Researchers map movements of Mount Morgan houses Work is continuing to move ahead for the Museum of Central Queensland Inc (MoCQ), who have been developing an exciting new project focusing on former Mount Morgan houses.

The MoCQ team have been mapping the migration of Mount Morgan houses – moved from the area a number of years ago to various locations around the district.

The project’s official website was launched this week and the team are now welcoming all to view the current findings as well as make a contribution of their very own.

A little history this edition from an article taken from the Morning Bulletin dated 14th August 1929. The huge stack mentioned in the article refers to what was called “the Mundic Creek Chimney stack” built in 1898; 150ft high, 18ft square at base. It was one of more than 23 stacks that had been built between 1885 and 1915.

The article reads: 14th August 1929.

“Some of the old landmarks on the leases of the old Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. are shortly to disappear and operations have been commenced to materially alter the landscape. Perhaps one of the best known sights to the thousands who have gone over the leases is the huge chimney stack which for years has given the impression of being about to collapse. It is Mount Morgan’s “leaning tower of Pisa”. The stack which is one of three similar structures has been out of use for some time, even before the closure of the mine. Owing to its decided lean the Inspector of Mines deemed it unsafe and recommended its demolition and work was commenced yesterday to blow it up. Although this looked a comparatively easy job the old stack proved a much tougher proposition than was anticipated. A large quantity of fracture was placed in position at the base, but when it was set off the explosion no more than shook the old warrior. Quite a number of people who had heard of the intended demolition and were gathered in different vantage points to witness the crash had to leave and go home disappointed. Another attempt will be made tomorrow, and those in charge state they will make no mistake this time.

Mr. Crawford, one of the directors of the new Mount Morgan Limited has been in town for a few days connected with business for the Company. Of late the townspeople have been looking on matters in a much more optimistic manner than previously. Several shops which have been untenanted for some time in various parts of the town have been let, whilst one in Morgan Street is at present being renovated and altered pending the occupancy of an Italian, a stranger to the town, who intends opening an up-to-date fruit and café business.

The Council employees are at present engaged on the work of asphalting the footpath in Morgan Street and altogether the town presents a much more cheerful aspect that it did a few weeks ago. Mount Morgan. August 14, 1929.” End of article.

Actually the stack did not lean like the tower of Pisa but took the shape of a parabolic curve, technical description.

It lay on the hillside until 1970 and when cleared many of the bricks were still in good condition. Great workmanship in those early years.

Researchers map movements of Mount Morgan houses Could it be possible that a Mount Morgan house was returned to its hometown fifty years after being moved to another area?... Were some Mount Morgan houses relocated around Central Queensland not once, but three times?...

These are some of the fascinating tales emerging from across the district of late, thanks to a current community based project by the Museum of Central Queensland Inc (MoCQ).

Known as “Moving House”, the project aims to trace the movement of hundreds of former Mount Morgan houses, with the help of Central Queenslanders now living in, or having a connection to a relocated Mount Morgan home.

The project taps into community knowledge to map, describe and explain the removal and relocation of some of the houses.

Discussing the project, Moving House coordinator and Associate Professor from CQUniversity, Steve Mullins said the project is about drawing attention to the interconnectedness of the region.

“It’s something that you seem to run into often – someone you know has lived in a home originally from Mount Morgan, or knows someone who has or does,” Professor Mullins said.

“I’ve personally been curious about homes that have been moved from Mount Morgan for a long time.

I used to live in a former Mount Morgan home in Rockhampton.

“These homes have been moved to numerous areas around the district and they have made an important contribution to the region’s ‘tin and timber’ cultural heritage.”

The Moving House project commenced late last year with initial research into some of the whys and hows of the relocations.

“From documentation, we have found that hundreds of houses were moved from Mount Morgan, with over 240 relocated by the mid 1920s,” Professor Mullins said.

“It’s interesting that this was before the official closure of the first mining company.

We were expecting the main movement to have been after it was closed.”

Professor Mullins said that research has found a large number of Mount Morgan homes throughout CQ. “The furthest we have found a Mount Morgan home moved has been Proserpine, though there are houses throughout the district – from Mackay to Gladstone, Blackall to Emu Park, Rockhampton to the Callide.

“The relocated Mount Morgan houses also vary greatly.

Some are shacks and others are really magnificent places.

It crosses a breadth and that’s the phenomenon of Moving House.”

With initial research under wraps, the next stage for Moving House includes an invitation for all to make a contribution toward the project.

An official website for the project has been launched and the MoCQ team are inviting all to share their connection with these houses via the interactive site; whether by pinpointing a relocated Mount Morgan house on an interactive map, uploading a photo, contributing a few lines or, indeed, writing a whole story.

Over the past month at Mount Morgan Central we have been very fortunate to have the FLIPSIDE CIRCUS return to our school.

Jesse, David and Ben continued the work of the team who visited late last year to develop even further our performance skills in the Arts, and participation and confidence in Physical Education.

