Heading overseas, representing Australia and feeling the exhilaration of a rodeo challenge first hand… it’s certainly been an exciting start to the year for locals Annalise Cant and Zara Benjamin.

The local ladies were two of 11 talented Aussies to kick off 2014 in New Zealand, where they competed in the first stage of this year’s Trans Tasman High School Rodeo Challenge.

What a delightful and inspiring start to our New Year with news of activity on the “Keep Australia Beautiful” program – by children. Yes, school children want to improve their town and help Queensland castoff the image of being the untidiest state in Australia. The school children have adopted the slogan “Random Acts of Tidiness – Don’t litter – use the Bins”. This is encouraging news for the “Pride in Your Town members” as we have been urging this for the past three years- Think Clean – Be Tidy. We are hopeful that both the Central and High Schools will participate in the program of “Random Acts of Tidiness”. Our own Mark Ricks started “Random Acts of Kindness” which has successfully spread throughout many areas, now it is in the hands of school children to assist clean up the litter problem.

The other interesting item is the formation of a committee by children establishing the “Little People Program” to encourage adults not to litter. They admit to a huge task but are keen to carry it out and with both programs under way it is hoped that Mount Morgan can soon be among the tidiest towns in Queensland. Nothing is impossible with a little enthusiasm and carefulness.

In just a few weeks we will have the pleasure to celebrate Australia Day activities. So prepare now and get your flag, T-shirt, hat and car flag ready. Why not decorate your bike, scooter or the dog? Rotary is planning fun for the Day with great attractions and activities at the lovely Big Dam picnic area. This is a very special Day so do not miss out on the fun and show you truly are an “AUSSIE”.

The photo below is of the Red Hill State School, 1901 -1931. As early settlement was centred on Tipperary Point and Red Hill and with schools situated this side of town, an application was made for a school to be constructed at Red Hill. The school commenced with one room only but because of increased numbers an additional 2 more rooms were necessary. Infants used downstairs while older children upstairs. Pupils were encouraged to study for Pupil Teacher or for a Scholarship. Two successful pupils, Anne Shepherd and Malcolm Ellis after secondary education at Grammar schools advanced to University.

Malcolm Ellis became known Australia wide as a journalist for the Sydney Bulletin and was awarded an O.B.E. for his services to journalism.

They rounded up 2013 with a rodeo title each, and now local barrel racing talents and cousins, Zara Benjamin and Annalise Cant, have commenced the year with an exciting rodeo challenge under their belts.

The year 10 students have recently arrived back from New Zealand, where they competed in the first stage of this year’s Trans Tasman High School Rodeo Challenge.

The young talents were among 11 rodeo competitors to make up the Australian team; comprising of barrel racing, steer riding, bull riding and bronc riding up-and-comers.

Both Zara and Annalise competed in the competition’s barrel racing events, along with Alton Downs talent, Amber Patteson.

“This was the first stage of the year’s challenge,” Zara said on the recent trip’s background.

“There were three separate rodeos as part of it, and we competed in individual events.”

The local girls competed in each of the three rodeos, where they not only earned some valuable points for the Aussie team, but also some top placings.

For Zara, the event, which was the second year competing in New Zealand, saw second and fourth place achievements. For Annalise, her first time in the New Zealand arena proved an impressive debut; with fifth, fourth and third places.

Along with barrel racing, the girls said the recent trip also saw them provided the chance to try their hand at something a little different.

“We were able to have a go at steer riding, which was pretty exciting as it’s mainly a sport for the guys,” Annalise said.

“It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. None of us rode time so we didn’t last for the 6 seconds but I think we still did pretty good,” she laughed.

“We got stepped on and hung up but it was actually a good and fun experience.”

Overall the girls said they were happy with their achievements and the entire team’s efforts, particularly with riding unfamiliar horses and adjusting to New Zealand’s riding styles.

“I think we all did really well,” Zara said.

