A small crowd gathered at ANZAC Park to pay tribute to the men of the Australian Light Horse Regiments who were responsible for capturing Beersheba on 31 October 1917. REMEMBERING OUR HEROES
by the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company until it went into voluntary liquidation. When Mount Morgan Limited started operating the mine, Charlie went to work for the new company and was there until a few weeks before his death in 1951. From 1933 until 1950 he was an active member of the Mount Morgan sub-branch of the RSSAILA. He was treasurer from 1935-1941 and then became the secretary in 1941 and held office until 1948 when owing to ill health, he was compelled to resign. During World War War Two he served with the local committee associated with War work and was honorary secretary of the Mount Morgan Soldiers’ Memorial and Recreation Rooms. he was also secretary of the Mount Morgan Patriotic Society and the Welcome Home Committee. He represented the sub-branch on patriotic bodies such as the Red Cross Society, the Comforts Fund and the Soldiers’ Welfare Fund.
Photo Courtesy Mount Morgan Historical Museum As we approach Christmas and the New Year, Australians will commemorate and celebrate various events. These include Halloween, the Melbourne Cup and of course, Remembrance Day. On 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing an end to the First World War. Twelve months later on 11 November 1919, the first Armistice Day commemoration service was held - not to glorify war but as an acknowledgement of the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country.
He acted as local representative on the Repatriation Department, was honorary recruiting officer from 1942 until the end of World War Two, and was a foundation member of the Volunteer Defence Corps. He represented Mount Morgan as a Delegate at the district conference. While his service and post-service contributions have left a valuable impression, his diary compiled upon his return and completed only a few weeks before he died is perhaps one of the greatest legacies of all. While serving, Charlie studiously kept notes throughout his service and either sent these notes home for safekeeping or kept them in his shoes. The diary is about 1000 pages in length and is a poignant and realistic account of the days spent serving his country. History books can only guess at the sacrifice these men made, but it is the real-life accounts that serve to capture the emotion and suffering.
One such person was John Charles Boyes - “JC” or “Charlie” (pictured) as he was known - a Mount Morgan son born in 1892 and who joined the 12th Field Ambulance - AIF in 1915. Charlie served in France where names like Flanders and Pozieres became places of great tragedy and trauma to Charlie. When he was discharged Charlie joined the Longreach sub-branch of the Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA) where he remained until his departure in 1926. Charlie was a compositor by trade and the last office he worked in was in Longreach. Giving up printing he moved to Yeppoon and started a business. He later returned to his home town and was employed Page 6

LIBRARY NEWS COMICS, COMICS AND MORE COMICS! Readers of a certain age may remember the thrill of discovering a stash of comics tucked away in a cardboard box under a bed at a friend or relative’s house. Flipping through a well-loved comic issue of Archie & Friends, Lucky Luke, Donald Duck, Superman or The Phantom was a rite of passage for many who discovered these hidden collections. Fast forward a few years and that same thrill of discovery is still available for lovers of comics and graphic novels, albeit in a different format. The Mount Morgan Library has a small collection of graphic novels for children, teens and adults in book format, but the addition of COMICS PLUS to the online collection has literally opened the floodgates, providing 24/7 access to thousands of comics, graphic novels, manga titles and more … all you need is a library card! Comics Plus offers two options when you log on – one collection specially curated for children and
early teens, with another focusing on more adult content. The Comics Plus suite further refines selections into popular content, new releases, adventure, humour, biography and heaps more … there’s even tips and techniques for creating your own comics. Pop into your local library to find out more about Comics Plus – staff are happy to show you how to access this content on your phone, tablet or computer. The Rockhampton Southside Library now has a dedicated Adult Graphic Novel section in our relaxed Library Lounge with new books on display. Charge up your phone and sit and read or browse in air-conditioned comfort – we would love to see you! The Mount Morgan Library is located at 31 Morgan Street and open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00am-1:00pm; 2:00pm – 5:00pm; and the following Saturdays from 9:00am12noon – 11 Nov, 25 Nov, 9 Dec.
MOUNT MORGAN STATE HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE There have been some busy times at Mount Morgan High School, starting with their dry land carnival (due to the pool closure) on 16 September 2023. There was a variety of activities and novelty events run by the School Captains and Senior Leaders - Chantelle Berry, Zac Thompson, Mysty Lemire, Ailsa Williams, Noah Kielly, Zayveon Leisha, Chloe Best, Raphu Herbohn, and Kaitlyn Emery. Three-Legged-Races, Wheelbarrow Races and Sack Races with Edor was one rotation. Mr Leonard showed the seniors up by taking out the Sack Races with the tactical mad head swing. Keillan Doyle and Ryker Broome displayed great teamwork in the Wheelbarrow Race, however were chased down by Marcus Toby and Xaviah O’Brien at the finish line. Another rotation was tug-o-war. old school ball Page 12
games and soccer. Students discovered that their tunnel ball skills were bad to the point that some team mates doubled over in pain as the ball was not rolled along the ground and instead gained air. The tug-o-war was a lot of fun where some students learnt that you need an anchor person to win. Mikhaila Grange faced an uphill battle being the only year 9 Female Gordon student to attend, however sportsmanship was shown by Kendall to join forces to compete against Paterson. Students had to challenge themselves with Egg and Spoon Races, Relays, Target Throwing and Rob the Nest activities. Students discovered that their target throwing was not very accurate but some were quite fast with good balance. This saw many different

