When “Pride in your Town” started three years ago it was hoped to encourage everyone to “Think Clean - Be Tidy” and to take great pride in our town. Sadly, recently this has lapsed somewhat as reflected by the amount of papers, carton and drink containers in our gutters while a bin is located nearby. Please do use the bins and have Morgan Street a clean area to please not only our visitors but ourselves. Let us show by example we are a Proud and Clean Town. Our historical item goes back to 1921 when Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co experienced a very disastrous strike of almost 12 months. It was a severe test to the Government as well as the Company. The slump in the copper prices resulted in a large overdraft and for the first time in its 35 years of operation was unable to pay the shareholders a dividend. On March 21 it shut down the works and asked the Unions to accept a 20% reduction in wages. The General Manager, Mr A Boyd said everyone from Directors down to lowest paid boy had to choose between reduction of wages or loss of employment. On May 4, the employees rejected the company’s offer putting thousands on the bread line and only Government rations assisted many homes from misery and hopelessness. On October 8, after 28 weeks of the strike it was reported that the town was at breaking point. This strike not only affected the 1282 mine workers and their families in Mount Morgan but had far reaching impacts in Central Queensland with businesses, timber getting industry, wharf labourers and railway staff having lost income as well. On February 12 1922, the Queensland Government helped negotiate a solution and the Unions accepted the Arbitration Court’s ruling of a reduction of the Queensland basic wage from 11s/9d per day to 10s/10d per day. (Very low wages for sure.) The government added a subsidy of 12s per week as a rebate on railway costs amounting to 1100 pounds which was distributed amongst the employees. When the MMGMCo announced it would take applications for employment on February 20 at 6am that day there were already several hundred men waiting for the office to open. By February 25 1187 ex-employees had registered for work. This certainly was one of the bleaker times in the history of mining in Mount Morgan. Thankfully many strikes did not happen over its 100 years of operation.

3 A new and lavish black velour house curtain will soon grace the stage of Mount Morgan’s much loved School of Arts. The new drapes, complete with a cord drawn runner, will replace borrowed and worn curtains currently being utilised at the hall. The new curtain will be customised to fully cloak the stage and run on a track up to 13 metres wide, with a 6 metre drop. The exciting replacement is a joint venture between Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc and the local community, and has been achieved through generous sponsorship provided by both local and regional organisations. Discussing the project, MMPAD President John Steinberger said the new curtain will make a valued addition to a hall which has long been a setting for many community memories. “Mount Morgan’s School of Arts has been a cherished location in the community, and we are very excited to assist in further adding to its future use.” Over the years, the building has set the stage for countless memories; hosting individual celebrations, visiting performances as well as yearly community events such as senior formals, school productions, award ceremonies and the Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival. Mr Steinberger said this continued and regular use of the Hall was a major motivation for the group to see a new curtain sourced.

“Initially our organisation was approached by staff member of the State High School, Anna Kahler regarding the possibility of raising funds for a new curtain,” Mr Steinberger said. “As a drama teacher, Anna saw the need and benefit of a new stage curtain – both aesthetically and practically.” “Our Project officer, Camille worked together with Anna in sourcing funds for the project, and through the generosity of local organisations and two successful grant applications they were able to raise the required sum.” The project, including the curtain’s manufacture, assembly and installation is totalled at $6,500 and has been sponsored by Stanwell Power Station, Rockhampton Regional Council, the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan and the Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes, Mount Morgan Branch. “We sincerely thank our sponsors toward this project,” Mr Steinberger said. “This great addition follows the major restoration works carried out in 2011 through State and Council funding which saw the repair work and repainting of the building’s exterior. “The curtain will be for all to utilise and we are really looking forward to seeing it fitted.” It is anticipated that the curtain will be installed by the end of the year, with a community event held in celebration of the hall’s new addition. Further details will be provided on the event in future issues of the Argus.