We would like to thank FLIPSIDE, the parents who supported their students and school by attending and transporting on the day, and also Jacinta from the Village Festival team (along with her local Circus School).

The classes replaced our regular smARTs and PE lessons for 2 weeks.

A smaller selection of children, who showed great development in both areas, were also selected by the Flipside team and teachers to participate in the planning and presenting of 2 shows at the Village Festival last weekend.

Every student involved in this day enjoyed the show and gave it their all! The children were supported by their parents, our local community and visitors to the village festival also.

It was a joy to witness the sense of achievement in several of the children, who have asked to continue to develop skills in this area.

Kindy Care’s Cultural Adventure The children and parents of Kindy Care recently took off on an adventure and enjoyed a trip to the Dreamtime Cultural Centre and Heritage Village by school bus.

All of the children had been excited for weeks and we were all very happy when the day of our trip finally arrived.

First up was the Dreamtime Cultural Centre. Our first stop at the Centre was the “Dugong” replica. We were amazed at the size of this and that it was even made with a room inside. Moving on, we found that we had some amazing talent when it came to our next activity - boomerang throwing. We then headed into the centre’s cave (pictured) and were amazed at the sounds of the didgeridoo, thanks to Scott, our tour guide.

Then off we went in the bus to the Heritage Village where we were firstly driven around in a horse and carriage. We then had the privilege of going in an old fire truck and jeep with all children grinning from ear to ear. For our last adventure, we all set off in a tram to feed the animals and enjoy a pony ride.

All children enjoyed this cultural adventure. A big thank you to all the staff and parents who came along and participated.

Students at Mount Morgan State High School are currently madly working away in their preparations for their biannual school production.

This year the school has gone with something a little different... “Seriously Short”, as the school has dubbed it, is a series of short 10 minute plays.

These plays are performed in and directed by current and ex Mount Morgan students, with the help of their teachers.

Students and teachers at the school also have begun their preparations in other areas with students volunteering to create sets, costumes and prepare food.

From a Murder Mystery containing some eerie singing of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ to a humorous re-enactment of some bar flies by a group of Grade 8 students, this Production promises to keep you entertained.

Come for the Drama, Mystery, Comedy, Romance or merely to support our local up and coming talent.

‘Seriously Short’ is a night not to be missed.

 

Close on one hundred people headed to the School of Arts last Monday to join the Mount Morgan Branch of the Australian Pensioners and Superannuates League for their 2013 Seniors Week celebrations.

The local group hosted a morning tea in recognition of Seniors Week; an annual event held across the State highlighting the valuable role seniors play in families and communities.

The local celebrations included free morning tea, along with a morning of questionnaires and raffles.

Attendees were also treated to live entertainment; with poetry provided by local resident, Alma Graham, and live music by local residents, Trevor and Keith Stock and students and staff of the Mount Morgan State High School.

The committee of the Mount Morgan Branch thank all who supported the event.

“On behalf of the Mount Morgan Branch, a sincere thank you to all who came along and made the day such a success,” Branch President, Barry Hare said.

“There was a really good crowd. We were joined by members of the local community, residents from Mount Morgan Hospital and John Cani along with attendees who had travelled from Gracemere and Rockhampton which was great.

“We had a lot of positive comments and our visitors said they are looking forward to next year’s event.”

Members of the Dee River Oldies Group enjoyed “Damper at the Dam” last Thursday in celebration of Seniors Week 2013.

The day welcomed over 40 of our club’s members to the picturesque Number 7 Dam, to enjoy a day with friends, along with some delicious damper and syrup as well as curry and rice.

Local musicians Freda McDougall, Betty Ware, Delores Du-pelle and Jim Lynch (pictured right) provided the event’s entertainment. Jim Lynch also donated one of his very own recorded CDs for our raffle, which was won by Noelene Cunynghame. A big thanks, Jim. Other raffle winners on the day were Sylvia Clark – who won 1st prize in our raffle (a teddy bear made by Mrs Nell Shaw); Freda McDougall – who was the winner of our second prize (a wooden bowl made by Keith Watts); and Noelene Cunynghame – who was lucky a second time, winning our third prize (two decorated hangers made by Tracy Glover, and an umbrella donated by Morrie Lloyd).

Street stalls: Congratulations to local residents, Henry Anderson and Marlene Sealy who were the lucky winners of our recent meat tray raffles (drawn on July 18 and August 15).

Don’t miss our next street stall in Morgan Street, to be held on the 17th of October.

Each year, Australians of all ages are invited to join in the celebrations of Children’s Book Week; a weeklong annual event celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.

This year’s event was held from August 17 – 23.

Libraries around the Rockhampton Region were among those to celebrate the event, with a number of special events held for its launch last Saturday.

Mount Morgan’s event saw a number of young readers dress as their favourite book characters and head to the library for a morning of activities, competitions and of course - books!

Among the morning’s attendees were Captain Hook (Cody Pearce) and Peter Pan (Jai Pearce), pictured right.