“Our team won the first rodeo challenge, but we weren’t as lucky with the others, and we lost the overall challenge by 40 points in the end.”

Though it isn’t yet the be all to end all for 2014’s challenge.

Zara and Annalise said they are looking forward to the chance to even the score later in the year.

“We’re looking forward to the second challenge,” Annalise said.

“That’ll be later in the year and this time New Zealand will head over to Australia.”

Along with the second challenge, the girls are aiming for a successful year overall; with Zara setting her sights on the CRCA Junior Title and Young Guns Title for the second year in a row, and Annalise aiming for ABHA Senior Youth Champion for the second year running, and the overall highest points for the Australian High School Rodeo Association.

Mount Morgan OES make a sweet donation for Christmas

Stan was the former Mayor of Mount Morgan, a member of the Mount Morgan Shire Council from 1988 to 2004, and in the early days a Police Officer at Mount Morgan Police Station.

Giving has never been sweeter for members of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Morgan.

I know I and my staff will miss the cheery emails and updates we received regularly…

Last month saw the local group donate a large number of Christmas treats to residents of the Mount Morgan John Cani, as a special gift in the lead up to Christmas.

The tasty treats, which included homemade biscuits, Christmas cakes and plum puddings, were enjoyed at a Christmas morning tea at the John Cani on December 18.

Introduction to Policelink What is Policelink?

Policelink is a division of the Queensland Police Service, introduced in 2010 to assist with delivering professional and timely service to the state of Queensland. Our contact centre is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

By phoning 131 444, you will speak with specifically trained Policelink Client Service Officers who can assist you with your non-urgent incident report or your general Queensland Police Service enquiry.

Policelink enhances the services the Queensland Police provides to the State by allowing Police Officers more time to perform operational duties, improving front line response times.

When should you call Policelink?

Anytime you would like to report a non-urgent crime or incident, or for general police enquiries, phone Policelink on 131 444.

If the crime is happening now, life threatening or there is a likelihood of the suspected offenders in the area, call 000 immediately.

However for all non-urgent assistance phone Policelink on 131 444. Some examples of the types of non-urgent incidents you can report by phone include; wilful property damage, stealing offences, break and enters, stolen vehicles and lost property.

What happens when you call 131 444?

When you contact Policelink, our specifically trained Client Service Officers and Police Technical Advisors will process your non-urgent reports and assist with any of your general Police enquiries. Where appropriate, Policelink staff may issue you with a crime report number for insurance purposes or for follow up enquiries.

For health reasons we had to have a break from wildlife caring last year, although we still had a steady stream of animals coming in, however it was quieter than usual.

Please, if you find a sick, injured or orphaned native animal, keep it warm, quiet, and stress it as little as possible. Keep it away from kids, dogs, cats, loud noises, etc. More often than not it is stress that will kill the animal. Do not try to feed it or give it water.

Hekyl and Jekyl are a pair of Currawong chicks that came in to care a few months ago, they were a delight to raise, being primarily fruit eaters and very easy to feed. Once I saw that they would pick up food on their own I placed them in a large aviary to gain flying experience and also so they can learn to forage for insects etc., however as soon as they saw me coming with a dish of food they would land on me or in front of me and demand that I feed them. The funny thing is that once I let them out of the aviary, only the older chick (Hekyl) would come anywhere near me. His brother would harrass him for food instead. They were left to their own devices unless food was demanded of me until they eventually could look after themselves. I still see them around at times and am happy to see they are surviving on their own.

Please check pouches of injured or dead animals. If you find a joey that has fur, just place him gently in an old pillowcase, jumper, towel, or whatever you have available and keep him warm and quiet. However if you find a furless baby that is attached to the teat, then very gently try to pull him off the teat. If there is any resistance then do not attempt to remove the teat, instead cut the teat as close as possible to the mum’s body and leave the remainder of the teat in the joey’s mouth. Forcibly trying to remove it can injure or kill the joey.

