this crucial project.”

These works will also support projected growth in Gracemere, ensuring the community has the water security needed to grow and thrive.

Assistant Minister for Train Manufacturing, Regional Development and Jobs, Bruce Saunders said Not only would this project creating jobs during construction, but a secure water supply bolsters jobs growth for existing businesses in the region and brings more businesses and families to the area.

The project is anticipated to be completed in September 2025, weather permitting. Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek said the Labor government was committed to water security in regional Queensland. The Government announced funding for the Mount Morgan water supply project late last year and so I am pleased to see work commencing. “This is a critical project to ensure Mount Morgan has access to reliable water for generations to come,” Minister Plibersek said. “It’s water infrastructure projects like this that ensure Australia has a strong regional heartbeat, something that this government is proud to deliver,” she said. Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm said the Federal Government was getting on with delivering the infrastructure that Queensland needs to safeguard our water supply so that regional communities can continue to be a great place to live. “Queenslanders are aware of the threat droughts pose to our environment and the economy, and while this summer hasn’t been as dry as first thought, we need to make sure that we’re as prepared as possible for when we inevitably encounter another drought,” Senator Chisholm said.

“The Albanese and Miles Labor Governments are supporting Rockhampton Regional Council in the delivery of safe and reliable drinking water for Mount Morgan now and into the future, “We have committed to maximise the use of local labour, suppliers, materials, and sub-contractors,” he said. Member for Rockhampton, Barry O’Rourke said it was fantastic to see this region-changing project reach this important milestone. “The Pipeline and associated works will bring an end to water carting and secure the long-term sustainability and liveability of the town,” he said. Pipeline...From Page 2 Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said it was great to have reached this significant milestone and to see the first pipes being installed. “This project is a game-changer for Mount Morgan. We know that we simply don’t have the catchment size and rainfall to provide that vital water security the town needs over the long-term. “The Mount Morgan Pipeline will ensure that our community can grow and share in the jobs and economic opportunities we are pursuing as a region and mean real and tangible benefits for local residents and business.” Mount Morgan residents have been on level 6 water usage restrictions since March 2021 due to the prolonged drought conditions and previously low levels in Mount Morgan’s Number

7 dam. Rockhampton Regional Council has been funding approximately 20 water carting trucks per day to deliver potable supplies to Mount Morgan for over 30 months, with

the Queensland Government contributing $10.8 million toward carting costs. Above: The first of the water pipelines are laid for the Mount Morgan Pipeline.

Round 2 of Community Assistance Program creates opportunities for communities Rockhampton Regional Council has opened round two of the 2023/24 Community Assistance Program (CAP), supporting not-for-profit organisations planning to host local projects and events within the Council area. Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said this is a fantastic opportunity for local groups, organisations and community or sporting groups to gain funding for events or initiatives within the region. “The Community Assistance Program centres on supporting activities, initiatives, and projects that bring about positive outcomes for the entire community, and we take great pride in this funding program,” Cr Wickerson said. “During the last round, Council supported 20 local organisations by delivering 24 diverse projects and events with a combined funding of $55,512. “These initiatives ranged from sponsoring major sporting events like the 57th National Rodeo Finals and the 20th Rockhampton Dance Festival, to empowering local community projects like the establishment of a new desktop computer for Narnia Kindergarten and Preschool and fitness classes at Wycarbah Hall. “We want to encourage local organisations, both Page 4

big and small, to apply in round two and really take advantage of this great funding opportunity.” There are five different categories available with each catering for a variety of initiatives. These categories include Community Development Grants, Community Facilities Insurance Support, Environmental and Sustainability Grants, Local Community Events Sponsorship and Regional Community Events Sponsorship. Cr Wickerson said interested organisations and community groups are encouraged to apply online before the closure date, 26 February 2024. “There are many exciting events and projects on the horizon for 2024 thanks to the Community Assistance Program,” Cr Wickerson said. “One of these great events includes the upcoming Colour me Capricorn Rockhampton event held by RACQ CapRescue, who received $5,000 funding for the event.” Applications for round two of the 2023/24 Community Assistance Program will close 26 February 2024. For more information about Council’s Community Assistance Program and how to apply, please contact Council on 4936 8368.

CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA DAY 2024

Over 200 people attended the annual Australia Day celebrations, organised by the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan at the historic Mount Morgan Railway precinct. Rotary Club President, Mr Craig Edmonston said he would like to thank all involved in the festivities, in particular John Steinberger and Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc for their help and allowing use of the venue. He said the change of venue came as a result of the prediction of a hot dry summer. “We had to make a decision in October and we felt that with the predicted dry weather, the dam did not appear as an attractive venue. “With the unexpected rain over December-January, it was too late for us to alter the venue,” he said. The event, sponsored by the Rockhampton Regional Council’s Australia Day Event Fund enabled the Rotary Club to put on amusement activities such as the rock tower, jumping castle and face painting. The Eden Bann Cuties with an assortment of baby goats, pigs, puppies, chickens, lambs and more was popular for young and old. There was also free food on offer. COUNCIL GREENLIGHTS NEW COMMUNITY GARDENS POLICY With an increasing demand for community gardens across the Region, Council has this week adopted a new policy that will allow residents to establish gardens in approved public spaces.

to consider the impact on nearby residents and businesses, ensuring the establishment of a garden does not adversely affect those in the surrounding area.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said this initiative is a result of local residents and community groups expressing their eagerness to cultivate a sense of community through shared gardening spaces.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said the adoption of the Community Gardens Policy has resulted from working in conjunction with two trial projects at both an existing and proposed community garden site.

“Council has received a number of requests to establish community gardens and the adoption of this new policy is a great step towards helping those interested groups put forward their ideas and proposals for establishing a garden,” Cr Rutherford said.

"These site trials have played a crucial role in shaping the Policy and has involved working through different scenarios and community group structures which all contributed to the development of the policy.

“Community gardens will give the community an opportunity to take pride in their neighbourhood and actively contribute to the transformation of public spaces into beautiful, vibrant community gardens. “Not only do community gardens create an inclusive space where people can connect, share knowledge and skills, but it also encourages resourcefulness which leads to a reduction in food waste.”

“Community groups with a shared vison will now have a better understanding of the considerations and planning necessary for establishing a community garden, and we are hoping this knowledge helps lay the foundation for delivering a successful garden.” For more information about the Community Gardens Policy and how your community group can get involved, please contact Council’s Strategic Planning department on 07 4932 9000 or email enquiries@rrc. qld.gov.au.

DAM SPILLWAY BREACHED - AT LAST!

Photos: Ron Rogers In a Rockhampton Regional Council media statement released in early January it was noted that Council was committed to utilising the No. 7 Dam to supply water to Mount Morgan. The media release said Council was in the process of recommissioning the water treatment plant and associated infrastructure to ensure that the water can be treated to potable standard for town usage. Part of the process would be to undertake water quality testing. Utilising the No. 7 Dam is an interim measure until the pipeline is completed as forecasted in the latter part of 2025. Photos: Ron Rogers Since Rockhampton Regional Council started trucking water in 2021 and stopped using the No. 7 Dam, there was little hope, but lots of prayers that the dam would fill. While other areas around the Dee River catchment were receiving dam-filling falls, Mount Morgan surrounds missed out on the rain required to fill the dam. When it was advised by the weather bureau that that El Nino would be back in play this summer, the hopes of seeing the dam fill faded. However, some good falls in December and January saw the dam fill to just below the spillway... until last weekend when a couple of downpours ensured it breached the spillway. With more rain predicted, it is hoped that dam will get a good flush which will help to improve the quality of the water. Page 12

MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

Hopefully, the Level 6 water restrictions which Mount Morgan has endured can be eased. The full dam also means that Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc can restock the dam with fingerlings and enhance the fishing potential of the area. The influx of visitors to this lovely spot will hopefully provide some economic spin offs for the community. 31 January - 14 February 2024