School Community band together to create ‘Seriously Short’ With Mount Morgan State High School’s Production of ‘Seriously Short’ set to take to the stage this week, it is all hands on deck. In true Mount Morgan fashion, this year’s production has seen a bevy of school staff, students and even ex-students and community members contributing to everything from costuming to writing of scripts for the 5 short plays. With ‘Performance Studies’ now a subject in the senior school, Mrs Rachael Lewis and her students have a huge hand in creating many of the behind the scenes and visuals required for the production to come to fruition. In addition, ex-students, Linda Bunning, Carmel Fox and Philip Bird have been doing their bit, each taken responsibility for the artistic direction of separate 10 minute plays with Philip even writing one of them himself. With all these creative minds combined and all those who will be thanked on the night - this is surely a performance not to be missed. The five plays showing include: “5 Kings”, “Awkward”, “Traveller in the Dark”, “Ten Million Pieces of my Heart” and “The First Fireworks”.

Student performers come from Grade 8 through to Grade 12. Stop by to see all the excitement in action this Thursday and Friday (10th and 11th October). Held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall. Doors open 6.30pm for 7pm start. Cost includes: adults- $7, children- $5 and family of 4- $20. Pictured: Corrina Gassler, Brodie Tremaine and John Turner rehearse “5 Kings”. A local fundraiser has seen more than $500 donated to staff of the Rockhampton Base Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. The recent fundraiser was hosted by local residents Dennis and Marie Johnson in special recognition of palliative care staff and the valued support the local couple have experienced firsthand. In 2010, Dennis was diagnosed with breast cancer. His diagnosis led to a mastectomy and was followed by four months of intensive chemotherapy. Dennis and Marie said that along with the great support provided by their family and friends, the support provided by the Palliative Care staff was something they cherished during their difficult time. The local couple recently held a community dance in aim of raising funds for the Palliative Care Unit. The event, held on Saturday September 21, welcomed around 40 local residents. The evening, along with a collection tin which was located at the MMPAD Office, saw a total of $530.00 raised. The sum was donated to the Palliative Care Unit staff on September 24. Dennis and Marie sincerely thank all who supported the fundraising efforts. A special thanks also goes to the Leichhardt Hotel, Andrew and staff at the Grand Hotel, IGA Mount Morgan, The White Elephant, Daphne from Blue Care Mount Morgan, and Frank and Rose Molloy.

On the 10th of September 1978, two people came together as husband and wife at a beautiful garden wedding in Brisbane. The bride wore a long white gown and her flowers were a mix of hibiscus and frangipanis. The groom wore long black trousers, a black sports jacket, white shirt and blue tie. The bride and groom were Dianne and Michael (Di and Mick), two of our locals who decided to settle in Mount Morgan many years ago. They own their own home and have shared over 35 years together.

When it comes to fancy dress parties and events, there’s no denying the fun that can be found in getting into costume. Though for some, finding the right attire for hire close by or at the last minute can be far from entertaining. Local resident, Faylyn Cook is aiming to take away such challenges, with the recent opening of a new store in Morgan Street. “When I returned to Mount Morgan a couple of years ago I was really impressed with the number of themed parties and events held in the local community,” Faylyn said. “Themed parties are great fun, but if people are like me at times you’re pulling your hair out trying to find or think of something to wear. “I had been thinking of doing something like this for a while and thought how great it would be to give the community the option to hire costumes locally and find something at short notice if they needed to.” With this focus in mind, Faylyn has officially opened the doors of “Faylyn’s Gifts and Costume Hire”. “With Halloween approaching, there are a number of Halloween costumes available, but I am working on building up stock,” Faylyn said. “I’m looking to have a really good variety in store and am also happy to accommodate to people’s particular events with a week or two’s notice.” Along with costumes and accessories, the store also accommodates for other event needs; including gifts and party adornments.