More on Children’s Book Week: Children’s Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, this year celebrating its 68th year.

The event is also a celebration of the best of Australian children’s literature published in the previous 12 months.

We are very pleased to advise however that Mount Morgan Promotion and Development, in conjunction with the local community, will be continuing this Festival in the same manner as we did.

We hope you have been enjoying the 2013 Argus! We have been receiving some great comments about our special 20 pager for Issue 15 as well as last issue’s coverage of the 2013 Mount Morgan Agricultural Show.

A sincere thanks to all for your positive comments.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend a special thanks to all who participated in any way in supporting this well attended festival – whether by entering trees, conducting stalls, giving their talents or attending the event over the last ten years.

A big thanks also to all who have been passing on story ideas and article submissions of late. We always love receiving your contributions and hope you have enjoyed seeing your inclusions and story tips in print. Please keep them coming :)

Now on to a few other updates from MMPAD… Upcoming event – Silver Wattle Day!: We hope that you have all seen or heard the promotions for the event we are hosting this Sunday– Mount Morgan Silver Wattle Day!!

This event is being held on National Wattle Day (September 1st) and will celebrate this event as well as Mount Morgan’s very own native wattle known as the Silver Wattle, the Mount Morgan Wattle, or for the gardening gurus out there – the “Acacia podalyriifolia”.

The day will include children’s amusements, some fantastic water activities, live entertainment and a whole lot more. It is sure to be a great day so we hope to see you there!!

Recent networking nights: Our Project Officer, Camille Steinberger was recently invited to attend a Community Cabinet Official Government Reception held in Gladstone last Sunday evening.

This event saw Camille provided with the opportunity to meet and speak with Campbell Newman MP, Premier of Queensland, as well as members of the Cabinet.

Another event recently attended by members of our organisation was a networking evening hosted by Capricorn Enterprise at the Capricorn Coast.

Along with networking with a number of Capricorn Enterprise members, the evening also provided the chance to meet and speak with the Board of QTIC (Queensland Tourism Industry Council).

Camille, along with our Vice President Rosemary Izzard attended the event. Executive members of the Golden Mount Festival Committee, Dick Needham and John Tuxworth were also in attendance.

Our next installment of Photo Flashbacks takes us to the very early years of Mount Morgan’s township, when a number of impressive buildings were being erected throughout the area.

This great photo presents one such structure - Mount Morgan’s early Catholic Church.

The building was erected in Gordon Street in the late 1880s, where it remained until 2001.

Mountain Mick’s Ham, Peas, Corn Cheesy Quiche Tartlets (Potato Top)

Spring is here - cold nights and warm days. These are a mini quiches, which are dead easy to make, taste great both hot or cold and the kids will love them. If you’ve got fussy kids that don’t eat peas or corn, just blitz them in the milk/egg mixture in the blender before you add the cheese and ham and this will hide the veggies. These are ideal for kids lunches. Hope you enjoy!

The Mount Morgan Welfare Bowls Club hosted their annual visit from Brothers Capricornia Social Bowls club on Sunday 18th August.

This club is made up of bowlers from different clubs in the Central Queensland area.

The event saw lots of friendly players on the green and a great day was had by all.

A sincere thank you to all who came along and took part on the day, and congratulations to the day’s winners: Brian Glover (Mount Morgan resident and our club’s President), Bernie Hickman (Adelaide visitor), Jack Berry (North Rockhampton resident) and Barbara Friesacher (Mount Morgan resident).

Ingredients:

• 10 to 12 slices of bread • 1 onion, finely chopped • 200g ham, in short, thin strips • 6 eggs • 2 clove of crushed garlic • a pinch of salt • 1 tablespoon parsley • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika • a good pinch of black or white pepper • 1 cup (250ml) milk • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese • ½ cup frozen peas • ½ cup frozen sweet corn kernels Method: 1. Flour, with egg and cold milk. Whisk to mix in the cornflour, then add all the spices, and mix again to incorporate all 2. Now add ham, peas, corn & ¾ of a cup of cheese (hold back a little to put on top) and mix well 3. Pre-heat oven for 10 minutes at 180C. Now, using use a large muffin tray, take the slices of bread one at a time - soak one side into the egg liquor, then put & shape it into one of the muffin pots. Make sure you have sprayed the tray first and make sure you put the bread slice soaked side facing upwards.

Repeat until all are done.

4. Now fill each one with a good scoop of egg/ham/pea/corn and cheesy mixture. Making sure not to over fill this mix- on the large muffin tray I end up doing two batches.

5. Now bake for 25 minutes in preheated oven. Take out and quickly add a little more cheese and back into the oven for 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown.

6. Serve with green salad. I would serve an ice cold pear cider or a rose hip tea.

Note: I do make a grated potato topping for these as well which is simply: 2 potatoes grated and rinsed in lemon juice before being blanched in boiling water for 5 minutes. They are then drained well and placed on top of each one before going into the oven.
