In a past edition, some history was published on what was known as the Caretaker’s Cottage in Boyd Park. At a recent public meeting about this site, further historical details were explained and this building will also now be referred to as the Laboratory/Assay Office, given its earlier use. This issue we provide detail of this early usage. The building was constructed as a three room brick building by the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. before 1892 using bricks manufactured on site. The three rooms were a balance room, a fusion furnace with still and a laboratory room. The building is one of two of the oldest structures of that Company, the other being Nash’s Residence on the Mine lease also in a very poor state. This original building of the Assay Office was constructed some distance from the Mine so as to avoid the presence of dust and fumes. The principal purpose of the Laboratory was to collect different samples of rocks from the mine area and research/assay their contents to see if suitable for further treatment and at the same time conduct assaying and monitor current process. History tells us that about 1907 another Assay office was built closer to the Mine site and the original building began to be used as a Staff Residence and classified as No 10 Residence. The first staff member to be housed in the building was Mr Vincent Joseph Underhill an assayer and father of the well-known resident for many years Mr Sam Underhill, now deceased. The house received minor alterations When voluntary liquidation came in 1927 the house was sold to a Mr Toppenberg but the ground and swimming pool remained part of the original freehold of the Mine. Then in 1934 when the Welfare Works Scheme came into operation the house was re-purchased by Mount Morgan Limited and the dwelling became the Caretaker’s Cottage for the sporting facilities of the swimming pool, bowling green and tennis courts. The first caretaker was Mr Dave Millers. Further alterations were done to the building and so the original design was changed. Like many of the buildings in the local area, this building has important heritage significance and can be seen as an asset for tourism. It is hoped that with public assistance and positive action this building, the original three rooms can be reinstated and future use can be discussed and instigated. Don’t forget that the local organisation, MMPAD, is establishing a subcommittee to continue their focus on the conservation of heritage icons. If you would like further information, contact Camille and express your interest. Let us try to preserve some of our gold mining history. Our major aim is still “Think Clean- Be Tidy” use the bins and feel a glow of pride when you show your visiting relatives or friends our clean town. Little effort – Great reward.

The last time students and staff of Mount Morgan Sacred Heart School saw the contents of its time capsule, the year was 1988: The former Mount Morgan Catholic Church was set to mark its centenary, and the Sacred Heart School was doing something special to celebrate. Students and staff passed on hand written items, and a collection of keepsakes were sealed and buried– marked to only be reopened in 2013. Last Saturday, a number of ex students and staff took a trip down memory lane when they joined together to officially unearth the time capsule that had been tucked away in the school grounds for 25 years. For many, the event was history repeating – as former Principal of Sacred Heart, Mr Brendan Stockall addressed the small crowd of early students and staff and welcomed all to the momentous occasion. The official unearthing commenced shortly after; carried out by a number of former students who took turns on the shovel in search of the capsule. It wasn’t long before the capsule was discovered, and out in the open once more. The group then headed to the Mount Morgan Dam to conduct the official opening and unveil the capsule’s contents. The materials inside were in excellent condition and included self student profiles, photographs, letters written by various students and members of staff, a copy of the school’s information booklet, and information on the Parish’s centenary.
“I was present when they buried it. I don’t remember it very well, but do remember that I wasn’t allowed the day off - my mum was the school secretary,” he laughed. Along with unearthing the capsule, Danny said a personal highlight was also seeing former classmates. “Seeing people you haven’t seen in such a long time has been amazing,” he said. “I found myself going up to a few and introducing myself because I really had no clue who they were.” Echoing Danny’s words, former Principal, Brendan Stockall said: “My memory of these people is when they were 10 and 11 years old - so yes, everyone looks a lot different,” he laughed. Pictured above: Former students and staff of Sacred Heart School: (Left to right): Megan Bougoure, Patrick Cahill, Helen Bristrow, Lahra Matheson, Brendan Stockall. Pat Robson, Cindy O’Neil, Deanna Anderson (with Causey-Leon), Louise Chapman, Jen Lodewikus, Tammy Alden, and Danny Robson and Terry Edwards (front row). Pictured below: Former Sacred Heart Principal, Brendan Stockall and former Sacred Heart teacher, Cindy O’Neil read aloud Cindy’s message written for the capsule in 1988.
Many present were able to read letters written by their early selves – reliving their favourite bands, desired future occupation and even remising the class sweethearts and couples during the time of their writing. The day was arranged by former students Danny Robson and Jen Lodewikus. “I had caught up with a few former classmates on Facebook, and Jen and I decided that we would take on the reopening of the capsule,” Danny said on its early establishment. “It was a little tricky with the school being closed since ’97, but we managed to get in contact with quite a few people.” Discussing the day’s fruition, Danny said he was very happy with how it all came together. “It’s just been a great day – and great finding the capsule,” he said.

