BOOM TIME FOR MOUNT REAL ESTATE
Mount Morgan is in the heart of a real estate boom, with real estate agents seeking not only saleable properties, but also rentals. Discover Real Estate agent, Angela Douglas said real estate in Mount Morgan is definitely in the “boom” phase.
now I'm telling them, it's time to do so. There's a large number of people from down south wanting to move to regional Queensland and we have a market here, where if they sell down there, with the money they have made, they can buy in Mount Morgan and have little to no mortgage. Mount Morgan is one of
“For years, I’ve been telling people to wait to sell,

Real Estate Boom from Page 1 the few places that is affordable, but still has all the infrastructure of a much larger township and is such a short distance to a major town, like Rockhampton,” she said. RealWay’s Vince Agius said Mount Morgan’s real estate was definitely booming, due to the high demand. Both Angela and Vince agree that the market in Mount Morgan had picked up despite the global pandemic. “Until 18 months ago, prices in Mount Morgan had dropped by nearly 50 percent over a five- year period. The last 18 months has seen an increase in prices by more than 30 percent,” Angela said. “There are properties that were on the market for literally years that are now sold. I’ve sold more than 40 properties in the last 18 months,” she said.
NEW AQUATIC CENTRE FOR MOUNT MORGAN Mount Morgan’s 65 plus year old swimming pool may soon be replaced by a more modern aquatic centre. Rockhampton Regional Council is seeking funding from the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund for the redevelopment of the pool area at Boyd Park. The pool, named after A.A. Boyd, was refurbished in 1953 by Mount Morgan Limited during Glenister Sheil’s time as General Manager of the Mine. The grandstands and surrounds to Boyd Park were given a new lease of life in 1956 Division 5 Councillor, Cherie Rutherford said the pool had received a bit of TLC during the winter month and reopened at the beginning of September.
“It’s no secret that the pool is in need of some major attention and while some works and maintenance to the site have extended its usability, we have plans to redevelop the site as a whole new Aquatic Centre,” Cr Rutherford said. “The pool site has reached the end of its life and we want to create a centre that will suit the needs of Mount Morgan and the greater region for many years to come,” she said. Council applied for funding at the end of August. “It’s a project we’re eager to work with all levels of government to deliver!”
“For the previous 10 years, I’ve had 50 plus property listings at any one time. Now houses generally sell within weeks of being listed, if they’re priced right, while rental shave upwards of 20, sometimes as many as 40 applicants for one place,” Angela said. Vince currently has 24 properties for sale and a further 12 under contract since September. “During the last 12 months rental prices in Mount Morgan have increased by 7.5 to 8.5 percent and there are no rental vacancies at the moment,” he said. “We’ve been holding Open homes for rentals and every time we get between six and 12 people applying. Our online rental applications are also high,” he said. “As rentals increase in prices in other places in Central Queensland, renters are looking to drop down to the lower rental situation in Mount Morgan – at the moment we have no rental vacancies in Mount Morgan,” he said. Vince said in the last few weeks the interest RealWay was getting for owner-occupier houses and investment properties had increased “The current situation is what I have always wanted for Mount Morgan since I started working in the area over 20 years ago. It’s a real “mish-mash” with valuations and property values increasing and vacancy rates tightening,” he said. “Mount Morgan is a small town that has more infrastructure than any other small town – everything is here. This is what people look for when they are looking to move to the area or looking for investment,” he said. The demand for housing is also driving prices up. Houses that were selling for $100,000 are now selling for $130 - $140k. Sometimes, the properties are selling before the realtors have an opportunity to advertise on the internet. Both Angela and Vince are looking for rental and selling stock. If you are considering selling, now would be a good time to cash in on the real estate boom in Mount Morgan.

businesses rally for 2021 buy local Mount Morgan businesses have rallied behind the 2021 Buy Local promotion organised by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD], which started on 11 October. Over 30 Mount Morgan businesses are participating in this year’s promotion which offers a total prize pool of $1700.00, comprising of vouchers which can be redeemed at any participating business in Mount Morgan. MMPAD President, John Steinberger said he was happy with the final prize pool. “There is little doubt that 2021 has been a tough year for many and it’s pleasing to see the local businesses get behind this promotion,” he said. He said MMPAD was happy that Rockhampton Regional Council’s economic development arm, Advance Rockhampton has come on board again this year. “While it’s obvious that the winners of the prizes will benefit from the Buy Local, MMPAD is hoping the businesses will have an increased turnover throughout this promotion – that’s the real focus,” Mr Steinberger said. MMPAD was also given donations from the Rainbow
Café, Railway Hotel That Truck and Bobcat Bloke.
’This is a great gesture from these businesses and allows us to increase the original prize pool considerably,” Mr Steinberger said. “With Christmas just around the corner, there is plenty of opportunity for not only Mount Morgan residents, but anyone who shops in Mount Morgan to receive some serious voucher prizes.” Shoppers can enter by spending $20 or more in a single shop at any of the participating businesses, writing their name and telephone number on the back of the docket and placing the docket in the box provided at any participating store. They have until close of business Wednesday, 15 December to enter. The draw will take place on Friday, 17 December 2021. MMPAD would like to thank Advance Rockhampton, the Rainbow Café, the Railway Hotel and That Truck & Bobcat Bloke for their support of this promotion through a contribution to the total prize pool. MMPAD also contributed to the prize pool. Keep an eye out for shops displaying the Buy Local signage to know where you can make a purchase or place your shopper dockets into the draw.