“There’s a range of gifts available in store, including original artworks, bed lamps, photo frames, cushions and the like,” Faylyn said. “And there’s also items like table centrepieces and special party invitations.” For further information or to check out Faylyn’s store – head to 57 A Morgan Street. The Dee Oldies at the Silver Wattle Fun Day: The Dee River Oldies Group was invited to hold a stall at The Silver Wattle Day held at the Mount Morgan Dam on September 1st. As we set out our home made cakes, preserves and plants the customers arrived. All our goods were sold. Our raffle, a $50 voucher from I.G.A., was won by Ronwyn from the Bakery. We enjoyed the day even meeting up with some ex Mount Morganites. Thank you to everyone who donated on the day. The Dee River Oldies head to Kroombit Park: On September 11th, 35 members of The Dee River Oldies Group went on a bus trip to Kroombit Park, a working cattle station 35kms. from Biloela.

Doug Hoehne and his Mum, Agnes, showed us their talent with the whip cracking however and Carolyn Read gave us a lesson in line dancing . After having a tour of the complex, seeing the animals and reading about the plane,“Betsy” which crashed on the property in World War Two, we were served a camp oven meal of roast beef and veggies and dessert served by the backpackers who come from five different countries and were all very willing to talk about their experiences. 1st prize in the raffle went to Abbie Rowe and second prize to Agnes Hoehne. We arrived back in Mount Morgan around four o’clock. See page 15 of this issue for a poem on the Dee Oldies Group’s latest outing, by Frank Clark. Pictured: The Dee River Oldies outside their coach for Kroombit.

On arrival we were greeted with damper and syrup for morning tea and were given a demonstration by some of the backpackers working there on the mechanical bull, as none of our group were eager to give it a try.

News from the Mount Morgan Museum Last month saw the Mount Morgan Historical Museum’s Bare Foot Bowls charity event held at the Welfare Bowls Club.

Lastly, thank you to Dave who donated a bottle of wine and Joe James for the metal dustpans and the metal tool box he made himself.

This was a great day for all of those who participated and everyone gave generously by buying raffle tickets from our group to help us raise funds for our annual insurance.

Pictured: participants enjoying the barefoot bowls day on September 28.

We had four groups of four people playing bowls, unfortunately eight lots could not make it. We would like to thank everyone who attended and everyone who donated generously to our multi-draw including IGA Mt Morgan and the Hardware Mt Morgan. Also thank you to the Welfare Bowls Club for allowing us to use their club house and for specially ordering in a bottle of Rum for our raffle prize, which was won by Zoe Scott. A big thank you also to Bobbie Bolton for making the cakes for our afternoon tea and the IGA Mt Morgan for supplying us with sausages at a discount and the Hot Bread Shop for donating some of the bread rolls and selling us the others at a discount.