tactics used as slow and steady sometimes wins the race.
A massive thank you to everyone that helped to get them completed, especially Miss Noble, who put in a lot of her own time over the holidays.
The final rotation was Wheelchair Basketball which was a big hit amongst the students and staff. Kendall took out the Wheelchair Basketball in all age groups! A huge thank you goes out to Ben Lodewikus who made this great unique opportunity possible for students as he organised all the equipment and ran the event on the day. Overall third place went to Gordon on 628 points, second place went to Kendall on 692 and the winners were Paterson on 853 points (Winning team below)
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK Mount Morgan State High School embraced Mental Health Week (7-15 October) with a daily walk, talk and eat healthy activity. The aim was for students and staff to be active and talking. “Speak cards” were provided to encourage healthy conversation. The Queensland Guidance Counselling Association (QGCA) celebrating 75 years of Guidance provided a Grant of $150 towards this activity. The funding was used towards healthy snacks (fruit, salads) and prizes to students who complete each daily walk. The School is hoping to encourage a greater level of participation from students and staff eating healthy, exercising and talking to build healthy mental health tools. The School’s Hospitality students and staff with Ms Philp’s made amazing salads on Wednesday. On Thursday, there was a sausage sizzle lunch organised by Nurse Trish. Students were able to snack on apples and had some great chats answering speak cards like “Do you have a favourite family story?” and “What was one of your best holidays?”.
BACK BOARDS On Friday, 13 October the school held its opening ceremony for the new Basketball Backboards. Thank you, to Aunty Daisy for attending and representing the Elders of our community. As part of School’s NAIDOC celebrations this year students were invited to draw a design for the Basketball Backboards. There were a lot of great designs, so it was decided to incorporate them all. It took a lot of hours and a lot of hard work. The designs had to be drawn onto the boards, painted 1 - 15 November October 2023

Funding for arts projects now open The next round of Rockhampton’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is now open. RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Rockhampton Regional Council, supporting professional artists and arts practice in regional areas. Broadly, RADF covers projects that enhance the arts on a local level by providing financial assistance to support artists’ professional development or increase artists’ employment opportunities. Funding comes under two categories – Development Grant and Project Grant Development grants for artists and arts workers cover: professional career development, skills development workshops, concept development and creative development of new work. Assistance is available for up to 65 percent of the total costs to a maximum of $5000. Project

Assistance is available for up to 80 percent of the total cost to a maximum of $10,000 Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson encouraged local individuals and groups to see if RADF could help them. “RADF can support all kinds of projects, within these two broad categories,” he said. “RADF welcomes applications from all genres whether it is visual arts, crafts, performing arts, collections and museums, new media and more,” he said. “I recommend that anyone considering an arts project have a look at the case studies of recent RADF funding rounds to see the kinds of applications that have been successful. These are available on the RADF page of
Council’s web site” he said. Council’s website (www. rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/ radf) has information on previously successful RADF applications which current applicants might find helpful. Quick response grants are available for any project or activity that requires funding outside the grant rounds with assistance available for up to 65 percent of the total costs to a maximum of $1000. Applications are now being accepted for projects commencing on or after Friday 15 December 2023. Applications close 5pm Tuesday 14 November 2023. “GREASE” IS THE WORD Do you fancy yourself as a Pink Lady or one of the T Birds? Then dust off your bobby socks and leather jackets, this is your chance to be part of Rockhampton Regional Council’s 2024 musical GREASE.
Auditions will be held on Thursday, 9 November to Tuesday, 14 November with lead and ensemble roles available. GREASE is one of the world’s most loved musicals, full of unforgettable hits including Summer Nights, Greased Lightnin’, You’re the One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted to You and more. After a whirlwind summer romance, leather-clad greaser Danny and sweet-and-wholesome Sandy are unexpectedly reunited when Sandy arrives at Rydell High. But can they survive the trials and tribulations of teenage life and find true love once more? Page 14
The production’s Creative Team comprises Director Amanda Hock, Musical Director Stephanie Quinlan, Vocal Director Jacinta Delalande, Choreographer Lita Hegvold, Repetiteur Daena Walton and Costume Coordinator Sue Earle. Cr Drew Wickerson, spokesperson for Rockhampton Regional Council’s Communities and Heritage portfolio encouraged people to audition for the show. “Whether you fancy yourself as Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenicke or any of the other named roles, or whether you just want to be a member of the ensemble, we would love to have you audition,” he said.
“Council musicals are a great opportunity for local performers to display their talent and audiences respond really favourably to these musicals. Performers also learn a lot from working in a professional MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS
environment.
“I would suggest that anyone who has perhaps been thinking about auditioning in the past and hasn’t done so, to give it a try. There’s always a great feeling of community within the company and GREASE is a really fun musical. It’s a great event to be involved in,” he said. Auditionees are required to perform a song from the show, from a pre-selected list. To book an audition place, and for more information, visit www. seeitlive.com.au/audition. Audition bookings will close on Tuesday 7 November at 5pm. GREASE opens on Friday 15 March and will run for a limited season. Tickets will go on sale shortly.
