival Committee. We are a stand alone organisation that will donate the major percentage of each Rodeo’s profit to The Helicopter Rescue and the Calliungal Rural Fire Service. Both these services play a role in the health and safety of the Mount Morgan Township and surrounding farming communities. Keep an eye on the date claimer section in this paper for up coming events as we have a few things up our sleeves which we hope the whole community will embrace and become involved in such as, the Family Fun Day on the 18th of October. Old fashioned values and old fashioned games - remember the tug a war, egg and spoon, wheelbarrow race, balloon race etc. Gates open at 10 am and close at 10 pm. Campfire sing a long in the evening, bring your guitars, harmonicas or what ever else you can play. Heaps of good clean fun. Our major fund raiser is our little people (pictured with us above) that can be purchased all year round. Some of you may have come across them at the show this year. These are an old traditional item once seen in many homes that we have revamped and brought back into vougue. Wow Headline, new trend initiated in small country town of Mount Morgan, global news.

Our first fundraiser this year was our experience at running the canteen at the Mount Morgan show. We hope our service was prompt and the food was great for all you guys who came through the doors, and if some of you had a small wait we thank you for your patience. I for one now know what it’s like to run a very busy café, and those people need to be paid more. Further fundraisers to come will be Christmas goodies for sale such as Christmas cakes, plumb puddings, and Christmas slices. Talk of a food fest along with an auction- a tradeys night and an under 14 disco down the track. So much to do, so few people to do it. So if you have some time on your hands and just want to contribute to your community give us a call and I’m sure we’ll have something for you to do. I will endeavour to keep you up to date on what’s happening with the MMRAI every now and then through the Argus and anticipate the many calls I am going to get with the offer to assist with fund raising events or even ideas. For enquires for any above matters please contact, Barb 49381092, Lyn 0428733711 or Deb on 0407342597. Lyn Campion Secretary (MMRAI)

Soy, Garlic and Ginger Chicken Thigh Fillets

Full Moon to Markets and Music A poem by Frank Clark The full moon seemed to enlarge in girth Only because it is closer to the earth It enlightened the night with all of its might One would think it was almost daylight. In the morning I see a plane fuselage The wings look blurred in a cloud camouflage Things will improve in daylight as time goes by The clouds will clear and reveal blue skies. One morning the flats and hillside covered in frost I did not see it, under the blankets lost Jack Frost was there its pure white to share My eyes were closed protected from the glare.

Spring is just about here, so this issue is a spring time chicken dish. It works great hot or chilled in a spring picnic lunch. You can also serve hot on a bed of steamed rice. So here is lovely Soy, Garlic and Ginger Chicken Thigh Fillets which has ‘NO chilli”. I served it up with a couple of smoked chicken wings and fresh salad of lettuce, mushrooms, tomato and black Kalamata olives with a whole grain mustard dressing – which I have included the details of below.

Shopping list: • 500g chicken thigh fillets • ½ cup soy sauce • 2 garlic cloves • 1 teaspoon ginger powder • pinch pepper & salt

Method:

I just simply flatten the thigh fillets out with a meat mallet. Then, add the soy sauce, garlic and ginger marinate then fillet for 20 minutes. Fry on hot grill or pan until golden brown on both sides. I Serve hot and enjoy. Serving with salad dressing is simply 2 tbsp of whole grain mustard, 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, ¼ cup vinegar (white fine), 1 teaspoon raw sugar, which I put in a small jar with lid. Shake it up and pour over the salad and enjoy. This is lovely with a nice chilled white wine or a lager.

On the bus heading for the markets in the park The Dee River Oldies are on the way to Emu Park Soft soothing music from above our heads Not much talking we are listening instead. At the lights the brakes were applied We all realized we were still alive Rolling down Lakes Creek road no time to be blue A bougainvillea covered a Poinciana tree as it grew. Through the windows bright sunlight and blue skies We are in for a surprise what we see through our eyes It won’t be long and the ocean we will see Then we can wander the markets carefree. In the hall afternoon tea supplied The music started what a surprise the low and the highs Next on stage a guest from Adelaide We all could say thanks with sunshine and blue skies our day was made.