Four evaporators operating on the Mount Morgan Mine site are assisting to lower the water level in the open cut pit. In fact, a combination of surface evaporation, water treatment plant operation and the evaporators is seeing the pit water level drop by up to 15 mm per day. The evaporators are fully automated, operating within the optimum levels for humidity, wind speed and wind direction. This operational set up was designed to minimise overspray onto site infrastructure as well as direct spray drift and noise away from the town. Baseline noise monitoring has suggested minimal disturbance, however ongoing noise monitoring will continue to ensure adherence to current noise legislation and regulations. Following a number of concerns raised by residents, the evaporators will be shut down in the evenings to further reduce noise disturbance to the community. Air monitoring has also been undertaken on site with results showing that all readings are well under the current legislation and regulation for particulates and suspended matter. In addition, Meyenberg Crossing (main site access road) has been upgraded to improve the site’s resilience in upcoming wet seasons. New, larger culverts have been installed as well as a full concrete top to further protect this crossing during flooding. Please contact the Mount Morgan Mine Rehabilitation Project Team should you require any further information on (07) 4938 4688 or visit our website http://mines.industry.qld.gov.au/safety-and-health/ mount-morgan.htm Pictured: evaporator in operation at the Mount Morgan Mine Site. Consultation is continuing for the former Caretaker’s Cottage/ Assay Office located at Boyd Park, following a town meeting held at the School of Arts hall last Wednesday evening. The Rockhampton Regional Council hosted the meeting to discuss the findings of a recent community survey regarding the site, as well as possible action for its future. The evening saw around 25 local residents join Mayor Margaret Strelow, Councillor Cherie Rutherford and Council officials for the discussion. The evening included background on its current state of disrepair, as well as its recognised historical importance – serving not only as a town residence, but as the first assay office for Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. Conversation on the building’s future took an overall positive approach, with the outcome of the evening to see further assessment and possible retention options investigated for the building. Full details are expected to be formalised following further inspection carried out by Council. In the interim, Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated will be establishing a subcommittee to focus on the conservation of the local area’s heritage and important sites, with the former assay office recognised as one such area. The forming of this subcommittee follows past meetings held between MMPAD, Council, members of the Queensland Government and other asset owners; in aim of forming a stronger conservation plan established for the Mount Morgan area. MMPAD is calling upon all residents interested in the conservation of the former assay office and all other local sites to become involved. To become a member or for further information, please contact Camille at MMPAD on 4938 2333 or email mmpad@bigpond.com

Mount Morgan Disaster Management Team Mount Morgan Mount Morgan Disaster Management Team Mount Morgan

It is with pleasure that I can announce that the community of Mount Morgan now has its own Community Disaster Team. The team members consist of staff from the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, the State Emergency Service, Queensland Health and John Cani Aged Care. The principal role of the team is to co-ordinate locally in the event of any kind of major disaster which would directly affect the local community. This may be a significant weather event, fire, flood or any other local disaster. The team will work in conjunction with the Rockhampton Local Disaster Management Group should the incident be major and require more resources than are available locally. The Mt Morgan All Hazards Community Plan will be available to the public on the Rockhampton Regional Council website and explains in depth what the role and focus of the team is. For those who may wish to view the document but are unable to access a computer you can attend at the Mt Morgan Library and I am confident the helpful staff from there will point you in the right direction. Should the community be in a position where the Community Disaster Team needs to be activated, any information that needs to be conveyed to the general public such as emergency shelter or warnings will be on a display board in the front window of the Mt Morgan Fire Station which is situated next to the Post Office in Morgan Street. Further to this, any of the emergency services will be able to provide up to date information on what to do or where to go in the event of a disaster. While we all hope there will be no need for the services of the Community Disaster Team we can all be comfortable in the knowledge that the community will be well advised and all emergency services will be working together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the Mt Morgan community. More information about being prepared is available on the following website www.qld.gov.au/getready Mark Dean Community Disaster Team Leader Officer In Charge Mt Morgan Police Station

Hi Argus readers, With just five issues left of the Argus for the year, we hope you have been enjoying your fortnightly issues. You may have noticed a new column we have recently started – featuring views on Mount Morgan passed on by visitors to the town. We have been receiving some fantastic comments about the area of late and thought they were too good to keep to ourselves.

Saturday, November 9th 7pm, School of Arts Hall

If you have a family member or friend visiting the local area who would like to leave a comment about the Mount, please let them know our details.

Teams of six. $10.00 per person (Includes light supper).