Hi Argus readers, Happy New Year!

We hope 2014 is off to a great start for you all and that you had a very merry Christmas.

Our Christmas Hamper!:

Speaking of Christmas, a very big thanks goes to all who purchased tickets for our massive Christmas hamper!

The Christmas season was extra merry for local resident Louise Fox, who was the lucky winner!!

The funds raised from this hamper will go toward this year’s restocking of the Mount Morgan Dam. Each year, MMPAD works in with Hanwood Fish Hatchery to see thousands of fish fingerlings released into our local waterway. This project is aligned with a restocking management plan for the Mount Morgan Dam, which outlines a number of native fish to be released up until 2015– including Golden Perch, Saratoga, Silver Perch, Sleepy Cod and Eel- Tailed Catfish.

Last year saw 8,500 Golden Perch fingerlings released.

Details for this year are 7,500 Golden Perch and 1,000 Sleepy Cod. Be sure to keep an eye on our regular updates for details of this year’s release! We are always pleased to welcome interested locals to attend and be a part of the day.

Our new location:

Things have been busy here at MMPAD, particularly with our team settling in to our new location. As you may have read in our final issue of 2013, we were announced as the new management team for the Mount Morgan Railway Museum, which was previously managed by the Rockhampton Regional Council.

This complex officially reopened on the 2nd of January and continues to operate as previously – as both a rail museum and tourist information centre. As our new location, part of the complex is also utilised as our office, to carry out our regular duties such as the production of the Argus and local development projects.

We are happy to report that we are settling in well, and much of this is thanks to some very kind and greatly appreciated support. We’re very lucky to have assistance from our volunteers and also members of Mount Morgan Railway Inc - who have been carrying out volunteer work at the complex over the years and have kindly been showing us the ropes.

A reminder that our office number has now changed also.

In our final updates in the 2013 Argus, we rounded up the year with a number of thank you messages, to all who kindly supported the GMF over the past year.

For our first update for 2014, we start with another thank you – namely to Mr John Tuxworth.

Firstly, we inform that last month John tendered his resignation as Secretary of the Golden Mount Festival. His expertise will be sorely missed and we sincerely thank John for his hard work as Secretary over the past months.

John will be continuing to support the organisation and provide his valuable assistance as a GMF member.

As a follow on, the GMF held a special meeting earlier this month to induct a new Secretary for our organisation. A replacement Secretary was unanimously accepted – and we are pleased to announce and welcome Katrina Anderson to the Executive team.

We are looking forward to continuing to work toward the 2014 Festival and go from strength to strength.

Honey and Lemon Spare Ribs (Chinese style)

The weather is still hot and steamy, and you can cook this one in your Weber Q or Hooded BBQ, It’s a lovely mix of sweet honey and sour lemon with that salty soya sauce making a marriage in heaven. If cooking on a hooded BBQ, just watch your heat - you want it low about 140C and just take it slowly and baste it with any leftover marinade. I love serving with a smashed potatoes with olive oil and Italian herbs and steamed green peas with a little butter and parsley.

Shopping list: • 1½ kg pork spare ribs (Chinese style) or loin chops, • ¼ cup sherry • ½ cup honey • ¼ cup lemon juice • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 3 garlic cloves Method: Place pork spare ribs in baking dish and mix all other ingredients. Pour mix over ribs and rub in to those cuts.

Let set in fridge for 4 hours.

Next, bake in gas smoker or oven, on low moderate heat (130C to 150C°), covered for about 3½ hours, or until tender, with the last 35 minutes uncovered, basting occasionally.

Remove excess fat by skimming. Serve with a smashed potatoes with olive oil and Italian herbs and steamed green peas with a little butter and parsley.

Goes well with a nice Moscato chilled, or an icy cold beer of your choice. Please enjoy this as much as I have. And I allow 2 to 3 spare ribs per serve.