PRESERVING MOUNT MORGAN’S HISTORY Passion for preserving Mount Morgan’s historic landmarks and sites was in evidence at the inaugural meeting of a committee dedicated to ensuring that the town’s rich history is kept alive. The meeting was organised by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] and held at the Mount Morgan Railway Station on Tuesday, 5 October. A similar committee had been formed over eight years but due to unforeseen circumstances, was disbanded. Ten community members discussed a range of ideas for not only preserving, but interpreting existing sites. Projects ranged from beautification and signage to preservation of events and buildings. MMPAD President, Mr John Steinberger said all attendees demonstrated a strong passion towards preserving Mount Morgan’s history. “There are some little projects that we can start to
work on, but others will overlap with other jurisdictions – such as Rockhampton Regional Council owned properties,” he said. Members were asked to spend some time looking at and photographing different landmarks and sites around town and identifying these sites. “We will aim to identify and prioritise towards achievable outcomes, always working with asset owners and other stakeholders,” Mr Steinberger said. “Inevitably this group may not be able to preserve everything identified but hopefully will work towards rectification and preservation of areas to prevent them from disappearing forever.” The next meeting will be held at the Mount Morgan Railway Station on Tuesday, 9 November 2021 where the information and photos collated will be workshopped to determine priorities.
Vac and Chip pet program to relaunch this October Rockhampton Regional Council has teamed up with two local vets and national charity Paws for a Purpose again this year, to deliver the annual voucher program for pet owners across the Region.
Participating vets include: • Alma Street Veterinary Hospital; and
Known as ‘Vac and Chip’, the program offers eligible residents with discounted vaccinations and microchipping for their pet dogs.
For more information of the program, including eligibility and application forms, head to https:// www.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/AboutCouncil/ Customer-Forms#Animals.
Councillor for Planning and Regulation, Grant Mathers, said he was thrilled to see such an important program on offer once again. “Vac and Chip officially recommences from this Friday, and we’re incredibly proud to be rolling the program out again this year,” Cr Mathers said.
• Capricorn Veterinary Clinic
Residents can also contact Council’s Customer Service team for more information by phoning 4932 9000 or emailing enquiries@rrc.qld.gov.au. To find out more about Paws for a Purpose, head to www.pawsforapurpose.org.
“Overall, the Vac and Chip is designed to give a helping hand to pet owners who are doing things a little tough. “We know that many pet owners want to do what’s best for their dog but that covering the cost of vaccinations and microchipping can be a challenge. “Vaccinations normally cost around $100, and puppies need three of those in their first four months, plus a booster every year thereafter. “Microchipping is an additional cost to that again, so it’s easy to see why people struggle with these kinds of fees at times. “Through the program, eligible residents are able to have their dogs vaccinated for $15 and microchipped for $10 – so that’s a huge subsidy. “It’s our way of helping local residents give their pets the best possible care they need and I want to thank Paws for a Purpose for teaming up with Council again this year, and the local vet clinics who have come on board.” Page 4