Speaking of visitors’ views, we were very happy to have a comment about the Argus from a Springsure resident recently, who said that it’s “the best little paper he has read”. Thanks John! Now onto a few updates… Special thanks: Our Project Officer, Camille Steinberger has recently returned from a few weeks holiday over in the US. A very big thanks goes to local resident, John Marsh, who kindly took care of the last Argus layout in Camille’s absence. The 2013 Christmas Tree Festival: A recent issue of the Argus included an update from the Parish of Saint Mary’s, who announced that due to health and manpower, they have asked our organisation to assist in overseeing the annual Christmas Tree Festival. We are very pleased to provide assistance to this event and would just like to take this opportunity to recognise Annie and Keith Hare, Noel Kearney and the late Margaret Kearney for establishing this event and seeing it become the annual celebration our community knows and loves. MMPAD will be working closely with Saint Mary’s for this year’s event – which will be held on the 13th and 14th of December. We look forward to bringing you further details on this in the upcoming weeks, but in the meantime – don’t forget to get cracking on your tree entries! Trivia night and cent sale! In aim of raising the required funds to host the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival, MMPAD will be hosting two fundraising events next month. After such a great time was had by all at our first cent sale and trivia night earlier this year, we are very excited to announce that we will be hosting these again! We are excitedly stocking up for our cent sale and also working on some doozies for our trivia questions. Please see across the page for further details. Stay up to date with all MMPAD projects: Don’t forget that you can stay up to date with all of MMPAD’s projects by collecting a copy of the monthly reports compiled by our Project Officer. Each report is available from our office (61 Morgan Street), or can be sent directly to your email upon request.

Bring some friends, have some fun & win some great prizes! Proceeds to 2013 Christmas Tree Festival To register your team, please contact Mount Morgan Promotion and Development: Ph: 4938 2333 / Email: mmpad@bigpond.com

Our Remote Control Car Drift Day: The remote control drift car’s meeting went well in lots of respects – the venue was great, thanks to support of Mr Nicholson of the Mount Morgan High School; the staff was excellent – especially Melvene Stewart and Kevin Gunsler – a big thank you; and the boys from Rocky, who bought their cars and equipment were happy and will readily come again. We must not forget Rose and Frank for letting us have the use of chairs from the Community Hall – it was a big help. Let us not forget our generous sponsors – Ramm’s Bi-Rite Electrical – who donated the RC Car, won with ticket number A65, by B. Howie. The Mount Morgan and Gracemere Hardware – who donated a $20 voucher, this was won with ticket number E21 – by P. Winston. We sincerely thank all of the businesses for supplying the goods required for the BBQ, Di for the music and the GMF members for their efforts. Sponsors and supporters: We would like to sincerely thank Hugh McGilvray, who recently obtained sponsorship of $500 donated for the GMF, from the IGA Community Chest. A big thanks also goes to those who sponsor our weekly raffles. Although there are still slots we are hoping to fill, all support is a great help and goes toward the running of our next Festival. Recent member’s meet: Sunday the 29th of September, the GMF held a special members meeting to set our goals for the next May Day Festival. This was a great success so we thank both Jenni and Karletta for their efforts in setting out the program.

Come along and pick up a great bargain at the GMF’s upcoming fundraiser! Bid for your favourite items, enjoy a sausage sizzle and try your luck with the day’s raffle!! Mr Joseph Ireland from Licorice Property Sales has generously offered his time to auction the goods off. Looking to donate items?? If you can spare anything or want to get rid of anything please contact Barbara Gould at the Golden Bite Cafe. Should people need assistance with lifting or free transport of donated goods in the local area, please ph 0429055165 or 4938 1205. Please note that the proceeds are to help fund the proposed 2014 Rodeo. Please get behind this event as NO FUNDS MEANS NO RODEO.

I was shopping in the Deli section the other day and was looking at some of the different continental small goods. I picked up a Rookwurst - which is a classic Dutch style smoked sausage and some gent said ‘how would you use that mate?”… so I told a few ideas on how I use Rookwurst (pronounced “Rock-Vorst”). In Holland, Rookwurst is a mildly spiced smoked sausage used in casseroles, soups and stews. You can use it in place of Chorizo sausage or German Knackwurst or other European smoked sausages. We even use it on pizzas. So Bill, I hope you read this and give it a go; you be surprised - it tastes awesome. Hope you like this as much as we do, maybe not a traditional Dutch meal but I’m sure any Dutchman would love to tuck into this with some crusty bread and a glass of nice red wine. In the photo I’ve used it as part of a breakfast, but you can use as a main meal.