Their hope was to see $5,000 raised for the Leukaemia Foundation, but thanks to hard work and the support of the local community, Brian and Carol Stock’s fundraising efforts have gone above and beyond. Through a culmination of fundraisers and donations, the local couple have raised a whopping $6,000. The sum was achieved earlier this month; with more than $2,200 raised through raffles, over $3,600 through a massive cent sale and a number of local donations. Discussing the sum, Brian and Carol said they were ecstatic with the result. “We’d really like to thank everyone for their support,” Carol said. “We are thrilled with what we have been able to achieve and sincerely thank all who have supported in anyway – whether by attending the cent sale, making donations, or helping us promote our activities.” The pair will soon be making their way to the Leukaemia Foundation in Townsville to personally deliver the donation. The upcoming trip proves a much different purpose than the one the couple made in October 2010. Brian underwent seven months of intensive treatment at the Foundation after he was diagnosed with myeloma (also known as multiple myeloma) following a back x-ray earlier that year.
Although now in full remission, the couple say the difficult time isn’t something they want to forget just yet. “It was a difficult time for Brian and all of our family and friends, but we are really thankful for the support the foundation gave to us,” Carol said. “The staff were wonderful, and we were given somewhere to stay for the entirety of Brian’s treatment. It all helped during a tough time and that’s why we are so eager to give something back.” The $6,000 sum will go toward the accommodation section for the foundation – which houses patients receiving leukaemia treatment free of charge. “Being on the receiving end of this, Brian and I consider the accommodation area really important,” Carol said. “All cancer support and research is, but this is something we really wanted to support.” “Knowing you have somewhere to stay and that you don’t have to worry about how you are going to cover the costs is one less thing to worry about during that difficult time, and that was something that meant a lot to us.”

Mount Morgan has been given the opportunity to reform what used to be the Emergency Services Cadet Program under the banner of the PCYC. To gauge if there is enough interest from the youth of the community to restart the cadet program here in Mount Morgan, a meeting open to parents and youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years, will be held at SES Headquarters (31 Pattison St) on Thursday 24th of October at 3.30pm. If you are truly interested in completing training relevant to the Emergency Services and would be prepared to commit to attending training each fortnight, then I would encourage you to attend this meeting. Unfortunately, if there is not enough interest shown, the program will not restart. Article supplied.

Local residents may have spotted newly introduced signs at the Mount Morgan Dam of late, detailing a recent crocodile sighting. An inspection of the Mount Morgan Dam was carried out by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection last Thursday, in response to two recently reported crocodile sightings. As a result, crocodile sighting signs have been put in place by EHP, and are expected to remain until the end of this week.
Further details of the inspection are anticipated to be provided in the near future, with an update provided in the next issue of the Argus.
EHP have advised that crocodile sightings can be reported on 1300 130 372 and that the department investigates all crocodile reports it receives.

Mount Morgan State High School provides a Seriously entertaining production
On the 10th and the 11th of October, a group of the talented students from Mount Morgan State High School performed a number of short plays as part of the production “Seriously Short”. Plays full of murder, mystery, heart touching moments, and pure laughter, were extensively enjoyed by the Mount Morgan community. As the cast and crew were very anxious to begin the night. The atmosphere was buzzing when the doors of the community’s School of Arts building were open. The night began with a hall full of laughter as Ryhiannon Craven, Cleavyn Cowl, Corrina Gassler, John Turner and Brodie Tremaine took stage in “Five Kings” - a play of 5 hardened pub goers, hoping to win big. Unfortunately, not all of them are convinced they are that lucky. All stars in this play had as much fun as did the audience watching. “10 Million Pieces of my Heart” starring Lydia Howe and Jayden Cowl, was the second act to take stage. This was a heart breaking performance about two people who had broken up. Trying to understand why, ‘Suitcase’ and ‘Eva’ reread all of their old text messages in order to achieve this. Next, mystery had the audience in suspense when Matthew Lodewikus, Chynna Williams, John Turner, Shanalee Mansell and Lisa Furguson performed “Traveller in the Dark”. This captivating story showed a young woman in her final moments before being brutally murdered. Detectives try to unveil the real killer, but can they find him before the traveller in the dark strikes again?
Written by Mount Morgan State High School’s very own Philip Bird (graduate of 2011), “Awkward” enlightened the audience as to what it’s like being housemates with, what can only be described as, a slob and an inconvenience. As the play progresses we find that all hope is not lost when you can simply win it big. A big congratulations was awarded to all cast, and special thanks to all the backstage crew. ‘Seriously Short’, directed by Anna Kahler, Carmel Fox and Linda Bunning, was a massive success with approximately 120 people turning up to see the talent of the local high school. Without the support and encouragement of the community, events such as ‘Seriously Short’ would not be able to occur, and it is much appreciated. With end of night comments from cast and crew such as “That was awesome, I can’t wait to do it again!”Ryhiannon Craven and “Thank you for letting me be involved in this year’s production, it was so exciting!” – Lydia Howe, it is certain more great productions will come from the talent of Mount Morgan State High School. Article by Lydia Howe and Constance Whittingham. Pictured: Matthew Lodewikus and Chynna Williams during their performance in “Traveller in the Dark”.
Forth to perform was “First Fireworks”, a moving and emotional play starring Moniqua Spanner and Constance Whittingham. A mother on her death bed wishes to spend her dying moments with her only daughter watching their traditional and treasured new year’s fireworks. Ending the night with an uproar of laughter, Brodie Tremaine and Ryhiannon Craven stared in “Awkward”.