PEOPLE IN PROFILE Keith Watts Submitted Article
was located on the corner of East and Pattison Streets. Keith was a “Jack of all Trades” there, serving behind the counter, bagging spuds, and washing kerosene bottles. “In those days you could bring in soft drink bottles to cash for money or lollies”. Keith said. Not unlike our current system of containers for change. He then moved on to work at the Mount Morgan Mine in the electrical shop, then Lawgi Railway Station as a Fettler. Keith’s first job at the Mount Morgan mine was as a sample boy, then as a pipe fitter alongside his father in the open cut. The job often involved working knee deep in water to repair and lay new water and air pipes. Keith Watts was born on the 28 October 1928 to Henry Charles and Mary (Blaik) Watts. While his siblings were all born in Mount Morgan, Keith the middle child of eight children, was born in Jambin as his parents were working on a dairy farm, growing cotton due to the closure of the Mount Morgan mine after the underground fire. The family moved back to the Mount when Keith was one, to his grandfather’s property which has been in the family for over 100 years. Keith attended the Mount Morgan Central State School, then High School for a short time before gaining employment as a “roustabout” for a couple of years with Norm Geha who owned a clothing store in Morgan Street. This was before the fire in1939 that destroyed many shops. From there Keith worked at “Rowes Top Shop”, owned by Holly and Abbie Rowe Snr., which Page 10
Keith spent ten years driving a shovel in the open cut and a further ten years operating the dredge in No 1 mill. There were two mills operating at that time. “From the day I started work at the mine, there was one particular Boss who did everything he could to make my life difficult. But I stuck it out!” Keith said. The mine employees worked eight hour shifts from Monday to Friday, Day, Night and Afternoon (DNA). Many miners walked to and from work in those days, which could take up to an hour each way! Although the employees were never told the mine was soon to close, they knew that its life was ebbing due to the amount of ore the loaders were bringing in. Often the drivers spent most of the time cleaning scrub to bring water into the Dee River, diverting it from entering the open cut. This was done in conjunction with hard rock miners from Northern Europe who resided in the Quarters in the MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
Stewarts Building which is now home to the Historical Museum. The mine closed in 1989 and Keith left with a leather wallet embossed with an image of the ‘Big Stack” and a large amount of ‘sickies’ and ‘long service leave’ owing. He still uses the wallet today, however the stack insignia is a little worse for wear. Keith recalls while working on the loaders the crew were all set up at the No 7 Dam with dredges to increase the dam capacity, when the operation was called off for fear the action would put too much pressure on the dam wall. After he left the mine Keith spent seven years working at Middlemount German Creek Mine before returning to Mount Morgan. Keith married his first wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Jordan), who was a nursing sister at the Mount Morgan Hospital in 1953 and they settled in Central Street eventually moving to the Keimar property and original home which was then owned by his parents. Together the couple purchased a “Logan Kit Home” which Keith and Mary put together in three weeks while he was on holiday from the Mine. A local builder would visit every morning to allocate the work for the day, and then he’d come back in the afternoon to check what the ‘workers’ had done throughout the day. Sadly, Mary passed away in May,1989. Keith met Ann, his second wife, a podiatrist, when she visited the Mount for work, often staying with her friend Maureen Daniels before travelling further to Baralaba to work. Ann has also passed away. During retirement Keith has not been idle, and he was a member of the “North Rockhampton Railway Station Shed”, located in Kershaw Gardens, which is now the Rockhampton Wood Workers Guild. He attends the woodworking group every Wednesday and has seen numbers slowly dwindle from over 80 participants down to 20, with two ladies attending.

Mountaineers win the Stewart’s Cup!
‘Football [Soccer] Trophy – Stewart's Cup, the trophy which the British Football [Soccer] Association awarded to the Mount Morgan team [the Mountaineers] as the winners, against the [Rockhampton] Scottish Football [Soccer] Club, was despatched to the Mount on Monday [11 March 1889]. This handsome trophy will be placed for a week in the window of Messrs. Kirby Bros.' establishment in that town, and will afterwards be placed in the hands of Mr. Wesley Hall, the president of the winning club (‘General News’, The Daily Northern Argus, Rockhampton, Qld. : 1875-1896), 13 March 1889). James Stewart and Co. of Rockhampton donated a silver, English-crafted cup in 1887 for football (soccer) competitions in Rockhampton and the district. It was officially called “The Stewart Football Trophy”. The Mount Morgan team, the Mountaineers, won the trophy in the 1888-89 season, with George Weedman as captain. Renowned local photographer, Jens Hansen Lundager, photographed the winning team, the umpire and the club secretary (pictured). (The publication of this photograph was made possible through digital restoration). You could say that the Stewart Football Trophy was the forerunner of the Wesley Hall Cup. The president Page 12
of the Mount Morgan Football [Soccer] Club, Wesley Hall (inset), promised the Mount Morgan team a trophy of their own in 1892 after they won the Stewart Football Trophy, yet again – a promise he fulfilled with the Wesley Hall Cup in 1894. 1889 / Stewart Football Trophy winners, the Mountaineers (colours: red and white stripes). Movie Review THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD “How are you gonna create those massive wildfires man? You can’t just go in and burn down an entire forest...” “Easy”’ says Taylor Sheridan, writer, director and producer of THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD “I’m gonna go out into the desert and build a forest - and then I’m gonna burn it down.” Taylor grew up on a small, struggling ranch in Texas where they couldn’t even afford a stereo in the house. When they lost the property in the early 1990’s it proved to be the catalyst that with a little luck, changed the course of his life. Taylor dropped out of Uni, moved to Austin and mowed lawns, painted houses and did odd jobs to pay the bills. While looking for work in a shopping mall he was spotted by a talent scout who offered him the chance to go to Chicago and pursue an acting career. (I guess it’s an asset to be built like a huge super-fit Gridiron player, to be insanely good looking and talented, and to be highly
intelligent...) After roles in WALKER, TEXAS RANGER & VERONICA MARS, Taylor Sheridan really rose to global prominence as David Hale in SONS OF ANARCHY. Then he turned (thankfully, for us) to screenwriting and directing. He has written highly acclaimed films like SICARIO (2015), HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016), SICARIO 2: DAY OF THE SOLDADO (2018), and WITHOUT REMORSE (2018). In 2017 he not only wrote but also directed WIND RIVER, and with this year’s release of THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD he wears the triple mantle of screenwriter, director and producer. To cap all that off, he is the creator, writer, director and producer of our new favourite series with Kevin Costner, YELLOWSTONE. Get ready for another great tale... Angelina Jolie stars as Hanna, a smoke jumper reeling from the loss of three young lives she failed