Shopping list: • 1 Rookwurst 375g is classic Dutch style sausage • 4 cloves of garlic • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika • 2 tablespoons parsley flakes • Pinch salt • Good dash of Tabasco sauce (optional) • ½ teaspoon black pepper • Olive oil - tablespoon • 4 large tomatoes diced (equivalent to 3 cups) • 1 red capsicum • 1 cup chicken stock

Welfare Bowls Club: New times for Spring: Sunday mornings- names in by 9am for 9.30 Tuesdays- names in by 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Friday nights- Barefoot Bowls - names by 6pm, for 6:30pm start. For further information, like us on Facebook, Mt. Morgan Welfare Bowls Club, or phone the club: 4938 1131. We are situated at 28 Thompson Avenue. Indoor Bowls Club: Saturdays at the Uniting Church Hall East Street at 2pm. $2, includes light refreshments. For more information phone the Secretary, Babs Belfield on 4938 1028. ----------------------------------------------------------------Do you have a sporting event that you’d like to see included in an upcoming issue of the Argus?? Contact Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc: Phone: 4938 2333 / Email: mmpad@bigpond.com Or pop in and see us at our office: 61 Morgan Street.

Method: Firstly, slice the Rookwurst into slices about 1 cm thick – then cut those slices in half crosswise. Fry the Rookwurst in olive oil. Once Rookwurst is browned, add in diced onions, cook until onions are soft. Add garlic and sweet paprika, salt, pepper, parsley flakes and cook for about 5 minutes. Now add tomatoes and capsicum. Stir through tomato and capsicum cook for a few minutes and add chicken stock. Bring to the boil; once boiling simmer for about 10 minutes until capsicum is soft. If you like you can thicken the gravy of this with corn flour and water paste. But the runny gravy is really nice to dip crusty bread into.

This issue’s Visitor View has kindly been sent in by Sapphire resident, Toni Boxall, following a recent trip to Mount Morgan.

A poem by Frank Clark Step on board the “Dora the Explorer” at the bus stop Heading for the high country on our way to Kroombit Tops Past the burnt hillside where there is no green Then we saw the irrigated lucerne With different shades of green In an open paddock where they made round bales of hay There old man emu quite content curled up in the hay In the bus, conversation had almost stopped Concentrating on what excitement to expect at Kroombit Tops From Jambin, to us oldies greenery meets the eyes for a few miles It changes out outlook to put on our face a smile On our way to Biloela with an Indigenous meaning of white cockatoo With my pen in hand trying to write a line or two A group of kangaroos stand in the shade and peep We are okay while the oldies on the bus are asleep By the roos’ body language, they know there is no need to bound on hop Let’s keep cool and wait a while, the bus is on its way to Kroombit Tops A lizard pokes it head up through a crack in the table Its eyes set on any mince left on the table Or anything eatable The bush birds walk up and down and round about To pounce on any goodies left lying about At lunch we sit around the bushman’s table And enjoy our lunch which consists of roast beef and vegetables We had to wait and not waste our dessert To satisfy our hunger I think it is right to say, our outlook overall - the bus trip turned out bonza

A big thanks to Toni for sharing these details with us. Hi, I was talking to a friend at the Sapphire markets about my recent visit to Mount Morgan. Jenny lives in Mount Morgan and I was interested to see the place. Wow is how I would describe it. A very vibrant town. Another reason I was interested, is that in the near future we are looking at moving to Mt Morgan. I parked in the main street and wandered along, looking at the shops, imagining living here full time. I looked in the real estate window and was very impressed at the quality of homes on offer along with the price of homes. I also liked the historic side of Mt Morgan and the buildings from a bygone era. The people I met during my visit were friendly and very helpful. What I found was that there is something for everyone at Mt Morgan. Mt Morgan, you should be very proud of yourselves and your town. Kind regards Toni Boxall