A new program at Bidgerdii Health Service is aiming to provide local students with a range of stress and conflict management skills. “In Control” was officially launched at Bidgerdii Health Service in Mount Morgan last Wednesday and will now run at the local clinic for the next eight weeks. The program is a collaboration of Bidgerdii, Reconnect, Mount Morgan High and the local community, and will see the participation of a number of students from years 8 to 12. “Stress and conflict can be difficult to deal with,” Bidgerdii Community Relation Manager, Poyana Pensio said at the program’s official launch. “Through this program we are looking to engage students with a range of positive activities with this focus.” The program focuses on stress, conflict management and communication skills, and delves into the causes of conflict and ways to counteract difficult situations. Along with mentoring and discussion, the program includes a number of interactive and traditional cultural activities – something local students, Shianne Matheson and Chelsea Tull say they are looking forward to.
Happy 70th Birthday Marlene Sealey, for the 21st of October! Love from Fred, Brad, Inyang, Kids, & Kiddlets, Kev & Mandy, Bill, Karen & your special little grandson Harry.

On Friday, the 11th of October, the Mount Morgan Welfare Bowling Club celebrated its 95th birthday. Around 30 people attended the local celebrations, which consisted of a game of barefoot bowls, lots of nibblies and a birthday cake – cut by long term members, Val Staines and life member of our club, Col Turner. Just about everyone attending also went home with a prize, thanks to the evening’s lucky draw. Big thanks go to Joan Cavanagh for organising such a great night. We look forward to our Centenary in 2018. President’s Day: Our birthday celebrations were followed by our President’s Day on the Saturday afternoon. This event welcomed 56 bowlers to the clubhouse, including local bowling enthusiast and visitors from around Region. The day was won by the team from Yeppoon, skipped by Ken Tanzer. Runners up were Victoria Park team, skipped by former local resident, Fred Passmore. The Sportsmen Prize went to local team; Chris Izzard, Abbie Rowe, John Sleaford and Keith Nunn. Along with the game, the day also included a lovely lunch, which saw the club christen its new dining room furniture. This furniture was recently purchased with a $10,000 grant received through the State Government Gambling and Licensing fund. A special thanks to Jen Klower for helping us in obtaining it. Hi Argus readers, We hope you are enjoying your latest Argus issue. As always, there has been a stack of positive things happening in the Mount, and we sincerely thank all who have been passing on event invitations, article and story ideas. Please keep them coming :) While we are on the subject of recent events, we would like to say very big congratulations to the students of Mount Morgan State High School and all who were involved in the “Seriously Short” school production last fortnight. All did a great job and we have been receiving some really great comments from the community about the evenings. Well done! As we head into the last few months of the year, there are a number of other very exciting things to look forward to – with the State Primary and State High School’s Award ceremonies, the 2013 Senior Formal, local fundraisers and also the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival. Please don’t forget to mark our two Christmas Tree Festival fundraising events in your diaries. Here are the details:
Christmas Tree Festival fundraisers!
In aim of raising the required funds to host the 2013 Christmas Tree Festival, MMPAD will be hosting two fundraising events next month. First up, we will be holding a Trivia Night on the 9th of November (7pm, School of Arts Hall). Now we know that many of you are probably thinking “I won’t know any answers”… but trust us, you will be surprised at what you may know! Round up your friends for our 8 round challenge – it’s sure to be a great night!!! To register your team, please contact our office by November 4. Our next fundraiser is a Christmas Cent Sale, and will be held on the 23rd of November (2pm, School of Arts). Come along and try your luck at some fantastic prizes. It’s a great way to help stock your pantry and Chrissie stocking this festive season.
New curtain for the School of Arts is on its way:
Speaking on events at the School of Arts, we are very excited to announce that the new curtain for the hall is not far off! The purchase order has been finalised, and all going well, we should have the curtain by mid next month! This will be a very exciting addition to the Hall and we cannot wait to see it in place. We look forward to bringing you further details on this progression in the next Argus, and update you on the plans to officially celebrate this exciting addition.
Local historic icons:
Along with our upcoming events, another project we currently have underway is progressing work on our local icon conservation. The last issue of the Argus provided an update on the consultation regarding the former assay office. Included in the article were the details that our organisation is looking to establish a subcommittee specifically focusing on the conservation of the local area’s heritage and important sites.
The article invited all interested individuals to become involved, and we have since welcomed five new members to our organisation. A very warm welcome. The forming of this subcommittee follows past meetings held between MMPAD, Council, members of the Queensland Government and other local asset owners; in aim of forming a stronger conservation plan established for the Mount Morgan area. Our first subcommittee meeting is scheduled for the first week of November. Our Project Officer and members of our Executive will also be attending a meeting with Council this week to follow on from the former heritage icons meetings in 2012. This is anticipated to see these details updated in time for our first subcommittee meeting. If you would like further details, or would like to become a member of this committee, please do not hesitate to contact our Project Officer, Camille. Find us on Facebook! You can also stay up to date with our activities as well as other community happenings and events, by liking and following us on Facebook (Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Incorporated). Along with announcements we also upload images taken at community events regularly – so you can see all of the photos from the Argus, plus more in full colour.
The countdown is on for the 2013 Mount Morgan Christmas Tree Festival – with under two months until the big event! Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc., in conjunction with the Saint Mary’s Anglican Church would like to warmly welcome all to come along and enjoy the event’s 11th year in the community. This year’s festival will be held on December 13th and 14th, 6:00pm – 8:30pm at the Mount Morgan School of Arts Hall. In the lead up to the event, be sure to get cracking on your tree entries… Local organisations, businesses, sporting clubs, groups and community members are all invited to submit a decorated tree to be included in this year’s display. Please note that entries for the tree display can be submitted on the 11th and 12th of December, between 10am and 5pm. We are also calling for stall holders to again be a part of this year’s event… If you are interested in a site for stalls or selling raffle tickets, please contact the MMPAD office. If you would like any further details on this year’s event, please do not hesitate to contact the MMPAD office on 4938 2333 or email: mmpad@bigpond.com