to save from a wildfire. When she comes across a bloodied, traumatized 12-year-old boy, they set out together to cross the miles of thick forest with two relentless assassins in pursuit. Braving deadly lightning storms that threaten even Hanna’s well-honed survival skills, they are caught between the two cold-blooded killers who are quickly gaining on them from one direction, and a massive fiery blaze, a furnace coming straight for them from the other, consuming absolutely every living thing in its path. They’re trapped... Also starring Nicholas Hoult (X-MEN’s Hank McCoy/Beast), Jon Bernthall (WALKING DEAD’s Shane) and Aiden Gillen (GAME OF THRONES’ Littlefinger), THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD runs for 95 pulse-pounding minutes and is rated MA15+ for “Strong violence and coarse language”. Taylor Sheridan is awesome. THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD... Loved it!

They won the event by four shots from Moranbah Number one team of Jason Fletcher, Darrin Stevenson, Kevin Mc Donald, and Brent Fraser who finished on 232. Mount Morgan’s Shaun Antcliff fired a one under the card 71 to win the gross, with Emerald’s Jack Mc Donald winning the Col Gill memorial shield with the best Nett of 69. Capella, with a membership of only 17 has to be congratulated for the way they presented their nine hole grass green course that enabled all players that made up 43 teams of four from 23 golf clubs that finished in daylight hours. Saturday’s pre-Robinson cup competition, an 18 hole Single stableford event witnessed ladies playing for the first time and all expressed their joy in being able to compete along with the men.
Short history of the cup The tournament is a single stroke teams event played over 18 holes with two teams of four players per club invited to attend with the best three net scores to count in each team. The Robinson Cup event was introduced in 1935 by Mr. J. Robinson the owner of a Rockhampton popular sports store of the day, who also donated the perpetual trophy that is still played for to-day. Gladstone Golf Club was the first club to host the event, who went onto win this inaugural historic event Golf Central Queensland took control of the event in 1941 and successfully supported the event to try to assist the smaller clubs within Central Queensland financially and create a men’s inter-club competition that suited all levels of competitor golfers with a maximum handicap of 24. This was later increased to 27, and a roster was introduced. Gladstone went onto win the Robinson Cup another nine times, lastly winning in 2005. Rockhampton has been the most successful club by winning the event 12 times, Emerald has only won it once in 1964 against 27 clubs, with a possible of 54 teams of 216 competitors. In 2014, Biloela set a new record of 168 player for a course with less than 18 holes. Submitted Gurney T. Clamp
Capella’s Adrian Robinson carded 38 points to win the event by two points from Baralaba’s Dan Evans on 36 points. The long drives went to A grade: Dillon West, B grade: Kurt Sullivan & C grade Matthew Sahlqvist. With Luke Dorrell winning the pin shot At presentations a Yeppoon representative invited everyone to attend the Robinson Cup at their club in 2022 where they are expecting a record number of players to tee up. Wowan golf club will host it in 2023 with the event returning to Clermont in 2024
raptors win challenge cup The Mount Morgan team’s Douglas Forbes was awarded Man of the Match. Kyran Brady scored two tries, while Travis Ireland, Zaine Wright and Pearce Donald contributed with a try each. Kyran also successfully kicked a conversion. Coach Lachlan Jones congratulated the Mount Morgan team members on their continued effort and ability which constantly and consistently improved all season. Mount Morgan’s Year 7-8 Raptors Rugby League team again claimed the Chairman’s Challenge Cup when they played Rockhampton Grammar prior to the September School Holidays, defeating the Rockhampton team 26 – 22 in a tightly contested match. 13 - 27 October 2021