2023 - It’s a wrap! Australia Day is an important occasion to celebrate our success as a nation, including our indigenous heritage and the contribution of generations of multicultural communities from every part of the world. It is disappointing that a few large publicly listed companies are also focussing on supporting political campaigns, such as undermining Australia Day, rather than lowering costs for their customers or improving their service. Australia Day is a proud day for the many thousands of people who will join our multicultural family and become Australian citizens. It should be respected and supported by the Australian Government. To me, Australia Day is for all Australians to reflect, respect and celebrate. On Australia Day, we reflect on the past, present, and look to the future. We listen and respect each other's stories, contributions, and aspirations. We celebrate being Australian together, fair, and free. This year, I will be attending Australia Day citizenship ceremonies across the Flynn electorate to welcome our newest Australian citizens into the local community. I’m sure they will agree with me that Australia is the best country in the world. Happy Australia Day. I’m pleased that the Mount Morgan Promotion and Development project ‘Mount Morgan CBD -Links to its Historic Past’ is up and running! I was proud to support this project through the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Grant. The ‘Mount Morgan CBD – Links to its Historic Past’ project was installed on 22 December and can be accessed through five QR posts. It is a self-guided tour through the main business area of the town. I look forward to checking out this tour when I am next in Mount Morgan.

MOUNT MORGAN BRANCH UPDATE

known as ‘wild clay ’, has been found in at least five different colours. It is not unusual for clay to be close to gold; the famous Bendigo Pottery in Victoria was first founded using wild clay deposits in 1857. The Bendigo goldfields of course were close by.

Submitted by Arlene Roberts - Vice President

Those of us who have recently moved to the Mount might not have heard of the fireclay caverns located on the Mine Site. There is no access permitted to the 4-12 metre-high caverns nor can people view the dinosaur footprints found there.

Hello and welcome to the first QCWA Mount Morgan Branch writeup for 2024. This has certainly been a different start to a year with cyclones, hot temperatures, and the start of the Mount Morgan Water Pipeline. But perhaps the best happening was the dam filling. The paddocks and hills all seem to come to life after rain and it is a photographer’s dream when it all comes together. This year the Mount Morgan Branch has several functions planned such as stalls at Golden Mount Festival, Mount Morgan Show and at Wattle Day. We are organising to have regular raffles and occasionally pop-up stalls in the main street. We want to encourage ladies to come along and see what we are all about. We are considering other functions, but we will definitely be holding our giant cent sale in November again this year. Our cookbooks are still on sale at the Railway Museum and Explore Centre and are very popular. We will continue to do our Domestic Violence Packs and don’t forget we have our yearly school bursaries.

Before the fireclay source was decommissioned it provided clay for the mine’s furnaces. Kaolin clay is also found in the hills behind Baree; a white chalky clay, it is commonly used for cosmetic and Pharmaceuticals. The geological map below is found at www. Geoscience data.qld.gov.au and highlights the old fireclay pits on the mine site. Currently, Wild Mount Morgan Clay is using three locally sourced wild clays for workshops - yellow clay, kaolin and chocolate coloured clay. All pottery works are fired in a wood fired updraft kiln on site. Workshops currently on offer for February include making your own Pink Galah on Friday, 4 February 2024 and a series of small birds Saturday, 17 February from wild clay. Both can be booked via 0427 314 410 or online at www.wildmountmorganclay.au.

So, as you can see we are well and truly ready for the year. Our aim is to continue to help in our community and we invite other ladies to come along and meet the members. We meet at the green shed near the swimming pool on the third Monday of each month at 10am. This year our branch will celebrate its seventy-fourth birthday on the 24 March. We are very proud of this achievement, and we hope to be a part of this community for many years to come. We may not have our own hall, but we strive to achieve as much as we can by helping others, forming friendships through projects and common interests. Our membership numbers are small but what we lack in numbers we gain in strength in commitment and determination. Yes, we have fun, and we welcome all ladies in our community. If you would like to find out more, please contact me on arleneroberts@bigpond.com . Please keep an eye out for our functions on the back of the Argus.