My family love homemade mayo. It’s cheap, fresh, yummo, plus it’s quick - in three to five minutes, you’ve got homemade mayo.
Shopping list:
• 2 egg yolks, at room temperature • 2-3 tsp fresh lemon juice / or vinegar (white or wine) • 1 teaspoon mustard power or 1 ½ tablespoons hot English mustard • Pinch of salt • 250ml olive oil {virgin} • Freshly ground white pepper
Method:
Place the egg yolks, 1 1/2 tsp of the lemon juice or vinegar, mustard and a pinch of salt in the bowl of a food processor or blender and process until the mixture just begins to thicken. Pour the olive and vegetable oil into a measuring jug. With the motor running full speed, slowly add oil to egg-yolk mixture in a fine thin steady stream, stopping occasionally to scrape down the side of the food processor with a spoon or spatula, until the mixture is thick, creamy and pale. You need to add the oil slowly, but if added too slowly, the mixture could thicken too quickly - so if this happens, add hot water (2 tsp will be enough), to thin down mayonnaise before adding the remaining oil. Taste the mayonnaise and adjust the seasoning with extra lemon juice or vinegar, salt and pepper if desired. Put into a small airtight container. Next, place a piece of plastic kitchen wrap directly on the surface of the mayonnaise, to stop a skin forming and cover with a lid. Place in the fridge and use as required.

By adding things to this basic mayo, we make homemade sauces: • Aioli - which is made as an olive oil mayo with garlic added • Rouille – which is aioli with added red pepper or paprika • Ranch dressing- made of buttermilk or sour cream, mayonnaise, and minced green onion. Or also make a nice Blue ranch dressing with blue cheese • Tartar sauce is my basic mayo, spiced with pickled cucumbers and onion, capers, olives, and crushed hardboiled eggs My daughter loves Aioli with smokey BBQ sauce and Tabasco sauce at ratio of 6 tablespoons mayo 3 table spoons smokey BBQ sauce and ½ teaspoon Tabasco sauce. We sometimes also use this sauce as a pizza base sauce, with seafood. So please try to make your own mayonnaise at home - it’s easy and fun to show people how clever you are. Feel free to test with different oils, except for car oil of course… You can also try different vinegars which also change the final outcome of the mayo- like tarragon vinegar or chilli vinegar or even balsamic vinegar to make a brown mayo with an awesome flavour.
